- On April 24th a big deathmatch was hosted on Romero's Discord server. There was a second invite-only server where a small amount of players got the opportunity to duel against John himself.
There was a lot of chatter going on in the voice channel, so I did my best to isolate John's reactions. That's why he may sound a bit weird or cut off.
All in all I had a great time and John was very chill with answering everyone's questions. Thanks for the opportunity!

If you have to defeat John Romero in order to win the game, then Decino just became one of the few people on Earth to have truly beaten Doom
Which also technically means that each time John dies it counts as a full playthrough of Doom.

I can't really think of any other game dev that would do anything like this. Maybe devs playing some multiplayer games with fans, for the sake of PR, but not out of genuine passion for it.
He got fired from ID for playing too much DooM Deathmatch instead of working on Quake titles..

Romero is truly one of the happiest game developers there can be. He is the man who helped to create one of the most famous PC games ever when still in his twenties, he's had his ups and downs, but he doesn't hold any grudge, still enjoying his legacy and interacting with the community. A real rockstar of the gamedev!
although he didnt do that much developing quake but besides that hes cool also why does nobody mention carmack the 4th dimensional being he is :(

I think this is even crazier. John somehow got hit by the BFG projectile before he respawned and got killed immediately by the BFG tracers.

The joy in Romero's voice as he's playing is probably the same as it was 27 years ago when the game came out. Heartwarming.

It's interesting how Romero uses the BFG the "dev intended way" while Decino goes for prefired tracer kills, a great reminder of how far this game has come

Aye. The tracer blast only comes out in the 3rd explosion frame of the ball, so exploding it early lets you fire off the tracers early. Especially because the tracers deal so much more damage than the ball and are more forgiving to aim.

This matchs was like seeing a man spit in the face of God. But man, we watched Decinos training, not only only beating hundreds of maps but also studying the code itself of the game

Doom multiplayer has always been in a league of it's own. You need lightning fast reflexes, a complete knowledge of the maps, weapons, powerups and your enemy as well as a brain with more processing power than any cpu that could possibly be conceived. Great video Decino!

Even in this small stage, Doom can give you the absolute deathmatch experience. Non-stop action, with amazing controls and responsiveness and speed. No other game can reach that degree of excellence, never!
Unreal Tournament, Counter-Strike and Quake surpassed it greatly I think. It's still awesome tho
