    This is quite informative. I would add a few quick things from my work experience at a rental car agency. Some companies do not offer unlimited miles, but do you best to negotiate to get the maximum amount of mileage allowed. With most companies, mileage allowances, rates, and even some fees are negotiable so see what you can do to get your costs down. It pays to put a smile on too! :)
    Regarding insurance, even if you insurance policy and credit card covers it, you will still be responsible for the deductible in most cases because rental agencies go through your insurance first. I recommend taking the collision coverage even if your primary insurer and credit card “cover you”.
    Additionally, you are responsible for the “revenue lost” while that vehicle is getting repaired if you damage it. This is typically the daily rental rate times how many days it sits in the shop. Some insurers don’t cover this and you are responsible for it.
    Just thought I’d add in my two cents.
    All in all this is a FANTASTIC video with great advice. Thank you.

    In regards to rental companies, I strongly recommend that everyone avoid Enterprise and their affiliates. From my own and others personal experience, this company has been known to scam customers into thinking that they damaged their rental cars and try to stick you with a bill for them. It's part of their business model folks. I had to escalate my issue all the way up to the COO of the company. They dropped the damage claim against me immediately. So it pays to push back against these unethical corporations. But save yourself a headache and avoid Enterprise altogether. BTW, Nice Video Brad!

      That is why I recommend you ALWAYS take pictures of the car AND make sure any and all damage is noted BEFORE you leave the lot. Thanks, Ken. I am glad you got something out of it!

    Yes, you can mention me and the fact that I'm now back from my trip after renting from Thrifty. These people gave me what I thought was a heck of a good deal, two weeks for $334.20, plus upgraded me to a Dodge Caravan, a great vehicle which got me to Red Deer on the first day. Since I didn't find a car to buy at my destination, I'm quite glad that I didn't do a one way rental. To do so would have cost me an extra $150 drop off fee, as I was told. Just a couple of criticizms about Thrifty. They rented me a vehicle with a slow leak in the right front tire. The tire warning light on the dash was on but I didn't know what that meant when I picked up the vehicle. I think the service man should have caught that one. Finally, in Edmonton, after a couple of stops for air, I had the tire fixed using my BCAA card. Also, I couldn't call their Vancouver office to tell them about it, only their international 1-800 number. When I returned the van, their downtown Vancouver location on Seymour in an underground parking garage was difficult to access, especially with a No Right Turn sign off of Dunsmuir. The city put that stupid sign up since the cyclists are now directing traffic at city hall. That's one sign you have to ignore in order to return a vehicle to Thrifty.

      Thanks for letting me use that comment. You did get a great deal on that rental. Sounds like you still had issues with it, though. Sorry to hear about that, but it sounds like you had a decent trip in general. :)

    In the UK, we can get annual car hire insurance that covers much more than the extra insurance the car hire companies offer, like tyres and windscreen. If you hire for more than a week or so, it's cheaper.

    Thanks for all those great tips, they were very helpful. It's been my experience that most car rental companies charge 10X the amount for a one way because they claim they have to transport the car back. I know that's a lie because there's so many cars there with out of state license plates that they rent out to the locals.

    • @LetsGoRoadTrippin
      @LetsGoRoadTrippin  6 лет назад +1

      Sometimes you can find one-way rentals cheap. Just depends on the supply and demand for that area at that time.

    I'm certainly glad that I found your video just before I plan to rent a car for a road trip. Hertz totally messed up my reservation. When I went to pick the car up, they said it was canceled. Instead, I had extended it. They also had the pickup time wrong. So no car from Hertz. Now I'm about to try Thrifty. One thing I don't like is giving a date for the return of the car. It could be a 10 day trip but to be on the safe side and not rush myself, I said I'd take it for two weeks. But if you bring it back early, they ding you an extra 15 bucks a day. But at least they gave me the best price I could find. I'd also like to know about one way rentals in case I find a vehicle I'd like to buy at my destination.

    • @LetsGoRoadTrippin
      @LetsGoRoadTrippin  8 лет назад

      +Jim Ervin I am glad you found this, too! Sorry about Hertz, they used to be a quality company, but I am starting to hear bad things about them. One way rentals can get very expensive. The biggest factor in price is if they have too many cars, or not enough cars. Too many cars, cheaper, not enough cars, very expensive, or they may not even have one for you. I have seen it happen both ways. Enjoy the road trip!!! Drive safe.

I have a question: My daughter says that if you search for rental cars with your computer set to "Incognito," the web sites won't keep jacking the prices up every time you try a new search. I've noticed that a cheap rental "disappears" when I try to look for it again after opening new tabs. Is there any validity to this?

    Here's a cautionary tip you might want to add to your excellent list. If you're renting a car in FL there are roads which have tolls but no way to pay the toll except by transponder. You may think that you don't need the expensive transponder because you'll just pay the tolls, but you can't! Our agent at Dollar did not tell us that even though we discussed it in front of him. The result was a bill in the mail for our $6.61 in tolls plus Dollar's "Administrative Fee" (aka scam) of $90. I don't know if other companies do something similar but one needs to be aware of the problem.

    • @LetsGoRoadTrippin
      @LetsGoRoadTrippin  8 лет назад

      You bring up an excellent point. I had not encountered those tolls until well after this video was up on the internet. I was in my personal car at the time, and got a bill from FL, and paid it. In Miami, there are tolls that are by license plate only, and the only option to get around those tolls is by going on side streets which can add hours to your drive at the wrong time of day. DEFINITELY talk to your rental company, and MAKE SURE that you are aware of what your options are if you are going into a state that has toll roads. Make sure to pick the best option that fits you. Here are the states I know about that have Toll roads or toll bridges, Please add to the list if I miss one (or two):
      NY, NJ, WV, VA, PA, OH, IN, IL, OK, KS, FL, CA, MD, LA.
      Is that all of them?
      Thanks again for bringing this to everyone's attention. I think Dollar is being unreasonable. I used Budget, and got charged an admin fee, I forget what it was, but it was NOT THAT crazy.

    • @dduggan47
      @dduggan47 8 лет назад +1

      This is over a year old but it lists 26 states plus Puerto Rico:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_toll_roads_in_the_United_States

    • @dduggan47
      @dduggan47 8 лет назад +3

      I've done a little research. You can call SunPass or go online to sunpass.com and create an account and purchase a transponder for around $20. Once you have it it's good forever. If you use it and are then billed by the rental company you can call SunPass and they promise to get the intercede on your behalf. Be sure to purchase the portable model because the stick on ones will, obviously, be stuck to the rental car and you might not be able to get it off. SunPass will also work in Georgia and North Carolina.
      Also, Congress has required all toll systems to be compatible by October 2016. If you have a transponder from another state, bring it with you to FL and it should work. If you buy a Sunpass, it will work in other states as well.

I was unaware so i had to pay, now I am visiting US back and i wont be having my own insurance obviously. What least amount of insurance should I have to keep me safe atleast and not cost me much? Thanks in advance.

    Which rental companies are the best, Budget, Hertz, Enterprise? Which ones would you recommend

    • @LetsGoRoadTrippin
      @LetsGoRoadTrippin  8 лет назад +3

      +Second Story All three of those are good companies. From those, I use Budget about 95% of the time. I would use Enterprise, but they do not allow me to use a Debit Card for the rental (Budget and Hertz both do). Hertz is a good company, but I am not impressed with their cars.

    i disagree about smoking. If youre driving it for less than a few weeks the smoke wont do anything. Ive rented like 6+ cars and smoked in all and nobody ever have a problem(on my first one the guy asked me to clean the ash). You just want to not smoke for a few hours before turning it in AND you want to make sure to clean all the ash from the back seat (the wind blows it there).
    The way they catch smokers is they just look for ash in hidden places, so you just want to make sure to clean all of it
    Also the price of cars can vary significantly based on days. For example, I once rented a 2016 Mustang in 2015 for only $50 a day. But they had that deal only for 2 days. The rest I had to pay something like $150. What I find is that as with airplane tickets, the more you look the better deal you'll find
    Also most companies only take credit cards, not debit cards. However, if you keep looking, you should find one that will take a debit card. However, be careful when booking a car online/on phone with a debit card because they might not always tell you they only accept credit, so when you book a car and then you come in to show your card, they will so nope we cant do it and worst of all is they would have had already charged the debit card (this will be reimbursed but will take some time)

    Nice and useful Video, I am going to have my road trip in the US this December (~20 days) with my wife. Do you have any suggestion on which car size I should rent ? Compact/Intermediate/Full. What kind of Insurance I should buy ? My trip is around CA, AZ, NV, and UT area. Thanks in advance :)

    • @LetsGoRoadTrippin
      @LetsGoRoadTrippin  7 лет назад

      The car will depend on so many things. How many people, how much are you bringing, how much actual driving, is gas mileage important? I assume it is just the 2 of you, 2 large pieces of luggage, maybe 2 carryon sized bags, average driving, and comfort is more important than gas mileage. I would look at intermediate size like a Ford Fusion or Chevy Malibu.

    • @teerawathungsasut4601

      +3214214 I have not rented from Dollar before. I know on Budget and on Enterprise they both have a separate page that asks you about the extras like insurance, GPS, etc. I also think that is how Hertz does it. so, you may have to scroll down the page, or continue to the next page to see the options for your rental. Look at those. You have to read the details of the insurance and determine if it is what you are looking for. I hope this helps, have fun in Minneapolis / St Paul!

    Some fantastic tips for anybody hiring a vehicle! Insurance is of the utmost importance. Whether hiring a car from a local company, like 4x4vehiclehire.co.uk/4x4-hire-cheshire/, or an national chain always review the insurance documents. The majority of car hire providers will make it pain free, but as I said always read the fine print. Thanks for the great tips and I wish everybody a good road trip!

      Do you mean a specific car or a rental company? I would just not get the smallest car from any company. It usually has the least amenities, and is generally not fun to drive (my opinion). Rental company? Budget, Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, any of the big names are decent. STAY AWAY from SIXT, I have heard bad things about them.

      +Burim Dragaqina That is hard. Prices are highly dictated by location, and what the demand is for that location. You can always have discounts through other memberships like Costco or Sam's club (I think they have them). But I don't know of any secret. I have ordered online and then called and asked for a better rate. That will work about 50% of the time.

    • @LetsGoRoadTrippin
      @LetsGoRoadTrippin  8 лет назад

      that is an awesome road trip! with the dog, talk to a rental company and find out their policies. it shouldn't be a problem, but make sure ypu are informed. one way rentals can be pricey, there are a lot of factors that determine rates. if there is a big event or convention when you are leaving, prices are high. they don't really want the cars to leave. inventory is another factor, if they have too many cars, it can be cheap to get one. maybe just keep an eye out for the dates you are leaving, and rent when it is low enough. give your self a minimum of 5 days for this trip, unless you like to drive really hard. 7 days would be a good pace, too.

    Not all employees understand all the company policies, I rented a Thrifty from LAX for 2 months to drive far and wide. I was told after 30 days I was to go to a Thrifty office to have the car serviced which was fair enough as after 3000 miles or so the car may need a lube of a tire or two. I called in at Boston MA for the obligitory monthly check=up. The employee there got upset that I had done so many miles , well how else am I going to get from CA to MA and said I was being hit with a huge drop off fee. I argued that I had hired the car for 2 months and Boston was only a service point not a drop off. After a big arguement he agreed to waive the I considered illegal drop off fee but said there would be the return drop off fee at LAX. Fortunately the manager at LAX saw things my way and the drop off fee was waived as the car had been returned to the original point of hire. Would I rent from Thrifty again, yes I would but if the hire is longer than a month we have to come to a clear understanding that no drop fee applies when the car is returned to it's original location. By the way the fellow in Boston was wrong company policy is the no drop off fee applies if the car is returned to the original point of hire.

      @LetsGoRoadTrippin  8 лет назад

      Wow, glad it all ended up the right way. I hope the Boston guy learned something! I have not done a long term rental like that. Would you mind sharing how much the final bill was? I understand if you don't want to share that information. :-)

    Return empty or full- Never pick the return empty option that save money-you'll never actually manage to return the tank truly empty as most cars will have 1/5th of a tank left even on absolute empty.

    2:20 Never let somebody else(friend) drive the car, evenif he is a taxidriver, only those persons named in the car rental contract are insured. If sb else wrecks the car this can cost You the entire value of the car unless it was robbed for example from You by force on a traffic signal by a stranger! It might easily cost You USD 25.000 or whatever the value of the car is in case of total damage!

My OPINION is that it may save you some money on each the flight, hotel, and rental to bundle it together. what do you think about renting a car a airport verses renting away form airportl

    • @LetsGoRoadTrippin
      @LetsGoRoadTrippin  8 лет назад

      +Linda Springwater Airports are very convenient. HOWEVER, you will be charged extra fees. Usually called an "airport" fee, they go to the airport. It is a bit of an annoyance to me, but I usually rent from those locations, as it is VERY easy to get public transportation to those locations. If I have my choice, I prefer to save the money and rent from non-airport locations.

    Hey...Really Nice video about car rental...I have few queries..if you could help..it will be of great help...
    I am trying to book car in Europe through AutoEurope as I am getting good deal (and actual provider is Hertz) ...I am opting for Zero Deductible Insurance which includes Loss Damage Waiver, Theft Protection etc...Does it mean that if I buy this Zero Deductible plan..I will not be harassed for minor scratches/dents etc. here and there??
    Further...I am renting a car in Belgium..is there any restrictions/extra fees for travelling to France, Swz, Germany or other Western European countries as long as I am dropping off the car at same location...

    • @LetsGoRoadTrippin
      @LetsGoRoadTrippin  8 лет назад

      +Navjot Sekhon Those are great questions. You will want to talk to the car rental company about going to other countries. I have no idea about renting international. My GUESS is that Zero deductible would be if you have an accident, there is no out of pocket expense for you. It may cover the minor scratches/dents. Again, you will want to double check when you pick up the car. Make sure you fully understand what the rental covers, and DOESN'T cover.

    Fox Rental Car July 15, 2016 - Waited 2 1/2 hours standing in line with 20 others at Seattle airport. No one would tell us what the problem was and we missed 2 business meetings and lost $$$$! Rude guy named "Matt" finally said he would have to take my credit card to back and call it in manually because computers were down (that took 30 min. alone) . He never once offered an apology, explanation, discount or looked at me!!!! He told me they would be giving me a "comparable" vehicle which was nothing like the Jeep Cherokee we had rented. Folks were all mad and their lack of caring only made it worse. The car was a basic plain jane with not enough room for our luggage.
    Computer glitches I understand but their lack of customer service makes me know I won't be a returning customer!

    • @LetsGoRoadTrippin
      @LetsGoRoadTrippin  6 лет назад +1

      In my opinion, you probably won't get charged for minor scratches, but each company is different, and each location may even do things differently within one company. I have never scratched or dented a rental, but I have picked them up with minor scratches and dents. They don't seem to fix those all the time. That is why you want to take pictures of the rental and note all scratches and dents before you sign anything for that car. The collision damage waiver and liability seems to be for bigger accidents that cause real damage. Sorry I can't give you a better answer than this.

    about rental cars.... about insurance even if you do have insurance through your credit card or your personal insurance, there are deductables and you have to pay before they pay you. Also, they only pay up to 30 to 50 thousand per claim. for only 30 dollars a day it's worththe 100 percent coverage you can walk away from. also, roadside for 7.99 a day its worth it. Even if you have AAA. AAA only tows you a certain amount of miles, and if you have a flat tire, they will change it, but you still have to pay for the tire. Not worth it. if you purchase the roadside for 7.99 a day, you will not be responsible for any tow fees at all or the tire. it's worth it in my book.
