Heath Ledger was a year older than me and went to school 10 mins down the road from my school. We weren't friends or anything, but I knew him a little - he was a really nice guy, even after he became famous. No matter how hard I try to see Heath in his portrayal of the joker, I just can't, even when they show the joker without makeup I still don't recognize him. The man was a one of a kind and transcended his art to heights that even a full 80 years of life can rarely achieve. I'm always reminded of that saying "A star that shines twice as bright lives half as long".
Same, I used my work to hide from reality. For me, it resulted in a complete mental breakdown, which ruined work as an escape, forcing me to check in somewhere to get help. Much better now.

" like a dog chasing cars, and wouldn't know what to do even if he catches them" this line in the movie sums it all up. The analysis of Heath ledger matches the analysis of the joker video you made. It's almost like he achieved fame just to show that it's nothing.
Thank you for covering Heath Ledger. I remember the day he died. I don't have any special interest in celebrities, but there was always something about him that made me feel something. Almost as if you could his vulnerability. He was bursting with talent and energy and even through the movie screen, appeared special.
His sister said he seemed to be having the time of his life playing Joker and loved the role. Opiates + benzos most likely means he just stopped breathing.
If he took them regularly then his tolerance would be something to keep in mind. The amount of each in his system is relevant to his tolerance, which is very important to remember. I do wonder if he was adding more meds to sleep and maybe one of those didn’t mix well.
I think Dr. Grande is absolutely correct in concluding that Heath Ledger's modest drug use was meant to control his energy level. I did the same thing for a few years due to insomnia and feelings of chronic fatigue. I feel fatigued whenever I live alone, but having others living with me helps to set my internal clock so that I get more regular sleep.
I found him to be a very interesting actor, very sad he died so tragically. So many artistic and creative people suffer....unable to accept success.....thanks for another great study! ❤️💯
The line about him not expecting to live to an old age reminds me that John Candy had a similar attitude about his life. A profile of Candy would be very interesting I think, he was such a talented actor that made a lot of people laugh, but apparently he felt very insecure about anyone liking him. There's a great story by Roger Ebert about this in his Planes, Trains & Automobiles review: "One night a few years after "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" was released, I came upon John Candy (1950-1994) sitting all by himself in a hotel bar in New York, smoking and drinking, and we talked for a while. We were going to be on the same TV show the next day. He was depressed. People loved him, but he didn't seem to know that, or it wasn't enough. He was a sweet guy and nobody had a word to say against him, but he was down on himself. All he wanted to do was make people laugh, but sometimes he tried too hard, and he hated himself for doing that in some of his movies."
Chet Ripley! Yes, Candy was a good comic character. But just that, and I think they said that was the issue. Too many failures outside of being just a hilarious buffoon. His weight and consumption habits probably had a big input in his ending. Anything even approaching serious acting from him, or just being the lead in a role was terrible, impossible to watch.
@@lynncrf Drank and smoked heavily, was on constant diets and re-gaining, and may have used other substances as well. A highly sensitive soul who sometimes found reality harsh, if not unbearable, so transformed it into humour, not unlike Robin Williams. So he left us with this enormous gift, while he himself was not able to be saved by it.
He was a a brilliant actor with immense talent. It was almost as if he expressed his alter ego through many of his roles as they were a contradiction to the essence of who he was. Brokeback Mountain was a groundbreaking movie in many ways. The two characters had breathtaking chemistry and the way in which the film explored feelings of love, loneliness, yearning, separation and passion etc. was evocative and achingly beautiful. I was drawn into their complex sexual and romantic relationship that seemed to exist on a soul level. Although the context was a homosexual relationship, it transcended that on many levels. I'm reminded of a quote when I reflect on this movie: "Our souls already know each other, don't they?" he whispered. "It's our bodies that are new." (author?) As always, thank you Dr Grande for your thought-provoking analysis on this amazing actor!
I would still argue that the role of the joker and the way he went into that affected him. I've seen pages of his note/scrapbook he made during that to prepare and get into the mindset, the content would affect anyone. On top of that the substance use, the breakup and depressive thoughts, well. A shame. He was great and too young. I was also in Australia when he died. Nationwide tragedy.
Think while that was a heavy role, still think it makes the most sense, that it stemmed from his separation from his daughter/wife, due* to the divorce 😥
Dr. Grande - check out the death penalty case of Robert Fratta from Houston, Texas. Very interesting character with plenty of mental health aspects mentioned before, during, and after his trial. I’m sure all of us would love to hear your thoughts on it.
I appreciate your objectivity and even-handed delivery of phycological perspectives. Also noticed your dry, sharp wit in other videos which is enjoyed. Thanks for posting 👍
A incredibly talented actor who tragically passed so young. Its always best to contact one of the Olson twins seeking medical advice instead of calling 911. Great content Dr Grande ❤
So excited for this one Dr. Grande! I followed this since I was 18 all those years ago and just starting psychology. I’d watched so many of his movies and was excited to see where he was going.
Spot on. He was massively talented and decent. Totally understand insomnia and racing thoughts. Miss his acting and am so sorry for his family and Michelle and his daughter.
He was one of the best. Millions were heartbroken when he died. So very tragic. “The Four Feathers” was one of my favorite. Everything you said about his personality brings it all home and helps us understand all of the factors combined can cause a personal to spiral out of control.
Out of any celebrity early death, Heath ledger was the most devastating for me. He seemed like such a selfless, exceptionally talented, and loving person. As a young man, he is someone I look up to as a role model, even after his death, in that sense his spirit lives on.
Dr. G, another excellent summary of a person's life and untimely death. I remember him from several movies I really liked when growing up. And, I know I heard of his death, but I kind of forgot until now. It was interesting to hear about his personality traits that seemed to oppose one another and I can relate to it. Are you familiar with the Jung Personality types - I am sure you are - just hearing about how you described Heath, it reminds me of an INFJ. I could be totally wrong, but that's what it reminds me of. It sounds like he had a lot of things going for him and really struggled with sleep issues and possible anxiety or whatever the racing thoughts were. I would imagine it would be very difficult to be in such an industry if you are a kind, sensitive soul. Sad to hear of his accidental death but appreciate your analysis, as usual. Thank you!
I think jusdging by the Big Five model it may seem like he was an INFJ, but if we go by mbti or cognitive functions, he is an INFP. Also, one thing I've come to understand in terms of personality psychology is that P/J in the mbti system does not seem correlate that much with the industriousness (hard-working, or productivity) aspect of the big five but rather with the orderliness facet. In mbti, it is not necessary the case that Ps are lazier or less productive or hard working than Js, although they are much more likely to be so (that's where correlation comes in).
Very interesting, as always. I find that the more I learn and understand from your videos, the more tolerant it makes me of my own personality quirks and those of others. So many of us struggle..,... I had never realised what good company I’m in. Off topic, I have just discovered ‘Liar’ by the Rollins Band - a narcissist’s anthem par excellence. I would not have understood the lyrics a couple of years ago. Thank you for your fascinating work.
I clicked on this so quick when I saw the subject of the video! Brokeback Mountain is one of my favourite films, ever! Heath Ledger was absolutely fantastic. His final scene in the film caused me to ball my eyes out! Without him doing too much, the sentiment of that particular scene was so moving. As a method actor, I don't know how he prepared himself for that role, but whatever he did...it was very effective and convincing. You could tell that he put himself entirely into his work. When he passed away, I was truly saddened because there was a very young, talented life snuffed out at a high point in his career, with so much more life to experience. Thank you for this analysis, Dr. Grande.
He was brilliant in a little movie called _Monster's Ball."_ It was a really wounding flick though. He played an unloved, depressed correctional officer. It was a hard watch. I never considered that the call was put through to the Olsen woman because he'd done it before. Thank you for the gentle analysis Dr. Grande. 🌹👍
Some people forget that celebrities are people and they are cruel when they discuss issues like this. One of the reasons I follow Dr. Grande is that he shows compassion.
Watched this all the way from Heath's hometown - Perth, Australia. Heaths death was such an unexpected shock Thank you for the analysis Dr Grande - you are working tirelessly to provide really interesting content. 😃👍🙏
I didn't know he had artistic integrity so early on in his career. We definitely got a glimpse into greatness so in that sense he achieved his hopes and dreams

I'm back in school working toward a Master's in Counseling Psychology. I find the way you interpret personality through OCEAN helps me grasp the nuances of the scale. Thank you for that.
Dr Grande these days I keep evaluating people base on the OCEAN acronym, my internal voice is pretty much yours these days 😅 Thanks for the great work!
Man Dr. Grande is impressive. I just saw the comment that people wanted him to review Heath Ledger and he listened and has made a video. I am so grateful for Dr. Grande
Do you know what I hate hearing the most? "You seem fine to me" (usually said in a judgemental tone with a doubtful facial expression). Sometimes people just don't want to see your pain.
You'll do or take just about any and everything trying to get some sleep. It's tough for most people to function without decent sleep. I feel for anyone who's going through this.
Dr Grande- could you please consider doing a video on the Motivational speaker and ex navy seal/marine David Goggins. I understand that you may be besieged with requests on the psyche of unique or interesting individuals, however I think a slot dedicated to a man with such an indomitable spirit would perhaps gather a rather large audience given the global respect he commands for his super human ability to master mind over matter. Thank you for your wonderful videos! Keep up the great work.
I did NOT know all those facts about HL. He had so much promise. It is too bad that he felt his sleep solution lay in numerous substances; substances always distort one's true self, and, as in this case, they can truly work against us. Thank you, Dr. Grande, for the always-classy summary and analysis! Your list of incongruences is awesome, too!
He was so compelling in Candy 🍭 - a brilliant portrayal and a very fine actor taken long before his time. Such a huge tragedy and loss to us all. Thanx for the analysis Dr Grande. Cheers 🍻
Great analysis, thank You! He was an outstanding actor, it was obvious that he lived all those characters while playing them. I loved him, I always had some weird sense of him being a good and kind soul. Maybe he really wasn't made for Hollywood-style "Per aspera ad astra", although he did climb quickly. The costs were too high.
He was a complex man who possessed a great talent. He deserved the posthumous Oscar for his role as the Joker. His star died just as it was nearing his peak. So sad. Great analysis, Dr. Grande!
Haven't even watched this yet, but know, it is going to enlighten, and break my heart simultaneously 😭 Heath, and Chris (Cornell), were two of the more recent, tragic losses... In my opinion...
I really loved this. I found myself thinking a lot about Joaquin Phoenix who played the next joker after seeing ther film. I think he and Ledger were friends? But anyway, what struck me was the fact that they both played the role of the joker in a much darker portrayal than in previous films. Method acting seems dangerous to me. If they were friends I wonder if that sadness impacted on the role played by Phoenix. I think his joker was additionally, so very sad. There was also another of their band of friends that died young but I think that was drug abuse. Not sure though they were all friends. Phoenix, his brother? And Ledger? And Johnny Depp? I might be imagining that. Anyway, another excellent study. Thank you
Would be interested in seeing a video on Ethan Couch - the “affluenza teen” who killed four people while driving under the influence. His attorneys argued that he did not know the consequences of his actions due to growing up wealthy with parents who didn’t discipline him. Only time he served was two years for a probation violation years later.
Not sleeping makes you panic. Especially when you have to be up for work in the morning. I can't even imagine having to play a part. Dr. Grandre, you are brilliant for not jumping to the racing thoughts being bi polar. At the time of Heath's death I had psychophysiological insomnia. When you are desperate for sleep you will try anything. :(
I really do wonder if he had undiagnosed ADHD, because of racing thoughts and insomnia, use of multiple substances, plus it's often comorbid with (or even misdiagnosed as) major depressive disorder. Unless you experience ADHD, you don't realize how devastating it can be. Not all ADHDers are hyperactive, it really takes a thorough clinical questionnaire and coversations to tease it out.
I really miss Hearh Ledger. I was 24 years old when he died. I remember how A Knights Tale changed my life in high school when my life was in turmoil and I was thinking long and hard about committing suicide. But I didn't because Heath Ledger influenced me to always fight to change the stars. Just like he did in A Knights Tale. When he left us in 2008, I spent the rest of the whole year secretly crying and secretly depressed he was gone. I never cried so hard over someone I never actually met. A year ago, my best friend from childhood....who took me to see A Knights Tale and was the only person who cared about me when I was contemplating suicide in high school..... was killed by a drunk driver while living in Florida. Now both Heath and my childhood best friend are gone. But I keep fighting to change the stars, for myself and for others, because I know that's what they both would have wanted me to do.🌠🌌✨ Karen, tell Heath Ledger I still really miss him. I miss both of you and love you both very much. I'll come Home to both of you someday. Now go be guardian angels to someone else who needs you, and I will join you in the stars when I come Home. 👼👼👼
Please do a video on Elliott Smith! He was such a underrated singer for the great musician he was. Sadly he struggled with lots of mental health problems. Enjoying your content, keeping up everyday.
Another very interesting video. In a number of these videos Dr. Grande has mentioned the difference between persona and personality. I would like to suggest that this would make a good video topic. In these videos one gets the impression that this is a characteristic of performers, but many professions like medicine and teaching almost require a professional persona. The persona code can be as restrictive as the dress code. Some colleagues who failed to abide by these requirements lost their jobs. I imagine that maintaining such a public persona could lead to problems as could failing to do so.
I know you already did a video on Michael Jackson but I would love to hear your thoughts regarding his childhood and how that affected him. The way he was almost stuck in a childlike state, like he wanted to hold on to his childhood. Breaks my heart.
This video is great. Thank you as always, Dr. Grande. Heath was a treasure, we’re lucky we had him for as long as we did. Quick side note: not a conspiracy theory, there is evidence/confessions from witnesses showing that Marilyn Monroe did not commit accidental, or “probable” suicide, as her autopsy allegedly showed (since you mentioned her here). The coroner, Dr. Naguchi, wanted to have a second look at the evidence after his initial statement, but then the evidence went missing. It’s a sad story but not suicide. A lot of strange stuff was reported that night, but couldn’t be proven until years later. There’s a movie called Marylin Monroe Declassified that was recently added on YT, check it out if you’re into her (Dr. Grande did a nice piece on her, as well!)
Just his role alone, portraying the JOKER was some of the best acting I've ever seen in my life! I'm 51 years old now and an avid movie guy, and there's really nothing that can touch how the man went about playing that part!! Such talent gone too soon,. Fuckin drugs 😠😠😠grrrrrrr. Pisses me off. R.i.P Heath!!!
I loved Heath Ledger - he had something so special. I used to suffer from racing thoughts when trying to sleep until somebody told me to just let them float by like clouds...never had the problem since. The problem I found was as I latched onto one thought I would catapult from one to the next. If you just observe it as is passes through your head. You soon drop off to sleep. Just like watching clouds...
I would like to point out, he was essentially working ,' midnight shift" when working on the Dark Knight. It's hard adjustment to make, you feel tired but wired when awake, it's hard to sleep during the day,ore noise, and even in a dark room the light comes in, and your body is made to be awake during the day and sleep at night. This may have caused some depression. Or aggravated depression. It's a tough shift. There may be more to it, but it's something to be considered. It took me over a year to adjust to midnight s.
I agree, I got sick after a year of it. I just couldn't keep going like that. We are meant to sleep at night except when hormones get involved. The Doctor said it was normal for Teenagers and the Elderly to stay up late into the night and then sleeping until lunchtime.
Did you know him , how did u know he was working in night or afternoon shifts , actually my old job caused my mental illness now depression and psychosis you never live just to work only
Ira Einhorn's personalities traits would make a fascinating video.🤔 Excellent video, much of this information, I did not know about Heath ledger's life, very interesting and sad.😑
Hi Dr Grande. I find it interesting that the coroner concluded every drug was at a therapeutic level. Ok, however mixing opiates and benzodiazepines in such a large variety isn't theraputic. It sounds like a recipe for unintended consequences. How tragic. I suffer from Full Body Restless Leg Syndrome. The only way I am able to sleep is to combine an opiate with a benzodiazepine. However the array of meds he was on was over the top. What a bummer. Can't a person just be able to get a good night's sleep? Chronic Insomnia is torture. He sounds like a complex guy.
@@kavitadeva I've used it for years! Also helps you fall asleep and stay asleep! Yet doesn't make you fuzzy or dopey feeling upon waking like a sleeping pill does!! I definitely think Natalie's drowning was a drunken accident due to her mixing alcohol and sleeping pills (or sedatives). There may have been a domestic dispute going on, but I don't think anyone assaulted her.
I wonder about that Olsen twin involvement (???). and no investigation after his body was removed, other than the autopsy. Where did he get the opioids, and how could he even function on that many different drugs?
Check out Sloan Bella for the truth about what happened. Natalie left him because she caught him with the help. He would have lost his career if the truth came out. I did alot of research on this one.
I get the vibe that Ledger was (what some call) a "chronic rebel." He felt like he was being controlled, so he rebelled against any form of authority. The problem is that after a while, you run out of things to rebel against, and you become more self-destructive. Amy Winehouse and River Phoenix probably had this problem.
My heart just completely goes out to him. I've struggled with sleep issues my entire life and wouldn't wish not being able to sleep on my worst enemy. I also am a recovering addict, my primary addiction being opioids and although my sleep issues were not the only reason that I used, they absolutely played a big factor. That is a crazy list of drugs found in his system, esp mixing so many different types of opioids & benzos. Such a sad end for such an enormously talented young actor, but at least we have his work to remember him by.
I think this analysis of Heath Ledger was very well done, especially the empathetic way Dr. Grande approached his assessment, as Ledger was & still is, a very beloved figure to many people (myself included - It’s incredibly sad to think that, had he lived, he would only be 41 years old!)
Interesting assessment. I also add he was likely perfectionist, and ppl pleaser, and held his own/masked his pain/issues for appearances. Racing thoughts, in my opinion and experience is a sign of intelligence. Deep thoughts. I feel I understand him.

I loved “10 Things I Hate About You” very loosely based on “The Taming of the Shrew”. The scene of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” was so good!
Will you do Brittany murphy? She also died young with prescription drugs in her system.
Loved her 🙁
Wouldn't count on Dr. Grande doing Brittany Murphy. The good doctor has never so much as implied that he's a necrophiliac
I thought he did.
Her husband died as well. Her mother thinks they died from mold inhalation
@@MechaJutaro lol! he seems pretty open to new experiences but conscientious... doesn't seem likely that he is a necrophiliac.

Hey Moxie , how are you?

I loved Heath Ledger! Grabbing my tissues. This was fantastic Dr. Grande! Thank you so much for covering this.
Really appreciate your videos.
My family watched Dr. Phil for so many years, but they’re now hooked on your channel and aren’t looking back.
One of my favorite movies... And Uncle Buck. He was so funny. 🥺
@@BrisLS1 What consumption habits?
@@lynncrf Drank and smoked heavily, was on constant diets and re-gaining, and may have used other substances as well. A highly sensitive soul who sometimes found reality harsh, if not unbearable, so transformed it into humour, not unlike Robin Williams. So he left us with this enormous gift, while he himself was not able to be saved by it.
I believe he's done a profile of John Candy.
It's strange to think I'm close to outliving him - he was 28, I turn 29 in December. I forget sometimes how short his career was in the long run.
He did so much in his short life. He could've been one of the greats of our generation!

wow this is about Ledger. The ego and selfishness of people continues.

The family is very explicit about not wanting people to think that, for some reason. They deny it with a confident gusto.

Four feathers was a great movie,Heath was good at noticing good characters in scripted writing..🕊️
Out of any celebrity early death, Heath ledger was the most devastating for me. He seemed like such a selfless, exceptionally talented, and loving person. As a young man, he is someone I look up to as a role model, even after his death, in that sense his spirit lives on.
You inspire me to go to psychology college ;)
Me too. I learned so much from Dr. Grande.
Agree, INFJ all the way. Only .05 or half of 1 percent of males are so typified, it is Very estranging. I know too well! INFJ-T.
Heath was Bipolar disorder called manic depressive , it is mostly lead to suicide

Grande!
Thanks for another great one Dr.
Haven't even watched this yet, but know, it is going to enlighten, and break my heart simultaneously 😭
Heath, and Chris (Cornell), were two of the more recent, tragic losses...
Thank you
Thank you for taking this one on. Never realized how complex a personality he was. Again, fascinating. ❤💔

Imagine what he would've done when he was older :(
Not sleeping makes you panic.
But I keep fighting to change the stars, for myself and for others, because I know that's what they both would have wanted me to do.🌠🌌✨

Ahhhhh... another treasure from you.
Thank you so very much for another video.

I worked grave shift for one summer and it almost broke me. Never again.
Did you know him , how did u know he was working in night or afternoon shifts , actually my old job caused my mental illness now depression and psychosis you never live just to work only

He sounds like a complex guy.

hi doc, would you consider reviewing the case of the Robert Wagner / Natalie Wood death mystery?
