You actually found an easter egg by accident. By shooting Ridley 100 times at the start, he almost drops the metroid baby before grabbing it again. It’s a very obscure secret tidbit!
I love the attention to detail in this game. One of the few sidescrollers at the time where the main character's sprite wasn't the same depending on which direction it's facing. For example, Samus's cannon stays on the same arm and doesn't swap if you change direction. I remember thinking that was awesome when I was younger.

If you look at a map of the NES Metroid, the Mother Brain actually is directly above the starting point of the game. You can't get there by the starting elevator though, and you have to get other abilities to travel to it, but it is indeed very close.
Fun little tidbit: When you finally push Crocomire into the acid, you can see a trail of bubbles going to the left where he will break through the wall.
I'm surprised they got Ridley to drop the baby because they sounded like they haven't played this game in ages but that was really well done. Normally he just escapes when Samus' energy falls bellow 30 but they did enough damage to him to make him drop it.

On the intro Ridley fight you can actually damage him enough to make him temporarily drop the Metroid for a second before flying off. Just gotta be really good at avoiding his attacks.
