I've been taking classes for almost two years. I'm so frustrated because even with all my efforts and practice, I don't sound good. I thought it was my fault, that it's impossible for me to learn. Thank you for this. now I know what I have to do to improve ❤️❤️❤️ u are amazing

I can totally relate to the frustration that you are describing, as I have taken voice lessons, but I still have difficulty singing some songs that have large intervals and high notes.

large intervals are some of the harder parts of singing, so in my learning journey I always left that to last! focus first on being able to sing comfortably in your low range, your high range, and then your mix and after that, practice the intervals really slowly, over and over, and it will become a breeze! :)

I watched so many of your videos today i think this is the one where you say think of going up when you are going down. I get that! But why?? I would love to know more about why that makes sense. Maybe support or something? Its like a part of my voice as to go lower to go higher. This really helped!

Oh yes! I think it was in this one (or did I mention it here too? haha) ruclips.net/video/II5PjEdvqes/видео.htmlsi=ikFsXir81DRsk8gA
This was something many vocal coaches have taught me over the years, and I think it's mostly just a reverse psychology mental trick! The kind of idea where if we're preparing for an exam or a big sports championship and we tell ourselves "this is going to be really difficult and important!" we're setting ourselves up to fear failure and almost expect defeat (or cause it in a self-sabotage way). With singing, we tend to think "oh no this is so low/high that I definitely can't hit it" so with that thought, we tense up as an attempt to "help" or really brace ourselves, which then *causes* the inability to hit that note. Telling yourself a really high note is actually a low note makes you go "oh, that's not a big deal, I can do that" and you don't tense up, therefore you don't cause yourself to miss it. Tension is actually the cause of breaks and things like that haha.
One of my voice coaches also used to do warm ups with me but did the scale out of order, and didn't let me look at the piano. It was his way of trying to trick my brain, so that I didn't know if the note I was hitting was super high or super low, and it really did work!
Our brains just tend to screw us up a lot
      😂

We had the same issue and your videos have really helped me find my chest and mix. Also it definitely was very discouraging not being able to sing louder and project using a different placement. I needed this video ❤

This is good to hear. I do the exercises correctly and I can hit the correct notes, but the sound itself is still bad so now I’m at a loss cause technically on paper I’m doing it but it doesn’t sound pretty yet 😅

By exercises, do you mean the Nay and Nyah exercises I mention on my channel, or other types of exercises?
If it’s the Nay (mixed voice exercise) or Nyah (chest voice exercise) that I use, those don’t sound great off the bat, so if that’s the case, I suggest just practicing them until it becomes even easier to find that placement even if the sound still sounds “cringey” and then start to switch to vowels.
Also keep in mind that nothing should hurt or require any kind of tension or strain, so if that’s what you’re experiencing, you may be practicing the exercises in the wrong placement. Often singers can hit the right notes, but be doing them in the wrong placements so they won’t sound (or feel) good.
I do offer online lessons (even just one-time ones!) if you were interested in having someone hear you to better understand what you’re struggling with. But first things first, I’d say make sure you’re doing the exercises correctly and without strain. And again - if you mean that they sound bad while doing those Nay and Nyah exercises, they should definitely have a “cringe” element to it as you’re practicing. If that’s the case, then keep practicing and when you feel ready, start turning that exercise into a vowel such as “Ah”. That will really round out the sound and make it pretty 😄 It took me a few months to get to that place though, so definitely be patient with yourself! :) Let me know if that helps at all!

@@katecosettevocals hi,I mean I do ALLLLL the exercises, and when I do scales I am hitting the correct notes..I mean when I then sing, even if I’m hitting the right notes the singing itself doesn’t sound good. No I don’t mean I sound bad during exercises, I mean when I put it to practice and actually sing, maybe a tone problem?
And yeah I did the vowels, but the vowels didn’t sound pretty:( I do have a vocal coach but I think I’ll still try some sessions with you asap:) Xx

For the "even if I'm hitting the right notes the singing itself doesn't sound good" - I used to relate to that sooooo much! So frustrating, but also no worries

There is an old story about a man walking down a street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep, he can’t get out. A doctor passes by, and the man yells, “Hey you, can you help me out?” The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a priest comes along, and the man shouts “Father, I’m down in this hole, can you help me out?” The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a friend walks by. “Hey it’s me, can you help me out?” And the friend jumps in the hole. The man says, “Are you crazy? Now we’re both down here.” The friend says, “Yeah, but I’ve been down here before, and I know the way out.”
Kate is the friend who has been in the hole and knows the way out. And if you are looking to learn, or to improve your vocal technique, wouldn't you want to learn from someone who has taken the journey? Of course you would. Kate should be the busiest teacher on RUclips (and I say this partially against my own interest because I want Kate to always have time for me:)
If Kate wrote her method in a book it would be transformative. As Kate mentions here, her method is to teach how to sing (breathing, vowels and placement). I literally did not know any of that when I started. Now I do. And I "can sing". And so will you.
    R
