Amazing view! I'm so jealous of you folks out in the PNW. My 4Runner came with those Bridgestone tires, they are truly terrible in any type of weather. Great on the highway though, I was able to knock down 22 MPG quite easily with my 4R. As much as I dislike the look of the Lexus, knowing what I know now, if you put a TRD Pro 4Runner, and this GX in front of me, I would choose the GX. Got a face only a mother could love, but what a fantastic color. The updated interior also looks nice, not nearly as much like the 4Runner as it used to.
I agree completely, and it's not just potholes. There are so many imperfections in the road that are more intrusive mile after mile when you have these wheels. And for me efficiency is important, so I hate that I have to lose 9% of the MPG while paying more for a less comfortable ride.
I feel like comparing the price to the average car price in the US is a bit flawed. Because that's adding averages with luxury cars, fancy off-roaders, and performance cars. It would make much more sense to take the average of a new sedan/economy car prices so we can see what we're looking at price wise compared with cars in it's class.
TMW the new Prius (FWD OR AWD) has more power than the Impreza "RS" or any of the Forester and non-turbo Outbacks..... You paying attention yet Subaru of America??

Two great PNW based auto reviewers in one video? Cool! Thanks, guys! Never thought I'd become a Prius guy, but: 200-ish hp, awd, awesome mpg's, and cooled seats? Yup, think I'm gonna get one. (Gonna keep my FJ, too, though. ;)
I guess the AWD Prius would be good to have in snow, but how good?? I drove a 2008 RAV4 in deep snow and was impressed beyond words. I thought…”it must have a track underneath” like a snowmobile. If the Prius can do half as good I’d consider buying one.
@@ted6176clearance isn’t too important in snow unless you’re in the alaskan outback. good tired and awd makes all the difference. i’d honestly expect the prius to do nearly as well as your old car
I have a 2020 Limited Prime. This is my 3rd Prius. I like driving small cars. I really don’t mind the looks of it. It’s a Titanium Glow exterior/ black interior. I plug it in at night. The electric only is very peppy. I average 75 MPG. The car stickered for $34,800. The Northeast Region for Toyota had a $4500 rebate on it. Then I got a federal tax rebate for $4502, because it was a plug-in. So I got the car for $26K. It drives nice and smooth. I have a 6 speed Porsche if I need to drive fast. So I’m very happy with my 2020. I’m a car guy. I’ve owned every high end car made. I don’t really care for the shortened rear look of the 23…. I think for the money, Toyota is the best car to own… You guys did a good video, very informative…
"It's only level 2." So is the Tesla. No one sells something that's more than level 2. I guess you can go with the FSD demo if you don't mind running over children and lane dividers.
Do you know how much we’ve pounded that into the ground on this channel? You can buy a L3 from Honda in Japan and Mercedes is now testing. Tesla’s FSD is a lie.
But most people get Subies for other reasons. Lets compare those reasons with the Prius. But if I had the cash I would get this Prius. I'm an Outback owner by the way. If I had both these cars, I'd be very happy.
@@MM-yy9ib I dumped my Forester Touring as soon as I could. Thanks as always for an awesome review. I’ve had my Prius for 9 years and while it’s not perfect I’ve enjoyed it overall. This new new one corrects a lot of the imperfections and has me excited for a potential upgrade.
I'm really liking the exterior design of this new one, especially the rear quarter which reminds me of the Tesla Model 3. As a previous Prius owner, it's actually a decent car to drive, and not as slow as one would think. But I missed being able to go on dirt trailheads and wander off on the many forest roads here in the West. So after a year, got myself a Toyota FJ Cruiser.
I ordered the XLE AWD in march and I expected to wait for a year, then I call from the dealership that they had the same trim coming in on mid May this year and I can have it if I want it since she said I was first online. I said, of course I will! I got lucky here!
I'm really excited to see you do a winter test. My PNW driveway is steep and occasionally snowy. I'd like to know if this might be adequate, or should I wait for the inevitable Subaru hybrid sedans.
Even a mild E-AWD with decent winter tires sgouks should be fine in winter. I have a 2019 Rav4 hybrid here in Alberta, Canada and while the EAWD doesn't do much to improve performance its very good in winter (although like many AWD systems it's reactive not predictive).
@@James-il3tq I've got a really steep driveway. If it snows, zero chance of a 2wd getting up until I clear and salt. My Impreza has struggled a couple times. I worry a fwd biased AWD system, like a Rav4 wouldn't cut it. Spinning the front, and then power to the rear to try and bail out the fronts. Symmetrical AWD is just so good.
@@MOLRobocop There’s a video of some guy from Canada testing the AWDe in the previous model that only had 7HP in the rear electric motor, going up a steep icy driveway, stopping midway and the Prius climbed it without any problems. They of course outfitted the car with snow tires.
I liked the video until you went on about the clearance. You shouldn't call out clearance numbers if you don't know what you are referencing! This usually means the measurement is lower under the suspension arms. 5.7" on the E450 is rated as MINIMUM clearance hight while UNDER LOAD! This means the measurement is taken from the lowest underbody part of the car(usually the suspension arms) while there is weight in the cabin to push the car down. This is a more advanced rating used to give more specific measurements during extreme testing. The Prius and E450 have two COMPLETELY different ratings! So to point out the Prius favorably against the E450 means you really don't understand what's going on. Just to compare, the E300 has a 3.8" minimum hight clearance under load, while normal clearance is 5.1". That's almost a 2" difference between the E350 sedan and E450 All-Terrain!
Ugh no Ryan, it’s not a good deal. With the median income being somewhere around 50k, people are goobers for buying cars that expensive. Really cool car! Radio knob on the other side because car is sold in right hand drive markets. Toyota entertainment systems lack split screen. Not as up to date as segment is. It’s not clear why adding a rear electric motor will subtract mileage. Hard to see the dash behind the steering wheel. Didn’t expect Toyota to. Was something,Ike that up. Ryan, I’m so jealous that you’re in warm San Diego! Great review on the new Prius. It’s too bad that it doesn’t have the ground clearance like ours Subie’s. I like the looks, but they sacrificed air drag, headroom and cargo room in favor of style. Look at these humongous wheels. Well, maybe not so huge compared to Citroen 2CV proportions, still more style, less function. And I hate the front instrument panel position.
How about visibility? Previous Prii were pretty constricted in visibility, especially out back and in the blindspot. With the more rakish profile, this looks like it might be worse. It would be awesome if visibility was a standard in vehicle reviews. So many vehicles these days have high belt lines and narrow rear views. This constricts visibility especially for shorter people.
@@gschweiger Great points. I just felt the rear visibility was quite poor. In that sense a 360 degree view is a must as is a rear view digital mirror. The parking sensors would definitely help but a turn signal camera seems to be a must for this car especially with the compromised visibility imo.

15:59 why so many people go right before making a u turn? Some idiots even cross the line and almost hit others... is it really hard to make a u turn in such a small car?
A hybrid with good power that can do a 6-7 second 0-60 and give you 45+ mpgs is the perfect driving machine. Reliability and fuel efficiency, sacrificing nothing.
It's interesting how people keep ragging on the 4th gen Prius for its looks. For me personally, it's the third gen that looks like 10 pounds of oats in a 5 pound bag. Luckily, I was able to purchase a 2022 Prius Prime LE (the trim level I desired) a few months ago for $31,124 (before down payment and other fees) since the average price for new vehicles is ridiculous. Compared to the 2004 Sienna I upgraded from the reliability & fuel economy of a new car is appreciated.
The 4th gen Prius Prime is one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned. I loved it so much that I completely forgot how others felt about it 😂 I have to get another Prius ASAP
Do all the trims with 19 inch wheels have 6 inches of ground clearance or only if AWD is added? And is the high voltage cable to the rear motor the same as in the RAV4? Worried about the whole cablegate problem but seems like that is different in the Corolla Cross Hyrbid.
That issue has been fixed already in 2022 Rav4 hybrids. All it needed was the plastic cover to have a tiny hole to drain water that collects in there. I replaced mine on my 2019 Rav4 hybrid.
Personally I'd rather spend same money on a Rav4 hybrid. Much larger, 40mpg, more passenger room (especially headroom and in rear seat room), 8.1" ground clearance and can tow 1750lbs. But for those who live in cities and don't need extra cargo space or rear passenger room Prius might be fine.
Finally the Prius looks like a nice 4dr sedan. If we lived in Wenatchee we’d buy the new Prius, but 30 miles away towards Leavenworth, the Prius is simply too low in ground clearance, as we get 5-6 feet of snow every winter. So we’ll just keep driving our Subie’s.
Do we need to squeeze or wiggle the steering wheel every 10-15 seconds for the adaptive cruise control?... or is it capacitive, and just resting one finger on it is enough?
"Spoiler alert, it doesn't suck! 🤓" When has the Prius ever "sucked"?? This new gen is a different direction to compete with what's now available, but Prius has always been a great car and always done exactly what it intended to do
I grew up driving 60's and 70's Era vehicles. It never ceases to amaze me at how much drivers of new cars have turned into sissies. They whine about how much a display attracts fingerprints or if their little fingers are heated........you can't make this shit up, how did men turn into such sissys 😂
Not perfect but it makes a lot of sense, at least until charging infrastructures get better. Fact is that if everyone switched to electric vehicles the electric grids would fail so hybrids are a great stop gap until things get better.
WOW.. A Prius that looks fast standing still. I REALLY like this design. I think the only complaint is a bit too much flat plastic leading up to the drivers display. Can we get some non moving vents on the display spars? Little hand warming action and it would have a more sporty look instead of blank space. Nice interior. I'd think about getting one if it kept is ability to sip the firewater but with the flip of a switch you get to surprise Tesla owners by staying right next to them with your foot on the floor. Prius Performance Sport... Take my money.
No back window wiper or washer! No spare tire! Low profile tires! Noisy ICE! Manual passenger seat! One zone climate control! Bump your head getting in and out! Lots of compromises here.
excellent video. Thank you. Though I'm incredulous that the lowest LE trim has a spare tire but the higher trims don't?? That's just bizarre. Plus the 19" rims make no sense. The car looks great, and overall Toyota nailed it but they slipped up on a few things.
Not to mention those 19s will ride extremely rough, damaged rims very easily, worse fuel economy and tires will wear quicker and cost more to replace. But hey some people will pay a fortune to feel cool I guess 😁
I was looking at the Hyundai Ioniq Blue (and the step up trims from that - but not the major Ioniq 5 or 6). How do you compare this car to the Ioniq? Some pages offer different stats here and there but it looks like the Prius AWD gets less MPH than the Ioniq. Toyotas warranty is almost HALF of the Ioniq (5 year for Ioniq, 3 for Toyota… 60,000 miles for Ioniq, 36,000 for Toyota. Ioniq has larger trunk space…. Why would I get this over last years Ioniq then?
I had a 2021 rav4 hybrid for a year and 13k miles. It was an xse with the advanced tech package..so sticker was like 38k. I got 42-47mpg with it, and of course it was awd, roomier than this, and better ground clearance. I'd possibly be interested in one of these..but for the price.. I can't justify paying the same amount for this for a few mpg better. I had a 2023 rav4 xse on order, but it was taking too long haha. I sold the one I had because I was offered $5k over msrp for it, and I wanted something with more room and power. Other than that I really didn't have any complaints with it.
Not sure how you get 42-47mpg on Rav4 hybrid when it's rated for 40. You must drive ultra conservative and minimal highway! I have 2019 Rav4 hybrid XSE here in Alberta, Canada (paid $29,349 USD all in) and average 35 mpg in summer and 29 mpg in winter. I do have Wildpeak AT trail tires and drive fairly aggressive compares to most Canadians (average American I'd say). Highway trips to AZ and FL I drive 80 mph on cruise control and get 30 mpg on those lengthy highway trips.
Darn I was hoping this would be a sporty kind of model 2 hybrid alternative but it doesn't sound like they made it too sporty. Shame, real missed oppurtunity if they were going to make it awd anyways.
The most underrated feature these days is not hiding climate control behind the touchscreens.

holy shit man youre puttin down MILES
I loved it so much that I completely forgot how others felt about it 😂
I have to get another Prius ASAP
Last gen Prius was maybe the weirdest looking car since the Aztek. What a design turnaround! Wow.
Problem is, Toyota doesn’t allow you to custom order anything, so you’ll likely never be able to get the exact setup you want
When you're taking it off road? ;)
Lol, dealer said it's years before you'd get one off a wait list. Love Toyota, but f off they can't build enough. This is purposeful b.s.
Good car… If you are 5’6 150 lbs and less….
Huge upgrade in terms of looks from the former generations of Prius
Second best being the 2004-2009
For once i can see myself driving this as a daily. AWD a plus plus for me specially been up east.
The way things have been going with Toyota, will we see this vehicle for sale by 2024? Corolla Cross Hybrid has been very delayed.
$37,500 is not bad for the feature set, performance, AWD, and practicality you get.
197hp awd is attractive. How about snow test?
I’m Not liking the 1990 Boring Black and Gloomy Grey interior colors.
Tan, Red or perhaps a nice blue interior colors would Rock !
This new gen is a different direction to compete with what's now available, but Prius has always been a great car and always done exactly what it intended to do
Is this the highest EPA rated mpg for an AWD vehicle ever sold in USA?
I grew up driving 60's and 70's Era vehicles. It never ceases to amaze me at how much drivers of new cars have turned into sissies. They whine about how much a display attracts fingerprints or if their little fingers are heated........you can't make this shit up, how did men turn into such sissys 😂
I tried to buy a Prius, sadly it was NOT AVAILABLE. Had a option to wait 8 months,
But the only option to wait a month for the RAV4 Hybrid.
I want one at MSRP. Otherwise, it's a no for me.
I was excited when I got my 2010 and 2014 Priuses. I’m excited about my 2024 Prius. So there.
Omg it’s Tom Volk! What a legend!
Not perfect but it makes a lot of sense, at least until charging infrastructures get better. Fact is that if everyone switched to electric vehicles the electric grids would fail so hybrids are a great stop gap until things get better.
196! Thats more than my gr86
Take my money.
how is steering? quiet cabin? can you compare it to 2023 Camry hybrid and 2023 Accord hybrid later?
Steering? Good. Cabin? Loud. Accord and Camry are both larger and quieter. Different class of cars.
Less suck 🤣
But hey some people will pay a fortune to feel cool I guess 😁
too cramped & limited cargo
I gotta say this is the only prius style I like other than the 2009 version.
In your opinion which car was more fun to test drive the AWD or FWD?
I was looking at the Hyundai Ioniq Blue (and the step up trims from that - but not the major Ioniq 5 or 6). How do you compare this car to the Ioniq?
Some pages offer different stats here and there but it looks like the Prius AWD gets less MPH than the Ioniq. Toyotas warranty is almost HALF of the Ioniq (5 year for Ioniq, 3 for Toyota… 60,000 miles for Ioniq, 36,000 for Toyota. Ioniq has larger trunk space….
Why would I get this over last years Ioniq then?
I do love the new look of this prius. I still have 2009 prius and ct200
Highway trips to AZ and FL I drive 80 mph on cruise control and get 30 mpg on those lengthy highway trips.
why are you changing it so fast?
The headlights of the new 2023 Toyota Prius look...😳..🤮
They didn't even other to mirror the controls for the infotainment system. Its originally JDM. The USDM driver seat is left lol
weight 3300 pds like kerboingggg @_@!!! 2300 would been nice
My two favorite reviewers?!? I was giddy like a school girl 😂🎉
this looks better than a tesla. there I said it
Im a tesla fan and i would agree
Keep up the great work. And I love the Batmobile t-shirt!
So, if you come from a Prius, this new Prius is a nice car. Got it.
I rented the 2023 Prius it’s nice looks like a small Vette .
Tell us that the seats fold down, but don't show us that the seats fold down. ??
Hey!!!!! It's my 2 fav. PNW power duo!!!! Love it!!!!
Darn I was hoping this would be a sporty kind of model 2 hybrid alternative but it doesn't sound like they made it too sporty. Shame, real missed oppurtunity if they were going to make it awd anyways.
