Car Culture arguably saved me from a lifetime of no direction. It gave me a sense of community, purpose, and goals in life. However in the past ten years the car culture of 2012 is long gone and 2022 is almost unrecognizable... for better or for worse. Let's take a look back and see what's changed over the past decade in car culture. This is part 2 concluding this series for now!

“ if you can’t afford to do something legally, than you certainly can’t afford to do something carelessly illegal”. That’s a quote my dad always told me. The problem with these takeover are you’re taunting fate. If you can’t afford a track day or even a autocross ( which literally is like $40) than you can’t afford the hundreds of dollars worth of legal fees. And if you genuinely got no where to go. Do it away from the public where you aren’t terrorizing the general public and you’re minimizing the risk and affecting no one else.

I think many of us weren't expecting a part 2. As far as I am concerned, this is just a confirmation of who you are, and that is someone of good and ethical character. All of the topics you covered and re-affirmed in both videos was right.
My friends and I were already into the street scene with vehicles back before The Fast and the Furious came out. Speaking of which, when those movies were first dropping in theatres, yeah...we would drive from our small towns in southern Ontario to street race and drag race in the industrial parks in places like Mississauga and Brampton, in the areas of Toronto around the airport. Was it right? No. We did what we set out to do, away from the general public, knowing what the risks were, and then left to drive home in the wee hours of the morning. Since then, most of us have families, proper jobs, and merely mod and drive what we can (sometimes the family vehicles included), share knowledge and experience, and help newer generation drivers develop the same appreciation for different types of vehicles like you and your friends did in Virginia and Georgia.
I think you have taken the correct approach with your channel, and am looking forward to what's next...

These two videos were beyond on point. I can remember even back as far as 2002 when I was only 19 driving a 1994 Eagle Talon DL (SOHC). I met some pretty cool "low key" people who were into cars. We all knew my car was slow, but I had a lot of people egging me on to go to a track (drag, or Auto-X). Time and time again we proved how slow my car was. But it wasn't about how "slow" it was, but rather how much fun we all had at the track. Garage days were always a fun time, wrench a bit, hit up a track, and just have an all around good time. I can't really comment on the street scene back then other than to say, as you have already mentioned, it was way different, and way more chill. As the saying goes, its more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow. And to add to that, if you're going to build a fast car, take it to the track where they have trained professionals ready to step in if things get out of hand, and are ready to save someone. Not to mention, TDIB already touched base on the "cost" argument. I 💯% agree with that.

Bro! I loved the eagle talon. had an s13 and s14 zenki, because they were cheap, light and had a ton of aftermarket support. around the same time you had your talon. car culture was so different man, it was all about taking your shit box and trying to do the most to get power and it was fun as hell. word of mouth spread like wildfire. Only tutorials you had were forums with step by step photos to service your car, because there was no youtube at that time. websites like hot import nights and cardomain were central to finding out what people were doing to their cars and good places for ideas. Car culture today just defeats the purpose, if you told me you're selling an R34 for 700k i'd laugh and walk away. a 240 today goes for 10k or more which is egregious to say the least. If there is a car today that a teen can get into which epitomizes car culture it would be a late 90's eclipse.

We had a couple cops that were cool with us, they would let us do what we did as long as we were being "safe". The first video I enjoyed a lot, though I wanted to leave some of my thoughts on it but I saw it a few days late and it would have gotten lost in the swath of comments.
I started poking around the car hobby scene in 2007. I had, of all things at the time, a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT sedan. I was 19 when I got it. I loved it, I modded it, then just realized how bad they were (it broke a lot) and hated it lol. It was still quite an experience modding a VERY unloved car in the scene. Mine stood out, but barely. I did learn a lot, from the seven years I owned it, from 2007 to 2013, forums were still a common thing, social media was just, not taking off yet. While every place had its own thing going, Ive noticed that the late '00s and early '10s in the car scene still had that close knit vibe you described where you lived. Long Island NY felt the same way, tbh.
A lot of the gatekeepy norms are probably what put me off a lot when I look back on those days. Honestly I am glad that a lot of that sort of mindset is starting to fade. It makes no sense to berate others because "theyre new" or "they dont know yet". So help them! Dont be a dick, its easy and you feel good helping others learn something new and seeing what they do with that knowledge is really cool.
As for how it is today, Ive been away from car community stuff since 2017 or so. I used to have a really nice CM7 Accord (I miss it) but I got so fed up of people being so damn egotistical, confrontational, gatekeepy and downright bad vibes. I love Hondas but I was tired of so much negativity with Honda communities I kept finding, both online and IRL. Like, I knew people didnt like my Accord (it was a lowered coupe with red rally armors lmao) and I never cared that others ragged on it. What I called out was dudes *always* shit talking others simply because they had massive clout and thought their clout/popularity absolved them from any wrong doing in whatever community they were in. Having $3K Works VSXX wheels on your 7th gen Accord with your $4K worth of parts from Japan to make it look like a Honda Inspire doesnt mean you can talk shit and be an asshat and nobody can stop you. Thats the mindset that ultimately drove me away and sadly Ive never been able to sort of find that chill vibe I remember over ten years ago. It sucks, I miss it but I still love cars. Just, Im always on the outside looking in these days.

Fast forward to today and I definitely realized that it’s not even about cars anymore to an extent. Of course it’s revolved around cars, but if your ride isn’t trendy or doesn’t have some sort of internet clout no one will bat an eye. I now have an 85’ Monte SS I would take out to meets for old times sake and sure it’s an oddball to have out at a mostly import/newer domestic crowd nor do I expect droves of people to ask about it, but it doesn’t seem like anyone really appreciates diversity much these days. I got into car culture in the late 90s as a little kid. Going to the Goodguy show and drag strips with my dad was my start. It was the era of street rods and muscle cars were just getting collectible. Anything with 4 doors was undesirable as well as station wagons. Most cars were getting 350 chevy engine swaps as the ls hadn't hit the aftermarket in any real number and Japanese cars just weren't cared for. Rat rods were considered unfinished junk, square body trucks were good for lifting and use in a mud pit or as a firewood hauler and big cars were designated for demolition derbies. Noone was talking about tuning computers in any real sense and everything was bright red or yellow with chrome everything. A 57 chevy or 40 ford was the coolest thing you could own. And c3 and c4 corvettes, as well as anything made after 1971 was just considered junk. The car scene is way more broad now. Unfortunately, many of the cars I like now were lost to either derbies, mud bogs, Cash for clunkers, or attrition and the thought of owning anything from before 1973 is impossible without either getting a rotted out heap or robbing a bank. Cars with naturally aspirated v6 engines are making more power than many of the old big blocks without any tuning and 100,000miles is hardly considered high mileage. The only problem with this massive growth is that it has caused way more in fighting and many of the groups are at odds in every way beyond the cars. It's considered a political statement to own a corvette or classic car and it's the same if you own a euro or Japanese car. Cars don't have to be super old to be cool either. Now a car that's 10 years old is just as fair game as a 54 chevy was in the 90s. While the appeal has broadened it seems that the groups are more divided and EVERYTHING has to be some "stance" for something and appreciating one car can malign you from several groups you are also into. I miss when it was just a debate of cragars vs Americans racing wheels or chevy 350 vs ford flathead vs dodge 440. I don't miss how one dimensional it felt but I definitely wouldn't mind everyone cutting it out with being so tense over anything setting them off. It's funny, I remember when the dodge charger became suddenly cool again because the fast and the furious showed they could be something besides general Lee replicas. Now THAT was one hell of a turn.

Forza Horizon lobbies, Harlem shake challenges, and car RUclips was starting to pick up, alongside car photography on Tumblr. Now It's just filled with clout chasing videos, mean-ass stance peeps, and enthusiasts who swear they're the best just because they have expensive parts. I'm in my late 20s now, so maybe I'm becoming an old head. But these new enthusiasts nowadays don't understand what it means to be a car enthusiast. Like you said, it's a fashion trend, rather than a communal hobby. And nobody wants to teach/help each other. The 2010s was all about learning together. Maybe it's a millennial+ thing, but man I sure do miss it. I wanna pass on the support and advice I received from the OGs back in the 2000s-2010s. I met most of my current friends around that time and I couldn't imagine not having These memories. My first Southern Worthersee (SoWo) experience was also in 2012, along with my first SouthrnFresh experience. Now being in my 30's and living 800 miles from GA, I look back fondly at these memories, and I do really wish that the overall car scene could take notes from the past. I currently help Co-chair a group here in OKC called WETDUB. If you are ever out in the OKC area we do chill, laid back, planned meets monthly. Thank you for the content. I love the videos.

Personally the number 1 reason why car culture has changed is because the prices for all "cool" cars have skyrocketed to insane levels in the past few years. $100K for a 90s Toyota that would lose to a modern minivan is honestly absurd.

I agree with you man. Car culture now, for the most part is trash. Most of the younger guys want to go to the local meets and just rev up, do burn outs or leave trash everywhere and get everyone run off. Ever since the early 2000s there was always a car meet somewhere on Fridays and Saturdays that anyone could go to and everyone was welcome that wanted to act right. Now no one wants to host a meet because the dumb kids always show up with their straight piped truck or straight piped single cam Civic and leave it on the limiter for what seems like whole minutes. Then they want to do burn outs, leave trash or get into fights. Shortly after these young guys show up usually the police are right behind them and send everyone home. When I was younger it was frowned upon to be a douche that messed up everything for others. It genuinely seems like the younger crowd aim to be that douche and mess everything up for everyone else.

Moreover, it's impossible to gatekeep because of the nature of the culture itself. Unless someone says something 'racist' or something like that, people just can't be bothered to care.
It's incredible how strange the bar is for people to care about a hobby is nowadays. Actually keeping it respectable, especially so the cops don't get called and ruin the night, nah. People saying mean things, nah. Someone saying something that makes them an '-ist' (depending on who they are), NOW THAT'S REAL.

Before I graduated HS in 2010 I had already owned 6 or 7 s13 240s. I paid 1200 for the most expensive one which probably had less than 120k miles and was clean and bone stock. Imports used to be super cheap because nobody wanted them, back then an import that ran 10s were an extreme rarity. I was the only one in my HS with a modified car, let alone an import, good times.

I grew up in San Diego and started going to meets when I bought my Evo 9 in 2007. The meets back then were a good mix of hanging with people who had the same car as you, and groups of people who just loved cars in general. The people we ran with were either guys who had the came car as you, or were just people who loved cars in general. They were always nice and chill, and we usually made sure the businesses we met at were okay with us meeting there, and if was something like a food place we'd bring a ton of business. We weren't there to cause any kind of trouble, we just went to hang out. Those guys became family, brothers and sisters, and it was great. I was in the Navy, and luckily I was stationed close to home and was able to make friends with guys in the service who were enthusiasts too. I remember coming back from a deployment one time and went to a meet, and it just didn't feel the same. It wasn't the same people, they were younger guys who were finally able to afford the kind of cars we ran with and they changed the culture in a negative way. The last one I went to, we met at an In n Out and the honda guys showed up (not bashing hondas, it just happened to be that group that had them) and started doing burnouts in front of us. I stopped going after that, and didn't associate with any groups or anything after that. I remember feeling pretty bummed out because it was always so fun, going to BBQ's and doing mountain runs around Palomar Mountain. I hate what its become, and you pointed out exactly the things that made meets and car culture the way it is today. Funny thing is, the people today will look back with "rose colored glasses" and reminisce like we do about our day.

Around 2012 our local car scene was pretty simple. We met at the local Sheetz parking lot and just hung out talking about cars. The local police would park with us. I think it was because our cars seemed to make other people show off while passing so they'd go after the assholes that ruined it for us. The fastest car around was a 500 hp SRT4 PT Cruiser. Our cruises were never announced online prior to them happening.
