Then I got a federal tax rebate for $4502, because it was a plug-in. So I got the car for $26K. It drives nice and smooth. I have a 6 speed Porsche if I need to drive fast. I'm really liking the exterior design of this new one, especially the rear quarter which reminds me of the Tesla Model 3. As a previous Prius owner, it's actually a decent car to drive, and not as slow as one would think. But I missed being able to go on dirt trailheads and wander off on the many forest roads here in the West. So after a year, got myself a Toyota FJ Cruiser.
Ryan, I’m so jealous that you’re in warm San Diego! Great review on the new Prius. It’s too bad that it doesn’t have the ground clearance like ours Subie’s. If it did, we’d sell our Outback and Forester just to get the mpg. We have a friend who owns the last generation Prius but she lives in Wenatchee and their great with plowing the roads. Enjoy your warm weather bc when you come back home, we’re expecting a daytime highs of 14 degrees here in the Cashmere / Leavenworth areas.
I'm really excited to see you do a winter test. My PNW driveway is steep and occasionally snowy. I'd like to know if this might be adequate, or should I wait for the inevitable Subaru hybrid sedans.
Even a mild E-AWD with decent winter tires sgouks should be fine in winter. I have a 2019 Rav4 hybrid here in Alberta, Canada and while the EAWD doesn't do much to improve performance its very good in winter (although like many AWD systems it's reactive not predictive).
@@James-il3tq I've got a really steep driveway. If it snows, zero chance of a 2wd getting up until I clear and salt. My Impreza has struggled a couple times. I worry a fwd biased AWD system, like a Rav4 wouldn't cut it. Spinning the front, and then power to the rear to try and bail out the fronts. Symmetrical AWD is just so good.
@@MOLRobocop There’s a video of some guy from Canada testing the AWDe in the previous model that only had 7HP in the rear electric motor, going up a steep icy driveway, stopping midway and the Prius climbed it without any problems. They of course outfitted the car with snow tires.
Personally I'd rather spend same money on a Rav4 hybrid. Much larger, 40mpg, more passenger room (especially headroom and in rear seat room), 8.1" ground clearance and can tow 1750lbs. But for those who live in cities and don't need extra cargo space or rear passenger room Prius might be fine.
Finally the Prius looks like a nice 4dr sedan. If we lived in Wenatchee we’d buy the new Prius, but 30 miles away towards Leavenworth, the Prius is simply too low in ground clearance, as we get 5-6 feet of snow every winter. So we’ll just keep driving our Subie’s.
I think Lexus should bring CT based on this Prius. Pretty sure there are tons of people who don't want Prius but Lexus and still have a great reliability and luxury
How about visibility? Previous Prii were pretty constricted in visibility, especially out back and in the blindspot. With the more rakish profile, this looks like it might be worse. It would be awesome if visibility was a standard in vehicle reviews. So many vehicles these days have high belt lines and narrow rear views. This constricts visibility especially for shorter people.
@@gschweiger Great points. I just felt the rear visibility was quite poor. In that sense a 360 degree view is a must as is a rear view digital mirror. The parking sensors would definitely help but a turn signal camera seems to be a must for this car especially with the compromised visibility imo.

It's interesting how people keep ragging on the 4th gen Prius for its looks. For me personally, it's the third gen that looks like 10 pounds of oats in a 5 pound bag. Luckily, I was able to purchase a 2022 Prius Prime LE (the trim level I desired) a few months ago for $31,124 (before down payment and other fees) since the average price for new vehicles is ridiculous. The 4th gen Prius Prime is one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned. I loved it so much that I completely forgot how others felt about it 😂 I have to get another Prius ASAP
Really cool car! Radio knob on the other side because car is sold in right hand drive markets. Toyota entertainment systems lack split screen. Not as up to date as segment is. It’s not clear why adding a rear electric motor will subtract mileage. Hard to see the dash behind the steering wheel. Didn’t expect Toyota to. Was something,Ike that up. Otherwise this good looking car is a home run. 👍
I had a 2021 rav4 hybrid for a year and 13k miles. It was an xse with the advanced tech package..so sticker was like 38k. I got 42-47mpg with it, and of course it was awd, roomier than this, and better ground clearance. I'd possibly be interested in one of these..but for the price.. I can't justify paying the same amount for this for a few mpg better. I had a 2023 rav4 xse on order, but it was taking too long haha. I sold the one I had because I was offered $5k over msrp for it, and I wanted something with more room and power. Other than that I really didn't have any complaints with it.
Not sure how you get 42-47mpg on Rav4 hybrid when it's rated for 40. You must drive ultra conservative and minimal highway! I have 2019 Rav4 hybrid XSE here in Alberta, Canada (paid $29,349 USD all in) and average 35 mpg in summer and 29 mpg in winter. I do have Wildpeak AT trail tires and drive fairly aggressive compares to most Canadians (average American I'd say). Highway trips to AZ and FL I drive 80 mph on cruise control and get 30 mpg on those lengthy highway trips.
Nice collaborative review. Is TSS 3.0 significantly better than the 2.0 or 2.5 especially in the lane centering function? How does it compare to the latest Subaru Eyesight?
Do all the trims with 19 inch wheels have 6 inches of ground clearance or only if AWD is added? And is the high voltage cable to the rear motor the same as in the RAV4? Worried about the whole cablegate problem but seems like that is different in the Corolla Cross Hyrbid.
That issue has been fixed already in 2022 Rav4 hybrids. All it needed was the plastic cover to have a tiny hole to drain water that collects in there. I replaced mine on my 2019 Rav4 hybrid.
Do we need to squeeze or wiggle the steering wheel every 10-15 seconds for the adaptive cruise control?... or is it capacitive, and just resting one finger on it is enough?
WOW.. A Prius that looks fast standing still. I REALLY like this design. I think the only complaint is a bit too much flat plastic leading up to the drivers display. Can we get some non moving vents on the display spars? Little hand warming action and it would have a more sporty look instead of blank space. Nice interior. I'd think about getting one if it kept is ability to sip the firewater but with the flip of a switch you get to surprise Tesla owners by staying right next to them with your foot on the floor. Prius Performance Sport... Take my money.
excellent video. Thank you. Though I'm incredulous that the lowest LE trim has a spare tire but the higher trims don't?? That's just bizarre. Plus the 19" rims make no sense. The car looks great, and overall Toyota nailed it but they slipped up on a few things.
Not to mention those 19s will ride extremely rough, damaged rims very easily, worse fuel economy and tires will wear quicker and cost more to replace. But hey some people will pay a fortune to feel cool I guess 😁
I liked the video until you went on about the clearance. You shouldn't call out clearance numbers if you don't know what you are referencing! Not sure where you're getting 6" from, but Toyota's press release stated the max clearance under NO LOAD is 5.1 to 5.6" depending on trim. 5.6" ground clearance on the Prius is the highest MAXIMUM clearance under NO LOAD while using max size tires! This usually means the measurement is lower under the suspension arms. 5.7" on the E450 is rated as MINIMUM clearance hight while UNDER LOAD! This means the measurement is taken from the lowest underbody part of the car(usually the suspension arms) while there is weight in the cabin to push the car down. This is a more advanced rating used to give more specific measurements during extreme testing. The Prius and E450 have two COMPLETELY different ratings! So to point out the Prius favorably against the E450 means you really don't understand what's going on. Just to compare, the E300 has a 3.8" minimum hight clearance under load, while normal clearance is 5.1". That's almost a 2" difference between the E350 sedan and E450 All-Terrain!
A hybrid with good power that can do a 6-7 second 0-60 and give you 45+ mpgs is the perfect driving machine. Reliability and fuel efficiency, sacrificing nothing.
Ugh no Ryan, it’s not a good deal. With the median income being somewhere around 50k, people are goobers for buying cars that expensive. I love the way this thing looks, but it really only makes sense in the baser trims…and if you aren’t planning on carrying people or stuff. Also can we please talk about how much cargo capacity this thing lost? Like yikes.
15:59 why so many people go right before making a u turn? Some idiots even cross the line and almost hit others... is it really hard to make a u turn in such a small car?
My 3-year-old Honda Clarity beats the new Prius in every category, from size/room (larger than Accord) to EV range (avg 45 miles per charge), except for one thing, I love the new Prius's hatchback which Clarity lacks. So I will definitely look into the new Prius when the time comes for a new car.
Wait a damn minute! I love the Clarity. I didn’t realize it wasn’t a hatch. I mean, it even looks like a hatch, for which it would have benefited from greatly. I have always considered it to be one of the best vehicles Honda has ever made, until that revelation 😔
@@User.Joshua that’s the only thing about my car that I didn’t like, but consider how much tax savings I got from both the fed and the state, I guess I can live with it. It’s a super nice car, I barely use any gas. Even at $7 a gallon last year, I was using approx $35 for every 950 to a 1000 miles.
It’s better looking, but best bang is still Elantra. Base is 25k and loaded limited is 29k. 56mpg and it has a dct vs cvt. Also you can drive 40-50mph in ev mode easily if careful with throttle.
I'd put the Kia Niro at $28.5 right up there with Elantra as a value proposition. Base Niro is also better equipped, has much better visibility, and utility.
"Spoiler alert, it doesn't suck! 🤓" When has the Prius ever "sucked"?? This new gen is a different direction to compete with what's now available, but Prius has always been a great car and always done exactly what it intended to do
The old AWD Prius only operated in AWD up to a limited speed, which limited the value of the AWD for driving mountain passes. Does this have the same limitations?
If it's like the Rav4 EAWD hybrid system the rear AWD only engages if it detects wheel sleep (like almost all other AWD systems). Of course this is done to maximize fuel efficiency and in highways AWD rarely needed as you're driving in straight lines. I have 2019 Rav4 hybrid XSE and drive tonnes or highway miles with my camper in Alberta, Canada (lots of mountains).
I was looking at the Hyundai Ioniq Blue (and the step up trims from that - but not the major Ioniq 5 or 6). How do you compare this car to the Ioniq? Some pages offer different stats here and there but it looks like the Prius AWD gets less MPH than the Ioniq. Toyotas warranty is almost HALF of the Ioniq (5 year for Ioniq, 3 for Toyota… 60,000 miles for Ioniq, 36,000 for Toyota. Ioniq has larger trunk space…. Why would I get this over last years Ioniq then?
Amazing view! I'm so jealous of you folks out in the PNW. My 4Runner came with those Bridgestone tires, they are truly terrible in any type of weather. Great on the highway though, I was able to knock down 22 MPG quite easily with my 4R. As much as I dislike the look of the Lexus, knowing what I know now, if you put a TRD Pro 4Runner, and this GX in front of me, I would choose the GX. Got a face only a mother could love, but what a fantastic color. The updated interior also looks nice, not nearly as much like the 4Runner as it used to.

Hey!!!!! It's my 2 fav. PNW power duo!!!! Love it!!!!
So, if you come from a Prius, this new Prius is a nice car. Got it.
how is steering? quiet cabin? can you compare it to 2023 Camry hybrid and 2023 Accord hybrid later?
Steering? Good. Cabin? Loud. Accord and Camry are both larger and quieter. Different class of cars.
excellent video.
Numbers are straight from the data we were provided at the time of production.
Were you hitting the accelerator at 22 min with drive with Tom? What was that ‘whaaa’ sound? Cvt?
I tried to buy a Prius, sadly it was NOT AVAILABLE. Had a option to wait 8 months,
But the only option to wait a month for the RAV4 Hybrid.
I hate to say this but new Prius is more interesting to me than the "new" Impreza.
I gotta say this is the only prius style I like other than the 2009 version.
Decent looking car 🤩 3rd gen looking good but 4th gen is looks bad , Now 5th gen is Cool looking again ❤🖤
Excited for the Prime version. To be able to drive to work and back home during the week on all electric would be great.
197hp awd is attractive. How about snow test?
How many inches from the rear trunk to the back of the passenger seat that is slid all the way to the front?
A hybrid with good power that can do a 6-7 second 0-60 and give you 45+ mpgs is the perfect driving machine. Reliability and fuel efficiency, sacrificing nothing.
The volume knob on the right side is probably meant for right hand drive markets and they didn't bother to change it.
They're right hand drive in Japan, yeah? Makes sense then.
Like yikes.
My two favorite reviewers?!? I was giddy like a school girl 😂🎉
15:59 why so many people go right before making a u turn? Some idiots even cross the line and almost hit others... is it really hard to make a u turn in such a small car?
They didn't even other to mirror the controls for the infotainment system. Its originally JDM. The USDM driver seat is left lol
Were you doing “spirited driving” or was that the transmission continuously hunting for the correct ratio going up different grades?
was the camera that was facing you out of focus? or just soft in the corner of the lens
Somehow a finger print found its way onto the glass. Didn't notice until after filming.
Is this the highest EPA rated mpg for an AWD vehicle ever sold in USA?
It’s better looking, but best bang is still Elantra. Base is 25k and loaded limited is 29k. 56mpg and it has a dct vs cvt. Also you can drive 40-50mph in ev mode easily if careful with throttle.
I'd put the Kia Niro at $28.5 right up there with Elantra as a value proposition. Base Niro is also better equipped, has much better visibility, and utility.
The bang will be when it blows up and the dealership forgets who you are
“B” mode stands for “Brake Mode”, not “battery”.
"Spoiler alert, it doesn't suck! 🤓" When has the Prius ever "sucked"?? This new gen is a different direction to compete with what's now available, but Prius has always been a great car and always done exactly what it intended to do
So is the AWD Hybrid the better version to go for?
In your opinion which car was more fun to test drive the AWD or FWD?
I rented the 2023 Prius it’s nice looks like a small Vette .
This Prius has Saab energy! I like it!
Saab is now owned by a Chinese company (forget which one though....)
196! Thats more than my gr86
The way things have been going with Toyota, will we see this vehicle for sale by 2024? Corolla Cross Hybrid has been very delayed.
Nice review
Watching from india
It’s really nice but I still hate info screens that come up above the dash.
The old AWD Prius only operated in AWD up to a limited speed, which limited the value of the AWD for driving mountain passes. Does this have the same limitations?
No. Rear motor now works at all speeds.
When you're taking it off road? ;)
I LOVE you videos, Ryan. Are you going to test the Prius off road🤪
If anyone would be crazy/cool enough to do so it would be Ryan!
how big is the trunk of the AWD version? Please m^3 thanks
Do you know when Toyota is going make this available to order? Possible release date?
Your dealer should have that info if they are really into selling cars...
Very good review.👍
Amazing view! I'm so jealous of you folks out in the PNW. My 4Runner came with those Bridgestone tires, they are truly terrible in any type of weather. Great on the highway though, I was able to knock down 22 MPG quite easily with my 4R. As much as I dislike the look of the Lexus, knowing what I know now, if you put a TRD Pro 4Runner, and this GX in front of me, I would choose the GX. Got a face only a mother could love, but what a fantastic color. The updated interior also looks nice, not nearly as much like the 4Runner as it used to.
EV mode is great in bumper to bumper traffic within Los Ángeles
Will Prime come with AWD option?
I think I read FWD only
@@TheTamrielDrunkard no way
It'll likely have same 49hp EAWD on the new hybrid. Same EAWD on Rav4 hybrids with exact same rear EAWD on Rav4 Prime models.
Problem is, Toyota doesn’t allow you to custom order anything, so you’ll likely never be able to get the exact setup you want
Ayyyyy it's Tom!
Great review. Looking forward to the Prime version. My 2017 Volt will need to be replaced soon.
WAY more attractive design! Finally...
Which one is better??? Crown 23 or Prius 23
