Brother without your videos I may have cost myself some money. I was almost whipped messing with this mower today. Good ole Dennis Coffey on RUclips saved the day
I've watched several of your husqvarna service videos. Really clear and easy to follow. Thank you, it's just the information I need to start servicing my mower myself.
ALL THESE YEARS I HAVE HAD OUR YTH4218 DIDN'T KNOW THIS. NOW I KNOW HOW TO DO THIS. I'VE TAKEN MY MOWER TO A SHOP IN THE NEAR BY TOWN BUT SINCE THE OWNER PASSED AWAY THE SON TOOK OVER AND NOTICED THAT HE WAS HAVE ASSING IT ON OTHER EQUIPMENT. SINCE THEN ME DOING OIL FILTER, LUBE, TUNEUP, AND WILL NEED TO PUT NEW SPINDLES ON AND,PULLIES, . WILL HAVE MY NEIGHBOR DO ALL THE WORK, CAUSE I CANT KNEEL DOWN, ME WAS IN A MAJOR CAR ACCIDENT IN DECEMBER AFTER CHRISTMAS COMING HOME FROM WALMART. WILL BE ON MEDICAL DISABILITY IN A BIT. SO THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW THAT.
I have owned this exact garden tractor for almost 4 years now. I had no previous experience with any tractors before buying this one. Previous to finding your videos, I have had my local repair shop do all my service needs, but now with your videos I think I am ready to try some of this on my own and save some money...as well as give myself more self confidence around my machines. Thank you and keep the videos coming!
Brett, I am in EXACTLY the SAME situation as you. I've never done any of this before either. Just got done doing a full tune up after watching all these videos, and am now going to finally level my deck. (which it has needed for a long time!) It sure is easy after watching these instruction videos.
@@dwcoffey So, I work at a Western Auto store. Blast from the past, I know. We've been in business for going on 83 years, now, and ours might literally be the last WA in existence. Anyway, we sell Husqvarna mowers, and deck leveling is the latest of the various random jobs I've been tasked with over the years. I've got NO experience with this. I'm not even handy worth a damn, at all... so this video has been a godsend. Just wanted to say thanks man!
Hi Mr Coffey great video. The Pastor of the church right next door to my house always asks me to fix things for them and just the other day I replaced the Spindles on their riding mower and he asked me to level the deck since one side cuts higher then the other, I told him it was the adjustment nut on the one side and now your video confirmed it for him. Thanks. :)
Great videos! This is my first garden tractor mower and was not looking forward to taking the mower in for maintenance stuff. All of your videos helped me remove the deck and sharpen my blades and adjust the deck to where it needs to be!! Thanks and keep the videos coming!
You do such a great job on your videos! Thank you for taking the time to share you knowledge in a step by step process that can be repeated by most people.
Thank you, Sir, I have not had a problem until today. After watching your video, I was able to resume cutting after my belt came off. I just dropped the deck and reconnected the belt!
Okay, Dennis, I had to follow up with you. I've had my Husqvarna rider for 12 years and have never leveled my deck. The last few years I've been scalping my lawn and wondered what the heck is going on. I thought, "Maybe it's my deck?" So I searched RUclips and your video came up. I watched your video, took notes, and went for it. My deck was soooo out of whack in the front and back and my scalp-preventing wheels were set on the top hole, so I lowered both to the bottom (we have lots of dips and valleys too). WOW. I did my 1st mow here in Ferndale, WA (where it's like a rain forest) and I was amazed at the difference. Thank you so much, Dennis, for taking the time to make this video. You literally saved me hours of time raking because my deck was cutting way too low...even on the highest setting!
Thank you so much Dennis for all your instruction videos. This is my first riding lawnmower. (Husqvarna YTH 24V48) I've never really done anything of this before so it's unfamiliar territory. HOWEVER, after watching most of your videos I find that's it's relativity easy, & something that I'm more than capable of doing myself, & in the process save a whole lot of money too.
You are so right about measuring to the blade. I was getting frustrated by the ordeal until I eyed a long 3/4" wood dowel in my basement. I cut the dowel to about 2 1/2". I place the cutting blade per instructions in the manual and set the dowel against the blade and mark it with a pencil. I then put either a "R" or "L" for the Side I mark. I use pencil so that I can erase the line when readjusting. Thanks for your video, enjoyed it.
Omg! I learned so much in this one video! Thanks for teaching a 60 something old lady a thing or to she can do in her own. Well mostly im stubborn, so theres that. Please keep in detail the videos and im now a follower!
Thanks Dennis. You just helped me to get the Husky to cut more even. Yes, these mowers only have about three height settings possible to cut at.......MAYBE 4 if I messed with the wheels. I've had my Husky 12 or 13 years and the cutting height issue is something that has bothered me. It's only a problem if you let your lawn go to long in the spring and it gets too tall. You can't cut high and lower it for a second pass. I just learned to get with it in the spring and don't let it go to long! LOL!!
While I'm at it, let me tell you that I straightened out my bent deck my using washers under the deck when replacing a mandrill...it worked and I got the blades lined up after many attempts made easy using my new impact driver. An impact driver makes working on these machines a whole lot easier.
Thanks again, Dennis. I still am not sure that changing the drive belt will fix the tractor but now I know where it is and how to change it. Thank you!😀
Thank you for this video series! I really appreciate your use of English versus Metric measurements, as that allows me to reach for a tool, and not go back to my pc and try to do the needful and make adjustments. I grew up in Texas, and Metric measurements were akin to Communism, so, it took a lot of time to be able to deal with how the rest of the world functions. God bless you and thank you for your work.
Mr. Coffey your video is very helpful. It is my reference video whenever I need to level my YTA22V46 Husqvarna mower deck. About two hours ago I finished Leveling my Husqvarna MD. Mr. Coffey thanks
I liked how you explained why you should or should not do a certain task and the "if you do this, this will be the results" factor. Digging the Fu-Manchu mustache too! Us "Gray Beards" gotta stick together.
Hey Dennis, nice, precise, well-explained video. I just picked up a YTH18K46 with only 260 hours on the Kawasaki engine. It looks almost new, you can tell it was properly maintained. However... I did find the dreaded grass clumps underneath the engine/tank area that keeps the drive belt from being fully engaged. Cleaned all that debris out of there and thought hey, might as well do the deck. I jotted down some notes from this video and heading out to work her over. Thanks again for a very good video.
Hey Dennis! It’s that time again, took the deck off my exact unit, came to look how I can avoid trouble putting it back on again. Great work on this video, one of the best so far! Please share with me, one more time, on your go-to supplier for parts? I still need a gas tank gasket, and a carb rebuild kit. I promise to not lose it this time, and I’ll tell them you sent me! Just found your videos have been having trobles with cutting dirt on one side no bent blades or shafts this vid will help a great deal knowing how to adjust the deck
Thank you for making this video. My tractor has been cutting unevenly. I will try to level the deck to see if this works. My scalp wheels are definitely to high. Thanks again.
Thanks for a really nice video! A suggestion: At 7:37 when you are tightening the locknut with your 11/16 wrench, you should hold the adjustment nut with the 3/4 wrench so it doesn't move out of adjustment. This is why they are different sizes, so you don't need two wrenches of the same size.
My new Husqvarna ts242, the back tires were 30 psi, but should be 10 and the front tires take 30 psi..helped somewhat, next is leveling the deck..thanks for your video.
Sir, How are you Good evening greetings from Mexico Welcome to you with your videos, very good content. God bless you and thank you for taking your time to explain us, thank you very much.
Great videos. You saved me a bunch of time this year by your video on the flat free front tires. I got mine from Amazon. Took longer finding my tools than it did the actual replacement. Anyway, unless I missed it how about a video on an easy quick way to disable the engine kill switch. I know its a safety feature but it adds a lot of wear and tear on the starter. Thanks,
Thanks for watching! Yea, I love those never-flats! On my tractor, if I set the parking brake and disengage the blades, I can get out of the seat and the tractor will stay running. Give that a try, it may work on your model also.
I have found that using a scrap piece of 2x4 (4”-5” in length) is an easy way to confirm the floor to cutting edge height. I place the deck on the 3 1/2” height setting, then slide the 2x4 block underneath the deck to see where it meets the cutting edge. Since the actual width of the 2x4 is 3 1/2”, you simply adjust the deck until the cutting edge meets the top of the 2x4 block.
Thank you Dennis. I’ve got the same tractor and this is something I’ve been meaning to do. You are very good at explaining things so now I know the proper procedure for leveling the deck. 👍
On my Husqvarna yth24v48 my deck has an adjustment linkage on both sides. I take it that I would have to adjust both sides to raise the deck. Also do I also need to adjust the front adjustment?
Nice, I like having an adjustment on both sides. I would set the height with the rear adjustments and then set the front to be slightly lower than the rear (about 1/4" to 1/2" lower).
Great video, I have the same mower, and have watched just about every video you have made. I was going to ask you how I could raise the height of cut, but you answered my question at the end of your video. Maybe another of your viewers has a solution. There does not seem to be enough room to put bigger tires on. I just inflate my tires to double what it calls for.🤷🏻♂️
Rick, Easiest would be to add a spacer block to where the transmission bolts to the frame. You would verify how much you can go to not put too much of an angle on the drive belt. 1/2 or 1" square tubing from the hardware store for the rear and larger tires on the front.
Thanks for watching, Rick! Yes, I've said I was going to figure out how to modify the deck linkage to raise it a bit, but haven't had a chance to do it yet.
I have also found that cutting a block of wood to the height I want my grass and setting it under the blades works fairly quickly for and accurate adjustment.
Awesome way you put that fixing a deck rite now on husquarvarna loss my washers trying to figure it out lol.. good job keep making good content.. I’ll be starting my channel soon John,s DIY superstars you were one of my motivators so be on the lookout for a tag and motivational thank you. Rock out and keep making good content brother..
I like 2" blade height. I have plastic caps from spray paint cans that are exactly 2" high, I slip them under the blade tips on the ends side to side, then a little less in the front blade tips turned to the front, and a little more with blade tips turned to the rear. Yep, getting a tape under there is a hassle. Look around, plastic caps are in all sizes, or you could cut some pvc or something.
This was a great help to me, first time using this tractor. Can you help with one question though, how high should the blade shroud be when it is completely locked in its highest point ?
Not that I know of. That seems to be the most common complaint about this mower, the deck is too low and can't be made to cut high enough. Thanks for watching, Bill!
Great video!!! Can you tell me or show how to clean the headlights housing. It gets dusty in there. Can I just spray water or is there a way to remove them??? Thanks
I have removed the bulbs and sprayed mine out. It hasn't hurt them, but it also hasn't cleaned them very well (better but not clean). I need to take them out, clean them well, then figure out a way to seal them so they stay clean. Thanks for watching, Daniel.
Thank you for the info. Really enjoy all your video. They have been very helpful. Should you level your mower every time you mow or just a few times during the mowing season? I watched your videos and they really helped me out , thanks again .
Thanks for watching, Daniel! I only check mine when I change the blades or when I see that I'm not cutting level (like if I notice may first pass across the lawn isn't quite level). Normally it wont get out of level unless you hit something, etc.
Came here because I thought my front-to-back height was off. Turns out it was pretty much dead-nuts accurate. Whew! Still gotta replace spindles and blades though. 😅
I have a YTK46. I first started to adjust my Deck from rear to your recommended height. I made cut two guides 2" x 3" for (left and right) rear and two 2" x 2 1/2" for front. Problem I encountered is Rear Right height. It will not equally Level as adjusted with Left. Rear Right is lower and I can't figure why it will not. What am looking at is to cut and monitor how it would show.
Thank you for watching, Jesus! It sounds like the left rear is still too high and should be let down enough to match the height of the right rear. These Husqvarnas have very low deck heights (one of their chief complaints).
i would think you could remove both nuts and add alot washers and lift the deck as much as you want. or does arm length become an issue. just bought my hus. last week and already want to raise the height.
Dennis, you state in the video that you can't raise the mower deck higher than 3 1/2 which I found to be true with my new Husky mower. But while making the left side adjustment, it looks like there is a lower mounting hole on the orange mounting bracket that you can reattach the 'black' rear steel arm that should give another 1-2 inch clearance. What do you think?
Dennis, A suggestion: as Husqvarna does not make a service manual available, a collection of suggested torque settings would be a good help for many, Off the top of my head I can only remember 45 to 55 foot pounds for the blades.
Thanks for watching, David! You should be able to download a free owners manual and repair parts manual from Husqvarna's web site. I have not seen a service manual though. You are correct about the torque, the blade bolts should be torqued to 45-55 ft lbs.
Thank you for watching! No, I didn't really specify the height because it isn't really adjustable and it may vary a bit from one tractor to another. The only real adjustment on these mowers is the leveling adjustment. The height is only affected by the cut height control. I hope I explained that well enough.
For the cutting height there isn't much that says you can't use the deck level and rake adjusters to get a bit more height. Run them as far as they'll go in the up direction then bring them down until it's level and raked a bit. I doubt the belt system will have issues accommodating the 1/2-1 inch higher deck.
Thanks for watching! Yes, if you can find larger OD tires that fit, technically, you will increase the cutting height by half the OD difference. So if the tires are 1" larger in diameter, you'll pick up a 1/2" in cutting height.
The adjusting nut on the lift arm has somehow gotten stuck above the threads and just spins and thus I can't move mower deck either up or down. Any suggestions on how to correct this problem?
Thank you for watching, Dean. If you can't get that nut to thread back down on the threaded portion of the rod, maybe you can take the threaded end loose and put on another nut. Either leave the loose nut on there, or cut it off?
Great video but I have a question as I just bought a mower like this. You can adjust one side of the deck but is there a way to raise the entire deck? I need about 2 more inches of clearance to easily get in and out of my shed.
Thanks for watching, Ryan! That seems to be one of the most common complaints about this mower. I have not found a way to raise the deck above the highest factory setting.
I dont understand why you have to level the deck since I have a Craftsman 48 inch 22 HP once I put my cutting height at about 2 1/2 inches ( #5 setting on mine ) and my deck has 4 anti scalp wheels that are fixed and cant be adjusted ( 2 wheels in the front and two on the back of the deck ) however all 4 of those anti scalp wheels are on the ground while cutting, if my deck is higher in back or front what difference does it make while up in the air ( #10 setting ) . since all 4 anti scalp wheels are touching the ground and leveling out the deck while I'm cutting grass? Am I missing something? Thanks in advance. Great video by the way.
Thanks for watching, Tom! Since your anti-scalp wheels ride on the ground all the time, you probably do not need to level your deck at all. Most mowers have the anti-scalp wheels set to only touch the ground on high spots, so you want the deck level while cutting flat areas.
I have an issue the right side of the deck is lower than the left side how do I adjust that is it possible? The left mini wheel hit a fence post and since then I’ve noticed the difference with my deck ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thank you for watching, Billy! You probably need to straighten out the anti-scalping wheel mount if it is bent. On most mowers, you can take it off with a 3//4" wrench and socket. Then you can straighten the mount for the wheel. Once that is straight, check your mower deck height again. If that didn't fix it, and If your mower only has one height adjustment like the Husqvarna's, then it will depend on which side your adjustment is on. If it is on the left, then somebody has possibly moved it too far up, beyond the travel range of the right side. If it is on the right, then somebody has possibly moved it too far down, beyond the range of the left side. If none of this is the case, when the anti-scalping wheel hit the fence post, something with the deck mounting hardware or brackets may have gotten bent and is causing the deck to be out of level.
@@dwcoffey yes because I ordered the same exact adjuster for the right side and replaced the rod I still can’t get it leveled I believe it’s 1” difference and the rolling wheel isn’t spinning freely like the right side I see it bent a tad
Thanks for watching!! It really depends on your grass type and typical weather in your area. If you are in the US, look to your local county extension agent or office for ideal grass height based on your lawn. I'd start there and adjust slightly according to what works best for you.
All your videos are Great, just one question ? To check your deck measurements do you check your deck at the highest position or at the level at which you always cut your lawn? Your info is awesome. Thanks db
My comment refers to Mandrel Covers. I have a YTH22V42 came without Mandrel covers. Question will any other YTH22V 44 thru 48 covers fit. Husqvarna will not confirm. YTH22V42 purchased 2009.thank you
Thanks for watching, Don! It's hard to say since Husqvarna didn't include covers on the YTH22V42 deck spindles. The size of the spindles and pulleys are very similar to the YTH22V46, so you could probably drill a few holes and make those covers work.
I would assume since the blade spindles don't extend past the mower body on the 42, there wasn't any reason to have this safety feature on that size mower. Besides, who wants to continually remove them to clean under the covers.
Hey Dennis, The trick to making the deck higher is to remove both rear hanging rods, cut an inch out of each and weld back together. I honestly hate my 42" Husqvarna because it cuts so short. A healthy lawn should be about 4" in my opinion. I have a 46" Ariens and it lifts high enough and have never hit or damaged the blades. My 42" Husqvarna, well, I've replaced about 5 mandrills, double that many blades and I can hardly mow without a mishap.Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I have not cut the adjustment rods but am thinking seriously about doing it. Will it work if I do? What say you?
Greatly appreciated your video. Very helpful. I have a YTH24V48LS Fabricated deck. Hope the steps you showed are same for my Fabricated deck. Thanks. Stay safe. Stay well.
Hi, thanks for this forum. My challenge is the right side of the deck is much closer to the rear wheel than the left side. So how can I straighten out what appears to be a rotated or twisted deck? PS It cuts straight.
Thanks for watching, Rick! Not sure how to tell you a way to straighten your deck. Once a stamped part (like these decks) is bent out of shape, it is difficult to get them back to their original shape, especially depending on how far and how badly they a re bent.

Thank you for making this video. My tractor has been cutting unevenly. I will try to level the deck to see if this works. My scalp wheels are definitely to high. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching, Mario!
Thanks, been using your videos for all of my general maintenance
That's great, Travis! I'm glad the vids are helpful. Thank you very much for watching!
REALLY GREAT and informative videos. You are appreciated! It is reassuring I am doing everything I should be doing and doing it correctly.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the support and the kind comment!
Thank you for watching, Rich!
Great Instructions. My tires were not inflated properly. It made it hard to level the deck. After proper inflation, it was a 10 min task to level it.
That's great! Thanks for watching, Les!
Appreciate your effort on this video. Well done
Thanks for watching!
My new Husqvarna ts242, the back tires were 30 psi, but should be 10 and the front tires take 30 psi..helped somewhat, next is leveling the deck..thanks for your video.
Thanks for watching, Jody!
Great content delivered with a smile! Top notch Dennis!
Thank you so much, John! As always, I appreciate you watching!
Sir, How are you Good evening greetings from Mexico Welcome to you with your videos, very good content. God bless you and thank you for taking your time to explain us, thank you very much.
Thank yo so much, Luis! I appreciate you watching!
Thanks for the information on leveling my deck. I have an JD240. And this method works.
Thanks
Thank you for watching, David!
Thanks a lot Dennis it was a good video I was needing that this morning to fix my Husqvarna! Good video!
Thanks for watching, Kyle!
Awesome, will try it Thanks
Thanks for all the videos. I´m having break problems with my Husqvarna at the moment. Is there a video on this?
Thank you for watching! I'm sorry, but I don't have a video on the brakes.
@@dwcoffey Maybe in the future. 👍🏻
Thank you for watching, Jim!
Thank you Dennis. I’ve got the same tractor and this is something I’ve been meaning to do. You are very good at explaining things so now I know the proper procedure for leveling the deck. 👍
Thanks very much for watching, Mike!
I agree it doesn't mow high enough for my thick fescue.
Great video Bravo.
Thanks for watching, Buck!
Very helpful! Thanks. I agree that Husqvarnas don’t cut high enough
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your detailed instructions. They will save me $.
Thank you for watching, Cathy!
Another great video thank you for your time and knowledge god bless keep it going...stay well...
Thank you so much Danny!! Same to you my friend...stay blessed and healthy!
Great job on the video. Very helpful for a rider mower newbie like me!
Thank you for watching, Jim!!
Great video. You show where to adjust including what wrench to use.
Thanks for watching, Fredrick!
Thanks Dennis, brilliant and clear instruction, cheers
Thank you for watching, Andrew!
Thanks Dennis, I appreciate the information! I will put this in my toolbox.
Thank you John! I appreciate you watching!
@@dwcoffey how many hours does your tractor have?
Very helpful video Dennis..thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching, Robert!
I have also found that cutting a block of wood to the height I want my grass and setting it under the blades works fairly quickly for and accurate adjustment.
Great idea! Thanks for watching, Brad!
Thanks for watching, John! I hope the new channel goes well, and I'll be on the lookout for it!
Great idea! Thanks for watching!
Thank you! I didn't know about the front end adjustment.
Thanks for watching, Britt!
Thanks, Dennis. Another good video.
Thank you for watching, as always!
An excellent video! Thanks a lot! This video was too the point and accurate. It helped me very quickly. Keep making the good videos.
Thank you Gregory! I appreciate you watching!
This was a great help to me, first time using this tractor. Can you help with one question though, how high should the blade shroud be when it is completely locked in its highest point ?
Thanks for watching, Fred! I think the highest setting on these blades is 3.5"
Thank You for the video! Is there any way to raise the entire deck about an inch?
Not that I know of. That seems to be the most common complaint about this mower, the deck is too low and can't be made to cut high enough. Thanks for watching, Bill!
Great video!!! Can you tell me or show how to clean the headlights housing. It gets dusty in there. Can I just spray water or is there a way to remove them??? Thanks
I have removed the bulbs and sprayed mine out. It hasn't hurt them, but it also hasn't cleaned them very well (better but not clean). I need to take them out, clean them well, then figure out a way to seal them so they stay clean. Thanks for watching, Daniel.
good instructions, worked for me .
I too do not like going under the mower to measure👍
Thanks for watching, Gordon!
Awesome video. Straight to the point
Thank you for watching, Dee!
Came here because I thought my front-to-back height was off. Turns out it was pretty much dead-nuts accurate. Whew! Still gotta replace spindles and blades though. 😅
Thanks for watching!
Sir thank you for your video it helps me with my mower!!!
Thanks for watching, Daniel!
Thanks for watching! I have not been successful figuring out a way to modify the linkage for more cutting height.
Thanks for watching, Glen! It sounds like its worth a try for sure!
Great how-to video!
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
Thanks Dennis, good stuff. Did I miss what height you were adjusting your to vs. the pull bar? Just curious
That's right....you can't pick up much height, but as low as Husqvarna put these decks, every little bit helps! Thanks for watching!
Can you get an extra 1/2 inch cutting height by changing to larger diameter tires? Mine cuts too low.
Great vif! Im blind and was able to follow along
That's great to hear and I'm glad this was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the heads up to adjust my mowers deck
Thanks for watching!
Add gravel to the front of the shed? Unless youve got concrete there I guess. Then build a ramp
Thank you for directions that are easy to follow and understand. The owners manual stinks.
I'm glad this helped! Thanks for watching!
Thanks great video! So is 2 3/4" the desired height?
Thanks for watching!! It really depends on your grass type and typical weather in your area. If you are in the US, look to your local county extension agent or office for ideal grass height based on your lawn. I'd start there and adjust slightly according to what works best for you.
All your videos are Great, just one question ? To check your deck measurements do you check your deck at the highest position or at the level at which you always cut your lawn? Your info is awesome. Thanks db
Thanks for watching, Daniel! You can measure it at any setting, just be sure to use the same height setting to measure each side.
Thank you great step by step adjustment
Thank you for watching, Anthony!
Besides, who wants to continually remove them to clean under the covers.
great video especially like the key moments time!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for watching! I don't see any reason that won't work. If you shorten all 4, the deck will be higher and you'll still have height adjustment.
nice job thx clear and mellow explanation
Thanks for watching, Sam!
Greatly appreciated your video.
Very helpful.
I have a YTH24V48LS Fabricated deck. Hope the steps you showed are same for my Fabricated deck.
Thanks. Stay safe. Stay well.
Thanks for watching! I'd like to have a fabricated deck. I'm sure it is better than the stamped one.
Thank you ! Great information 🎉
Thank you for watching, I'm glad it helped, Michael!
