    Take as much video and as many photos of the car as you can before driving it off the lot. And make sure you can show as many angles of the car as possible.

    I’ve only rented once with Enterprise and it was smooth .. We rented the car from Austin Texas to Colorado and it was a nice 2018 Camry ... I always carry extra batteries for my cell phone , water , some food . I took pictures of the car and mileage and recorded what the car looked like before hitting the road .

    I think a first aid kit is very important. Not only for the car, but for traveling in general. I keep a few bandaids, neosporn , antiseptic wipes, a razor with the handle cut in half to remove hair for better bandaid adhesion , and tweezers in a small tin. A small roll of toilet paper is also good policy to keep with you in general.

    I found out about the Hertz AAA Young Driver Fee waiver and it’s saved me so much money. It’s usually a win-win since AAA typically has the lowest daily rate also. Being a car buff helps, but I usually tell people to do a little research before picking a car. For example when grabbing an economy or compact, the Nissans typically have more cargo room than other options. I also look at tires.. you won’t believe how many cars have mix matched tires with different brands on the front and rear.

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  6 лет назад

      Great tips, Brandon! Thanks for sharing. Having that extra cargo room can really be useful, so I'll definitely be looking out for Nissan on my next rental. 👍

    Don't smoke in the car. That includes weed. The rental will charge you from $100 to $350 to clean the car. Detailing the car cost the rental company time and money. Car can't be rented. In car air filter change. Carpet seats , headliner need to be cleaned. Even when your return the car and the contract ends. They will still charge you. Don't try and hide damage you caused. You will still be charged if you try and hide damage. If you want to exchange your car during the rental period. Most companies will do this only if something is wrong with the car. Most new cars have a TPMS . That lets you know when a tire is low. If you want to exchange the car. Drive the car near the rental return place and remove air until TPMS sensor alerts a low tire. Then take it back and show the low tire pressure light. They will exchange the car due to the light. No one in the return area will question you,

      @@40hours56 I work at a rental company, believe it or not their is no mechanic, we the employees make the decision if the car will be taken to a vendor such as Firestone/mavis/pepboys etc., I’ve given customers the same car back after they brought it in with a simple tire pressure light, which we can easily resolve by adding the correct PSI level, only time is if it’s check engine light the car goes to the dealer. We will only switch you out if we have extra vehicles available, or send u to another location if we do not. Things which u may get a different vehicle are if the vehicle had smoke odor, cracked windshield, bad tires, or issues with technology of the car such as a frozen Home Screen or charging outlets not working. But all of that depends if we have extra vehicles, so it’s never a guaranteed switch. Best advice to call the closest branch before coming in to make sure u don’t waste your time.

      No problem! I usually stay with the larger rental companies (Budget, Hertz, Avis, Enterprise), and I've heard horror stories about some of the smaller rental companies. That being said, I've never used a smaller car rental company, so I can't really say it's from personal experience.
      I've been using Avis a lot lately, but only because they have an arrangement with the Sapphire Reserve. Otherwise, I'd probably just shop around for the best rate among the big car rental companies. 😊

    I reserved a car with BUDGET 5 BUSINESS days ahead of time. The day before I had to pick up the car, I called again just to be sure it was still available. They said that the car was ready and everything was fine. When I got to the agency to pick up the car, I was told that the car I reserved was not available. They upgraded me to a bigger car and told me that the price would remain the same. It was clear that i would not pay for the bigger car they gave me. No extra charge. I trusted them. I trusted their customer's service and staff. When I got my visa statement, iI realized that they charged me for the bigger car they gave. WHAT A SCAM!

    So when I go to Mexico they tell me third party liability is mandatory to every car agency that I go to. Do you know if that is true?

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  6 лет назад +2

      It's definitely possible. While your credit card might protect you from damages to your vehicle, it doesn't cover you for any damages to other cars and property. Though if you have a personal auto insurance policy, check to see if it covers you for third party liability on international trips. Some do and some don't, and even if you have it, some international car agencies insist on it since they can't be bothered whether the insurance is valid. It's definitely complicated! 😬

    What’s the best credit card for rental international?

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  5 лет назад

      It's a tough question. Each card issuer has certain international restrictions, so it's important to check whether your card excludes your destination or has any special conditions. Also, they do have restrictions on certain types of cars (e.g., exotic or high-end luxury cars). You'll definitely want to give your card issuer a call before your trip to make sure you're covered.
      From personal experience, I've been quite happy with the primary car rental insurance on my Chase Sapphire Reserve and Ink Business Preferred. We've not had any problems, even when renting cars in the UK and Costa Rica.

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  4 года назад

      It shouldn't affect your credit score. Though keep in mind that the rental car companies will often place a hold on your credit card. Also, not all credit cards provide primary car rental insurance, so you'll want to check whether your card provides that benefit.

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  5 лет назад +1

      I wouldn't recommend using a debit card to book a rental car, though most car rental companies will accept them. Though be careful of additional holds. I've heard of travelers getting massive holds on their accounts (like you would get at a gas station) in case there is any damage to the car.

    • @GOKU8125
      @GOKU8125 5 лет назад

      @@TripAstute So if there's damage, they won't add holds ?

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  5 лет назад +1

      No. Think of it as a deposit. They may place a pending charge on your debit card as a way to ensure that if there is damage, they can charge your account (and ensure there is money to cover it). The problem is that these holds can sometimes take a few days to drop off your account, which means that you won't have access to all your funds in your checking account. That's why I highly recommend using a credit card.

    • @GOKU8125
      @GOKU8125 5 лет назад

      @@TripAstute last question. So whenever I rent a car, all I have to do is pay for the car itself and the deposit fee?

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  5 лет назад +1

      It's complicated. The rental car companies usually quote you a price which you can then pre-pay before your trip. However, there are often additional fees and charges added. Also, if you return the car with less fuel than when it was rented, then they will charge you extra fees as well. On our last trip, the final total came out higher about $10 higher than the prepaid amount, so they charged me the difference when I dropped off the car. To be honest, the amount of fees and charges is very unclear!

    American Express offers insurance coverage for free if you pay for the rental with your AMEX card. Google it and check the specific type of AMEX card that you have. You can download the specifics which is basically an insurance policy. It shows the coverages, conditions and exclusions. Be sure to download/print it and take it with you on the trip. Also be sure to carry your insurance card from your personal vehicle with you. I like to get a copy of the rental agreement in advance from the rental company and run it past my personal auto insurance carrier. Always ask them for a WRITTEN response as to what coverages you need to purchase or don't need to purchase! They will try to give you verbal opinions... Beware.
