Been on Adderall since 2006. I still find, to this day, that it is weird that caffeine actually makes one sleepy!

Caffeine has never kept me awake in my life, like everyone always says. It just made me a bit more focused. I never knew this was a symptom of ADHD which I was diagnosed with (as well as Asperger's) two weeks ago at age 68. Wonder what my life would have been had I known sooner. My son was diagnosed at age 7, but no explanation of this issue was discussed then, didn't know he got it from me!
This has been extremely beneficial and I appreciate your willingness to help individuals with the proper understanding and information in how ADHD medications work and how they provide assistance with treatment.

When my Doctor prescribed me Dexedrine for my ADD (Inattentive) my marks in College went from 40% to 93%. I graduated Electronics with Honors. God bless Dexedrine.

Thank you for the video. I’ve taken adderall for 19 years and of course before that I was put on Ritalin in the big Ritalin era so it seemed. Anyways, today is my first day taking vyvanse. I can’t contribute any useful information on the differences just yet but will give it a week or two and then provide some feedback. I chose to make the switch because of the stigma that comes with the name of Adderall. Such as the stigmas that come with “ADHD” in general and what the common public believe to be only some kind of disorder that makes people hyper or something. For instance, me in particular battle immense emotional regulation problems along with a lifelong inability to prioritize anything at all and I think I’m bored with nothing going on so I always have tons of unfinished projects. And these things affect my family negatively. Along with many many other things, those 3 traits are the ones that I dislike the most. Fortunately enough for me, stimulants make that better for me (I won’t speak for all) I wish that I could explain to everyone in the world that isn’t familiar with it that it’s far more than that. It affects so many things in my day to day life and I’ve spent a large portion of my general life attempting to understand me. I’m 31 and had I been smarter and given the option as a kid, I would have chose no medicine so that I could have a chance of regulating myself without medication this far into my life. However that’s not the case and I can’t choose to go without medication now because I’ve tried numerous times and have failed every time. Although I feel more free and myself off of stimulants, I have a career with co workers that don’t or won’t understand (I’ve tested the waters off of medication at work). I lose interest in what I do too easily off of medicine and wish more than anything that I had learned how to regulate that as a kid. I have a wonderful family that relies on me and I simply can’t afford to keep trying to get off medicine so I’ve decided to try vyvanse to take once in the morning and forget about for the rest of the day without a second dose mid day every day to keep from deciding not to take it and I figured by switching, it will somehow trick my mind away from the feelings I have with the stigma that comes with the name “Adderall”. Anyhow, useless information I know. Just wanted to say thanks for the video :)

I'm 31 and just being diagnosed with ADHD. I am on a waitlist to see a psychiatrist. I spent my whole life without medication for this and I'm in the exact same spot as you and it is getting worse. Especially with the motivation. If medication helps with this life then it helps, nothing wrong with that. It's like people who take blood thinners, because they need to to live better.
@@7Underwood7 I’m incredibly sorry, I had no idea anyone wrote to me, my notifications aren’t working apparently. The Vyvanse worked well for me. Honestly, the only major problem I had was that it didn’t last as long as it should have or that it’s supposed to. This led me to the thought process multiple times of “I’ll just take a second dose”. That’s obviously problematic in several ways. The biggest one is that your setting yourself up for failure because you are only provided enough for one pill a day for 30 days. And one other thing I will say is that I already have an issue with depression and the vyvanse seemed to start dampening my mood and more often seem to help trigger a depressive episode and made it even harder to get out of than depression already is to get out of by itself. Adderall did not do that to me and that reason alone, I switched back to the adderall.
On a positive note, I will say one thing.. the vyvanse was much smoother than adderall. And what I mean is that the transition from unmedicated to medicated after taking the medicine was almost seamless. And just for informational purposes, I stayed with the vyvanse for 8 months. And again, this is just my personal experience. Let me know if I can answer anything else or left anything out, I think my notifications are fixed 😊😊😊🤷🏼♂️

Adderall turned me into a lethargic zombie. In fact, it got so bad that I stopped caring about doing anything and just wanted to "zone out". I've tried all the major know ADHD medications throughout the years which all ended up doing the same thing, and none of other them helped. I found that cognitive behavioral therapy to much more helpful.
Have you tried the non stimulant strattera? And do you know what predominant type of adhd you have? And yes CBT is an excellent way to help. Also (and yes even for adults) I’ve found that play therapy is very helpful because it helps you learn how to interact with other people.. especially people that are neurotypical
@@mk_paper_bird Strattera did the same thing. My psychiatrist says I fall into the category of people who experience paradoxical reactions to medications that target the parts of the brain that affect ADHD and that it doesn't matter if it's a stimulant or non-stimulent, my brain chemistry sees them the same.
Maybe the dose was too high, try smaller doses. If you "miss" the zone by too much medication it will overstimulate your brain and overload it.
Hello Dr,my aunt was psychiatrist in Brooklyn during 60s and she used methedrine injections 10 mg I.V sometimes with barbiturates,nit sure about meprobamate,to produce an abreaction in tense, obsessional patients. Such patients often have difficulty in ventilating resentment and hostility, but with the aid of intravenous d-methylamphetamine their feelings may be released with considerable relief of tension and any associated somatic symptoms.I think it was guilines also that time,but suggestine was dexedrine.She also said she was prescrobing MAO-A like Parnate with Ritalin for depresson,with caution,off label,without prroblem..

I got diagnosed with ADHD back in 2018 Im in the UK . Ive been taking Zeniate Methylphenidate over 3 years .first 2 years everything was going really well. But the past year Ive developed a tolerance to it , have been struggling a lot with original ADHD symptoms. Would definitely like a change of medication.
Thank you that was well set out. i was put on Concerta originally for Adult ADHD but moved to Elvance because Concerta was giving palpitation like flurries. Happy with the Elvance 50mg
The shrink decides which one you get, usually starting with the cheapest which would be short acting generic methylphenidate.
I took strattera. helped me immensely with memory.
Doesn't even matter when the doctors won't prescribe any of them to you. So frustrating. I see so many people doing great on these drugs, and somehow I can never get them. My doctors are just way too cautious and don't understand how severely effected I am by ADHD. They keep recommending natural stuff that isn't widely tested or even used by anyone. Months waiting for appointments down the drain.
That is so annoying. I’d freak out. Blame the people that abuse it and snort it bla bla bla. They ruined it for the rest of you.
I would change doctors had that happen and then I found someone who actually wanted to help me and so they did. Good luck
A guy shared he was helped by adderall, work etc. 2 years on it his dr. Wouldnt refill, said he was addicted. Of course Adderall is Highly addictive, there all amphetamines, black box warning can create heart failure or serious life threatening conditions. Has killed 54 guys, boys since 2016 and sickened far more. Amphetamines hurt your body and your brain. Most of our systems just go along. So maybe be gratefull to your cautiou drs. 😛 That being said do the research and u can discover what naturally works for u. I am a mere 4 months late aware , on 4/30 i corrected my adhd eorking Memory to normal naturally. Added l-tyrosine supp. (Now brand cheap) 1500mg initially then 750 to 1500 daily. Upped my Nordic Naturals Omega 3(quality) to 2100mg (does lower bp so catefull) i have used MCT oil powder coffee creamer for 2 years, easy, Ours brains are fats tyrosine etc needs the fats to work! Mct the healthiest fats. Dopamin !!! Thats the quest for adhd..need that dope not the pharma crap. I already have dopamine, tyrosine in diet didnt realize, but no fucking way can afhd affected eat drink enough gotta supplement..so easy. Plus i smoke get nicotine dopamine instant hits but found a nonprescrip pure nicotine delivery product gonna try. Oh yeah and we got stress so add ltheanine essential amino acid thats tea black or green the caffeine with it is proven to boost effect of ltheanine. This for one destresses an precursor amino acid that like falls asleep with stress byt needs to work to kick the tyrosine. I gree up earlier less people but hellu less stressors..and my adhd autism was unknown so no focus on that, world is insane but you are not, just a minority in a neurotypical majority. Ur awesome. Go natural also avoid chemicals and dtes in foods you are likely sensitive. Best wishes to you mate.

Short and sweet. Thank you for doing awesome easy to understand stuff like this. Trying to figure out what the types are and how they work so that i can find the right type for me. RUclips is just a lifesaver now. Just stopped taking Ritalin 80 mg and moved over to Vyvanse 50mg (most likely going to try 70mg) and I'm liking it more. Still kinda unsure if its really working as well as it should tho. Like its working but i have no idea whats considered optimal effect. (im doing this is pair with my doctor, but its just that she has no idea what i should consider a end goal or point)

Hi Doc, I have ADHD, I'm in Japan, and certain medications are illegal here, including Adderall because of drug abuse concerns {don't get me started on the idiocies here in Japan, that's another issue, but anyways}. I just went to a psychiatrist here and he wants me to start with the non stimulants and work my way up to the stimulants if the non stimulants don't work, and he says that using both at the same time {stimulants and non stimulants} is best if non stimulants don't work. Usually it's done the other way around? Anyways I've been started on Intuniv. Wondering your thoughts on that drug and also your thoughts on combining drugs to balance everything out {maybe something to do with too much stimulation can be counterproductive and needs something for the emotional side or needs something to anchor it, etc.}. I notice that when I'm on caffeine my ADHD is super bad, but of course caffeine is a totally different stimulant than the mixed salts. If I tend to go off the track {meaning I either get distracted or I hyperfocus in the wrong directions} while on caffeine, would I also be likely to go off the track with stimulants?

Iv ADD. Betablocker are the worst thing. Maybe for people with ADHD. But im not hyperactive. Its just that EVERYTHING is boring. I go to work as software developer and at the end of the day I have 3 projects open with each 25% work done. Reasom is tasks get boring so fast. I also dont have a hard time concentrating, same story here, its just that everything in life gets boring and i have to force myself. With focalin I can finally work without feeling bored to death. Adderall is now allowed in Switzerland. For good reasons. Its basicly street speed with changed isomer.
Once you on ritalin for a while, trust me I know, changing to concerta, because even though it has the same chemicals compound, it does have a different impact, because it, releases, the same chemical, in different stages, so ritalin and concerta release the same chemical compounds at different stages, ritalin is slow and releases threw out the day, example ritalin LA, Concerta is opposite, so side effects, come about , even though same chemicals, the different release stages, is problematic , this is from personal experience, please correct me if I'm incorrect, but always stick to the meds that work for you

So Ritalin is not an amphetamine like adderall and is different? What about dexedrine? Is that the same or different from adderall? What are the differences? And do they make a long lasting version of dextroamphetamine?

What about Dexedrine?
I heard it’s a long lasting Adderall but without the some of the side effects that adderall has.
And that vyvance is just a different $300 repackaging of Dexedrine..
Have you ever prescribed Dexedrine?
Concerta for me would last 14 to 18 hours. 16 would be normal. I wonder if I'd build up a tolerance to it over time. But it was just in unbearable so I had to stop.
Recently started taking meds. Started on a pretty small dose of short ritalin, it worked really well and I could tell when it was "on" and then it would wear off and I'd feel a drop in energy, but it wasn't long lasting and I'd be fine afterwards. The only issue I had with it (besides the dose being perhaps too little), was that it always gave me a constant mildish headache, which was pretty annoying. Told my Doc and he prescribed me some adderall, but I realized after almost a month that it just doesn't seem to work for me. I get most of the common negative side effects and little to no benefit after a few short hours, even though it's the longer lasting kind. Also, when I first started on it I felt very tense and kinda nauseous for several days. In the end it just made me feel even more tired than normal, with this "foggy" sensation. So I'm not sure if I should even bother trying Vyvanse, since it's basically the same chemical. I'll probably just try again with ritalin, see if the headache doesn't come back.
Interesting; I used to get headaches before I got on Ritalin. Almost never afterwards. Did your headaches went away once you were off Ritalin?

@@andraskovacs517 they did. It was the Ritalin causing the headache for sure. I ended up trying Vyvanse and it works, but most importantly, doesn't make me feel awful. Dose is too small right now but my doctor will up it when I see him again in a few weeks.
Update, I've been on Vyvanse for many months now and it works great for me. Definitely feel more motivated and productive, also it helps me wake up in the morning and get going. I miss coffee, but overall it's been very helpful. I can also usually stop taking it without any significant issues, besides being lazy and kinda foggy for that day.
How do you get diagnosed with ADHD? I'm 40 and always had issues concentrating.
Can you go over the way absorption is different for each stimulant medication? I have Ulcerative Colitis and it seems I can't find one that works for me anymore. Adderall used to be great.

What about Modafinil?
I was prescibed Ritalin 10mg. It works a bit. I barely notice the effects, other than less need to distract myself. Overall it's kinda mild and it's a little annoying having to take it multiple times a day at work, especially when I do long hours.
You should talk to your prescriber. Maybe you need a higher dose or need a long acting version such a concerta

I honestly don’t care all that much I something is FDA approved. It doesn’t mean it’s safe, and it kind of tricks us into not thinking about what the drug is and what it does and how it affects us. Not that it means FDA is false or anything, just that It doesn’t really matter to me. I just want to know what it does and how it can hurt me how it can help me and how I can tolerate and recover and mitigate negative effects.
I want to switch from concerta to Vyvanse, I'm have to ask my doctor if it possible and if its wise to try other to see if they work better
I switched because of the hunger problems, but it didn't help sadly. My mood and things of that nature are better thsn they have ever been though!
I was on adder all for years and it worked great for me. When o moved from Tennessee to Kentucky I seen very quickly that these doctors up here in Kentucky are idiots about medicines. All they want to prescribe people is anti depressants and Suboxone. Can’t find a so called doctors anywhere here in Kentucky who isn’t scared to death to prescribe the medicine that someone needs. I’m 45 years old now and not an abuser of medicines. Just want medicines that I’ve took for over 16 years that works. And trying to find one online is as hard as finding on here in kentucky
What’s the highest Adderall XR dose allowed for adults? I’m at 40 daily, so I’m afraid to ask my doctor because I know they tend to be cautious with this and I don’t want him to take me off the medicine for a while if I reached the maximum dose permitted.
I would assume that’s the highest? Is it not working? 40 is incredibly high.
@@apdroidgeek1737 It says online that 40 is generally the highest dose for ADHD, but I’m wondering if any exceptions exist. Especially since the highest dose for narcolepsy is 60. And no, not working too well after being on it for nearly 10 years. lol
40 is not the highest does lol, I was once given 70 mg vyvance and 30mg adderal IR, go to a good psyche, my lawyer friend takes 30ir in morning 30ir afternoon and 30 ir at night … that’s 90 mg !!!!! You leave the psyche and then doctors like APRNS, who don’t specialize in mental disorders will say 40 is all I can do ! Which yes sorta. Just go to a psychiatrist……. Everyone metabolizes differently. I lost weight and for some reason now I cam easily take 3 30xr’s a day. It’s aggravating when you only have 40 mg a day. So needless to say. There are some breaks in between.

Are Ritalin products more mild with less side effects ?
To simply answer - yes, ritalin is a partial agonist stimulant so its learning curve is somewhat easier to learn & adapt. However, ritalin also has sub-types as mentioned & which medication is right for you, is dependent on how effectively your symptoms are handled. Another point which should be discussed with doctor, is any other co-morbid condition & supposedly conflicting medication for the said condition. Lastly, sleep, diet and exercise are major helpful factors that help these medication to work. Having said all this, no medication is without side-effects & these things are best discussed with a medically qualified professional in person, so that the person can derive maximum quality of life from them.
Ritalin is usually 4 kids but if sensitive get that ..its be better ny ways

At 56 years old I have just been diagnosed. My doctor put me on Vyvanse and it works great for me. However, 2 weeks in, I developed an allergy to the medication and developed a rash and terrible itching. It’s so frustrating. I’m finally a normal, functioning adult and I can’t take the meds any longer :(

Are stimulant medications safe for a 55 yr old? My doctor's is a little hesitant to put me on them because of my age but my heart checked out and everything's great so I'm not sure what the concern is.
