I like the s, and it points to the suit being kryptonian, which also makes the trunks not an earthly fashion choice, but an aesthetic from another society.
I assume it'll be the crest for the House of El. I think the Kingdom Come "S" makes sense as a Kryptonian symbol because then it shouldn't look exactly like a letter from our English alphabet on Earth, but can still be interpreted as looking similar enough to an "S".
I agree, and I have a feeling that might be why Gunn decided to go with this version. Sooner or later we'll have an answer from him about that, I'm sure.
It's not an "S", but it is the symbol for the House of EL. That symbol which was adopted by one of Kal-El's ancestors was historically used as a symbol of peace & hope during a particular time of crisis on Krypton. While its historical significance may have been forgotten by some, its meaning was well remembered by the House of EL and their allies. Earth: A small, locked chest dropped from the ship while it was being hidden in the Kent's barn. As Martha picked it up, she instinctively took notice of the silver "S" engraved on the smooth black surface. Many years went by and as Clark grew older, he started asking questions, questions that two kind farmers from Kansas just couldn't answer. Martha said to Johnathan, "It's time." Her husband took a deep breath, "Where to start?" The wife caressed her husband's face as she held back a tear, "We start at the beginning..." Johnathan called for Clark who was clear across the field. He didn't shout. It was too much of a strain besides, he knew he didn't have to. This figure that stood in front of him could only be 14, not much older. He had the visage of a young man. "Clark, I need some help clearing the barn's basement" The young man was aghast, "The barn has a basement?" Martha was waiting in the barn when her two boys arrived. "Mom, you know about this, too? What's this about?" They showed Clark the ship and the chest. They did their best to explain the decisions they had made and the secrets they had kept. They accepted responsibility for the half-truths and outright lies that were made in defense of those secrets. Clark's attention shifted to the black chest that Martha held tightly. "What's that?" His father was surprised, "I assumed you'd be more fascinated with the spaceship." Clark chuckled, "Yeah but there's something important about this chest. I know it. I can feel calling to me. That symbol looks like an "S", but it has a greater meaning, it's personal." Johnathan braced himself for more unanswerable questions, "Your mother deduced years ago, that the "S" is your family crest. Jonathan looked up at the barn's first floor and beyond, "Your family from, up there..." Clark was excited now, "Who are they? Where are they? Why did they send me away? Why-" His father interrupted, "Son, Son, we don't know. The bereft father through his hands up in frustration. Martha stepped forward, "Maybe the answers are in here." She handed the chest to her son. Clark ran his finger across it, feeling its surface. Then something interesting happened. The chest opened. Days later, Martha took the clothing that Baby Clark had been wearing that fateful morning. Upon some kind of inspiration, she decided to attempt to make a gift for her son. No matter how long she had labored, she never ran out of material. Before she realized just how miraculous her accomplishment was, it was complete. When she presented the gift to her son he said with some doubt, "You made me, pajamas?" His mother said, "Clark, you looked at the chest for one minute and you knew it was special. I have pondered over it for much longer than that. I know too that this "S", whatever it means, it's important. It will be important to the entire world one day. Trust me. Just put this away and when there is a use for it, you can kiss me on the cheek and say, "Thanks, Mom!" Years later, the plane touched down safely, but not under its own power. Martha watched with bated breath as the man emerged from the smoke, He waved to the crowd, smiled, and flew straight up into the sky. A female correspondent who had been on the plane stumbled with one missing shoe. She took the microphone from a red-haired assistant, "This is Lois Lane, reporting from the site of ..." When the report was near its conclusion, Miss Lane relayed the hero had calmed the excited passengers by sharing his opinion that flying was still the safest way to travel. She concluded that remark was meant to be humorous and ended her statement with, "What a super man!" Her report was shared worldwide. Martha heard a swoosh! She turned around to her son. "It still fits. I made it when you were fourteenish and it still fits. Clark smiled in admiration, "I know. You made it good!" He kissed his mother on the cheek, "Thanks, Mom!" His mother turned back toward the television. She said "Some think you are a beacon of hope, and others aren't sure what to think. They're scared of what you represent, change. There's a lady reporter, I think she has a crush on you. You better watch out for her. "I think I'll have to. She's my new partner at The Planet." Martha gazed at her son, "I am so proud of you and I know your father would be too." A look of concern flashed across his face. The knowing mother said, "You have to go" Clark nodded and was gone. Martha sighed as she turned once again to the flickering box. The lady reporter was recounting her account of the event. A protective mother spoke as if Miss Lane could hear her. "If you want him, you better be on your toes." Just then the red-haired boy returned and handed Miss Lane her missing shoe. "Thanks, Jimmy and thank you to the man who introduced himself as a friend,. For better or worse, the world has given him a name. This is Lois Lane reporting from the site of Superman's world debut, signing off." Martha Kent turned off the television.
@@christianrapper5 Granted, but stories evolve. I can't begin to count the retcons in comics and other media. Many I don't agree with. This one I do. Batman calling himself such and having a bat icon on his chest makes perfect sense. Someone seeing what looks to be an "S" on a hero's chest and naming them Superman also makes sense. The "S" being an actual S does not make any sense, at all. Krypton was another planet. Why would they have any common letters or symbology with any part of Earth? It must be a coincidence (in-universe) and a contrivance by writers whose target audience was children and illiterate adults. That Jor-El wore the "S" well establishes it as a Kryptonian symbol and this part of the lore was carried over into many other tellings. Additionally, the "S" is only significant to people whose language includes an S. The closest the Russian alphabet has to an S is a C and what does an "S" even mean to a Japanese fan? To have it be a symbol that represents an idea is a change from the original that I can happily live with.
Yes! That's what we need. Super hero who helps because he or she can. Obviously I want it to be Superman. A scene in that movie could have someone ask Superman why he helps people. His response? "Because I can". Then have the first person come back with, "good answer". And they both smile. Price of admission, right there. No virtue signal, no butthurt drama, and not being conflicted. Heck, if we wanted to see that we'd go see a Marvel movie.
its actually less like the kingdom come logo cuz the actual kingdom come is wider, so its the kingdom come design with the original "S" crest triangle shape
Great video once again gentlemen. Two points. 1, I can't remember which novel it was but Jor'El was explaining the three shapes of the family emblem. The five-sided shape was a eye, the inner shape was a river and the "S" was a serpent and it pointed back to an event in which the House of El was involved with a critical historical event. And therefore the house of El was elevated to a favored status in the Kryptonian society. If they keep this as part of the lore, then Superman will take on a deeper meaning, not just a 40s comic book character with "super power". 2, The only way Superman can ever be successful in any genre is to ask the question, what circumstance arises that requires the attention of a super being? Can he win it or lose it? It cute and cool to see him fly around rescuing a cat from a tree, saving AirForce 1 or even protecting people. But let's be honest, these are things human can do if we put our best effort into it. Kal'El just gets the job done faster. But if the genres doesn't address why a Superman would be needed to save the world when it can't save itself, the movie/television show doesn't work. I am hoping this movie will address that. Again, great video, all the best!!!
The way I see it, you don't change a family crest. It's a seal of identity. It's like changing the Great Seal of the United States from a bald eagle to a chicken. I know this symbol was no doubt heavily influenced from the short-lived "Secundus DC One Million" design, but even that was course corrected.
Well to be fair, these are different universes with different story continuities. Lots of little details can change when stories are retold. The Superman crest has changed dozens of times over the years.
@@prodigioussaps I knew you'd get me on that multi-universe technicality! 😂😂 Merry Christmas, crew. Looking forward to your videos, clips, anecdotes, and insight in the new year!
It looks like the paleo hebrew letter Nun for serpent, seed, fish, heir. Or possibly the modern hebrew letter Lamed, representing El. The creators of Superman were Jewish and may have incorporated a symbol from their faith.
Years back there was a story where they incorporated the origin of the 'S' symbol with American Indians here on Earth. Gunn's 'S' symbol represents Hope and even the idea of Superman more so than Gunn's personification of Superman. I don't know what character that is bleeding in the snow but whatever it is it's more 'Man' than 'Super' and that sucks. Also, for an alien character who doesn't need to breathe, he's certainly wheezing very heavily. And much of the snow should be blown away during the whistle. These are just two things I myself immediately thought as overlooked details among the horrendous looking Guy Gardner.
I didn't like the "Kingdom Come" variation of the shield and seeing it on the suit just shows it looks ridicules, including how it looked on Routh's "Crisis" version of it, the only deeming factors are the colors are back to how the creators intended it to be. But i've decided that i'm not gonna bother with this movie in the Cinema, it's not a Superman that I can connect with... even if this looks leaps and miles better then the travesty made by Snyder.... and trying to dance on emotional strings by butchering the John Williams score just doesn't work on me....
Why can't it be both? It's the crest of the house of El, a symbol meaning "hope" on Krypton. When a man with superpowers wearing a symbol that looks like a Roman "S" starts publicly saving people, they decide to give him the name Superman, and the symbol becomes an S in the eyes of those watching. The thing about symbols is that they can stand for more than one thing at the same time. It can originate as a symbol of hope or the crest of the house of El, and still be an S that stands for Superman. The meaning of a symbol isn't determined by its origin, it's determined by the shared social perception of the meaning of that symbol. And of course, the real answer is that it's an S, which stands for Superman. The reason any version of Superman has an S on it is because the iconic version of the hero wears an S. They can give it a different origin story if they want, but that's an S, and it first stands for Super in the minds of the vast majority of people who see it. A red S inscribed in a point-down pentagon with three long sides and two short ones is instantly recognizable as the Super- symbol. My point being, even if the origin in the movie is given as hope or house crest, the moment people start seeing it as a symbol of the man wearing it, what it is changes. Symbols mean what people perceive them to mean.
Well yes, even when it’s explicitly been the House of El crest it’s always also identified as an ‘S’. I don’t think that will ever change. I only posed the question because I was curious if Gunn’s new canon will carry over that detail from the earlier films.
Meta comment it is refreshing that no one as done the first comment meme here even though I am kinda doing it now but I am also going to ask for a recommendation of a piece of media that does a deep dive into the religious symbolism and the spiritual context that The Superman mythos emerged from?
People have such a hard time accepting that the original intent was just a dumb s for superman because it's for kids. Doesn't ultraman wear a U, or is that the symbol for power?
Yes, originally it was always just an ‘S’ up until SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE came out in 1978. MAN OF STEEL also ran with a similar idea. It’s not an issue of people not accepting the original intent, it’s just one of many things about Superman lore that has changed over the years.

@@syamilshazlan862 Entirely agree. And a Superman who lost control of himself? It made Batman sound Crazy, psychopathic villain - and why did learning that Superman had a human mother influence his decision to murder him? I'm going to ben honest... I don't like this S symbol - even knowing its origin doesn't help. I always interpreted on the classic S symbol that the red parts are the shield backdrop and the yellow parts are Kryptonian script and lettering; humans read it wrong as an S. This Kingdom Come S is really hard to read as anything other than two parallel blocks. Maybe for the Kingdom Come storyline that symbol means a new dawn, or rebirth or even revolution - but it doesn't mean Superman or El to me.
bru what yes its going to be the house of el symbole of hope like.... just because of it looking more like kingdom come superman doesn't mean its not that will always stay the same with every superman. james gun knows that fact.
Its resemblance to the Kingdom Come crest wasn’t really why I asked the question… yes in the movies it’s always been the family crest but in the comics that hasn’t always been the case. Gunn, being a huge comics nerd, has the opportunity here to revise things back to square one with the ‘S’… but I don’t think he’s doing that.

When I was around 5 or 6, I thought the 'S' was actually a group of yellow Kryptonian symbols on a red shield.
Martha said to Johnathan, "It's time." Her husband took a deep breath, "Where to start?" The wife caressed her husband's face as she held back a tear, "We start at the beginning..."
Johnathan called for Clark who was clear across the field.
Jonathan looked up at the barn's first floor and beyond, "Your family from, up there..."
Clark was excited now, "Who are they?
Trust me. Just put this away and when there is a use for it, you can kiss me on the cheek and say, "Thanks, Mom!"
Years later, the plane touched down safely, but not under its own power. Martha watched with bated breath as the man emerged from the smoke, He waved to the crowd, smiled, and flew straight up into the sky. A female correspondent who had been on the plane stumbled with one missing shoe. She took the microphone from a red-haired assistant, "This is Lois Lane, reporting from the site of ..."
When the report was near its conclusion, Miss Lane relayed the hero had calmed the excited passengers by sharing his opinion that flying was still the safest way to travel.
Originally it was just an S.
"Hope starts with an 'H', stupid!" - Batman
Not on Krypton, it doesn't.
Great video. Love this channel.
Thanks Corleone!
Great points one and all. Cheers man 👊 and thanks!
That symbol actually reminds me of the one on My Adventures with Superman.
It is definitely similar!
It looks nearly identical to an s from dc one million. Can’t remember what issue off the top of my head.
Yeah, “Superman Secundus” in DC One Million had a very similar crest.
Merry Christmas, crew. Looking forward to your videos, clips, anecdotes, and insight in the new year!
@@PhantomFilmAustralia Ha, cheers! And Merry Christmas to you as well. Hoping to have our SUPERMAN IV breakdown out this weekend. 👊
It looks like the paleo hebrew letter Nun for serpent, seed, fish, heir.
Or possibly the modern hebrew letter Lamed, representing El.
The creators of Superman were Jewish and may have incorporated a symbol from their faith.
Dont like this Alex ross S! I really loved Dean Cains Pilot episode S shield and Brandon Rouths!
A lot of people on x saying it looks like a hotdog than an S. Now I can't unsee it. XD
People on X? Sounds like something the Snyder stans would come up with. I don't see it at all.
Kingdom come Superman inspired
Still waiting for Superman IV : Quest for Peace
Coming this weekend if all goes well. Appreciate you 👊
As far as I’m concerned that’s America’s S
Hahaha 👊
could "my world" be referring to his personal world. not the world he is from.
Ha, sure if you like. However Jor-El does provide historical Kryptonian context for that statement in another scene.
It's a hotdog 🌭 😂
Edit: you can't unsee 👀 it now
I'm staring at it right now and I can't see what you're talking about at all.
Turn it clockwise and it's a J. Hmm...
Meta comment it is refreshing that no one as done the first comment meme here even though I am kinda doing it now but I am also going to ask for a recommendation of a piece of media that does a deep dive into the religious symbolism and the spiritual context that The Superman mythos emerged from?
This isn't exactly a "deep dive" but it's a fun video on the subject: ruclips.net/video/-wvvFspJ9K0/видео.html
I don't like the shape of the crest.
Which version do you prefer?
People have such a hard time accepting that the original intent was just a dumb s for superman because it's for kids. Doesn't ultraman wear a U, or is that the symbol for power?
Yes, originally it was always just an ‘S’ up until SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE came out in 1978. MAN OF STEEL also ran with a similar idea. It’s not an issue of people not accepting the original intent, it’s just one of many things about Superman lore that has changed over the years.
The movie we deserve? The movie we need?
Yes!! Because as fans we don't deserved these...
A.Wacky Lex.
B.Martha memes which has reached official international cinematic level with deadpool2: 'then I found out his mom was named Martha too'..lol (still, chuck Norris online/expendable2 meme still the best: 'aft 3 days of agonizing pain,de cobra dies...').
C.Disrespectfully Killed off Jimmy Olsen prematurely b4 Clark even met n bond a friendship with him..
D. "HANDPICKED" Ezra Miller to play the Barry but with Wally characteristic...plus:annoying b4 the allegations
E. Gotham and Metropolis just across the bay from each other??!!
F. Heck Zack even failed in establishing THE Clark character n how he blends among the people he worked with.MOS n BVS unconvincingly brought that to life while donner n reeve were successful in just the 1st movie. Hey, Mark Waid (popular author of superman birthright) is the 1 commented that, not me...I just agrees with him..
Sometimes the planets align, the sun is at solar maximum, the sauce doesn't burn and the Chanted enchantments are perfectly recited . Let's hope this movie is one of those moments. I really want this to be a great movie. I want the magic to work.
I've not seen anything made after 2016 that truly impressed me . Well, maybe the Oppenheimer movie, did, but it wasn't fun. It was like watching a root canal being done.
@@syamilshazlan862 Entirely agree. A wacky Luthor that could barely speak in public and had a manic laugh worse than the "Joker" - and what I really hated, a Batman that some how thought a 1% chance of Superman being a danger was a good reason to torture and murder him - those torture scenes were unbearable to watch. And a Superman who lost control of himself?
It made Batman sound Crazy, psychopathic villain - and why did learning that Superman had a human mother influence his decision to murder him?
I was shocked when I realized E... across the bay? What are they Brooklyn and Manhattan?
I'm going to ben honest... I don't like this S symbol - even knowing its origin doesn't help. I always interpreted on the classic S symbol that the red parts are the shield backdrop and the yellow parts are Kryptonian script and lettering; humans read it wrong as an S. This Kingdom Come S is really hard to read as anything other than two parallel blocks. Maybe for the Kingdom Come storyline that symbol means a new dawn, or rebirth or even revolution - but it doesn't mean Superman or El to me.
it’s symbol for : 15 Yemen Road, Yemen.
Okay Chandler 👌
its an S recolored from Kingdom Coronswet is more than Cavill Frak Cavill and Snyder.
What now? I think you’ve got some typos there.
The more you deviate from the imagery the less will appeal to everyone.
Honestly. Only biblical adaptations will resonate to people and to YOU!
We don’t need Superman striking crucifix poses. That’s all we’re saying.
The suit looks atrocious.
Sorry you feel that way
@prodigioussaps It's such a massive downgrade from the MOS suit.
Henry Cavill had the perfect costume, not liking this new one & not really feeling the KC "S", just doesn't look right to me.
Personally I preferred Christopher Reeve's costume.
I prefer Reeve's suit over Cavill's, but I'm liking this new suit, too.
It is "S" for "Superman".
The family crest thing is bullshit and showed how Snyder had no idea.
The idea pre-dates Snyder, though, in both the movies and the comics.
@@dhenderson1810 🤦
? Hahaha. You've clearly never read a comic Or seen the 1978 movie with Christopher Reeve.
bru what yes its going to be the house of el symbole of hope like.... just because of it looking more like kingdom come superman doesn't mean its not that will always stay the same with every superman. james gun knows that fact.
