    ERIK THE WRENCH
    I followed the shingle manufacturers directions. I did the roof 2 years ago, no problems.
    I over did the tar in valley because we get a lot of snow here, and the roof has too little pitch, gets a lot of ice buildup in that area. Honestly pretty sure that pitch is grandfathered in today and not up to code in that town...
    I did the excessive tar on cap because every other roof on the block including the new ones, the wind has ripped a few off each roof.

      You would go clay or steel roof... Lol. I would hate to see you install standing seam roof if your such a hack at shingles. You should probably go into landscaping instead

    How big of a mess did you end up making with the Karnak?? If flashed and installed properly there's no need for cement or silicone and I live in upstate N.Y.

      @TEN-TIMES-HARDER  5 лет назад +1

      It has been almost 3 years and no problems. If you where to look down the row of roofs. like every house exactly the same, all new roofs. This is the only one the wind did not rip shingles and caps off! Something about how the wind hits there.

    What is the caulking you are using? And how long are the nails? Thanks for info.

    • @TEN-TIMES-HARDER
      @TEN-TIMES-HARDER  5 лет назад +2

      the caulking was regular roofing cement. and the nails will be depending on how many layers of roof, so 2minimum , Id go 2 1/4 to 2 1/2. its ok if they poke out the other side, its actually good for them to poke through...

    I got a house in the Colorado High Desert, the last time it was roofed was thirty years ago and the shingles are worn, rounded, and most of the surface granules have weathered away (heat, hail, wind and rain are a beach). There's no damage from leaking on the inside, but i can see one area of the roof that sags.
    I cant get homeowners insurance because they ALL want a new roof on the house first, and each has a local roofer they suggest. I recieved no quote under $23k inspite of materials being estimated at under 6k. That said, I'm going to attempt to reroof on my own. This and a few other videos are giving me confidence to do it. The house is a ranch and the roof's slope is low, with no gutters, so that's my project next fall.

    How much do you save realistically from not tearing off old roof?

    • @TEN-TIMES-HARDER
      @TEN-TIMES-HARDER  5 лет назад +2

      2k. a roll off dumpster, material. Plus 4 men at 25$ an hour cash for a 10 hour day of hard labor. At least.
      Not sure where your from but I have never heard of tearing off a single layer shingle unless their is damage beneath!
      And the truth, if I tear off a roof, I am not putting asphalt shingles back up! Steel, clay or rubber. I don’t need some cheap asphalt to look like cedar shingles lol

    • @irietropicals4255
      @irietropicals4255 5 лет назад

      ERIK THE WRENCH I agree 100%. I’m in Florida, had a new shingle put on last July and a recent hail storm damaged my shingles so they said I need a new one. I been pondering what to do now. Shingle over the old ones, metal over shingle or do strip/ shingle again.

    • @TEN-TIMES-HARDER
      @TEN-TIMES-HARDER  5 лет назад +1

      Metal roofs are awesome and will last longer than you do lol you need to do a tear off for that. , in Florida you want a bright color to reflect the sun, on a 100 degree day, a black surface will be 117• it holds the light...
      And you can also put a rubberized coating on the metal roof for noise and heat insulation.

    • @irietropicals4255
      @irietropicals4255 5 лет назад

      You wouldn’t recommend metal over shingle with reflective underlayment? I’m just trying to save some $$

      @@irietropicals4255 Well I Really couldn't say, you would have to check wit the local code b4. A tear off can be done by yourself but its hard work, you just need a couple pitchforks and a friend who will work for beer lol

      all up to code. in this town a complete tearoff is required after the second layer of shingle so no matter what, its a comolete tearoff next job, and ten years later, customer just sold house, never had an issue, still recommends me.

    • @TEN-TIMES-HARDER
      @TEN-TIMES-HARDER  4 года назад

      If I missed something it slipped, you cut the shingle length wise in half and this is called the kicker. It is the first row of shingles, so how they overlap, right, the first layer needs the half shingle top part to sit on as well....

    lol, there are so many things wrong here its not funny. You are not a roofer my friend. Mistake number one, no underlay, all shingle manufactures require a proper underlay, regardless if a roof over or not, thus you have already voided the warrantee. Second your using what looks like 2 or 2 1/2 inch nails, which is way overkill, the next roofer is going to hate you when it comes to the tear off. Third if your using glue or caulk as your call it you've done it wrong, all that glue is a crapload of mini dams when it comes to water, which WILL get behind shingles especially at each seam. Water needs to flow, and whenever your prevent that flow its just a matter of time before your have an issue, it might take a year or two but it will eventually leak. Forth a ridge vent should have been installed to help the roof cool itself. The number one enemy of a roof is not snow or ice, providing it has the proper underlay but the sun itself. With 2 layers of shingles you've created a super heated layer of air between the 2 roofs, which will break down that roof much quicker. Finally pipe phalanges should never be 'reused', these are high leak areas, in fact in my 35 years of roofing about 90% of leaks are mostly traced back to pipe flashings. They cost like 18 bucks for a good phalange and should be replaced, any damaged lead should be ground out and replaced.
    Getting back to the underlay which you clearly stated was 'just for expansion and contraction of the shingles', is totally false. Proper underlay especially along the eves and valleys with sometype of gold, red, or blue shield to protect against ice backup should be installed. I personally do 72 inches in both the valleys and along the eves. I also place it around chimneys, making sure to wrap it up the chimney behind the flashing for extra protection. The rest of the underlay, which I prefer to use synthetic paper ensures that the new roofing can properly breathe, and as I already stated is required by all new shingles.
    Finally, I suggest your learn how to do a long island cut valley, they are much easier to install, much faster and look way nicer.
    Overall its a good job, but I guarantee it will leak and break down, My guess is that they will need to replace the roof within 15 years or less, when it should last 25 to 30 years. I do apologize if this came off aggressive.

    • @TEN-TIMES-HARDER

      @MarkStLouis-ew5cu Год назад

      @@TEN-TIMES-HARDER Wait, are you saying that the shingles had instructions for a roof over? I've never heard of this, all shingles I've installed highly recommends removal of existing shingles, and does not warrantee a roof over.
