I’m not sure if you check the comments on old videos, but I wanted to thank you for uploading this series. It inspired me to try my hand at map making for CS:GO. I tried a handful of projects but could never finish any. But then I got into Super Mario 64 rom hacking and realized that Sketchup is pretty similar to hammer, and those skills I picked up transferred over. I’ve released a handful of hacks now and I have this series thank for it in a really weird way.
Dude, you have to make another map. 1. This one is amazing. 2. These videos are great to watch. 3. You are the best person on earth. Also, just finished watching the series for the 10th time. I love this map and the videos.
I know this is an old series but every once in a while I come across this series and it always gets me in the mood to start making maps for Doom or VRChat again. I genuinely love watching your mapping videos, it's awesome seeing someone else's workflow and though process layed out this way.
Not really, you can start a SP map with small chunks of combat areas, nail down where you want enemy spawns and what weapons the player should have at that point, and then connect all those little bits with the story development and weapon/ammo/health pickups. Should turn out pretty fun that way!
Personally I don't work back from the end unless I know exactly what I want to happen at the end and haven't figured out how to 'get there' yet. I usually just build linearly from the beginning so I can get the storytelling right.
+Tobias Janderå What? There are hundreds and maybe even thousand of Source singleplayer games(and even more custom maps for existing singleplayer games) how is mapping for Source not popular? Just because there aren't many tutorials doesn't mean it isn't popular, it must be becuase most people find mapping for Source easy or they follow Valve Developer Community's tutorials.
FYI, I'm using this playlist as a crash course for noobs who want to make maps (not even for counterstrike, just in general for any game), to realize how the proper process to get to a good map goes. Thank you very much for making this series.
Like... guys who think slapping assets together to make for pretty pictures is what map design is? Boom, link to this playlist. Guys who have no idea at all, but want to make maps? Boom, link to this playlist. Whoever who comes to me and says a sentence containing the keywords "map" and "make"? Boom, link to this playlist. First letter of any sentence of anyone gets out of their mouth? Boom, link to this playlist =D
Going to watch this series back tonight. So nostalgic. These videos inspired me to learn how to use Hammer. Not that I ever got really good at it, or made anything significant, but I sure as hell felt inspired. And the closest thing I could play at the time was 1.6 anyways, picking up CSGO would come a year later. This takes me back.
Why so many dislikes? EDIT: Came back to this to explain, he had 12 likes and 7 dislikes very quickly. Obviously by now there was a good influx of likes.
Ooh, exciting! I started following you a long time ago because of your mapping tutorials, and now we get to look at a making of? This is great! Keep up the good work.
I would really love it if you made another series like this, since i feel not the whole series got the love and attention the first couple episodes did :D
I would just like to say that this is what inspired me to start making a map for TF2. This is my first time mapping, and I would like to thank you for being an inspiration to me. :)
Always stands out to me in CS:GO's defuse maps is that the bomb, is not really a threat, it explodes and can kill or hurt you. But the buildings, stay intact! we already know that the sdk does allow for destructible blocks so why do few people try it?
3kliksphilip And that was on a very old version of the source engine, with all the upgrades they made to the engine for CS:GO I was at first expecting them to be improved and enhanced, yet they took a step backwards. Perhaps these features will be revisited in future updates or made much more functional in Source2
Removing a lot of physics objects was a good idea IMO- in source you got stuck on them all the time, which is hardly something that a professional player would want to happen to them.
Anyone interested in mapping should definitely consider what he says about playtesting as soon as possible. Most importantly for me was getting the right _scale_ for things. A map may be perfect on paper, but you need to make sure the area isn't too spread out or overly compact. Even if a map design is theoretically perfect, you need to shrink or expand it proportionally, even if you don't really need to change the size of individual areas (you will). Always be iterative. Change one thing (like a single bomb site) at a time and save them under new names de_sparity_a1,a2,a3, etc. so you can use them as reference, go back to older versions if you don't like the changes you've made, and simply for archiving. It's always great to be able to go back, see how your map has changed, and reference the layout for major changes so you can do things like keeping an angle the same or retaining the timing to a site.
Thanks Philip, you made me create 2 maps. I wanted to create a defuse map from nothing,it became an aim map, then I worked on it,and it is complete,i made the map so it looks good,in the editing phase after every minor change there was a 10 man playtesting, then we decided to what could be improved. Aim_Napoy i think is the best of my maps.
Respect...I'm just finish today my first 1v1 map xD A competitive map is a very long and hard way...idea, level design, balancing, detail to beauty, etc... OMG... You just a GREAT MAPPER !
I loved this map in Smokers Lounge servers and I was always the one who voted for this map, especially during summer cuz it reminded me of winter and Christmas. Didnt know u make it. LOL
Great Video! This is the fifth time I watch it. But now that I create Maps myself, I have to disagree with you in one point: I think planning a map on paper is actually a good thing. Especially if you dont have much mapping expirience because when I was about to create my first map i just didnt know how to start... Of course the Layout wont feel the same in game but I think the best you can do is to plan your map on paper and build it at the same time to get a feeling for how the level will play. This also is a good solution for the problem with height variation when planning on paper.
Excuse me why hasn’t this been added to CSGO yet? I mean it is made by the most experienced mapper and it has appealing details, balanced timings and fun to play!
thanks. I hope this series will help me, cause I always have the problem that I start a map and cant finish it. I think I actually had some good ideas and unfortunately they are wasted now, or are they ... anyway. next time Ill try this approach
Weird how there was a map (de_Radix) that was accepted into the game that looks very similar to de_sparity while the only bad thing about de_sparity was the visuals
(Please reply, I'm trying to make a map myself) So from what I understood, you want us to make the entire map first? How is this a plan? Here are the notes I wrote down from what you said in the video: Planning - Make mid FIRST (like a tiny standalone map). After that, add bomb sites one at a time as desperate maps also. Ensure they're fun to play. After that you can add additional areas. Stretch or compress parts of the map to get things right ( for entry to key areas like mid, A or B). Only then add details and TEST OFTEN! What did I get wrong here? Can someone help improve my plan because it sounds like the plan is telling me how to create the whole map here and now.
Great that you are making all these videos! I've been making maps for a looong time, but haven't yet released a single one. Much of it is due to issues with final touches; adding models/overlays and getting the lighting/shadows/tonemapping right. I'm also afraid of getting the final compiling/map-packing wrong with files missing for people downloading it. Will you include some of these things in this series?
I think a good take would be to make something awfully simple, test it and figure out what you want to add onto it, both balance wise and for the sake of adding more. When you are done and satisfied, peel away what's unnecessary, or doesn't fit.
i found it strange that my first map is in the workshop's first page 0_0 my first map is terrebel compared with my maps, thanks 3kliksphilip for your tutorials :D
I have an issue with the steam workshop. I made a map that I published, but when I wanna play it through workshop maps inside cs:go it simply doesn’t load. It just stays in the loading screen. I can play the map through console and a friend downloaded the map, and he could get in through workshop maps. This means that I cannot play the map with friends without them hosting. And I’m the one doing the console stuff.
I would actually be interested in helping you play test your maps but I don't know on what server you test them. Did you make a video on this already? If so I guess I didn't watch it or I didn't pay attention to what you were saying :P
I had a really fun idea for a map It sucked. But then I started again it was different but way more fun. It isn't finished I'm still working everything out
please make a series in which you make the map and you record it while you do it. Aswell as adding some footage from testing the map and so on. Please I think this would help out any mapper plus it would be interesting to watch.
3kliksphilip And what if you stream while mapping? I've seen someone else doing it a looong time ago. And it was very interesting becouse you could ask questions about the little things why you do things that way, and you can learn a lot from it. it was very interesting to watch. And i believe that the interaction with viewers can add value to your map too.
pepijn willekens That is a great idea man, I would watch a stream like that! I made few maps for Call of Duty 2 (WW2 Game not the new bs) and I would really like to get into mapping for CS:GO so you streaming would be very useful for me and many others.
Ohh come on man ;d Just dont think about it when you do it. Before I streamed a CoD2 Tournament and about 100 people watched me commentate and stuff. Its actually really fun when you get into it :) Sadly I cant stream because of the british internet... 0.7mb/s Up...

He does lol
Genuinely some of my favorite videos on RUclips. I hope you make a new map for CS2 and document it like this
I legitimately can't stop watching this series over and over. Help.
Same, but I'm making mine while I listen to him. 0_0
I'm not even making mine yet fml
Ouch, I just got mine into beta just there so hopefully my addiction will be over soon...
Whats it called?
Watched about 9 times:P
Dude, you have to make another map.
1. This one is amazing.
2. These videos are great to watch.
3. You are the best person on earth.
Also, just finished watching the series for the 10th time. I love this map and the videos.
Same, I've watched this series so many times, and every time it inspires me to boot up hammer again
im really glad im not the only one who watches this series everyone once and awhile, i also agree that he should make another map/map series
How many times now? It’s 30 for me.....
Please send help
Agreed. Philip plz read
I know this is an old series but every once in a while I come across this series and it always gets me in the mood to start making maps for Doom or VRChat again. I genuinely love watching your mapping videos, it's awesome seeing someone else's workflow and though process layed out this way.
I search it up every couple months when I have the urge I can’t keep track how many times I’ve watched this series
I find this mapping style pretty inspiring. Though its hard to translate it into SinglePlayer mapping.
Not really, you can start a SP map with small chunks of combat areas, nail down where you want enemy spawns and what weapons the player should have at that point, and then connect all those little bits with the story development and weapon/ammo/health pickups. Should turn out pretty fun that way!

Kaleido There are not many tutorials for this since Singleplayer Mapping for Source is not that popular. Maybe that will change when we get Source 2?
Source 2 hammer is SO SEXY! Can't wait to get rid of this outdated hammer editor
+Tobias Janderå

I hope you do another series like this one day
One of my all-time favorite series on RUclips. Thanks for the incredible details and explanations of your process.
I love coming back to this video series. Even after 6-7 years since i first watch it, its so fun and entertaining to watch.
dude, thanks for bringing up the pen and paper thing. Too many people recommend that and it's great for other things but not map design.
De_motivates
I'm in the process of developing my map for the MapCore + /r/globaloffensive contest, and there's no better motivator than listening to this series.
How’d it go?
i love this video series! genuinely looking at this, i have made maps, improving as i made more
FYI, I'm using this playlist as a crash course for noobs who want to make maps (not even for counterstrike, just in general for any game), to realize how the proper process to get to a good map goes.

No regrets
this series made me start mapping lol
Petition for Philip to make a new map and make it into another series
Ooh, exciting! I started following you a long time ago because of your mapping tutorials, and now we get to look at a making of? This is great! Keep up the good work.
I've watched this whole series 3 times now.
It's so inspiring.
Philip changed so much
I would really love it if you made another series like this, since i feel not the whole series got the love and attention the first couple episodes did :D
Welcome to the new game show: *How* *Many* *Times* *Will* *I* *Rewatch* *These*
Dude I’ve easily watched this like 20 times. I also have made a few maps that I’m pretty happy with. Coincidence???? Probably...
I would just like to say that this is what inspired me to start making a map for TF2. This is my first time mapping, and I would like to thank you for being an inspiration to me. :)
god i love this series, I rewatch it all the time
Your video is so immersive that at 0:20 , I tried tilt my head to look straight instead of a bird's eye view lmao.
Always stands out to me in CS:GO's defuse maps is that the bomb, is not really a threat, it explodes and can kill or hurt you. But the buildings, stay intact! we already know that the sdk does allow for destructible blocks so why do few people try it?
Optimisation. Lots of PCs don't like real-time physics. Also it's a bit of a waste of time really.
3kliksphilip

My favorite series ever.
Love the map bro, makes me want to learn how to make maps :)
tip: to an objective (bomb site or spawn), like in de_dust2, always have 3 routes that lead and intersect with other routes.
it's on css now, great map
I'm watching this Playlist for the 4th time now. I do lern something everytime!
Every time I work on a new map or fix old maps I watch this series
Yes I have watched this series over double digit times and yes I will keep watching it
Every time I go to make a map in hammer, I watch these videos. This is probably my fourth of fifth time watching the series.
Finally found someone who is as addicted as me :D
or as addicted as me
We need another series like this!!
can't believe this series is 9 years old already
bro i can tell you something i think you are the best map creator for me
i want to play this on competitive... can valve actually add this to competitive pool?
YEa, Valve should REALLY branch out and get more maps, since Dust and Mirage get old and lame after a few CENTURIES
+556FATHOMS There are lots of other maps for competitive, I for example can't get enough of Cache
***** Cache is jjfisdnldnl to me
Hopefully in the next overdue operation.
+B Bag NASA flat-earth cover-up conspiracy confirmed!

Definitely an interesting way of creating a map layout. I might test that with my 2nd map. But my priority for now is finishing the 1st map.
love that end number
4. 2. 0
I like this map. Good job.
Awesome series :) wish more people did this.
Now this is what I was waiting for!
Now all I have to do is actually stop being lazy...
Found your videos today, gotta say that you are going to be one of my most favorite subscriber already! cx
Are you making an other map soon? Love this videos.

3kliksphiliph is the most freestayl mapper
Excuse me why hasn’t this been added to CSGO yet? I mean it is made by the most experienced mapper and it has appealing details, balanced timings and fun to play!
you should remake this in cs2
3kliksphiliph last map was made in 2014 so yeah I dont think he is going to remake soon
2024 anyone remember watching these as they released? Hopefully we get a De_Sparity CS2 edition!
THE FIRST VERSION LOOKS LIKE BLACK MESA!!! WHOOO!!!
Amazing series :D
Its like you know what videos I like. :P
You sir are awesome!
i wish there were infinite videos like this...

the video was nuts!!
i really loved playing balfour
Very interisting m8 really like how you explain things.. I hope my maps will be good. (subscribed)
Is de_sparyti and de_kyrenia in cs go workshop?! Love those maps
Please make a new map. You're very good at it.
Like 15th time watching this series.
I just made a part 1 of my series where i also make a map which was heavily inspired by you.
instead of the steep ramp around mid, you could try making entire middle portion of the map a steady incline..?
3rd time watching this series.
i found it strange that my first map is in the workshop's first page 0_0 my first map is terrebel compared with my maps, thanks 3kliksphilip for your tutorials :D

Wait, 2:06 Gwalior at 2nd?...
I had a really fun idea for a map
It sucked.
But then I started again it was different but way more fun.
It isn't finished I'm still working everything out
I love your music
valve shoud release a easier map editor! it would be great!
This is pretty easy
NordiLand it's actually as easy as it gets
They did that for Portal 2
i used to watch this when i was 13
Philip, on the buildings how do you get the wooden beams as separators? Thanks

Facecams are overrated. I can't imagine rather seeing your face over the beautiful maps in progress.
