What a dam shame. I had never heard of this guy before, I think I must live in a different world! Lil Peep, my heart hurts hearing this sad, sad story. I can relate to his pain, from very young I was having accidents, going to the hospital and somehow different from my peers. Breaking things, loosing them, always covered in paint, even when it wasn’t art. “What’s Caroline done now” we’re words I’d hear so often. “Caroline must try harder”, I was always doing my best. At nine my parents were called into school because I was always covered in bruises, they thought I was being abused at home instead I nearly got tested for dysphasia. By the time 13 arrived I hated myself so much I wanted to be dead. Then I found drugs and alcohol thinking with them too came the solution to my deep-self hatred. Instead though I hadn’t take a cross off from around my neck, one of mental health problems, I had actually draped another equally heavy weight to carry, that of addiction. It is people like Lil Peep who I am dedicating the rest of my life to helping, to make amends for the huge, unknown quantity of damage I have done during my 25 years in addiction. To make a difference at that critical time in young people’s lives who have mental health problems and are at the same crossroads that me and Lil Peep were at, where we both went the wrong way, convinced at the time we were going the right way, that drugs and alcohol were the answers to our pain. Rest in Peace Lil Peep 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈.
I'm 37 have dealt w mental illness and addiction my whole life for me it's very personal (the music) because in every song I would hear things and say oh this dude is my people he's speaking my language....rest in peace peep 💘
This all sounds very familiar. For 22 years I ran a group home for men dealing with Substance Use Disorder and other serious mental illness. I also lived there. In nearly all cases they started using drugs or alcohol because they gave immediate relief from their mental illness. The problem, as you point out, was that the substance use made their other mental health symptoms worse rather than better over the long haul.
Good idea to remember people in every walk of life are dealing with issues like this. Always heartbreaking when anyone loses *themselves* to drugs, then, ultimately, their lives. RIP Lil Peep, and the numerous others who lost their lives to drug addiction and/or mental issues. They often go hand in hand. Thank you, Dr. Grande, for shedding more light on this most serious subject. 😔
A lot of people with mental health problems self medicate with drugs/alcohol, which does not just add another problem but makes it impossible to treat the first one effectively. It's even worse w/young people, since both the drugs themselves and the fact of being intoxicated so much of the time & learning to "solve" life's problems w/drugs affects their still developing brains negatively

I really connected with Lil peeps music just after he passed away. I had experienced PTSD symptoms due to emotional trauma. I don't quite know what it was that connected me with his music, I think it was the atmosphere that it created. His music felt like a warm blanket that could stop the shivers, even if it was just for a while. I thought the lyrics excessively spoke about drug use and it helped me understand how drugs only made things worse (although in the short term they may appear to help). I was never a drug user myself. except a couple of beers here and there. I think the lyrics could have been anything and I would have enjoyed it. Over a year later, I still feel the quivering in my heart to a slight degree that my PTSD symptoms were real, but that they are almost gone. The position I am now is far far away from the position I was in when I was enjoying Lil Peeps music, I don't enjoy his music like I once did. His music helped me feel validated during a rough time, while I still appreciate it for what it did for me; I have moved onto different music. I've more or less moved away from rap and am back to things like My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Slowdive and other popular 80-90's groups. Appreciate the video, Dr Grande.

I especially like your comment at the end about artists who perhaps intend for their work to have a direct message and not a meaning on another plane. That’s really important to consider and pay closer attention to.
No way! PURE awesomeness Dr.Grande, I love your channel and choice of people you choose to analyze while incorporating mental health topics. Keep up the great work.

These were really some profound thoughts shared here. The thing is...people still do what makes them feel good; even when they are aware that it's an unhealthy coping mechanism & the escape is temporary. So many legendary artists have lost their lives due to associations of drug use & it always baffles me how the people around them react following their demise. Always appreciate your insightful thoughts doc! One can only hope they're considered.
Dr. Grade you sure did make a complete analysis with what you had to work with about the mental health and personality factors that may or may not have been at work in the death of Gustav Ahr followed by comments about what professionals working in any human service role can learn from the case in order to help make their services student, client and patient centered. I hope all of us can prevent another generation from being labelled something like the lost generation like that generation who grew up during world war 1.
So, on the face tattoo and employment: Suppose the employer is trying to assess whether a potential hire is conscientious. Shouldn't they try to assess that in some other way than merely observing the face tattoo?
Your openness will be your blessing--Get a good doctor, get help with the addiction too. Your life doesn't have to mimic Peep's. Please don't let it; i bet you are a sensitive soul. You deserve a good life--work toward that

I just watched the documentary on him. It was so sad. He literally did get the face tattoo because he never wanted a regular job. I guess Im the only one who watched the doc.
So happy to stumble across Dr. G, subscribed and bingeing, loving the quick, dry wit commentary. This is probably the most somber one I've seen, as some of them, I've really bust a gut, laughter, but, this is, a very sad subject, and thus deserves the compassionate effect it's given.
Gonna go listen to some lil peep after this. I would have never listened to him if it weren't for my little cousin. Super surprisingly i liked his music. Great vid Doc as always, thx for this one. Gonna share it with my little cousin I'm sure he will like it and my hope is he subscribes to you after watching 👍✌ Just wanted to add his music reminds me of my teenage yrs so I guess I not too surprised at the fact I enjoyed some of it. My little cousin had alot of similarities to peep also. The music, the drugs. He has stopped with the xanax all together and now only does marijuana. So many kids of my cousins generation share alot of similarities with peep, I think we should definitely be on the offensive with this. Just my opinion, because I thought my generation was messed up but they seem to be surpassing us in many ways. All negative. Saddens me to think of how these kids don't seem to be getting much in the way of education on positive things. I see spoiled, excuse making, no responsibility taking kids that honestly seem to be learning it all from their parents. Idk really that's just my perception on the subject. Light handed opinion honestly.
Very intelligent comment. Good luck to your cousin and peers. I agree, offense is needed. It's difficult, but necessary. Once a person gets addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, it's a lifelong struggle. 💔
I have a friend who intensely adored him. He died the day before her 21st birthday which was understandably devastating for her on top of how sad his death was to begin with.

Like other popular music he might not like it (and i'd actually say: get it) aaat all. I feel like i'd end up upset. So let's not. Love Dr. Grande, love NIN, Trent is a genious and a picturebook narcissist, let's move on 🤣
Well, on the other hand he has an incredibly interesting relationship with substance abuse disorder (specifically cocaine) and his story of overcoming that addiction through his music is actually kind of the opposite of what we see with Lil Peep.
Great video as usual. You should consider doing a video on Tom Hagen. He is a Norwegian multi-millionaire who is accused of murdering his wife. He narrated a fake kidnapping by sending himself letters demanding millions of dollars in cryptocurrency but the police saw through that since there were found divorce papers from the wife and femicide is although not that uncommon.
Thank you so much, Dr. Todd! I think it will be extremely helpful if you could do a video on Emo culture - just as you described in this video, but with more detail (e.g., they often need help but don't ask for it explicitly). Because I think many of us have younger siblings/family members who tend to follow the culture/adopt similar habits, and it would be great if we can understand how to help them.

He either commited suicide or he was super tarded to think this would end well. Like holy crap thats a drug cocktail.

Omgosh!! Thank you!! I knew you would ❤️ I'm 56 and I love Peep. This just made my day, Dr. Grande. 🤗
good on you!
Åhr in Swedish is pronounced as 'Ohr'. But that wouldn't save the problem either...
Yes it's "are" or "or" sound people might get mixed up. Good to know Åhr is pronounced like that. My son was asking me why did Avicii die the other day, and I wasn't sure what to say to him.
Not quite. Å isn't pronounced like an English O.
@@Chris-wj4ze Imagine the "a" in the english word "all", and then you are as close as you can come to the Swedish Å...
The pronunciation of Åhr is similar to “oar” (as in a boat oar) or “ore” (as in iron ore).
As we say in swedish: "å i åa ä e ö", meaning: "and in the creek there is an island"
My 18 yr. old son loved him. Great analogy about the teacher/student. So true.
Dr. Grande is my favorite ytuber after Norbert the dog.
This was such a sad one. 😔
I’d never heard of him until I saw a video of his friend finding him dead on their tour bus. So I started to listen and was impressed. His music wasn’t phenomenal, but his lyrics were really amazing-like pretty poems. I feel sorry for him that he had so much just about to happen, but died because of some stupid stuff.
Drug addiction is a deadly cycle so many people get stuck in. Sad.

I'm 37 have dealt w mental illness and addiction my whole life for me it's very personal (the music) because in every song I would hear things and say oh this dude is my people he's speaking my language....rest in peace peep 💘
he deserved a lot better.. just another young soul reaching out to a dying light for help
„Bother me, tell me awfull things, you know I like it when you do that helps me get through this without you”. Rip LiL Peep
Do one about Tupac. He seemed pretty paranoid about being betrayed and murdered (but... With some reason)
You're not paranoid if somebody IS out to get you.
His parents were Black Panthers so he saw some stuff as the kids say
He’s still alive
Seems it wasn't paranoia
so was JFK apparently towards the end he predicted the methods of murder for both himself and his brother
Never thought this video would be made. My excitement is immeasurable. Thank you!
I just found this channel a few days ago and have been addicted. Dude covers EVERYONE!
It's so sweet you talk about people like this. I'm sure many find these helpful. Thank you for you work.
Thank you Dr. Grande. This has to be my favorite analysis to date. As a Peep fan I was very sad to discover his music due to his young death.
Very insightful. I love how you handled this and spoke of this young man.
This particular analysis was warm, and, I believe, coming from a family of addictive and depressed people, dead on. Thank you.
Great comment. Celebrities are not the only ones dealing with this. Thanks for that reminder. ❤

Damn Dr Grande!!! You are so prolific🙂. Your analysis at the end was really sad.
Breaks my heart, Gus deserved such a long life. I miss watching him and his music evolve.
I'm a 60 year old gay white man from the suburbs, and just discovered Peep. He could have easily been as big as Kurt Cobain had he not been taken from us. I listen to his music all day while at work, and never tire of it. He was a genius. RIP Gus, you'll live in all our hearts through your music.

Gonna share it with my little cousin I'm sure he will like it and my hope is he subscribes to you after watching 👍✌
Just wanted to add his music reminds me of my teenage yrs so I guess I not too surprised at the fact I enjoyed some of it.
