Yeah, game was totally in Nintendo Power. It was the only place I've actually seen the game until watching a video online like several years ago. Looks like it's April of 1993 issue (Star Fox on the cover, issue 47, page 26).
My nerdy ass loves the Japanese mythology the game is drenched in. There's just so many youkai, gods, important figures, and stories that the game features, even if only for a moment sometimes. Care like that hasn't been used often, like... God of War recently did well with bringing the mythos to life, but many times it's just the names or maybe one single story, isolated from the greater mythos.
The 2 n64 games are in my own personal top 5 list of best hidden gems. However, the gameboy one that the u.s. got is one of the worst games I have ever played.

I suspect one of the reason it wasn't talked about much when it came here would be the cutesy nature of the characters, that and how much culture is presented in the game. There was that weird period in time when people were either afraid of foreign culture, or the people in charge of bringing stuff over here thought we were.

At least these days I get to play a bit first on stream so we dont get as badly stuck. Like we used to with videos like Comix Zone and Dennis the Menace..
It could be so fun if James did a Nerd episode where he somehow visits himself from another timeline where he is the Happy Video Game Nerd, a timeline where he only grew up playing great games like this, and the Angry Nerd then decides that he wants to stay, but Happy Nerd convinces him that his own timeline NEEDS him to review all the bad games, that in order for there to be balance in the universe they must remain in their own native timelines, doing what they both do best, and Angry Nerd then reluctantly agrees to go back, realizing how important his role in the universe is.

Fester's quest is an amazing game. It's one of those you can play through when just wanna play something. Fairly easy to beat too. As long as you make it past the fourth boss (always called him the owl) with the machine gun you're almost done. Awesome music too.
