5:17 The secret to restoring fascia
In this video, I’ll share 9 fascinating facts about fascia and the secret to keeping it healthy.
1. Fascia is the material that surrounds every muscle in the body.
2. Fascia gives the body posture and shape.
3. Fascia adapts to the environment.
4. Cells of the fascia or collagen are called fibroblasts. You have billions of these cells that can migrate through the body and lay down ground substance to allow lubrication and movement.
5. Fascia is highly involved with immune function. Myofascial release, massage, and trigger point therapy can help improve inflammatory conditions of the fascia, such as fibromyalgia and plantar fasciitis.
6. Fascia is stiffened by lack of movement. People often assume they have stiff muscles when they really have stiff fascia.
7. Your fascia extends throughout your entire body and is connected from head to toe. This is why you can often relieve pain associated with tight or inflamed fascia by fascial manipulation in other related parts of the body.
8. Fascia is innervated by tiny nerves that allow the body to know where it is in space, so it’s critical for balance and coordination.
9. Fascia can change in material properties and go from being very rigid to very elastic.
Dynamic motions in different directions can help restore fascia, so don’t do the same stretches and exercises repeatedly! High doses of vitamin D3, along with the cofactors vitamin K2, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin B6, also support your fascia's health.

Thanks for watching! I hope this increases your awareness about fascia. I’ll see you in the next video.
Dr Berg, please, talk about Fascia again and again, it's SO important!
Thanks for the video suggestion.
Mainly in this age of sedentary lifestyle...
@@Drberg please talk about this at least two times more, maybe go in on a more advanced video about the subject. thanks for your knowledge on health and anatomy

My mom was very limber. She could touch, not only the ground - she could put her hands ‘flat’ on the ground with her legs straight.
Until she was 92.
She practiced ballet when she was young.
Wonderful, thanks for sharing!
Wow that’s amazing
She probably had hypermobile joints too!
Historically, I was unable to tie my shoes without sitting or squatting. Since I found the way to release fascia adhesion, I can touch the ground and I'm quite certain soon I'll be able to put my hands flat - almost there. After 3 decades of stiffness, it is still possible to recover to the degree that has never been available. Not even as a child. I'm sure the opportunity spans way beyond 3 decades.
I’ve been able to do that my whole life. 64 and still can! Another good exercise to keep your joints mobile is the Afghan squat. Have your legs spread slightly apart and squat all the way down till your booty taps the floor, then rest in that position. Try doing this while you’re weeding the yard or whenever you have a spare minute. Work your way up to 50 of these a day up and down. You can grab hold of a chair if you need to when starting out.
I never *ignore* the DR BERG video notification 😊
The #1 thing I value is having true health, so that I can have great cognitive function,

agree its like a general checkup or going to your doctor
Mate, Been watching your videos for a while now and you’re consistently more helpful than any medical professional that I or my family has been treated by. From the bottom of my heart, thank you
This is probably the most important video by Dr. Berg. Millions of people undergo spinal surgery each year because of they and their doctors think that their problems are caused by herniated discs. In reality, in 99,99% of the cases lower back, sacrum, sciatica and hip pains are caused by myofascial pain syndrome and by tight muscles, not by bulged discs, arthritis and other joint problems
Appreciate your input!
@@Drberg Appreciate your output xD! No but seriously, thank you so much!
I do shoulder hangs from a bar about every 90 minutes every day of my life. I get cracks of numerous vertebrae up and down my spine every single time I do it. And usually they end in a chain reaction where the bottom vertebrae of my back end up with an absolutely huge crack. I know exactly what's going to happen every time I do it. In every single time I do it it feels amazing.
I was 27 years old when I experienced a bulging disc and I had never been fitter in my life! After inspection I had serious degeneration of 2 vertebrae in the middle of my spine. The pain was bad and that area of my back has been a problem for the rest of my sporting/working life.
@@peterbulloch4328 It is likely that you have tight back muscles and maybe fasciitis. I had a bulging disc and degeneration of a few discs and suffered from a low back and hip pain on the right side. It turned out, all these problems were caused by tight QL and gluteal muscles and fasciitis on the right side. I was considering back surgery and stem cells injection, and then I found out what the real problem was. It took me a couple of months to stretch the muscles, and now all these problems are gone.
I was thinking yesterday that dancing, yoga, swimming, are probably the best exercise for fascia
Possibly also resistance bands, jump rope?
rebounding ))) buy a trampoline
Thanks for sharing, appreciated!

What a great explanation.
Taijiquan and QiGong is based around fascia exercise. This is the goal. Pull on the fascia you pull on the immune system. Pull on the immune system , immune system becomes stronger. Therefore you don't get ill. Simple. However to work the fascia you need to not use fast twitch muscles(pretty muscles). Most people don't even build the slow twitch thicker muscles around the bone. Let alone the Fascia. When you start to feel the elastic band that is our body; you're getting close to working this vital and integral part of our body
As a Taijiquan teacher, I could talk about the spiderweb network of our body all day. Thank you Dr Berg for bringing this very broad subject to light.
Cheers
The human body is an amazing piece of kit...
I first learned about fascia in 2007 in massage therapy school. Fascia has liquidity with heat and solidifies with cold
Great, I always hope to hear Dr. Berg discussing Fascia. Learning about fascia help me understand better about traditional martial arts such as TaiChi. It is a common misconception to think TaiChi is about relaxing. Instead, it is about becoming elastic through posture. Taichi is not about any individual form, but about how you move with certain posture. Hanging the head and sinking the abdomen, curling the toes create vertical stretch; Opening the hips, shoulder, sinking the elbow create horizontal stretch. Maintain the trunk position helps maintain the fascia tension.
Could you please tell me who would be good to follow for Tai Chi?
@@trindakajans165 I personally find @Practicalmethod channel helpful. I first heard the connection between taichi and fascia from @HyperarchFasciaTraining. I never directly train from them though, my taichi instructor does not like posting youtube videos. My experience is that good taichi instructors use different metaphors to explain the same thing from different angles. Knowing the connection between taichi and facia provides a scientific framework to understand taichi. When fascia is stretched, the tension gives an inflated elastic feeling, traditionally, it is described as 'Chi'.
@@konekopawa9039 thank you so much!😊
I had the same impression about Thai Chi. The bow stance (if I name it correctly) is the one I used to explain to my friends, it gave me the impression its a sort of nerve stretching in lack of better explanation at that time.
Tom Myers has been researching the actual meridian network in a western style, coined the term Anatomy Trains in the title of his book.
About the efficacy of Thai Chi or Yoga for that matter - almost the same core principle, yet slightly different methods - when one is wrestling with a jar that doesn't want to open, there is trick: open your chest, pull back and hang your shoulders then stretch your hands lengthwise like if you were to reach into some invisible gloves, just try to reach further. That stretch will increase the power of your grip to the degree you will open the jar without any effort - the same that would not open before. Pure magic.
If you can do the same to your entire body ..
I've heard that expert Thai Chi folks are sort of flying in the air - never seen, though.
Fascianating!
We love you from Iraq 🇮🇶❤♥
Appreciate the support!
YES!!!! Ive been waiting for Dr Berg to talk more about this sort of thing. People don't realize that most physical pain comes from how we hold our bodies, it has to do with fascia and our muscles, the inflammation leads to pressure on nerves, which causes the reffered pain we experience
Thanx Doc,always helpful. Blessings.
Wow, great content! Cheers for sharing 👍🏼
Thank you for your sharing this ❤❤❤
Thank you for making a video on fascia. As someone with Elhers Danlos Syndrome my fascia is what helps me support my extra mobile ligaments. I also get sore fascia from all the work it does.
I have EDS, too. Myofascial release has been a lifesaver.
Thanks Doc
I’m surprised he’s just now getting to videos on this. I’ve been doing a myofacia release therapy since Nov 2023. It’s absolutely wonderful. Great to release stored emotions and trauma. This along with yoga and of course, healthy keto. 😊
That really was educating!

Thank you for this! I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid and Psoriatic Arthritis. They all played havoc with my tendons, ligaments and muscles....as well as my fascia. It used to be excruciating to have anyone work on me (massage, etc). Keto/Carnivore resolved all of the inflammation and I'm finally at a place that I can start actually moving again. My fascia no longer hurts just to touch my skin. I was looking for some videos that would help break up the fascia "stickiness". Hopefully the pinned videos can give me a place to start.
Hi! How long are u on keto now?
Appreciate your sharing your experience, and very glad keto/ carnivore resolve the inflammation. Keep up the good work!
Look for yin yoga on u tube, it’s designed for fascia.
It's been the same for me. Yes Keto/Carnivore works, good quality supplements, Tai Chi, increasing sun exposure and other physical activities are helpful as well. Take good care 🙏🏻💜

Wow! How timely... I've been experiencing all of those symptoms and couldn't figure out what was wrong... I used to exercise as you described, but over the years, less and less... I bought a massager(vibrator) to loosen up specific muscles. It works but only to a point. At 73, I really need to get out more and exercise with Purpose... Thank you for this video. It's a Big help and reminder 🙂
Thank you, Dear Dr. Berg. You explained it beautifully.
Great explanation!
Glad it was informative!
Awesome info video thanks for sharing
Very glad you enjoyed it!
Fascia is the most important and ignored tissue. No chiropractic or osteopathic adjustments can work if the fascia is so tight that it pulls the body back out of place within hours.
I usually have so much inflammation that we need to beat that into submission before we can get a good adjustment in, 😂 i have a tendency to overdo, then I really hurt myself, 🤣. Ice packs here I come, 🤣🤣🤣. Then off to the chiropractor, 😉
100%. I'm going through this now, and it is a very slow process to get my fascia to adapt to the correct posture.
On the contrary, if you fix the fascia the joints go back to their place with no effort. Chiropractic and Osteopathy are excellent for treating acute issues. Just like western doctors, won't be able to help until you are about die. Crisis Management is the name of the game, unfortunately. (with the greatest respect to the exceptions of this statement)
Im now suffering with planter fasciaitis. This is really a timely information for me doc. Thanks a lot.
Great video, Dr Berg. Since we barely get sunshine here in the UK, increasing Vit D3 intake and doing more walking/physical exercise, I'm feeling better and healthier. Thanks ❤😊
Very glad it's helping, keep going!
Fascinating!
Thank you dr ❤❤

Thank you, especially for the psoas information. This caused me major pain 5 years ago, and took me 2 years to figure it out on my own. Just think of all the unnecessary hip surgeries and meds! I fixed mine with a daily 30-minute stretching yoga routine. love & light, Dr. Berg.
Good info doc 👍
Thank you!
Thanks.

I'm an acupuncturist and also do a lot of Chinese massage (Tui Na). I believe this is why Acupuncture works so well because it addresses the fascia. Thanks so much for sharing Dr. Berg.
That was my impression, too. Acupuncture could be applied directly into fascia adhesion, which wasn't the case in my experience. Also, the fascia networks seems to coincide with the meridian networks. Reinventing the wheel in the western world.
Foundation Training stretching/mobility helped me soo much. ✌🏽

I was diagnosed with chronic compartment syndrome 5 years ago I thought it was shin splints because of sprinting.
Worked on static holds to stretch the fascia combined with some calf raises. Now it is 5 years straight I'm playing football combined with occasional 100m sprints.
I keep telling my hubby that the body is made to move not sit still but he doesn't listen and now he looks like a 90 year old man. Says he can't help it but he never liked moving.

Very good, I try to stand as much as possible during day, every one thinks I am crazy! When standing, your muscles are engaged, they become stronger, it holds you up, less compression on your back!
