  • This video will compare real life mpg tests for two types of driving of the Mazda MX-5 ND 1.5l engine, firstly nursing it, trying to keep revs between 1k-2k rpm and then driving the mx5 ND as it should be drive, basically extending the rev range further before changing up a gear. I guess you could say what is the extra cost for a bit of fun?
So firstly driving around for a week nursing the throttle my average miledge as shown on the trip computer was exactly 50 mpg. A mixture of town and motorway driving. To get a more accurate figure if we calculate miles driven divided by the litres used from fill to fill we get a figure of 49.5mpg.
For the second test, covering a similar distance over similar roads, the trip computer showed 46.5mpg, but the more accurate calculation comes out as 47.0 mpg interestingly this time MORE generous than the trip meter. So hardly any difference between the two.
Considering the distances were almost the same the difference is cost for having fun was just over £3 a week - basically the price of a cup of coffee.

Great job, I love real world tests. Although they are highly personal and every person will be a little different, they are far more usable than merely repeating the specifications from a product brochure. Here in the US, we only have the 2.0l, wish the 1.5l was an option.

I have a 2023 2.0 litre 181bhp and that does a consistent 40mpg when driven in a sporty but not crazy manner, with a 50/50 split of motorway and town driving. I'm happy with that.

      Those are good numbers

wow 45 imperial MPG that’s 37 US while driving hard is fantastic. GR86s do 23 US combined, city would be closer to 19-20.

    I love my RF 2.0
I can get 50 mpg + traveling for 2 hours on a long motorway journey at constant speeds
during the week short journeys - shops and around town, gives mid 30's
then there are some nice winding country roads which don't necessarily demand speed but are driven best with the revs at 3500 and over throughout low giving 30's to high 20's for a short time
overall the lifetime MPG showing on the system is 42 mpg I'm more than happy with that
i think it cost me about 16p a mile in fuel - bargain

I get mid 40s around town, without nursing it. Maybe the difference is due to you've got the larger engine.

my journeys are 5 - 10 mins and back the engine is only getting warm and I certainly don't nurse it when it is

Good video! However, consider putting the engine in the decription (or title). Without it we can't know if it's the 1.5 or the 2.0.

      Good point, it's a 1.5. I'll update description now.

I always absolutely rip mine everywhere I go, and I still get 40-45mpg combined.

It's amazing how economical these little sports cars are, something to do with their light weight I'm sure.

BTW I recently did a 400 mile round trip mostly motorway and experimented doing 60 mph more than 70. Astonished to get just over 60 mph. Ok that's not why you buy a sports car, but it's crazy, better than my hybrid was getting previously.

I wonder, what would the grade of fuel (expensive vs cheaper type) make a difference in this test? especially if the car is given multiple fuel tanks in order to adjust to the tank of fuel.

In my experience, very little difference using regular and high octane. Mazda recommends higher octane and maybe it gives an edge on performance but as for mpg there's nothing in it.

Thought of a PCP finance from UK dealers, costs me just over £400 a month for brand new ND2

@@RobertKay I've thought of that sort of thing, but there's two issues:
      I'm from Australia lol
And I'm an apprentice electrician with a pay that even if I didn't get taxed and had to pay zero rent or anything, still wouldn't cover that finance :(
As I said, desperately saving. I'm on the way to getting one, it's just gonna be a little while.
