  • The Aussie Fisherman Greg, When fishing for mudcrabs, showing how to catch and handle crabs. How to bait up and set a crabpot.
When you pull up a crabpot with a lot of crabs in it. I like to turn the pot upside down in the water before I take the crabpot out and into the boat. The reason I do that is to get all the crabs down onto the door of the pot. So when you put the crabpot on the floor of the boat. Too get the crabs out, you don't have to turn the pot over. Every time you turn the pot over the crabs, get upset and start biting each other. Causing a lot of damage and sometimes death. So this way especially for people with little experience is a lot safer. You just undo the door and let them walk out, preferably one at a time. When you have one out, just put the pot down until you are ready for the next crab. You can let the unwanted ones go ( female, undersized, and empty mudcrabs) .Tie up the full male mudcrab.
It is always better to tie up the mudcrabs so they don't bite each other or bite you 😉.
Like I said in the video, Mullet heads are really good bait. Whatever you use for baiting your crabpots, make sure it is fresh. Don't believe that story about the smelly the bait is the better it is. That is not right. I like to tie my crabpot to a solid mangrove tree, in case of a storm where you get a lot of fresh water coming down the creek or the big tides we get in northqueenland.
I try to give you a couple of tips in every video.

Hi mate, when we say a mudcrab is rock hard, it means that the mudcrab is, in most cases is full of meat. When the shell is soft the mudcrab will have no meat in it at all and should be released so it can fill up with meat, in 3 or 4 weeks. Hope that helps cheers Greg 😊.

How many times have you been pinched.

Hi mate I been pinched (bitten) heaps of times. When you been doing this job for so long you get a bit careless at times. You forget how quick a mudcrab can be to bit you. The bit is usually very painful. Cheers Greg 😊.

Hi mate, I will do a hole video on baiting crabpots to catch mudcrabs. There is a lot more to know about this than just throwing a bait in the pot. Cheers, Greg 😊.
