Ripley is the original. She started it all. Before her, females (for the most part) were secondary characters next to male protagonists in film. They were there either crying to be saved, for T and A, or both. Example; Almost every ol' school Bond girl. Thanks to Ripely's badassary in the Alien franchise, audiences could now appreciate and were much more accepting of a heroic/badass female lead to save the day. This opened the door for all the other badasses on this list to shine. Without Ripley who knows how long it would have taken cinema to let females become badasses on film? 'Nuff said.
Rhys Davies agree... especially since in a new hope a lot of people at first were expecting a cliche damsel in distress princess rescue, but she practically is the one who took charge and rescued the gang off the death star, and then in Jedi, is the one who goes to rescue her man. Her character could have been an annoying screaming scared princess but was instead pretty bad ass.
Where is Leia Organa? She shoot Stoormtrooper, she kills Jabba the Hut on her own, she encases as bounty hunter to save Han, she is very lippy, she is a great leader. She needs a place on this list!

I think that the Lisbeth Salander character portrayed by Noomi Rapace is better than the one of Rooney Mara; although both are very good. And I agree that the absence of Project Alice is inexplicable.
They had Katniss but not Leeloo/Alice/Ultraviolet? This was a totally crap list. And not one on the list was a woman of color either...Catwoman(Halle and Eartha), Pam Grier, Lucy Liu, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoey Saldana, etc.
Jodie Foster's character in the brave one???????? Also Hit Girl is better than a mention... Same with Lara Croft and Fox... Salt is badass as fuck too... Mila Jovovich as Alice in resident evil, Hermoine Granger, Soairse Ronan in Hanna, Zoe Saldana as Columbiana, Miranda Otto as Eowyn in Lord of the Rings, Rosario Dawson and Devon Aoki in Sin City, Beyonce Knowles in Obsessed, Charlize as Furiosa, Babydoll from Suckerpunch, Michelle Rodriguez in any role she has played basically...
Noooo, not katniss. Im really beginning to hate the hunger games franchise by seeing it everywhere and the fanboys and fangirls are always complaining. All the honorable mentions were a lot badasser than katniss.
Patrick Koekenbier eh, she was badass in the first and even a little in the second film/book. The fact that she's clearly going through ptsd is what makes her character interesting in the later books/films, but I agree not very badass at the moment.
Patrick Koekenbier unlike other characters in fiction katniss is portrayed as human she not written as badass as her only quality she is human therefore she more relateable.
animejerk05 yeah, but she isn't a badass. she may be portrayed as a human which indeed makes her more relateable, but that doesn't mean she is a badass. She nags and cries a lot (which in her position I probably also would do, that her best friend is captured and people are being killed and all that). But relateable or not, i don't think she is badass enough to be on the list, especially not since Eowyn isn't on it, while she killed the witchking in lotr. way more badass in my opinion. But yeah I get your opinion
It's too bad that it's only now that they're coming out with a live action Wonder Woman movie. 20 years ago Linda Hamilton or Sigourney Weaver would have made the perfect Wonder Woman. If not them then Lucy Lawless.
My personal picks for numbers 2 and 1 are Sarah Conner, and Ellen Ripley. Haven't watched the video yet, they may pick someone different, but I stand by my picks till death;) Two of the greatest movie warriors of all time. No doubt.
How was Princess Leia left off this list? Yeah, she didn't knockout a bunch of dudes or take on a monstrous creature; but she was a complete hardass that even made Han Solo look like a damsel in distress when she saved them in the detention center. She talked crap to a general and called Vader a dog to his face! She was TORTURED by Vader and gave him nothing. Bad form +WatchMojo.
Called No. 1. But I would have thought Alice from the Resident Evil films would be on here. Sure, the films are terrible. But she's badass enough to be somewhere on this list.
Finally a list of women from WatchMojo that has nothing to do with how hot, sexy or beautiful they are. It's about time and I hope for lists like this in the future.
Do badass video game female characters next (Jade from Beyond Good & Evil, Faith from Mirror's Edge, Ciri from Witcher 3, Kerrigan from Starcraft, etc)
Dixie Kong as well, she saved the clan leader, Donkey Kong from K Rool twice, saved her boyfriend, diddy Kong, once and taunted the guy who kidnapped them during the boss fight and has never been kidnapped.
I totally agree with Ellen Ripley. She manages to be a total bad ass but also being sexy by not looks but maternal instinct. It will be doubtful that anyone will top that character.
You're missing Michelle Rodriguez in ANY movie she's ever played. Michelle Rodriguez is a badass in & out of movies, but I agree 99% with this list. You're only missing Clarice from Hannibal.
Good list, especially the Top 3 re perfectly chosen But missing: Furiosa (ok, she's new, but damn badass), Jackie Brown, Shosanna Dreyfus, Michelle Pfeiffer/Anne Hathaway Ctwoman, Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil and the fifth element) and also a little Leia Organa (but only honourable mention to that list) And two woman, that are portrayed more crazy but also have her badass sides in that performance, are Marla Singer and Amazing Amy
Ellen Ripley is such a bad ass because she's so believable, she doesn't have super human powers or unnatural strength and speed, she's just a natural born leader and warrior and was minding her own business when circumstances forced it to the surface. Same goes for Sarah Connor. "Expresses no fear in times of crisis..." Nonsense, she's shitting her pants all through parts one and two, it's the fact she still acts decisively in spite of it the makes her brave.
Yeah, no offense, Hermione was good, like really, really good, but she wasn't badass at all, especially since she's always crying on every single movie, since the Sorcerer's Stone all the way to Deathly Hallows part 2 she's always crying for something!
@IGNACIO GODOY ARAYA but that's just it, I love it when the female characters for once are invincible and an unstoppable force to be reckoned with, that's why Alice is my favourite female protagonist cause nothing can stop them high heels during a zombie invasion
I don't care about the rest, you guys nailed the top 3! Ripley is diffenitely No. 1. Anyone who saw the Alien franchise back in the day knows this. Well done!
Sideny (Neve Campbell) from Scream films, Alice from Resident Evil Franchise Scarlett Witch/Wanda, Natasha Romanova and Yelena Belova in the Marvel films.
This was a good list, don't get me wrong. But it's a shame they were all straight, white conventionally attractive females. A little diversity would have been cool.
Devon Garcia Foxy Brown, for one? Lucy Liu in The Man With The Iron Fists and Kill Bill? The ladies from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? Halle Berry as Storm? Any of these women ringing any bells, Watchmojo?
i have 3 honourable mentions 1. dola the leader of the airship pirates from castle in the sky 2. nausica from nausica of the valley of the wind 3. Christine from Christine (yes i know she's a car)

9:39: Yup, Vasquez is somewhat forgotten along the way.. Maybe because she is not the leading character. I also love the Trudy Chacon character in Avatar, played by Michelle Rodriguez! "You are NOT the the only one with a gun, bitch.." I personally hope, that she actually had time to shoot herself out of that damaged heli and come back for the next movie!! :-D I personally think, that James Cameron must have MET some tough ladies, when he was in the army, as he was, before he started makin films! I love it! And so do a LOT of my friends!
LoL Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft speaks the "stop" at 9:04 like a german. In englisch you hear stop but in German we say it like "shtop" (it's still written stop), a easy example is like you say show or shampoo. Did i explained it understandable?
HOW THE FUCK IS SARAH CONNOR NOT #1? Ripley deserve the solid number 2 Don't get me wrong Ripley is a badass And the whole "GET AWAY FROM HER YOU BITCH" Line will forever go down in history as a badass phrase spoken by a badass but come on. Sarah Connor was locked away in a asylum doing pull ups all day getting mad diesel yo, she would beat the shit out of everyone on this list in hand to hand combat. Oh well to each his own I guess that's just my opinion
azrael80304 Ripley is the original. She started it all. Before her, females (for the most part) were secondary characters next to male protagonists in film. azrael80304 Ripley crafted the blue print for the bad ass female roles after her. Sarah Connor is a power house too, but let's made a little comparison between those two: Ripley fought with the most dangerous aliens ever in the entire cinematic universe, had a freaking embryo in her chest, sacrificed her life to save others, reborn as a half alien/ half human clone and killed more aliens. Connor on the other hand was a simple girl, running in fear the entire first movie, while in the second one - like you said- ''doing pull ups and getting mad diesel''. Yes, she had few truly bad ass scenes in Judgement Day, but she's not a #1 material for that top.
Alice, Black Widow, Sarah Connor, even Laura Croft. All female characters that are badass, they SHOW you that they're capable of taking out people, they SHOW you their strength. The producers DON'T tell you that they're strong, they SHOW you.
My favorite badass female movie characters would be both Salt (Portrayed as Angelina Jolie) from "Salt" movie in 2010 and Ava (Portrayed as Jessica Chastain) in 2020. Why? Because they are the two most badass females who will defeat enemies who stand in her way! They should be in this Watchmojo movie list however, they did not appeared. Oh well, at least I can see them in action by watching them in movieclips on RUclips, at the same time : )
I think that Alice from the Resident Evil franchise should've made the list.
Alan Salazar sooo true my dear!

How about Eron from you're next?

Hi
Alice from Resident Evil???!!!
Well Resident Evil is a video game. The movies are a myth, it never actually happened
Everyone have their opinion. For me. There should be Milla Jovovich No.1 Badass Female Character.

She kicked horror right in the face!

i was expecting Alice from RE, she is awesome!
I fully agree. She Leia is classic !
I'm sorry for the bad grammar.
deryl lawrence
Know ned two apallowjize! (See...? The internet didn't break.)
+dorsal 2008 lol! Thanks.
+dorsal 2008 And she hardly ever missed a shot. I like the fact she never had time to mourn her home planet when it was destroyed.
Called No. 1.
But I would have thought Alice from the Resident Evil films would be on here. Sure, the films are terrible. But she's badass enough to be somewhere on this list.
Muscular women have started slowly to appear, that is very nice indeed. You should do your top 20 muscular women in movies, then in tv shows, etc.
Finally a list of women from WatchMojo that has nothing to do with how hot, sexy or beautiful they are. It's about time and I hope for lists like this in the future.
Ugh where's milla jovovinch (resident evil, ultraviolet, the three musketeers, faces in the crowd)
Uma Thurman better be number 1 for playing the Bride in Kill Bill.
Edit: F U Watchmojo
Shane Bovell Atleast they didn't put Bel(ugh I just threw-up a little in my mouth) Bella Swanson from Twilight.
MUMUMUMUist lol you're right, I'm not sure anything she ever did in the entire series was badass though so I felt safe.
***** get over yourself
I was hoping she was too. She's the first person that came to mind for me, oh well though. :(
Ripley fought Xenomorphs. 'Nuff said!
Do badass video game female characters next (Jade from Beyond Good & Evil, Faith from Mirror's Edge, Ciri from Witcher 3, Kerrigan from Starcraft, etc)
Bayonetta, samus aran.
Lucina, impa, ellie...
Dixie Kong as well, she saved the clan leader, Donkey Kong from K Rool twice, saved her boyfriend, diddy Kong, once and taunted the guy who kidnapped them during the boss fight and has never been kidnapped.
All of Mortal Kombat's chicks like Sonya Blade, Kitana, Jade, Mileena, Skarlett and so on.
Rubi Malone
I totally agree with Ellen Ripley. She manages to be a total bad ass but also being sexy by not looks but maternal instinct. It will be doubtful that anyone will top that character.
Black widow,Katniss Everdeen,Mystique and Selene
Mystique was too cringy.
You're missing Michelle Rodriguez in ANY movie she's ever played.
Michelle Rodriguez is a badass in & out of movies, but I agree 99% with this list.
You're only missing Clarice from Hannibal.
Absolutely agree, Adorable strength at Michelle , really attractive and full of evil energy
Clarice from Silence of the Lambs is a bigger badass than Julianne Moore’s Clarice.
What the hell? No Eva Green for Artemisia?
Furiosa better be top 5.
Good list, especially the Top 3 re perfectly chosen
But missing: Furiosa (ok, she's new, but damn badass), Jackie Brown, Shosanna Dreyfus, Michelle Pfeiffer/Anne Hathaway Ctwoman, Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil and the fifth element) and also a little Leia Organa (but only honourable mention to that list)
And two woman, that are portrayed more crazy but also have her badass sides in that performance, are Marla Singer and Amazing Amy
Ellen Ripley is such a bad ass because she's so believable, she doesn't have super human powers or unnatural strength and speed, she's just a natural born leader and warrior and was minding her own business when circumstances forced it to the surface. Same goes for Sarah Connor.
"Expresses no fear in times of crisis..."
Nonsense, she's shitting her pants all through parts one and two, it's the fact she still acts decisively in spite of it the makes her brave.
Hmm... Just one thing...
WHERE'S HERMIONE JANE GRANGER?
JEAN*
***** Agreed. (see what I did there?)
Yeah, no offense, Hermione was good, like really, really good, but she wasn't badass at all, especially since she's always crying on every single movie, since the Sorcerer's Stone all the way to Deathly Hallows part 2 she's always crying for something!
TV/Movies/Pizza/Sushi Lover She is a complete badass.
*+Returded Phoenixmorph* Out of the eight Harry Potter movies, there were one or two scenes of her crying on each one of them.
WHERE IS PRINCESS LEIA?????
where is Lara Croft
In the Honourable Mentions
My favorite is Uma Thurman in Kill Bill....best badass of all!!
I'd put sarah connor as #1, but I guess I'm just glad she was on the list. Ellen is cool too.
black widow should be nr. 1
no. Ripley took on an entire alien nest alone
Where tf is Resident Evil?????😕
Crap series
SpeedDemon1152 no it isn't
@IGNACIO GODOY ARAYA that's your opinion that's why they have 6 movies cause they were trash......
@IGNACIO GODOY ARAYA but that's just it, I love it when the female characters for once are invincible and an unstoppable force to be reckoned with, that's why Alice is my favourite female protagonist cause nothing can stop them high heels during a zombie invasion
Alice from the Resident Evil series.
I don't care about the rest, you guys nailed the top 3! Ripley is diffenitely No. 1. Anyone who saw the Alien franchise back in the day knows this. Well done!
idea fot top 10 for live action badass female tv characters

Rahul Wankhade she totally should got higher, but that's OK, at least she is on the list
what about Alice in the resident evil franchise she's more bad ass then any of the ones you mentioned
More badass than Sarah Connor or Ellen Ripley.. No she’s not 😂
Lol she is more Mary Sue than anyone =D Beating fcking Nemesis in a fist-fight, what a bulshit
Sigourney Weaver is the best, is the first female action heroe and its inolvidable
Sideny (Neve Campbell) from Scream films, Alice from Resident Evil Franchise Scarlett Witch/Wanda, Natasha Romanova and Yelena Belova in the Marvel films.
First proper watch mojo list in a long time
Amy from Gone Girl?
I don't think she's badaas. She's just fucking crazy.
This was a good list, don't get me wrong. But it's a shame they were all straight, white conventionally attractive females. A little diversity would have been cool.
ItsMeChloeG Be honest, can you name a strong female character who can also kick ass that is of another ethnicity?
Devon Garcia Foxy Brown, for one? Lucy Liu in The Man With The Iron Fists and Kill Bill? The ladies from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? Halle Berry as Storm? Any of these women ringing any bells, Watchmojo?
Devon Garcia Coffy
Ooh I forgot her. Without Coffy there would be no Foxy Brown. Or is it the other way around? Anyway, nice going, Sinessa!
Devon Garcia Zoe(Gina Torres) from serenity
I hoped you would give Noomi Rapace some credit too in the role of Lisbeth Salander... i my opinion, she nailed the role better than Rooney Mara
Ellen Repley i knew it, my favorite female character and i love her!!!
i have 3 honourable mentions
1. dola the leader of the airship pirates from castle in the sky
2. nausica from nausica of the valley of the wind
3. Christine from Christine (yes i know she's a car)
Where's Resident Evil?
before watching...Lara Croft is no. 1
Hell no and she didnt start of as a movie character
Sinpansara Gaming neither did Black Widow or Katness
marsha eisner I expected even just one Angelina Jolie character, no Salt?
greg parch yeah they're not the best ones, but Angelina looked so damn hot back in there ^^
winterwolf211 Salt would have been a better pick
Special thanks to our users WILLYWONKA3505, SaraLance, ZeroAudioOutput1812, David Juarez, Nays Baghai, Sue Schippers, Sam Ricketts, Sean Lavelle, adam02 and Francois for submitting the idea on our Suggestions Page at www.WatchMojo.com/suggest
DO A TOP TEN WEIRDEST BROMANCES!!!!!!!!
WatchMojo.com you forgot the women from resident evil... i cant rememberher name but she was badass as f*ck
KazeDemon Alice is probably who you're thinking of.
What about alice from resident evil?! She is the most badass character i've ever seen in a film....bad list to me
Where the hell is Mulan?
9:26 lol 😂 when you speak when someone else is speaking
Yay for Dizzy as an Honorable Mention!
"Uh, but what about Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad?"
:Says that one guy in the comments who doesn't pay attention to the fucking upload date.
LoL Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft speaks the "stop" at 9:04 like a german.
In englisch you hear stop but in German we say it like "shtop" (it's still written stop), a easy example is like you say show or shampoo.
Did i explained it understandable?
ALITA, Colombiana, Alice (Resident Evil), Wonder Woman (2017), La Femme Nikita (1990), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Salt (2010), Lucy (2014)
the black widow deserves a stand alone film. This girl kicks ass
HOW THE FUCK IS SARAH CONNOR NOT #1? Ripley deserve the solid number 2
Don't get me wrong Ripley is a badass And the whole "GET AWAY FROM HER YOU BITCH" Line will forever go down in history as a badass phrase spoken by a badass but come on. Sarah Connor was locked away in a asylum doing pull ups all day getting mad diesel yo, she would beat the shit out of everyone on this list in hand to hand combat.
Oh well to each his own I guess that's just my opinion
Lol I was thinking the exact same thing
azrael80304 Ripley is the original. She started it all. Before her, females (for the most part) were secondary characters next to male protagonists in film. 'Nuff said.
azrael80304 Ripley crafted the blue print for the bad ass female roles after her.
How about Michelle Rodriguez?
WMTOP10: "#1... Ellen Ripley, the Alien Franchise".
Me: "Well, duh"...
Oh well, at least I can see them in action by watching them in movieclips on RUclips, at the same time : )
@Papa Nope. : )
