I know this is old but last comment is less than a year old, so here we go. Stompin’ Tom was born in New Brunswick, where his closest blood relatives lived, he was born out of wedlock which was still a big social no no in the late 1940’s-1950’s. So his mother bummed and travelled all across Canada visiting family and friends when they could and by the time he was a few years old had travelled the country at least a few times, when back in NB or NS his mom was arrested for stealing food and separated him from his mother moving him in with a foster family in skinners pond PEI hoping the small island would keep him from trying to escape to travel or to find his mom until one day he escaped PEI headed to NFLD hoping they would think he went the opposite direction to the mainland. And from there bummed and travelled all over the country until he became famous at the horseshoe tavern. So by definition the man is a New Brunswicker, but more importantly if you’ve listened to even a quarter of his music or knew anything about the man (which aside from his songs, books and local stories/legends, I don’t know anything else about the man) but I’d bet my old cowboy hat and guitar if you asked him when he was alive where he was from he would have said something like “I am CANADIAN” because he viewed all of Canada as his home because that was his life “all of Canada”. I would like to point out two songs to reinforce what I have said 1. “The ballad of Stompin’ Tom” it’s basically his life story. 2. “My Stompin’ Grounds” where he basically answers the question everyone was asking him then and now “where do you call home?” His answer: “all across Canada”. And with Stompin’ Tom you can analyze the man through his music, because unlike most artists he wrote basically every song he sang and they we’re almost all based on his experience and knowledge (yea I know he did a few cover songs like “green, green grass of home” and I’m sure he had help writing some songs but it was mostly all him.). And that is why he earned the title of “The Canadian Troubadour”. Since I’ve gone this far I will continue, because his life story and music alone are obviously enough to make him a Canadian Legend or even a world wide music legend because that’s all most people know and talk about, but one of the greatest things about this man that is rarely talked about is his ground breaking and contribution to Canadian Music artists. When he got started none of the Canadian radio stations would play his music and was being told if he wanted on their station to go to the states like Nashville and have it recorded there because they have the best recording tech and will sound good on our station. Well Mr. Connors being a proud Canadian thought it was ridiculous and insulting that a Canadian artist had to travel to a different country just so he could record his music to effectively promote and sell his music in HIS country, so he put a list together of the recording equipment they were using at I believe the RCA recording studio in Nashville. He bought the equipment and set up a recording studio and publishing company in Toronto and they would take on any Canadian artist no matter their genre of music. Even after this when taking his music that was recorded with the best tech of the time the radio stations still would give him the same line and he would call them on their BS saying how his music was recorded on the same equipment that they were playing the likes of George Jones on their station, but eventually he was able to get on a few stations and it grew from there. Now Canadian music artists always have been and still are to an extent forced to to move or frequent travel to the USA for a chance to have a career in music or remain here to starve doing what they want or go get a job they don’t want. A lot of the artists that signed up with them may not have become super famous and rich but it gave them a chance and turned many from “starving artists” to at least artists that could pay rent and buy groceries and still make a career of what they love. Because until he did it was basically unheard of a Canadian artist to have their music played on the radio in Canada without having recorded and touring abroad to the USA or Europe. So to every Canadian Music artist today that is able to make a living without leaving Canada can thank basically only one man,... Mr. Stompin’ Tom Connors.

+john schober I love those old Prairie hotel chains. Somebody should "resurrect" 'em, just as they were, restored as historically accurate as possible, market the whole thing as a "bed & breakfast" - I'd bet a lot of Japanese tourists would pay to trek around on the old rodeo circuits, rent 'em an old pickup truck & wardrobe from the western-wear etc etc. Like one enormous "dude ranch" ha-ha. Sound crazy, I know. But hey, at least that way the rates would be high enough to keep all of the meth heads from moving in. It's almost possible to romanticize the old WINO generation who hung on in the Cecil Hotels, the Alec Arms in Lethbridge - but THIS generation of recreational dopers won't lend itself to tomorrow's Nostalgia....

I appreciate that, but these are people whose names are household words in every corner of the globe. Is it fair to the legacy of Williams, Cash and Jones to add Conners' name to their list? Hank Snow is certainly an artist of the same stature.
I could make a similar claim that David Allen Coe belongs in that stream of names, but it only dilutes their significance.
Likewise, Conners is surely talented, but let's be honest, he's a regional legend. Be fair to Cash, Williams and Jones.
