- The Aussie Fishermen Greg, fishing for big mudcrabs in the crocodile infected waters of North Queensland. Using these ultimate pro crabpots.
I make sure that the crabs are down on the door of the pot before I lift it into the boat. Then you don't have to turn the crabpot over in the boat. That way you don't upset the crabs. Which will stop a lot of damage to the mudcrabs.
In Queensland we have to release any female and under size mudcrabs.
I tie up the full male mudcrabs. Release a small bream that was in the pot. He would have swam out when the tide got lower. I put 3 excluders in my crabpots, they let most of the small crabs and fish out. I put one in the top of the crabpot for a different reason. In Queensland we have a lot of water rats. They get into your crabpot at low tide to eat the bait. So when the tide comes back in they forget how they got into the pot, so the water rat will chew a hole in the pot to escape. Most of the holes you get in your crabpot in Queensland are most probably done by these guys. The top hole gives them a easy way out.
I put a fresh mullet head for bait.
I like giving the local fish hawks a feed. They follow me until I give them a piece of mullet head.
