      Birds are pretty good at self regulating feeding when given good nutrition. They do change weight from day to day. I can feel the weight changes from day to day. My birds insist on getting their birdie muffins made from the same ingredients Jamie show with an egg mixed in and baked.

    After having my cockatiel for 3 years I found a way for him to eat veggies. I don't know what age he was when I got him and he was an only seed eater, so just for him to eat pellets was an ordeal already. He started eating harrison's super fine because it looks like millet a bit. Then I realised he only would eat anything that's brown. Other colours are not acceptable...🤷. So now I blend all veggies a lot (like baby food) addind a little bit of beetroot so the whole thing turns brown instead of green. I also freeze in an ice cube tray and thaw "an ice cube" a day. It fucking works!! I just discovered this 3 weeks ago! Yaayyy! I'm so happy! He now eats a lot of different things. Brown is the key.

    My birds love veggies..even my picky amazon and little corella. They both were on a nut and seed only diet (amazon mostly ate peanuts). Hated veggies and pellets, wouldn't touch them. They absolutely love them, I've had both for about a year now. My amazons brown feathers are molting out and she looks gorgeous 💚

    • @n.r.2162
      @n.r.2162 3 года назад

      @@Abby-gp9fs I started by putting small pieces of the chop in their pellets, usually if they're mixed they will attempt to eat it, but I would only put the tiniest bit and increase each day. Try giving chopped up veggies in a pistachio shell or hollowed out almond shell. My Amazon liked some of her veggies soft before I gave them to her too. It takes time but they'll try them eventually if you keep trying:)

    How do I get my bird to eat foods like this when he refuses to try anything that’s not dry and crispy? The only fruit he’ll eat is mandarins because he can hold it and bite a hole to eat from without feeling moisture.

      I feed my conures a mixture of chopped up freeze-dried fruits and veggies. They love the crunch, (they hate wet food on their feet too) and they will take the food over to their water bowl and dunk it in for a little food fun and moisture. Kind of an expensive diet, and you have to keep it in an airtight moisture free container, but it keeps me from buying a bunch of fresh stuff that goes bad. Freeze drying retains 90% of the nutrition of fresh food. Peas, corn, spinach, kale, broccoli, berries and kiwi are favorites. www.northbaytrading.com/dried-vegetables/freeze-dried-vegetables/

    I have recently purchased your Natural Feeding System cookbooks, which are everything and more than I expected. I'm really excited about starting my flock on a better diet and am currently sprouting the beans for the summer recipe. My question is, since the sprouts nutritional value changes as they grow, when is the optimal time to harvest them for the recipes for your fids? We humans may prefer a longer growth for consumption, but it may differ for our companions. So, how long do you let the root grow? Quarter inch, half inch or longer? Hope to hear from you soon, as I can't wait to make this recipe. Thank you for your time!

    So I just adopted a green cheek conure who is around 12 and came with a few human problems and also has always refused to eat chop. I have already made huge breakthroughs with her biting problem and she is now seeking petting from my hands.Her previous care taker did not spend a lot of time with her, and the owner before her was a young girl who was afraid of being bit so she would wear heavy thick leather gloves and that is what caused the hand anxiety. But so far we have made leaps and bounds with hand trust and friendliness. So because the food thing is an issue I have been trying one different veggie or fruit daily to find out what she likes and what she doesn't like, that way when I make her food I can learn the things to avoid putting in. So far she will not even look at the dish of chop, almost like it's not even there she on purposely ignores it. So far I have tried putting out sweet potatoes, strawberries, peas, carrots, and quinoa. Each put out at separate times. No interest at all. I know she needs to eat these things but there is no way to convince her how good it is for her. I don't know when she developed this dislike of chopped foods or if she has ever even eaten anything like it before. But because I now love her dearly I want for her to live a long life and be healthy. Any advise?

    I have an eclectus and we feed her the best food we can: fifty-fifty Harisson's extruded and fresh fruit and vegetables. But she has been having health problems like yellow feathers and plucking on the belly and neck. I'll try your recipes but one question: I haven't found how much I need to give to an eclectus parrot. Maybe you don't know as you don't have one, but based on your XP, for a 350g bird, is 40g ok?

    How much food should you give a bird each time you feed them? How many times a day do you give them a meal (like breakfast, lunch, dinner, or something like that)? And is it OK to just have a bowl of (dry) food in the cage all the time?

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  5 лет назад +1

      If you want them eat fresh food well, having access to dry food will just be self-sabotaging. I always start with 1-2 TBSP of food (remember this meal is very dense) and cut back from there depending on how many leftovers there are. Eventually you will find the ideal amount for your bird. I feed two meals.

    I recently bought your book ^_^ my sprouts are almost sprouted and am looking forward to cooking a summer batch (in aus)! My 5 month Green Cheek eats pellets - he had always had veggies on offer at the same time as pellets, so only went for the pellets. Any tips on converting to eating veggies in the morning? At the moment he just waits till the pellets come out for an hour at dinner time and stuffs his face!
    I was thinking just chop everything really small as you suggest, and mix pellets in with the veggies in the morning, and reduce the pellets in the veggie mix over time? My worry is that as long as there are pellets in the afternoon he will just wait for those. Should I gradually reduce the amount of pellets offered in the evening too?
    Any tips to convert safely would be so appreciated. Cant wait to start a new healthier chapter :-) Thanks!!

    I have a few questions, but let's start with the most obvious one. I have a Galag that according to the leg band is 15 years old. I have had her for 3 years. As far as I know she has always been feed seeds. What are the first steps in putting her on a better diet? I purchased your books and some of the pellets (which she ignored), but where to start? Thanks in advance.

I now know that this isn’t very healthy but no matter what I can’t get them to eat anything else other than their seed. Do you know any tricks that will help then to eat their fruits and veggies?

    Would this differ much for a stubborn parrotlet? I'm struggling to get little Kiwi to eat anything mushy, hot or cold. He's been brought up eating a lot of cold crunchy foods (his original owner fed him only chunks of veggies/fruit and seed so anything this colourful and small isnt appealing atm) and he will pick out the seeds of strawberries/kiwis and flick anything gooey away haha

    Would these recipes be okay for a budgie, or are they tailored for larger parrots? 🦜

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  5 лет назад +1

      We had budgies at the time we created it so all the recipes are suitable for ALL sizes and types of parrots except the lory or lorikeet since their diets are nectar-based. We use the budgies as taste testers in many recipes, just keep in mind to size them down for that size bird. We were creating for a larger flock! I go over in more detail how to tailor recipes on my patreon www.patreon.com/birdtricks as some of my patrons have budgies as well.

    I really want and need to get my cockatiel on a healthy diet while she is still young. She does nibble on veggies and pellets, but never enough.
    And it's also impossible to convert your parrot when you have panicked family members constantly accusing you of starving the bird. 😑 I dont think I can take it anymore 😩

    my bird just kicks our the pellets to get the seeds.. and is afraid to try any veggies... he's 10 weeks old and I got him 100% untame... he's stepping up for millet and target training for millet but he won't eat his pellets no matter how hard I try! I even put a little on the millet and he won't eat it... I've mushed it up with a little water and I've tried putting it with seeds but he just won't eat them... helppppp... they're not your pellets as they wouldn't ship to me but I don't have many seeds left from the previous owner and I don't want him to starve

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  5 лет назад +2

      I always start with more than they can eat so that you can give less each time until you find your bird's amount. So start with a generous tablespoon or two, and then lessen from there as there are leftovers. Also keep in mind sometimes their appetites change with seasons (during hormone season my birds consume more!) so excited you're getting this, thank you for the support!

    What patreon tier gets the recipe? And will my bird lose a lot of weight on a more natural/healthier diet? My quaker parrot is slightly underweight right now so im afraid to give him anything thatll make him thinner.

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  5 лет назад +1

      April McKinney the cockatoo tier 😊 they get a new recipe every month called Tasty Tuesday.
      As for weight, every bird is different so I’d recommend weighing daily for a week at the same time before switching to get a base line of his current weight and then make the switch and continue to monitor fluctuations daily to be sure. You can feed unlimited amounts of veggies.

      @@kristenelizabeth4268 When weaning our birds we would wean them onto PELLETS and not seed. We would offer a variety of "treats" like nuts and seed every so often and once they try them they're usually hooked so you can reserve them as training treats only. But a bird should be weaned onto healthy foods and pellets and not seed. But you're at a point where it's hard to undo now and your bird could choose to starve over eating anything other than seed, is it still hand feeding?

    • @kristenelizabeth4268
      @kristenelizabeth4268 5 лет назад +1

      @@BirdTricks Yes, he is 4 months old and fully weaned. The breeder said he refused to eat pellets so he gave seeds, and said to leave seeds available at all times. When I've tried to refrain him from seeds and feed him fresh foods he will only take a couple bites and that's it! So then I freak out thinking he's starving and I cave in😭
