Noah Lyles Surpasses Bolt's Speed

  • Despite a slow start, Lyles picked up speed and passed his competitors, almost catching Coleman at the finish line during the 2023 Bermuda Grand Prix men's 100-meter race. In the final 50 meters, Lyles covered the distance in just 4.05 seconds, which was faster than Usain Bolt's time of 4.11 seconds.
    This is absolutely amazing because no one could even get close to this time, let alone surpassing it, regardless of weather conditions.

    For all the people saying this was only possible because it was wind aided. Wind Assistance only gives accelerating force in the first few steps of the race, as it is the portion where the athlete's velocity is slower than the wind speed. In the upright portion of the race, a tailwind will have a much smaller increase in speed as the only benefit would be reduced air resistance. If an athlete can run with the same technique and force application in legal conditions, they will be able to produce similar results in the 2nd half (Tyson Gay PRs are a good example of this). That being said, Bolt's 100m record is probably not going to fall soon as no current sprinter has the combination of qualities to cover the initial 60 in under 6.3 seconds while maintaining their velocity without falling apart. The 200 on the other hand...

      Idk about that analysis. Tyson hit two .80s 10m splits in a row (50-60m, 60-70m) in his 9.68 (+4.1). Wind makes a huge difference post acceleration too

    • @razerstone8700
      @razerstone8700 Год назад +13

      That's not true unfortunately.
      The wind benefit is actually lower at the start of the race because the athletes are in a crouched position.
      While it is true that the wind velocity relative to the athlete is lower at higher running speeds and there is less force applied to the athletes body from a stationary perspective. The wind resistance (which is higher at high speeds) is also lower because the air is not coming towards the athlete as fast.
      Both effects cancel each other out and the wind benefit remains the same regardless of speed.

    “it only looked like lyles turned on the afterburners.” that has nothing to do with wind. yes, they all received the same +4.4 wind, but lyles finished quickly because that’s what he almost always does in every 100m race. also if you watch every coleman/lyles head to head race, lyles closes the same way he did here. it’s no different. therefore you can’t make the argument that he ran a faster last 50m especially since there was excessive wind assistance. lyles has to be able to close faster than 4.11 in LEGAL conditions.
    anyway, where did you find these splits for this race? i’m interested to see how fast everyone else covered the last 50m, in particular, coleman, because at least there are a few 100m splits for him (London 2019 and Doha 2019 10m splits)

      @@crap_bag_trust If we take a look at tyson gay's wind-aided 9.68 (+4.1), his splits were as follows:
      1.95 1.03 0.89 0.87 0.83 0.80 0.80 0.82 0.83 0.86
      Versus his legal 9.71 (+0.9) (I couldn't find his 9.69 so this is as close as we can get):
      1.89 1.03 0.91 0.87 0.86 0.83 0.81 0.82 0.84 0.85
      it seems like the second half of the race (or once they approach top speed) is affected by the wind, but not so much the start/acceleration. Even Bolt hasn't hit two 0.80 10m splits, he has 0.82 0.80 0.81 0.82 0.84 from his 9.58, and 0.82 0.80 0.81 0.83 0.84 from his 9.63, which had a strong legal tailwind of +1.5 (this 9.63 converts to roughly 9.70 with 0 wind), which is supported by the fact that Bolt's season's best at the time was like 9.76. Then again the argument in the video is that Noah Lyles ran the fastest last 50m, but I want to see official splits before we can say that for sure.
      Also, note that Gay's start was pretty good when he ran 9.71, he was marginally behind Bolt and Powell, who split 1.85, 2.89, and 1.87, 2.91, respectively, whereas Gay split 1.89, 2.92. When he ran 9.68 he was running against others like Walter Dix and Doc Patton, who don't start well, so even though he was winning from the first 10m of that race, it was only because everyone else in that race starts poorly, Gay just managed an average start.

    Considering this is the channel that opened my eyes and taught me to truly understand the science of sprinting, I'm immensely disappointed by this video.
    First, The title is an outright lie. Top-end speed isn't measured over large splits like 40m or 60m because speed can & often does vary greatly over such long distances. Top-end speed is measured over 10m splits or, if the technology allows for it, even shorter distances. As the distance covered in a split increases, all you can know for sure is what the runner's average speed was because they could have reached a speed of 20m/s but if they only maintained that speed for 5m and slowed down to 10m/s for the other 5m of a 10m split, then their average speed would've been 15m/s despite their actual top speed having been 20m/s.
    Second, Lyles had a massive tailwind that was more than double the allowable limit, disqualifying him from any contention for the highest legitimate top-end. As someone what in the comments said, if we're counting races with illegal tailwinds, then there are numerous races with faster top-end speeds, like Tyson Gay's 9.68 and Justin Gatlin's 9.4 (with giant fans at his back).
    Third and finally, saying that Su Bingtian 6.29 60m split shows us that the Bolt's record is breakable is beyond laughable when this channel BEAT INTO ME the lesson that runners pay for strong starts like that with a decreased ability to maintain speed at the end of a race because of the high energy expenditure. Well realistically speaking, no one is going from 20m/s to 10m/s within 10m, but yeah, top speed shouldn't be measured in 40m. Also the idea that runners pay for fast starts is a misconception. It's only when people are trying too hard off of the start (i.e. straining, gritting teeth, tense face, etc.) that they expend too much energy and have nothing left for the end. Bolt (when he started well like in his 9.68 9.69 and 9.72), Greene, and Powell (when he didn't choke) showed that you can hold your speed after a great acceleration if you were relaxed. In an interview Greene said tat "it's hard to accelerate efficiently because you have to run as fast as you can but be as relaxed as you can." Su is never relaxed off of the start, you can see both in the outdoor 100m and indoor 60m he's always gritting his teeth and straining his face so he wastes so much energy to where whether he splits 6.29 or 6.4 he's going to decelerate a lot because he has nothing left in the tank.

    • @brianong671
      @brianong671 Год назад +1

      As much as I love Bolt, I think 30 years is a bit of a stretch, especially for the 200m. Lyles has a decent chance at the world record, but he really needs to clean up his start/acceleration to do so. If we look at the splits for Bolt's 19.19 and Lyles 19.31, we have as follows: 9.92+9.27 and 10.15+9.16, respectively. Now, you can say that Bolt's last 100m was slower because of the -0.3 headwind, with Lyle's faster last 100m because of a +0.4 tailwind. Doing the conversion, that puts those last 100m at roughly 9.25 and 9.18, so I think it's safe to say that Lyles finishes faster than Bolt. Which again, isn't anything out of the ordinary because Johnson (9.20) and Blake (9.12) finish faster. So the issue isn't the final 100m, it's the first 100m that Lyles really needs a lot of work to be put in. However, if he does get the record it's going to be marginally faster, maybe 19.17 at best, not the "19.10" he's been saying he's going after. Knighton has a much better shot at the 200m considering the fact that he's faster than when Bolt was 18. Remember, Bolt ran 19.99 at 18 years (19.93 at 17), meanwhile, Knighton ran 19.49. With splits of 10.26+9.23, we now how to look at the wind reading which was +1.4, so that final 100m would convert to around 9.29, so that would make him slower than Bolt in the last 100m. While I think Lyles needs to improve the final 100m, Knighton needs to improve every part of the race. He can run a good bend, but he needs to start better and get physically faster (top-speed-wise). And then be able to hold it without getting run down like we saw when he went head-to-head with Lyles and got caught.
      As for the 100m, considering no one has gotten within 0.11 ever, and 0.18 recently (Coleman, Bromell, and Kerley went 9.76), that 100m will stand for probably another 15 years. (I hope I don't sound like a dick by typing a lot lmao, I just had a lot of stats to bring up)

    An athletes absolute max speed cannot be held for more than four seconds in the 100m according to science.
    So when and where in the race that top end speed is achieved is important and the rate of deceleration that follows. As seen in this race lyles still didn't win which means he was lagging in the first 50m compared to Coleman. I would like to see that comparison.
    The goal is to get to line first all this other stuff makes interesting discussion. So imagine if Bolt had the luxury of these "hurricane winds" what time would he have really run? 9.35 sec? Goes to show these guys are not as closes as many think.

      @brianong671 Год назад

      @@NYScott-mj6uo that is a bit of a stretch. If we look at the 9.69 he ran celebrating 20m before the finish line, his final 50m looked like this: 0.82 0.82 0.82 0.83 0.90. we can extrapolate the final 20m to be 0.82+0.82 at fastest or 0.83+0.84 at slowest. So at fastest, he could've ran 9.60, but more realistically 9.62. If you're talking about all the semi-finals, there are maybe 1-2 times where his start was perfect, but he's not going all out obviously because it's just a qualification and to save energy for the final.Other than that, I don't recall any races where he slowed down too much costing a world record

      @@TheWayToWin Check out PJ Vazel. He commented on Lyles' post of this split. He believes the mark to be 51m from the start line, not 50m. The split for Lyles is then only 49m, not 50. The women's hurdle markers should give both a 44.5 and a 53m split.

    • @TheWayToWin
      @TheWayToWin  Год назад

      @@alexhardy7711 Yes, I did think about it, but I based my calculations on the men's 6th hurdle, which is located at 49.42 meters. Although the marked line appears to be a little further away than 58 cm from the 6th hurdle, I made an adjustment and started the clock when Lyles appeared to be at 50 meters. When I spoke with Total Running Productions, I admitted a possible error of 0.02 seconds. Therefore, I am pretty sure that Lyles ran something between 4.05 and 4.07

      Fair enough. The split claim is just so darn impressive-almost a meter ahead of Bolt’s WR-that, even with the tailwind in mind, one wants to double-check (using other distances) as much as possible to account for potential errors. However, all conditions allowed, if any current sprinter is going to break Bolt’s final 50 time, it’s Lyles.
