- I bought an Ariens mower with a mostly broken spindle on the mower deck, and quickly broke it the rest of the way. Now it is time to remove the deck and get a new spindle (and pulley and keeper) in there.
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you making this video. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
This is beautiful. I have the same mower so now I have a good reference for making these type of repairs. Thank you for taking the time and consideration for the production.
Thank you for the kind words. They make it worthwhile. I also have other videos featuring this tractor (like: how to get it ready for winter storage). Hope you find them useful!
awesome, thank you--this allowed me to do a broken spindle on my moms 48" ariens.
Glad it helped!
I just got one like this. I’d appreciated if you can list more videos like this. Thank you for your time.
I have made several videos on this mower, but I no longer have it, so I won't be able to make new ones. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Shop vac break ???😊
Good to know parts are still available, I have a similar mower. I noticed that new spindle has a grease zerk on it. You should grease it at your earliest opportunity, as it may have only had assembly grease in it.
👍👍
I wondered about that when I first saw it, since the old one didn't have a grease fitting. I did some checking around and there seems to be some debate. One group says it is there, use it, and the other says the bearings are sealed so even if you fill it up with grease none will go into the bearings anyway. I decided to do a test and not grease. If they fail prematurely, I will be sure to post a video about it. Thanks!!
Awesome video sir. Thanks for the good info.
Glad it was helpful!
Solid video. The real time with the explanations, nicely done ✔
Glad you enjoyed it!
I would use a long nose needle pliers to remove those retaining pins! Vice grip to hold those turning nuts. Use PB blaster to loosen those frozen, rusted bolts. Does your belt make some sort of noise when you disengage the belt to the blades? You can weld those belt guides too! and smear some antiseize on the threads .
Good tips! Thanks for contributing. I unfortunately have neither the equipment nor the knowledge to weld. Hopefully someday, but not yet. The belt does not make an abnormal noise that I have noticed when disengaging the blades. Yes, antiseize would have been a REAL good idea. I missed that.
Nicely done. I need to change mines. Shop want 200 to do it.....I know someone sell8ng a Troybuilt for 300...I'm like if I spend 2 at the shop I might as well buy the new Troybuilt for 3🤔
I am glad you like the video! sounds like a good deal
To anyone watching this thinking they just need to replace the spindle, just buy a pulley while you're at it. Mine was also stripped and useless.
Nice Video , now I can drop my deck & find out why its mowing more from side than the other.
Thank U.
Glad to help!
@@TheFixitShed didn't drop the Deck, jacked up the front , replaced the blades & level well the Deck for a better cut.
Thnk U again..!
Yes, there is more than one way. Congrats on your success!
Thank you for the video, my lawn tractor spindle/pulley broken today. Now i can repair it. What the tool you used to removed the frozen screws,(old). is name impact wrenches.

hello please help right behind ur broken spindle is a small spring that attaches to some type of brake...my spring (one end is broken)..CAN U PLEASE tell me where this spring goes at both ends? thanks
Unfortunately, I no longer have this mower to reference. Try going to the Ariens website parts page and look up your mower by model number. check the parts diagram for the mower deck, and it might give you an idea where the spring connects.
Can you advise on how to get the front anti scalp wheels on, where to order them? I bought a kit for the back 2 wheels but haven’t seen ones for the front
I generally go to the Ariens website and find the part numbers for what I need, and then go to eBay or just do a Google search to see if I can find the parts cheaper than the Ariens site.
Thank you for posting the video, saved me from making a boo boo.
Glad I could help
thanks ? why not use anti seize on your bolts?
Would have been a really good idea.
Did your spindle have threads for the bolts? Mine only had threads for one of the four, but I just drilled the bolts into the three smooth cylinders anyway. It worked. Hope that's what I was supposed to do.
Sounds like poor quality control. They should have had threads.
I see there are two hooks near the engine pulley that the belt rests on. While changing the oil on my 10-year old mower recently, one of those hooks just fell right off! Is there any way it can be easily reattached? I've not looked under the mower yet, but the ends of the hook don't appear like they screw into anything...
My hooks bolt to the outside of the frame. If it just fell off, something probably broke. Both sides bolt on in the same way, so you can reference the other side to see what it should look like.
Thank you for the video.
You're welcome! I am glad you found it helpful.
Do the blades need to be oriented in such a way so that they don't hit each other during operation?
No. It is a non-interference setup.
It seems funny the one part of the repair that seem to give him the most problems is the one part that was not shown in detail
Which part was that?
Hi, i have the same 42 inch deck mower in Estonia. But here is impossible to find corrwct blade belt. Maybe you can help me to know the exact lenght of the belt? Thanks! Cheers!
The deck belt for my mower is 1/2" x 101"OD. Ariens part number 21547025
Hello I just watched your video. I enjoyed it. Thank you for the tutorial. I have a question. Well. My riding mower does work it cuts and everything. Only ot doesn't seem to want to go backwards as well anymore. Sometimes it will just fine but sometimes it doesn't unless I give it a scoot backwards while I'm sitting on it then it will but bits at a time and verrrrrry slowly. Have any idea what the problem.could be. Oh and I check the motor oil and it is fine. Hope you have an idea thanks.
Tough to know exactly what's going on from here. If it is a hydrostatic transmission, I would suspect that the trans is having issues. If it is a manual, maybe you get lucky and it is a belt problem. Sorry, not much help or good news.
@@TheFixitShed thank you ots like the one you have on the video. But how would I know ifa.its a hydrostatic or manuel?
@@idasandoval6796 It may say "Hydrostatic" or "Automatic" on it somewhere, and you just control haw fast you go with a pedal or lever. If it is a manual, it will have a gear selection lever (1, 2, 3, 4, 5...). Not to be confused with the mower deck height adjustment lever (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5...)
@@TheFixitShed ohhh ok thank you then its a hydrostatic. She will go backwards but most times I have to give her a scoot with butt lol while I'm sitting on it. So do you think it could be just the belt? Cause when I first had her get maintenance I noticed it was brought back.to me.with a different used belt it wasn't the new one she came with. And I didn't realize so.much till after I used it and was cleaning her off.
No. If it was a manual, it might be a belt issue. With a hydro, I suspect the transmission is having issues. But again, hard to tell from here.
What the torque on the blades on a 40 deck Ariens 1540H
I have no idea
Great video, but I have to wonder why you didn't bother to sharpen (or replace) your blades while you had them off. They're all beat to hell.
It probably would not have been a bad idea. It wasn't the focus of this video. I was using the mower mostly to mow a field that had rocks and sticks and stuff. I did include blade sharpening in my end-of-season video.
@@TheFixitShed - then that makes perfect sense. I would have done the same.
By chance do you know the belt model # .... I have to replace mine
21547025 it is 1/2" x 101"
Random question, but do you grease the gearbox?
This has a hydrostatic trans, so there isn't a gear box, and the hydrostatic is "maintenance free"
I need some wheels to level off my deck. I can’t seem to find the part numbers. Any suggestions?
Well, if you have the same mower deck that I work on in this video, the Ariens Part Number is 21546267.
What mower belt is that? Mine just broke
Mine is Width: 1/2" Length: 101 1/4" Ariens part number 21547025. Please be sure yours is the same
Where can I find a used grass chute for my mower like that?
I would check eBay, or call local mower repair places around you to see if they have used parts, or know of a local place that does.
I can’t find the part numbers for any of the parts even on there site please help
The model number of my mower is 960460061-02. If your mower is a different model the parts may be different. The pully for my mower is part# 21546446, the mandrel (spindle) assembly is part# 21549012 and the keeper is part# 21547367. Make sure you get the right parts for your mower deck.
What's the name of the belt that is above the deck belt and goes from the front to back and where can I buy it
That would be the drive belt. I would go to the manufacturer's website and look up the part. Then take the part# or the specifications, and search other websites (like ebay or discountonlineparts) to see if you can find a better price.
@@TheFixitShed Thank you ! I found one on Amazon the only problem is I have a 17.5 horse power airens riding mower but the engine has been changed to a 12.5 horse power Briggs and Stratton will that affect anything?
@@justajoke9977 Hard to tell at that point. If the drive shaft is in the same position (which I would think it would be) and they kept the original diameter pulley, I would think it would fit. If you have the old belt, try to measure it.
Can you provide the seller and link to the parts you purchased? I have the same mower
Generally I go to the the manufacturer's website, (in this case: www.Ariens.com), then I find the part number I need and then I check Ebay to see if I can get it cheaper than the manufacturer's website. I believe all the parts I purchased for this mower deck were purchased on Ebay.
I can’t thank you enough for this video. I got the part off eBay and followed everything you did. I got to fix it and cut my grass today. 🙂
Your reply made my day! So glad the video was helpful and it all worked out for you!
Isalute the pulley number of that tractor .engine 17.5Ariens
I am not sure what the question is, but if you go to the Ariens website, you can put in the tractor model number and find the part numbers you need.
I know I am 4 years late, but that's the worst spindle I've ever seen removed from a mower deck. Someone has been giving that mower a h*ll of a hard time!! You should've just gone ahead and put a new set of blades on that deck too, since you were going to all that effort and expense. Those blades were SHOT, and probably OUT of BALANCE as well.
Previous owner had a kid that mowed a field with it. It wasn't treated well. I was actually going to change the other spindle and blades, but the decompression valve broke. I didn't have time to dig into it, so I moved on.
Next time install the blade to the spindle assembly BEFORE installing the spindle to the deck.
Why?
@@TheFixitShed Chuck it all up in the vise, get it right, then only 4 cap screws and you're done. No holding the blade to get that big nut tight.
Like most products these days, the engineers do a good job then the accountants turn it into a piece of S##t !
