Glad to see Midori (the turbo Saturn) make this list!!! Unfortunately I got greedy last week and went for more boost and blew it up lol.... don't worry she will be back in the spring with a slightly upgraded motor this time so it shouldn't be an issue again, at least I hope lol
People hate on VQs but they're honestly good motors. Stay on top of your oil, its awesome when modded and fairly quick and reliable too. The HR and VHR motors also tolerate boost too. I have a lightly modded G37 sedan and it's a fun daily. Its not the fastest thing by any stretch, but it had 330 crank hp stock and it wouldn't shock me if it made close to 365 at the crank now. Even against manual or 6 spd auto 5.0l V8 mustangs or 392 chargers, it holds it's own pretty well. The V8s win, but the fact it can even stay next to them until like 100 mph is crazy.
If you like sleeper's that are weird and quick, look up Jafromobile's 4g63 swapped Elantra. It's one heck of a project that he's had for about a decade
That B15 Sentra SE-R has the same 6 speed trans that’s in the VQ maxima. Those 6 speed Nissan trans are so strong. Can hold 600hp all day unlike the kseries 6 speed trans
Oh one of my rivals during the shipyard commute, here in Bremerton, he drives a Maxima and he thinks he's so cool, I hate him! And he hates me and my Corolla. Yeah, he works at the shipyard, and here in Bremerton we call people who work in the shipyard - who aren't military - Squids. 😊
I have been a fan of maxima since my mom had a 91 5 speed and at 12 i stole it while she was sleeping my sisters boyfriend and my mom would let me drive it in the project parking lots and me and my friends took it to impress girls and it had no license plate on it because my mom is getting ready to sell it so we going to pick up the girls we drive by a Boston police officer and of course he turns around I go to punch it and I'm I'm ripping through the gears grinding most of them I pulled back into the project parking lot what's another cop joining the chase needless to say I got arrested in my mom's car got towed my older brother was so happy and impressed tell my mom go to 02 Maxima with a 6-speed transmission when I graduated high school I ended up buying it off my mom who is silver with black leather interior I had that car for 5 years in 225000 mi and still sold it for $4,500 which was a steal but i was into motorcycles by then but I always get an arguments with people and defend the Maxima defend the Maxima at least until 2003 04 and after I'm not a fan of especially after my 06 went into limp mode I just died in the parking lot left me stranded
David, I just wanna say thank you for all of the content you have ever produced. It’s been a long journey and I’m sure it hasn’t always been easy. You deserve all of the success you have attained and then some. Keep it up!
I like seeing cars like this way more than the typical and mainstream tuner cars. These cars are TRUE creativity and people who are invested in car culture. Tuning, personalizing and modifying cars no one would think to or think spending money on. I truly respect that. ALSO DAVID PLEASE BUY & BUILD A MAXIMA.
Sleepers are unique and different than trendy. Unfortunately they come at a cost of creativity and sometimes price. Love them because they're different.
My favourite is gotta be the Vibe review (the original sleeper civic is up there) because I own a Matrix XRS and an MR2 Spyder so I was glad the 2ZZ was finally getting the recognition it deserves. The engine may not be as capable as a K series for super crazy power, but it can do many things just as good (or even better) than the Honda motors.
I can't get over how awesome a mid-nineties LS swapped Lincoln Town Car with a manual transmission is. That's my top vote for sure. Lowered on those black wheels is killer. Nice job to that guy.
My favorite video for the longest time was the “Sleepers” documentary with the black regal GS! Made me love the random builds that people did in order to troll people
U should try and find some of the fastest NA VQs ik the VQ gets alot of hate but in my opinion it is the Pinnacle of Naturally aspirated V6 engines from Japan there are multiple guys making over 400whp on the VHR platform without even building the motor which is insane for a 3.7L 6 cylinder
@@Tachyon836 you need a lot of stuff roughly 10k in parts basically full Bolt ons plus JWT Stage 2 Cams and e85 if u wanna even get close to 400 u also will need a 2014+ VHR motor for some reason those motors flow a lot better. There are a few exceptions with some of the older 370z guys making upwards of 390+whp with just a few mods just depends on how healthy the motor is. If your G is AWD like mine u can kiss 400whp good bye we aren't making that much due to drivetrain loss most I've seen on AWD cars was like 385
These kinds of videos reviewing the oddball and underappreciated cars in the car scene, are my absolute favorites! I think I speak for a lot of people by saying that we would love to see more of these in the future! Keep up the hard work and looking forward to seeing what you have in store!
My sisters first car was a 1997 Volvo 850R that my parents bought for $1000. At the time I had no clue that they were super cool sleepers and just wrote it off as a grandma car. After it broke down for the third time my parents decides to crush it. I didn’t think anything of it until a few months ago when I started researching the car and saw that my favorite car reviewer TDIB reviewed a turbo 850. Now I’m really kicking myself that I didn’t take the car. Especially since the powertrain was in perfect condition.
My favorite sleeper I ever saw... 1985 VW golf. Kid I used to work with bought a corpse of a 911 that rear ended someone pretty badly. It took him a few years but he managed to get it running and driving. The oddest part was the wheels in the front were visually larger due to the vastly different hubs. However, it was stupid fast. It looked like hot garbage, but you wouldn't want to test it as it would eventually grip and just leave. But great vid either way.
I have a 09' Forester X non turbo. The previous gen gets all the love. The SH no one hardley touches. Mine is lowered 3 inches has 18x9.5 inch wheels but somehow most people don't know its lowered. It has a fully upgraded suspension. Basically all suspension upgrades you can buy for a STi fits on the Forester. It corners so hard I had to buy a proper race seat. Next is STi R180, 6 speed, axles, hubs and brakes. Then a turbo EZ30. My favorite out of all these is the Towncar.
What a well produced. Well chosen selection. And I gotta agree w/you re: ‘90s Maxima. My first stick drive impressed the hell out of me. My second but not second place was the stick version Acura TL w NSX engine. A BMW 5 beater. But what really excites me in the plain brown wrapper category? Is the new 2 ltr, 3 cylinder, 300 factory HP, TOYOTA Carolla/Matrix/Vibe replacement. A BEAST!
I have 2 Regals, one currently NA with a full suspension makeover, the other a stock supercharged model. Next time I'm in atlanta I'd be happy to let you drive one.
*Seeing that Nissan Sentra brought back some memories, a friend of mine had one that same orange color that was slammed on Niche blades with a crazy custom body kit and sound system in it*
This is my sweet spot, I loved this video. I could go for a series of videos like these. I'm all about the off the beaten path sleepers and Frankenstein builds. Loved it!
I have a buddy who lives around Atlanta with a 9 second srt8 jeep i have been trying to get him to email you to drive lol. Hopefully he does one of these days
Awesome to see the Regal in there. My Regal is even more of a sleeper (bone stock stance and factory everything on the outside) and runs high to mid 13’s until the cam get installed. ZZP is amazing!
My GTP will give that Turbo Regal a run. Probably wouldn't beat it, but would be fun. ZZP up here in Michigan is great. Ordered lots of parts for my supercharged GTP.
Honestly you should be a racecar driver man youd make a great fit you've driven 1000 of cars different set ups and haven't gotten into a crash, You should think about becoming a race car driver
I had a 2004 Celica gts back in 2010 that was turbocharged making 383whp. I can confirm the vvti-l crossover is nasty. It's so short though unlike vtec. It's only around 1200 rpm of lift, and when you're turbo'd it hit, then your shifting instantly. I owned the car N/A before turboing and even stock it still sounds super unique.
There's a dude on RUclips who has videos gapping a porsche and camaro in his maxima. It's awesome cause this dude is total dad mode, rolling in a maxima, throwing gears like his life depended on it and smoking cars that cost easily 4 times as much. Turbo VR6's have no chill. Some of my earliest youtube experiences was watching turbo VR6's beating everything, including Supras.
I've always thought about what it would be like to engine swap some motorcycle engines into small cars. Especially with some having better sound than some 4 cylinders

for me one of the funniest sleeper car platform is Subie Forester 2.0t or 2.5t tune it to like 500+ hp and see how people react (and then fix engine if you used 2.5t)
Ford panther platform, such as crown Vic, grand marquis etc. there great cars and there tough unfortunately everyone is using them all for derby cars. I own 3 of these cars
I love the content but the only thing I don’t like about these videos in particular is that the cars I like are more and more difficult to come by specifically the Regal. 😂😢
My favorite sleeper ive ever seen is a 1940's chevy 4 door sedan that was boosted c5 corvette swaped down to the suspension. Guy even custom made steel wheels with the oem centers to keep the look but get the traction. Was super well done, had no clue what it was until he poped the hood.

Danny's car has a turbo now... maybe go drive that again.

Yessss Lincoln number 1!!! Haha thats such a crazy build, im building another quirky Lincoln but definitely not an LS swap 😆
That last volvo was a stunner
My favorite sleeper I’ve seen has to be my buddys 2004 mercury marauder with the m112 super charger from a cobra. That thing rips!
the laugh in the first pull clip of the slingshot says everything lol
The Lincoln is great. Fiat 500 Abarth is my sleeper.

The jetta may be my favorite car you've reviewed. That, Ed's LP640 or the Volvo 850 T5 you did a while ago
I supercharged my Highlander, but unfortunately I had engine damage.
Omni GLH was peak sleeper
❤😂😢😮😅😊 that Marquis is sweet. I like that one a lot looks like a crown Vic but I don’t know it’s sweet as hell in my car don’t smell smell.

Does Jay still have the sleeper civic?
