  • Ginisang munggo or Mung Bean Soup is a Filipino classic stew made with mung beans, fried pork bits, onion, garlic, tomato, and seasoned with pork cube, pepper and fish sauce. It can be flavoured with different types of meat. it is a Filipino favorite that is packed with lots of nutritional benefits and vitamins. This protein-rich dish is one of the famous dishes known to be “food for the people”. It is a good side dish from fried ulams.

    INGREDIENTS
    1 cup mung beans
    5 cups water
    1 cup pork bits
    1 medium-sized onion, chopped
    3 cloves garlic, minced
    2 pcs small tomatoes, diced
    1 piece pork broth cube (optional)
    pepper to taste
    1 to 2 cups rice water or pork broth
    salt or fish sauce to taste
    1 bunch of leaves (ampalaya/malunggay/sili leaves)
    DIRECTIONS
    Wash the mung beans and remove the floating ones. Transfer the mung beans in a pot and pour with enough water. Cook until it is soft and mushy.
    Heat a pan and add the pork bits until some oil has been rendered.
    When the pork bits are starting to brown, push them on one side of the pan. Saute the onions and garlic. Add the tomatoes and gently crush while sautéing.
    Add the boiled mung beans and sauté with the rest of the ingredients. Add a pork broth cube (optional).
    Season the sautéed mung beans with pepper. Add some rice water or pork broth depending on how soupy you want the sautéed mung beans to be. Simmer for 10 minutes using medium heat.
    Season with salt or fish sauce. Add the leaves and submerge gently to cook. Let it simmer for a few minutes.
    Transfer the ginisang munggo in a serving plate. Enjoy!

    ganito ang gusto kong luto sa munggo yung hiwalay na nilalaga ang munggo at naglalagay din ako patis para mas malasa at mabango yung luto. saktong sakto talaga ang pritong isda para sa dish na ito. sarap nyan 👍🏻

    I hope I don’t forget the water when I wash my rice. Nice that’s how my mom use to make it. She would give a lil bowl of mongo after it boiled with a lil sugar.

    Madali ung way ng pagluluto kaya lng ung iba kc ..inaalis nila ung balat ng munggo..kc habang pinapa kuluan ito ang nalutang ung balat ng munggo at ina alis nila ito...dito ok na ok easy way to cook ginisang monggo..😊

    substitute the rice water with coconut milk (coconut MILK not coconut water) and replace ampalaya with spinach and that's how cebuanos eat it

    We're here in the states I've learned how to make it. Basically the same recipe except for the greens we use spinach. (It's his grandmother's recipe). Could we find those greens you used in a little Asian shop? I would love to try it. I don't think they would travel well and I don't know if anyone has even tried to grow it here. (Please excuse my ignorance). And if anybody wants to answer we also add rice vinegar to taste is that weird? A family thing? Common? I don't know. I'm a pasty Irish girl good with potatoes and red meat. This is my favorite stew by far and my husband taught me how to make it.

      Do not add vinegar, it's no longer sauteed munggo. You can use chili leaves or spinac
      You can also cook lentils and green split beans like Ginisang Munggo.

      @@Lenilugz5406 I like the added rice vinegar. Must be a family or "to taste thing" any other vinegar is nasty though. I've made that mistake.

      @@bettym1150 rule of the thumb when im browsing for recipes on the net is to never listen to people who says thats not what the “authentic” recipe is. A lot of these recipes where discovered because humans were creative in making their food taste more than edible. If everyone sticked to the authentic recipe then we will forever have salted meat as our dinner. Cooking should be fun and not something to be gatekeeped.

    In my country we use only the bigger beans, we actually don't have small and green hard beans. We cook it similarly in one receipt. We use pork ribs mostly, instead of the leafs you added (we don't have them btw) we use green parsley to garnish. And if it's winter we usually use some canned tomatoes or tomato paste.
    But I know how to cook yours also, I just use spinach leafs. My husband is Asian.

    may asian market dito sa lugar ko kaya nakakapag luto ako ng ginisang monggo pero gamit ko iyong fresh na pusit medium size basta huwag isasama iyong ink at hugasang mabuti...siyempre patis at nilalagyan ko rin ng beef powder ( maalat po ito, iba po siya sa beef boullion sa pinas at may konting lasa ng consome) siya po ang ginagawa kong pinaka asin...mas malasa po ang monggo after 1 day na. salamat sa video
