This is the kind of energy that drew me to build a Bant Birds deck with Derevi at the helm. Which, Derevi is undoubtedly strong, but really I'm just here to build a board of pseudo-vigilant fliers that can take over a game rather than a stax deck.
I understand the appeal. I have a mono-red Lu Bu, Master-at-Arms deck. There are plenty of better mono red voltron commanders out there, but Lu Bu has under 70 decks and I really enjoy that my commander has a Dynasty Warriors Theme Song.
My Astrid Peth deck is like this. A random creature from the Doctor Who precons that has absolutely no synergy with what the deck is doing at all. But I love Kylie Minogue so I made her my commander and it's tied for my favorite commander deck. Everything it does is written right out on the card. Artifact tokens, lifegain, artifact sacrifice, recursion, gets lands to hand, GETS BIGGER. The deck is Kylie and her girlfriends doing all of that and swinging in for commander damage. There's a surprising amount of new cards, especially in Universes Beyond, that feed into that exact theme. Gain life get bigger do smash.
After playing MTG for over 20 years one of the ways that I try to challenge myself in deckbuilding is to purposefully seek out lesser used commanders and see what I can do with them.
re: joey’s question at the end of “have you built around a commander that has little/no data” and the answer for me is yes, a few times. My current project, however, is to find the perfect deck to loop sadistic augermage in. Considering mono-black sidisi to find augermage more, but it is VERY MUCH a work in progress!
My version of this is Denethor, Stone Seer, which has 23 decks on EDHrec right now. At the time I was looking to try out izzet since that was a color combo I hadn't built a deck for yet, but almost everything was just spellslinger and card draw, and I had decks that did those already. But a 2 mana ETB scry 2? That could be anything! Ultimately I made it into a flicker deck which like Skoa treats the commander as an always-available (if suboptimal) target. It quickly became one of my favorites, and ended up being a lot stronger than initially expected. And having a guaranteed scry 2 on turn 2 makes the deck feel just buttery smooth!
My group just made a challenge to create a budget commander deck based off of commanders with less than 200 decks on edhrec. Its been fun finding some interesting cards that might not normally make the cut and find ways to work with them.
My choice of lower-rarity Red commander was actually from last Modern Horizons: Captain Ripley Vance. Sure, she takes a bit of setup, but that's part of the fun of it.
Right when Skoa came out I made like 6 different decks with him and all the red “snow matters” cards in red. (Avalanche, frost bite, skred, goblin Ski patrol, etc). I posted them on all the different online deck sites. I was 6 of the 10 Skoa decks on EDHRec which meant that all the top suggestions were terrible snow cards.
I built Boros landfall with Gisela blade of goldnight at the helm around urborg tomb of yawgmoth and karma. I'm running every bounce land and stuff like lotus Vale and glacial chasm to keep my white catch-up online at all times. I'll play winds of change to ramp the rest of the pod while i have an archaeomancers map on the field and other shenanigans like that. It's definitely one of my favourite builds despite how janky it is
My favorite deck to tinker around with recently is The Dalek Emperor, who is the 94th most popular rakdos commander. When I built the deck it had just under 150 decks on EDHRec. Now it's a bit over 200. It started off as the funny deck that ran some Daleks & a bunch of changelings. (Notably there are only 4 cards in Magic with creature type Dalek & 1 of them is blue. There are 3 cards that make Dalek tokens & that one of those is also blue.) However my playgroup almost always chose the sacrifice a creature mode instead of give ma Dalek mode. So overtime it's kind of transformed into this weird punisher deck where anytime a creature my opponents control dies it triggers a bunch of things. So whether or not they sac a creature to The Dalek Emperor trigger or cause some death while blocking the Dalek I made pain is being spread around.
I love you for this Joey! ❤ not nearly enough people challenge themselves when they build a deck, let alone purposefully building an unpopluar commander (at least that's how it feels around my LGS's) I built a Troyan decks when he was at 84 decks and I had a blast doing it! There are SO MANY busted simic commanders that any one of them less powerful than Kinnan or Uro just get swept under the rug, which is exactly what drew me to Troyan so much!
My favorite LOTR character is Saruman and I was so excited when I saw the art for his Esper card. Try as I might, I just couldn’t have fun with that deck. When I wasn’t trying to wrap my and the entire pods head around his rules, I was mired down in analysis paralysis looking at everyone’s graveyards over and over again. The games were just not fun. When I looked at the Grixis Saruman, his game plan was more straightforward but I have already so many Grixis decks that I felt a fourth would just be a strain on my mana base resources and frankly just boring. So I decided to build mono blue Saruman. The game plan is simple, play cantrips on everyone’s turn to interact and slow their game plans, make a huge orc army, and bring the age of men to a close one by one with a huge evasive or unblockable orc army. Optimal? No. Fun? You betcha.
I actually have a stack of cards set aside for a skoa deck, too. Roughly the same idea, but I'm actively avoiding backup plans because really what I want to do is FTK someone to death with skoa, them probably just lose
My favourite deck at the moment (Brinelin//Gilanra) was well under 400 decks built when i made it. Not exactly unknown, but definitely slept on in my opinion.
I made a Discord, Lord of Disharmony commander deck. that one was rough to come up with since there was no information about it available on EDHREC about it since its a sliver bordered card. I would love to see a video about what yall think about sliver bordered commanders and the rule zero conversations that come about when using rule zero commanders.
I saw a post on Reddit where what someone did was have a thermal printer and a program that randomly prints a nonland card at the beginning of turn. They also had a stack of tokens for stuff such as Dungeons, the monarch, attractions, Roles, and various other things. Seemed really fun but complicated to play against
Love to see it. I was convinced to try Korlash, Heir to Blackblade. It's stupid fun, and... of course, I had to slip in some really janky ways to copy him, send him to the yard, and loop Grandeur a few times for giggles... which I've managed once. Worth it.
I built my Faldorn deck very early by myself and fully leaned into the exile + extra land drops angle before I saw any data supporting that on EDHRec (the page mostly showed wolf tribal at the time and that didn't interest me, so I just kept building and refining on my own). Recently, I built Doc Aurlock from scratch as a Simic Adventures commander because the other side of the adventures is cast from exile and usually overcosted - with the Doc in play, it costs 2 less. It makes for a fun (mostly) budget brew that also included a plot sub-theme (another mechanic that I really like).
My slow burn shenanigans deck is Prime Speaker Zegana: hand-size-matters creatures & blue blink effects. It was my first EDH deck & still close to my heart. Super diverse wincons, from decking myself to insane overruns, Simic Ascendancy upkeep, etc. Sitting at 600 decks on EDHRec.
I have a mono blue deck built around drawing cards and smashing face, which initially had Syr Elenora at the helm, but I’ve since swapped it out for Iymrith, but even then they’re incredibly unpopular commanders, but the fun of choosing such oddball commanders is that you’re opponents won’t always be able to guess what the decks gonna do, or how strong it can actually be
This has been my jam, since forever, I love building the weird commanders nobody has heard of or cares about or building the well known ones in weird ways. Some of my more obscure decks are Hakim loreweaver aura voltron, Shauku end bringer creature wipe, golgari spirit tribal with Iname as one, the list goes on. XD
For a much lower power build one could build around the second ability. Use Spy Kit to give the commander the names of all non-legendary creatures and discard nonlegend creatures for a repeatable removal engine. This would require/benefit from: * a lot of mountains and non-legend creatures * a few ways to get Spy Kit, Sword of the Animist and Crucible of Worlds to grave and back to play * Containment Construct, Currency Converter, and Feldon of the Third Path to add value when you discard.
The MH3 deck I considered building initially is Shilgengar because I think it's funny to have an angel tribal deck led by a demon. When I actually took a deeper look at the cards I found Ral, Monsoon Mage and think it could make for a pretty fun and thematic coin flip deck.
One of the most popular decks I've ever made is a Shessra, Death's Whisper deck I put together, in part from frustration of people just using her as a deathtouch commander - the must block ability is cool, but it's only on ETB! She gets the death draw every turn!! And so instead I turned her into an edict focused deck, a deck which could use stuff like scions and soul shatters to draw cards with her ability, without being entirely reliant on the commander to function! She's a nice boost, but she's far from the most impactful thing in the world. Sure, one could run Meren, and I have a Meren deck, but there's something delightful about the lower power that Shessra brings - of just, each turn, drawing an extra card, and having some stuff die.
Tome of Legends could be a delightful little addition, since it cares about your commander entering the battlefield and that's all your deck is trying to do 😊
I'm not familiar with EDHREC much, so I can't say how popular of a commander it is. But I just built mono-blue braids (the one that lets everyone get a creature, artifact, or land from hand to battlefield at their upkeep). I built it as a mono-blue control deck. The idea is I get to "play" one permanent a turn while still holding up all my mana for interaction on my opponent's turns. This should allow me to survive whatever big things I'm giving my opponents, right? I love jank nonsense, and the only thing I love more is GOOD jank nonsense. More power to you Joey.
Also seems like a cool commander to rule zero into having multiple copies in the 99. You can even say that itll get the commander tax per time cast from any zone, given you should only want him in the deck to discard (but yeah, its 2 rule changes for a card)
This reminds me of the Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury deck I'm building. I only plan on casting the commander once, then using recursion effects like Sun Titan to bring it out repeatedly, and cards that either increase the dmg, or give me an additional etb effect.
I made a Circu, Dimir Lobotomist deck before Cedh brought his numbers up some. It was about cards like Lobotomy & Sadistic Sacrament. I would go through my opponent's decks and take out their winning pieces or best creatures so they would have to fight for a win.
I built a deck in each of the allied pairs, each helmed by an old Legends creature, they do almost nothing. I found it quite refreshing to build around characters that weird, Pavel Maliki for example is a Human without a profession type, so he's probably unemployed (and that explains why nobody believes he's really out to do good). Also, he's a Rakdos do-gooder, WotC colour pie just doesn't have room for such wild ideas (apparently). They're very fun to play, but half the fun is beating people down with a pile of cards that they'd normally be laughing at.
Just a random damage pinger that does more everytime i play it is Red dragon from dnd. 4 damage to each opponent reads as little but when you’ve been pinging everyone the entire game that 4 damage really starts becoming scary
On weird decks I built an "Anthem tribal" deck so I could slam all my weird little anthems into one deck with Ikra Sadiqi and Prava of the Steel Legion at the head, abd tbh last I looked that partner pair had sub 250 decks to their names, and the whole plan was to have enough anthems that I could create a lock that kept all but the largest creatures off the board and have bonkers huge basic tokens waddle over and bonk people. I found out in playing I could shrink my opponents creatures by -4/-4 and come screaming out of the gate with a lot of tokens
I made a sygg river guide Tron deck before there were any Tron suggestions on edhrec so I like to say I'm the first sygg Tron player lol. It's a goofy little build but I love it
My oldest deck is a Korlash Grandeur deck, which is the worst thing to make with my favourite card in the worst mono-colour to want multiples. There is exactly one card in black that can conditionally become a copy, a handful of bad and expensive copy tools, and one combo that doesn't even do anything the turn it drops down. And I don't care, it's funny to me.
I am consistently surprised at how unpopular the new Izoni from MKM is as a commander, every time I look at it on EDHRec it catches me off guard how few decks it has (319 at time of commenting). Sure, it is not the MOST powerful gulgari commander, but its ability to both make blockers and create card advantage, while also being a sac outlet feel really consistently strong whenever its in play. Maybe its overlooked bc of how 'generic' it feels, but it's honestly my favorite deck at the moment, which it was never supposed to be. It just plays so smoothly, while still being varied enough from game to game, playing well into a good range of power levels, and having some interesting decision points, that unless I'm playing into an extremely high power pod, its my go to deck.
Copys... okay, this is inspiring me, I have been wanting really bad to build a Phlage deck and I was considering a lot of random recursions, but... clones could work... hehehe
My favorite Mono Red Deck is my Tavern brawler karlach Deck. It's an Impulse Draw Strom Deck without storm payoffs. It's really fun to Play. And i have a lae'zel acolyte of bahamut Deck, i think like 10 others built this Deck. Those are not really Decks that shouldn't exist, but they aren't played very much.
Banding themed, Rigo Streetwise mentor, GW, 1 drop creatures only..double down on the challenge for fun, because the OP and pre scripted ones just get boring. Really enjoy that you made this from one of the most unplayable cards from a very over powered set.
What you describe here is pretty much why this format became the biggest and now the only mtg format. The clickbait title worked as well I was curious how you made it happen to discard him over and over again maybe in an endless loop but ofc I got disappointed. I thought you found some old future sight card that said all your cards in the deck are X and then cycle or whatever... Nvm just fell for the bait.
I think you'll get bored of this deck in no time. The appeal of "I've built a deck that only has 22 decks on edhrec" wears off after the first 2-3 games

They're very fun to play, but half the fun is beating people down with a pile of cards that they'd normally be laughing at.

Just a random damage pinger that does more everytime i play it is Red dragon from dnd. 4 damage to each opponent reads as little but when you’ve been pinging everyone the entire game that 4 damage really starts becoming scary

On weird decks I built an "Anthem tribal" deck so I could slam all my weird little anthems into one deck with Ikra Sadiqi and Prava of the Steel Legion at the head, abd tbh last I looked that partner pair had sub 250 decks to their names, and the whole plan was to have enough anthems that I could create a lock that kept all but the largest creatures off the board and have bonkers huge basic tokens waddle over and bonk people. I found out in playing I could shrink my opponents creatures by -4/-4 and come screaming out of the gate with a lot of tokens
I'd like to see the deck in action. It's one thing to build, but totally another to successful victory.
Joey might I suggest an arguably cooler commander for this deck than Skoa? Dong Zhou, The Tyrant
I made a sygg river guide Tron deck before there were any Tron suggestions on edhrec so I like to say I'm the first sygg Tron player lol.

My oldest deck is a Korlash Grandeur deck, which is the worst thing to make with my favourite card in the worst mono-colour to want multiples. There is exactly one card in black that can conditionally become a copy, a handful of bad and expensive copy tools, and one combo that doesn't even do anything the turn it drops down. And I don't care, it's funny to me.
I am consistently surprised at how unpopular the new Izoni from MKM is as a commander, every time I look at it on EDHRec it catches me off guard how few decks it has (319 at time of commenting). Sure, it is not the MOST powerful gulgari commander, but its ability to both make blockers and create card advantage, while also being a sac outlet feel really consistently strong whenever its in play. Maybe its overlooked bc of how 'generic' it feels, but it's honestly my favorite deck at the moment, which it was never supposed to be. It just plays so smoothly, while still being varied enough from game to game, playing well into a good range of power levels, and having some interesting decision points, that unless I'm playing into an extremely high power pod, its my go to deck.
Copys... okay, this is inspiring me, I have been wanting really bad to build a Phlage deck and I was considering a lot of random recursions, but... clones could work... hehehe

My favorite Mono Red Deck is my Tavern brawler karlach Deck. It's an Impulse Draw Strom Deck without storm payoffs. It's really fun to Play. And i have a lae'zel acolyte of bahamut Deck, i think like 10 others built this Deck. Those are not really Decks that shouldn't exist, but they aren't played very much.

What you describe here is pretty much why this format became the biggest and now the only mtg format. The clickbait title worked as well I was curious how you made it happen to discard him over and over again maybe in an endless loop but ofc I got disappointed. I thought you found some old future sight card that said all your cards in the deck are X and then cycle or whatever... Nvm just fell for the bait.

I think you'll get bored of this deck in no time. The appeal of "I've built a deck that only has 22 decks on edhrec" wears off after the first 2-3 games
