    Addendum to my previous comment - I did add the pickup spacer and upgraded the tuners. But the best upgrade I found is to replace the soft wood (pine?) bridge support with a rosewood or ebony one. Volume and sustain are greatly improved! Also, the fretboard is very thirsty - I applied several coats of mineral oil and this improved the "feel" quite a bit. I absolutely love this guitar!

    Just received my Amazon Cherry Red version. No noxious odors noted. No fret sprout whatsoever. No binding "bleed" anywhere. A few polishing/buffing flaws here and there. Overall an amazing value at $179. I will add the pickup spacer and will replace the strings with D'Addario Half-Rounds and the tuners with Gotoh keystone-style. No other modifications planned. Thanks for watching and commenting! I didn’t notice any additional 60 cycle after raising the pup. If anything, I believe it to be cleaner. P90 poles to bottom of strings are about 2.5 mm on the bass end and 2.25 on the treble end. I think the shim I used here was good for what I was needed. It still allows for individual pole adjusting and I can still bring the action down a tad if needed.

    Mr. Stewart, On your recommendation I purchased the GB-300 in natural finish and its a really great guitar a welcome change from the strat, tele hegemony that floods the market. I purchased a new nut a Tusq and some flat wound strings. I'm a little shy about stripping her down to her knickers to make the changes but will persevere. (No guitar techs for a 140 mile radius and even then its kind of shakey since the plague). The only time I went to the tech desk at GC they quoted the woman who took it in for me 600$ for a string change and the associated setup work.
    My primary point is to thank you for your honest and accurate reviews. I'm looking for a tele style guitar now, one with a hollow/semi hollow body and coil splitting could you make a suggestion please. Keep up the good work your a valuable asset to the online guitar universe.

    • @stephanpayne1841
      @stephanpayne1841 2 года назад +1

      I forgot to add I also got the pick up spacers to raise the pup closer to the strings. On the recommendation of Matt another YT contributor I lowered the bridge on my SX tele to get some twang in the sound. Before that it was lacking a tWanger. Sometimes adjustments to guitars seem counter intuitive.
      My bucket list is to modify the GB-003 with a cutaway and a Guitar Fetish floating tremolo, a Bigsby type Trem that attaches only to the bottom strap button so no screws in the soundboard or body of the instrument. That will take care of the wiggle stick now A cutaway would sure be sweet. If a luthier appears somewhere in my territory I might pick up another 003 and have the cutaway mod done to it.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  2 года назад

      Hi Stephen…congrats on your new Grote Jazz box! Doing the setup work yourself is not only going to save you the $$, but allows you to know the instrument a lot better and get it setup to YOUR specifications. Truly appreciate your stopping in to the channel and the kind comments here! Much appreciated! If you are looking for a good budget Thinline Tele style, IYV has the ITF-300 NA with dual humbuckers and they have the ITF-400 TRD with dual P90’s as well. Neither has coil splitting, but I know some who have modded the 300 NA to coil splitting. The 400 has P90’s so no need (they are single coils). Both are very nice guitars and well worth the current cost on Amazon.

      @@stephanpayne1841
      P90’s like to be closer to the strings…wide, flat magnets (no poles). Just the nature of the beast…😎
      You can of course mod your guitar to whatever you want, but I would not add anything to the Jazz box outside of raising the dogear pup. You could simply grab a cut-away style like the IYV styles have and have both!! 😎👍

    In your more recent review you mentioned that you ended up taking the shim out and so leaving the P-90 at the stock position. Perhap somehow you could update your review or note it somehow. That could save some people from the cost of buying a shim. I do agree with your decision to remove the pickguard and the truss rod cover looks better too.

    Looking at 16:36 to the video, it appears the strings are heavily biased to the treble side of the fretboard (high e appears on the binding), and not located over the P90 nubs. Assuming you've not adjusted it by, that's like caused by the floating bridge having shifted to the treble side of the guitar. Should be slid back so everything lines up again. Great vid that showed me how to do the shim, and where to get it, which is nice. Hate it when someone tells me to get something and then neglects to mention where, what part no., etc.

    Great clip. This looks like a great guitar. I had two questions: One, how wide is the nut width? (I really favor wider nuts/necks). And second, how much does the guitar weigh? I'm coming at this from a Hofner Club Bass (weight just over 5lbs) so I'm spoiled.

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting David…I am on the road so not in the studio to double check, but as I recall the nut was 42mm and the fretboard was a standard Asian width at 350mm. Weight as I recall was around 8 lbs

      Thanks for watching and commenting! At this point, no change is planned. After raising the pup, I like the sound. It is more level now in the mids, with a bit more brightness to it. I don’t think a $20 P90 would give you much, but I suppose you could try. What sound are you going for?

  • @canspank2836

    What do you think of Seymour Duncan SHPR-1b P-Rails - That claims to keep the p90 as an option but adding the humbucker sound as a option

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 года назад +1

      I have never used them, but heard good things about the Seymour Duncan P-Rails and the Phat Cats...
      Just my understanding is that the coil wiring is not like a “true” P90 standard single coil.

    Jimmy goes to pick out bolt (nut?) w/ finger & screwdriver
    me: that's not going to work
    5 seconds later, it's out.
    me: oh!
    me (looking at pick up shim) : there's no way to get it under the pick up, the wire's in the way.
    Jimmy puts it on from the top.
    me: oh!
    I feel like the kid in the Far Side cartoon pushing on the door to the School for the Gifted marked "Pull"
    at least I didn't ask why you didn't do it on the bench. ;-)
    now that we've established that I am fairly dim, here's a question.
    why are the strings not over the magnet poles?
    they appear to be "in between" @17:26.
    is that correct/normal?
    and, finally - what is the other electric on the floor stand throughout the video?

      Oh, yeah...the string/pole relationship. It’s strictly a trick of the camera angle. The strings and poles reside nicely over each other, just like peanut butter and Jelly!
      The other guitar in the shot....it’s the IYV BM-200 Brian May “Red Special” copy. Great guitar! I have a couple reviews/demos on it. Same company that makes the Thomman “Harley Benton” version of it, except mo’ better! Have a look! 👀

      Ha...ha...I get it man! Feel the exact same way sometimes! The only thing about shimming up a P90 without removing it, is you don’t know if the factory gave you enough wire to “go over” the pup until you open it up. This technique works “most of the time”! 😎

      Yeah, the Godin is a very similar style. There are a few in this Jazz box style. I thought it more styled after the Epi Century 66 as well. Both these guitars are over $700, so nothing really close to the price you pay for the Grote. A very good buy and vibe on the Grote for a very reasonable price. I did some small mods on mine, and after shimming the P90 up, it’s very nice!

  • @patrickkilduff5272
    @patrickkilduff5272 3 года назад +1

    To anyone who wants to do this kind of mod...take your fucking strings off first! Jesus Christ dude! And don't do it on your lap...lay it down on a table with a cloth underneath. Don't make it harder on yourself.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 года назад +2

      Ok....so I explained the reasons why I did this the way I did. Wasn’t trying to make it harder on myself or anybody else. Very minor “quick mods” easily done without much fuss. I just restrung the guitar in a prior video, and decided then that the pup needed raising, and Grote was kind enough to send me the new (old) truss rod cover. Nothing I needed my bench for here....sorry to upset you, but the idea was to show that you didn’t really need to remove strings, or the pup, nor preparing a bench for minor “mod” work.
      I address this at the beginning of the video....
