Thanks Stephen for cutting open 3 different engine oil filters to show us the difference.
In 1964 when I still had money and hair I was apprenticing in the local Ford garage as a mechanics helper. I had a case of old Fram filters at home. I was told to go to the local parts house and pick up some new Fram filters because that was what the customer specified for his oil change. When I picked up the Fram box I thought it was empty because it was so light. I bought another filter and took it home after work and cut it open and compared it to the older filters I had and could not believe the difference. It turns out that Union Switch and Signal had bought Fram and had proceeded to radically cheapen the product in order to bolster its bottom line. Once I used my old filters I have never, to this day, bought or used another Fram filter. I won't guarantee an oil change if my customer specifies a Fram. Fram is s four letter word!!!!!
Love and hate are also four letter words. Neither one is objective or rational.
if you had a basic PC and you went to a store to buy a new PC for the same amount you paid for the previous one, what you would get would be lighter smaller and work better. You not only accept that, you expect it. Why is it hard to accept that with advances in material science and engineering, something a simple as an oil filter might follow the same course of development?
Thanks for making this knowledge available for everyone. . As a 20+year mechanic it always pains me to see a Fram filter on a previously perfectly good vehicle
As an engineer, I respect professional mechanics and I take thier informed feedback seriously. Your training experience and skill is in identifying and replacing failed components . A filter is a consumable component designed to catch contamination and to be replaced.
How many failed oil filters have you replaced?
How many engines have you seen that were damaged by filters that had been replaced following the engine makers' maintenance schedule?
As a 20 year mechanic, you earn the majority of your income repairing damage caused by negligence in maintenance or operation, or by collision, not by badly engineered oil filters.
Fram was my favorite oil filter because of the grippy stuff, it made it real easy to hand tighten it . But I didn't know until earlier today when I was googling up Hastings oil filters and I came across a video similar to yours and I was shocked at what junk they are. I couldn't believe it, I've been putting that trash on my car for as long as I can remember, and I'm almost 62 yrs old lol. I've always tried to change my oil every 3,000 miles in the past, and that I'm sure is the reason they would run for well over 200,000 miles before I would junk them. But I'm gonna tell every one I know that works on cars about this. Fram has fooled a lot of people and I certainly am one of them, wow. They know better and to me that's about as dishonest as anyone can get, to say the least. They are just flat out ripping people off. From now on I'm gonna research everything before I use it on my vehicles and everything else for that matter. Thanks for the info sir, I certainly appreciate it. By the way I like your video better, good job!!!👍
If you change oil every 3000 miles fram is as good as any in fact lately they have improved their cheapest filter insteadofa piece of paper sprayed with black paint they actually use of a piece of rubber fir drain back valve. One of the best filters out there is supertech
I pulled a 1947 farmall cub out of a hedge row a few years back, I rebuilt the motor, I use it to cultivate, I enjoyed the fact that when I changed the cartridge oil filter I could still read the brand and part number stamped into the steel end caps. It read WIX.
I learned in the 70's that Fram is a 4 letter word. I hope service centers do not use them.
Agree with you my Dad taught me OIL AND FILTER ARE CHEAP CHANGE OFTEN, but I always buy a excellent filter, like You!
Thanks for the excellent info!! Never thought there would be this drastic a difference.
You just cured me of a lifelong FRAM addiction .
You gotta look for the FRAM Ultra synthetic filter. That’s the one that’s actually built right and looks high quality actually. All the other ones are garbage though.... don’t even touch em’ unless it’s the Ultra. Look at some vids of the Ultra vs the other FRAMS cut open.
Fram is great, just dont get the orange ones unless you are on a budget. These filters compared are not in the same price category, so its not fair at all.
I've used fram for 43 yrs and over 420 000 miles with no problems. I've cut many used ones apart. People cry about the fiber end caps but I've seen no problems.
NICE DEMO, I HAVE HEARD THIS BEFORE WITHOUT THE DEMO GOOD JOB
Thanks for the detailed info. No more fram for me!
Thanks for the heads up. I have a frame filter on my truck right now. Will never buy one again
GM filters are now exactly like fram cardboard
I have a feeling you're gonna start seeing alot more of that these days, what with the agenda to phase out combustion engines and all. These progressive useful idiots and their globalist controllers are gonna ruin everything with their horseshit.
I had no clue, I've been using Fram for awhile. I've heard they weren't that great, but actually seeing it cut open and explained makes much more of a difference. The grip was my selling point, never gave any serious thought of the inside. Wow. Much appreciated
I ran them for over 200,000 miles maybe 300,000 then when I could get to it went WIX
Thanks for the info, I have used Fram for more than 30 years, but my next oil change, will change that.
Good information. For folks that dont change their engine oil on schedule whether that be by mileage or time (every three months) they need the best oil filter on their vehicles. I use Napa Gold filters myself and I change them out every three months. The benefit comes with quality parts and oil. A video on synthetic oils would be informative to viewers as well.
You know this video was a little long, BUT it was pretty informative and pleasant. I knew frame was bad but I didn't know it was that bad. Cheers
Thanks for the info dude I had no clue Fram filters were that bad, I'm glad now that I never used them !!!
Wix is a subsidiary of Mann-Hummel, so does purolator. Those are good filter makers. Others like Mahle, Denso, Hengst are all good. Fram is the worst.
Hey StephenI've been using crown filters for sometime sometimes I switch up and use other ones but wow I did not know that about FRAM oil filters only because I was trying to save a few bucks so thank you for your information I will think about that next time I buy an oil filter thank you buddy and have yourself a great time
Quality oil filters include:
Hastings (USA)
Baldwin (USA)
Donaldson (origin depends on filter)
Fleetguard (Mexico?)
WIX (USA?)
In Fram's defense, they make different grades of filters and the high-end ones are VERY good filters. The orange cans leave a little to be desired, though.
Personally, I prefer the Hastings. USA made is extremely important to me. The LF115 is a HIGH quality filter and their customer svc. is top knotch. ☮️
USA made is a number 1 determinate yet only teardown and testing reveals;
Even at 20 microns given an efficient filter that is an abrasive anyway;
So when is my engine going to die ? My 23 year old truck with 300,000 miles. My oil comes out non gritty and I've only used Fram and Penzoil onventional oil. Never had any internal issues. I think there's more to it than the construction but the filter capability along with maintaining a proper flow rate for lubrication. It only has to last for 3-5 thousand miles. Enjoy all your videos btw !
Awesome job! I've always heard that Fram filters were junk, but this proves it! Thanks for the great video!
Hearing something again doesn't prove it's true. I've heard that Democrats and Republicans couldn't be trusted so many times I've lost count. I have both in my family, and the -y can be trusted implicitly. You can't tell if something is from what "you've always heard" or by tearing it down and looking at it. You need to see how it behaves. That's true of every person and every kind if device ever created by mankind.
Yep fram has only sold about a trillion of them and just look at all the damaged engines LoL 😂
Thanks didn’t know..used fram for years but now I know...
Cool. I'm gonna go cut up a Motorcraft filter now I know what to look for.
Purolator makes Ford Motorcraft oil filters to Ford specification's. Cheaper labor than Ford union rate and benefits.
Me and my Father always use motorcraft in my 92 ranger and it is now at 392,561 miles and it's still running almost as well as the day Ford dropped it in the driveway (it was Custom Ordered by my father from Ford to get the 4.0 engine because it wasn't available in black-on-black in our area )
Great video, I guess Fram marketing had me fooled. I have been using Motorcraft lately and glad I switched from Fram. Using Wix XP on my new vehicle, Palisade.
You're right. Fram sucks. I used them for a while, until I saw these testing videos. Thanks for the info. People should know this stuff.
I always try to use oem brand filters but I have used Fram filters occasionally in the past but after seeing how cheaply they're made I will never use one again on any thing I own and I will start warning everyone else too about what junk Fram filter are. Thank you so much for doing this video and informing the everyday shade tree mechanic about this five dollar problem that could end up costing a person five thousand dollars or more for a new engine. Thanks again.
Great video...I almost always use Fram filters.....no more!!! Thx
Fram orange filters suck. They do make good filters though, their extraguard and ultraguard synthetic filters are quality.
I agree with this completely I’ve used the ultra guard on my Silverado and it seemed to be fine and keep the oil fairly clean but I’m pretty specific so I change my oil every 3,500 miles
Thanks for the detailed information
thank you I did not know that. What about CAT oil and fuel filters how do they compare?
Here in Australia we only have a handful of filter brands, compared to the plethora available in the USA. Our domestic filter market is dominated by Ryco, they're made in China but that's not a bad thing considering that they're great quality and affordable. Sakura filters (made in Indonesia) are a good Japanese brand and lately I've also used Terrain Tamer filters (Thailand). Everyone bitches about filters being made in foreign countries but Fram shows that quality has little to do with the country of origin. Doesn't matter if a filter is new or used, if you cut everything open you can learn a lot and make your next purchases based on real information.
years ago i used to work at walmart tire lube express we had our very own FRAM oil filters that had the sure grip all over the canister that was a walmart exclusive for tle !!! i'm not sure why they never sold the oil filters like that in the store that sure grip on the whole canister was really nice!!!!
Great video and you’re absolutely right about the filter Wicks are the best. The only problem I have is the hat and the beard and that millennial look but other than that you’re spot on🤣🤣
I've heard that about the fram filters I have a 99 superduty 7.3 how do you feel about the k @ n oil filter
I used to always buy Fram filters until one day i got home open and took out the brand new Fram turn it over so i could see the threaded end of it and saw tiny metal dust all over and inside of it i called fram
themselves and spoke with them and the guy
acted like they couldn't care less about my find i returned it and never again bought a fram anything.
I have and and always will use NAPA Gold, my dad always said that Fram was crap. I never doubted it because, NAPA wasn’t going to stick it to you for $10 more a filter for no reason, and I searched one night and understand why now
Thanks. Same HERE, GOLD Napa ( wix), or Royal Purple for extented periods, & MOB1.
Thanks for the great reviews. I wish I had seen this earlier today because I was changing the oil. I used STP filter. Please let me know what you think of it.
you"re doing a great job, my friend , to letting us know all these hidden details. many thanxs from me..
You hit the nail on the head! Anything but Fram!
second video I've seen like this. Been using fram forever. Will def be changing now. Thank you. I feel ripped off. That sucks.
about 15 years ago my friend showed me a dumpster completely full of mighty and lubefiner filters, sealed cases of them in the dumpster he pulled them out to sell last the flea market. this became one of his favorite dumpsters to dive in. on one occasion he came across paperwork from the testing lab they used and it showed the filters they have made in china all completely failed the filtration testing that was done.
Stephen thanks for the info never knew that
What do you think about a Purolator Boss Oil Filter vs a Wix Ap Oil Filter? Trying to decide which one to buy
Purolator is standard Bosch/Mann-Hummel, they're the same products but rebadged. Wixx ones are spring loaded and a lot of them are wire-backed as well they're pretty good, same as Napa. Not that Purolator/Bosch/Mann need wire backing, they're very well made even if they're only using glue and the standard metal plate instead of a spring it's just good worksmanship.
New viewer, used fram many years, changing now. Thanks for opening my eyes.
always use wix in my BMW
Never one that about the Fram Oil Filter. I will use Wix from now on.!
I didn't know that. I've seen other people say that since your post . I'm done with Fram.
wow. thank you!
2k+ fram employees watched this video...
Thanks for this info Stephen.I still see duds buying & using this filter.
I had a Performax filter on my '07 Toyota FJ Cruiser. I am told that I need to change the filter each time I change the oil. The first time around, I neglected to change it, and it held up perfectly. I changed my oil last week and the filter only except that the filter I am using is the Toyota brand filter. I am told by every Toyota owner that the OEM filters Toyota specifically makes for their vehicles are superior to anything aftermarket.
This why my Cummins engines get Fleetguard filters!
i used to work for crossland filters, we made filters for ford and after market sales/replacement parts, they are exactly the same, we just used blank moulds with no name in for the after market filters.
My family has 4 cars, including me and all of the filters we use are Fram and somehow no issues, we change them every 3,000 miles. I was NOT paid by Fram to post this.
I just changed my oil at the beginning of this month, and it has a pennzoil oil filter installed. Is it a good filter?
Thanks,;not much info on those i noticed:::: interestingly , my MOPAR DEALER USES “ PERFORMAX (* make in Mexico, up until last two PROGRAM oil Change for my 2015 DOdge Journey(( now labeled made in USA, DISTRIBUTED bySOPUS )), sera associated with PENZZOIL AT KNE time, ... I gen use NAPA gold (* shorter term) and ROYAL PURPLE, LONGER term / esp synthetic ... personally, I use MOBILE ONE OIL..
No, it's a garbage filter. Use Wix or Mobil 1
I will not ever buy another Fram thanks for the video !!!
The XG line, or synthetic line are good filters. Trap particles down to 20 microns..
I'd like to see Orange compared to Wal-Mart's Super Tech oil filter.
I wanna add a few things.
Fram ultras are very good.
Oil filters clog very easily not in 50k miles which is why alot of people get sludge problems.
Don't buy anything but Fram ultra or titanium.
Ps I don't exactly support Fram.. They need to upgrade their lower line filters for sure. But I wanted to clarify
This looks bad but can an engineer chime in and say if it’s actually a bad design?
I don't need to see any more because what you have shown me speaks volumes
Mostly because I live in Europe now and often I'm on the autobahn.
Absolutely not a place to have a engine failure because everything here cost twice as much
Your the best
Randolph Bowen
My dad bought a Dodge Dakota pick up in 87 I was told by the dealer shop foreman that they couldn't by order of Dodge not to honor the warranty of any automobile that came into for warranty service with a Fram oil filter.
FRAM In the "CAUTION ORANGE" package!
Always liked Fram......until now. Thank you !
Mechanic from Australia looking for Ryco substitutes for my new job. Guess Fram is not gonna cut it?
It's amazing how before he cut open the frame he is already saying don't get it amazing
He’s already cut them open didn’t you listen to the video?
i did not know that...growing up my dad bought nothing but Fram oil filters as far back as i can remember...me myself i buy nothing but Wix...not sure why but i always have...thanks for the info...now i have to convince my dad to stop buying Fram oil filters😳
Thanks I never knew it.
I have to agree with you. I saw a display at my parts store that shows three oil filters cut open you could pick them up and feel of them. Fram filters suck!
I use Napa filters on my vehicles.
On my trucks I use Donaldson, fleetguard on my Cummins.
Baldwin also makes a great filter.
JUST DONT USE A FRAM. I would not put a fram on a bicycle.
NAPA is Wix re-labeled;
I used to be NAPA Loyalist but due to current situation I know personally of a shop that sold his to them;
( read between the lines )
Thankfully I've always used Mobile 1 filters, with the anti-drain back
Where do you get Mobile 1 filters, it won't be many common retail;
Currently I use a part-supply which serves many shops;
Pre-fill → tried it = works much better on cold-crank after change;
Lifter noise nearly zero ~ can see a few air-trapped-bubble purging dash gauge
Noise as we know are for loud-pipes not machine surface;
@@ChiDraconis Mobile 1 filters are at Wal-Mart.
I was told to stay away from fram a long time ago.
If Fram were that bad, the lawsuits would have buried them years ago,
12:00, The WIX filter has better paper, true... BUT there is also LESS FILTER PAPER MATERIAL IN THE FLAM. One Other FILTER Comparison cut the paper Out and MEASURED THE LENGTH OF IT. 19:00, OH it is you great to see the differences.
Thanks 🇺🇸👍
When wix were making the filters for napa they said “what color do you want on the box? We have black and yellow”
This debate has been going on forever about fram and I just cut apart a fram that the sheet metal inside it looked like it was rusting for a while. Still no quality control yet
They must be really bad......been using them all my life......500 thousand on my old Datsun, 250 thousand on my present Nissan, 180 thousand on my wife’s Nissan, 140 thousand on my 52 Chevrolet truck. Think I’ll keep using them!
,been using them 30 yrs. No problems
I went through John Deere's filter media training years ago. *Never* want to use cheap filters again!
Wix!
John Deere! (Yes, they have them for many common auto applications)
Commercial!
You need a Milwaukee Fastback utility knife. Clips right on your belt or pants somewhere & you always have it. Spare blade in handle. Always sharp. I only use Wix filters.
I usually uze mobil one bit i seen the fram ultra and looked real good so was going to switch then i read about the glue problems. Going to go with iyh wix xp
Okay I gotta be honest. I've seen one of these filters go 7000 miles on a Kia Rio. I opened it up and it held up just fine. The whole thing looked clogged though since it's filtering area sucks. It's a 3k-5k interval filter at best. I may not think they are that bad, but I will still use Wix. I'm not doing short intervals as I use synthetic, and I like to smash the gas pedal.
I'll never buy Fram again thanks for this video been using them for years ugh horrible.
not used fram for many years, people always thought i was mad, the old crosland were great 522 and 532 were top
Funny thing is that Fram cost just as much as the lot better filters....even if Fram sold them for 5 for a dollar i wouldn't buy that crap....Napa Gold are very good filters.
Fram, it what you get for $6✌️I use wix.Do one on fuel filters next.
purolator is good too - denso for fuel pumps/filters
I’ve always known Fram was the crappiest filters on the market. Use to work part-time at an auto part store an always steered people away from Fram. I use Wix XP on everything.
Good video
I do wonder if you change the oil every 5000 km - and use filter magnets......eg filtermag
does it matter wot oil filter you have as the motor is always clean anyway....
Good to know . ..
I’ve used a couple Fram gold filters they seem to be ok but fram I will say yes you can use them and have no issues but you HAVE to be good about changing your oil
A TRUE evaluation of an oil filter can only be done by doing an analysis of the used OIL after the recommended oil change interval.
Observing the individual internal components is just that, AN OBSERVATION !
The thumbnail gave me a scare, I've been using WIX forever
The Anti-drain-back valve on good filters is SILICON!
Thanks
What do you think about Fleetguard filters?
I’ll give you my opinion, I used to work for Ryder truck rentals, all we used were fleet guard filters. Different numbers mean different things, usually they’re just as good as oem filters and are sometimes made in the same country as the oem company, like for the Detroit DD series I think the number for those was LF17511 they’re made in Germany just like the oem. Some are made in China some are made in the USA, I’ve even seen fuel separator filters made in Bulgaria. But overall I think they’re great filters, we never had a problem regarding filters. Cummins makes them and they’re the oem for all Cummins diesels.
Thank you. That's good to know.
It amazed me how many people still buy the orange can of crap from FRAM
Fram ultra are really solid though. I personally use them. But their basic ones I have to agree they are bad. But oil quality matters way more than the filter unless your have a badly worn engine.
Fram is all bad filter media are all the same frame will kill an engine
@@edschwendiman2566 no filter will kill a engine. As long as the oil is changed. I've seen engines go over 200k without ever changing the oil filter but they changed the oil. I wouldn't recommend it. But you are one of those fram bad fools.
@@tjk5992 my experience with fram's filter media in the oil pan was enough evidence for me they have no quality control
That grippy stuff is most likely sprayed on bed liner.
How much filter material do you really need for 5 quarts of oil every 3000 miles?
The more the better, and for the same price why would you not want a good filter. Anyone with half a brain will choose a wix over a fram.
Orange can Fram filters are budget filters. The Ultra line is a different story and among the best you can buy from the box store.
