Here's why THAT scene in SUPERMAN actually works
I've had my nose broken in three places and will never go in those 3 places again.
Just be happy they cut the scene where he stopped a charging horde of henchmen in their tracks by blowing smooches their way !
I didn't dislike Man Of Steel. It's a pretty good movie. And definitely liked Henry in the role. It was a pretty dark and deconstructionst.... Personally I liked Amy Adams take on Lois... It was definitely different though. The writing wasn't consistent... And it just wasn't fun. It wasn't a fun movie. As much as I like Henry Cavill... Yeah, his Clark Kent was really underwhelming. I just think that was the creative take that Zack Snyder was going for... Batman v Superman was hot garbage... I was crazy to go the Batman continuation, the death of Superman storyline... And all the crap they threw in there. Plus that was the worst Lex luthor take of all time! The Zack Snyder cut of Justice League was not amazing, but it was night and day better than the theatrical cut.... It was better than Batman v Superman as well. You can't really blame Snyder for the theatrical cut of Justice League. That was bastardized so badly!
Good points! Agreed about BvS and JL... Zack's JL was a much better movie. Cheers 👊
loved him ! loved 'em all, even the good lookin brother. Glad you posted it. I had been thinkin, off n on "wassa matta for you?"
The one drawn by Curt Swan in the seventies.
He was a really good villain
They had alot of "worst" in this movie.
I saw this in a theater at 17, back in the 1970s. Laughed so hard.
The outakes are even more horrific.
No kidding!
NO..THE WORST SCENE WAS ALL THE HORRIBLE EFFECTS. THE MOVIE WAS A TRAVESTY, AND SUPERMAN 3 AIN'T ANY BETTER EITHER !!!
I hear you! I’m more referring to the horrible way Lois is treated in this scene.
I haven't finished this video yet, but I wanted to drop this in: The original plan was to release the first two movies at the same time. The first movie was going to end with a cliffhanger where the missile broke the Kryptonians out of the Phantom Zone. It honestly makes more sense to see the first two films as two halves of the same story, especially since the imprisoned Kryptonians didn't get a payoff in the first movie.
I wish she could have at least acknowledged that Clark and Superman are one in the same and then he erases her memory.........again. 😂😅
I don’t think she consented to any of that. Lois Lane, latest member of the “Me Too” movement. 😂😂😂
There's a Superman IV?
Yes, sadly.
The worst scene in Superman IV started just after the intro and ended just before the outro
I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with this dialog or this interpretation of Superman, in fact I think it's absolutely fascinating and an essential part of this franchise. Any superhero adopting two identities must choose which one is going to be "the real them" and which one is the "character". To me, it's so clear what happens in this version of Superman: Clark spent his childhood covering up his true magnificent self and pretending to be weaker in order to fit in, which must have been frustrating. So when he moved to Metropolis he took the opportunity to have a new start, separating these conflicting sides of his personality out into two, creating a new bumbling "Clark" character, while becoming his full and glorious true self as Superman. When Clark is about to reveal his identity to Lois, he stands upright as he takes off his glasses. This is the REAL man we're seeing. But I don't think Clark is a complete invention. I think we all have multiple sides to our personality, and Superman clearly does have a nerdy and goofy side, which he can't really indulge when he's standing in the office of a public figure like Superman. So I think Clark is just an exaggerated version of one aspect of his personality. He has to make the Clark persona quite different in order to define a clear distinction between the two men in his mind, making it easier to slip into character as Clark. Plus we also need to take into account his INCREDIBLE sense of humor. I'm sure he absolutely loves playing Clark and gets a huge kick out of it. It gives him an opportunity to fool around, to feel like a normal person, and to see things from human perspective. I think the only real question is "what is his name?" Does he think of himself as "Clark" or "Superman". And to answer this, I think it's important to remember that there are not two personas in these films but THREE. First, we have Superman - the truest representation of his personality. Then we have the exaggerated goofy Clark. But we must not forget that there is also the original "Clark" from his childhood, the "Clark" when he's around his parents. This "Clark" is essentially the "real man" except with powers mostly hidden. Therefore it seems rather clear to me that Superman DOES consider himself "Clark" and calls himself that name in his head. But "Clark" also happens the name of a character he plays. This would all probably be easier to understand if he hadn't chosen to use his birth name for the bumbling character and instead called himself, say, "Arthur Kent" (perhaps to rhyme with his mother's name). Then it would be clear that there was a man whose name was Clark but could never be fully himself growing up. He could be fully himself as Superman, but could also have some fun playing a goofier version of himself as Arthur.
It looks awful as well. Considering this is 9 years after the original movie, the blue screen effects are appalling. Anyway, I've seen this movie a lot. It is very bad, but it isn't boring at least, which is the worst thing you can be.
Hi Prodigious, I've just begun watching these breakdowns and loving them - can't wait to watch all four! If I may offer a little humble feedback, I think for your longer videos it would be well worth just introducing yourselves at the start of each video, for the sake of newcomers. Well, not even for newcomers, I mean I've hung around this great channel for a while now but actually I'm not really sure whom Brendan is, and exactly why you're talking to him about Superman 3 if he's never even seen the movie before. If he's your real-life friend, why is he always on a video call? Details like that are a little confusing and I think if you're building an audience you should be aiming to take away any confusion and make sure the videos are tailored to newcomers. Even if you just added 1 quick line into the description below the video I'm sure that will help. Also, I'm a big fan of RUclips channels having names that make it clear what you're watching. Maybe it's just me but I have no idea what "Prodigious Saps" means. This seems to be a Superman channel (at least, Google only ever shows me Superman videos from your channel) so if I were you I'd consider maybe changing the name to be a bit more Superman-themed? Like you could call yourselves Super Saps and have the Super in yellow on a red background so at a glance people can see the Superman connection. Or maybe just make your avatar the iconic S shield, or the S shield with "PS" in it, to make it "super obvious" what this channel is all about. (This is just a humble suggestion.) Just for the record, I'm in the early stages of setting up my "Scripture Man" channel which (eventually) is going to be all about Bible doctrine but with a fun superhero twist to grab attention :-) I'm probably going to wear some kind of costume too 😀 Lee
Hi Lee! Man thanks so much for all that. I appreciate your feedback. I was waiting to reply because there's no short answer to either of your suggestions. * We don't do introductions in every episode for a couple of reasons, 1) I'm personally not a big fan of them, I like shows that get straight into the content. 2) RUclips is also not friendly to that sort of thing because they become bits that people either skip over or get bored with and abandon the video. Most people just aren't interested in our personal backgrounds. But I understand some people will be curious, and this is why I have the lower thirds in every video where you can see our names and what our other "gigs" are (@blaggards for me and @teslacitystories for Brendan). Every video description has links to our other endeavors. If you're REALLY curious about our backgrounds (and that's the thing, most people really aren't and I don't blame them), you should watch our very first episode: ruclips.net/video/fx79Dqwu0Ao/видео.htmlsi=OxlPTWgp3EDEZLVD * It's true we talk about Superman a lot (especially the past several months), and Supes is essentially the spirit animal of P-Saps, but he is actually not the sole focus of the channel. Having said that, "Prodigious Saps" actually does come from a recently rediscovered long-lost poem about Superman by Vladimir Nabokov. We talked about that in our fourth episode, but it's also clipped out here: ruclips.net/video/h7pfHxb6G3g/видео.html We both love the name, so no... not a chance of changing it. Even though it is obscure and hard to pronounce. I actually kinda love it specifically because it is so weird. Cheers, and again I appreciate your curiosity, interest and concern. 👊
Robot Chicken did the superman kiss too. They had him make out with lex luthor, solomon grundy and Darkseid to erase their memories.
Arguably the worst scene in Superman IV is that shot of Superman flying directly toward the camera, because it makes up about 68% of the entire film.
I liked when he cooked the souffle with his heat vision 😅😅
Oh, was that was in the extended TV version? That wasn't in either of the cuts that we watched.
@@prodigioussaps Yeah I know same as when Non killed that little boy with that police car siren light
That other actor was a "straight man". Like Abbott and Costello. And that other actor kept going with the improvisation. He did not blow the scene. Ergo, he was a professional actor.
Indeed! Louis Sorin was great. We did a video on him too: ruclips.net/video/mIRPBBhaAuY/видео.htmlsi=QJi-UUWyhlfiFDbk
Worst scene is Superman has rebuilding the Great Wall of China vision. I could smile at Superman and Lois flying again. But the rebuilding the Great Wall of China vision is the worst.
Great brothers
I prefer the kiss better That whole flying around the earth to turn back time he did in the first one! plus it more sweet and romantic! you guys just don't have a sense of romance 😅
Yeah, erasing your ex-girlfriend’s memory against her will… SO romantic 🥰 Honestly I don’t like either ending… I think the writers needed to be brave and let Lois keep her memory. Who knows, maybe Donner would have done that if he’d had the chance!
@prodigioussaps Wasn't Donner that came up with Superman turning back time for a second time? BTW I know that Superman 2 came out before Superman Returns was even thought of but doesn't the with Lois losing her memory but the earth still in shambles after the three Kryptonian criminal's attack connect's more to Superman Returns since it's supposed to be the retconed sequel to Superman 2 🤔
He did, but they moved that to the end of the first movie. They were intially shooting both Superman I and II simultaneously, but had to halt production on II because the budget was getting tight. That's when they revised the ending of the first movie, and were intending to write and shoot a completely diifferent ending for II because he didn't want Superman to turn back time twice. But then Donner was fired and replaced with Dick Lester, so that never happened. Instead we got Dick Lester's magic kiss, which actually has its origins in earlier drafts of the script, where Superman gave Lois a potion to make her forget that Clark is Superman. It's long story, but a fascinating one I want to do a more detailed video on eventually!
In a film this bad, it's hard to pick a "worst scene". It amuses me that they couldn't afford to go to America, so the Metropolis subway was the London Underground, and the United Nations building was filmed outside Milton Keynes station! 😅
I know, it's a tough call. But it's the trashy way Lois is treated in this scene that cinches it for me. Superman treats her as if she's less than human. The legendary magic kiss in Superman II was a bad enough character moment, but this actually succeeds at being worse, IMO.
@@prodigioussaps It makes me wonder about the bit in Kill Bill Part 2, where Bill talks about Superman, and how he chooses his own representation of humanity to be bumbling Clark Kent. In reality perhaps he does consider humans to be a bit like pets, as Ursa wondered in Superman 2, maybe she was right?
I've always loved Groucho.❤❤❤😂
I believe that Cannon cut the budget on Superman 4 from $36 million to $17 million... judging by the look of the film, I'm wondering where the other $16 million went?
Yep, that's correct. I know it's crazy! You can practically see the budget $$ dwindling as the film rolls. It looks like they spent a lot of money on the opening cosmonaut space station scene, and then everything else was peanuts.
Inside the panties of wb
@jokerfleckcast3196 WB didn't bankroll this, Cannon did, and they syphoned money out of it to fund other projects and pay off debts, apparently
That money went to "Masters of the universe".
17,000,000.00 wow. Lol. I would have guessed about 2 million tops lol. Wtf did they do with all that money?!!! It certainly didn't go into THIS movie!! Lmao
This film is the epitome of "we have Superman at home"
I loved Superman Returns and was insanely hyped in the Summer of 2006.. The only other Superman I saw at the movies was Superman 4 when I was 6.. So I was ready for this.. Saw it 10 plus times in the Summer of 2006 LOL.. The Nostalgia did it for me being a massive fan of the Reeve movies.. It failed because it paid too much homage to the classic Reeve movie and it needed a great Supervillain we have NOT seen before in a Superman movie.. The trailers were great but the TV marketing I recall being less than exciting, although the lack of action scenes played a role in that... Overall NOT the Superman movie audiences were expecting by 2006.. I do agree Superman looking for Krypton was huh? Jor-El made it clear the planet was gone.. So him taking off to look for it made little sense...
You guys really need to watch the 'Smallville' show and see how they did it?... it will answer a lot of your questions about those missing years and how he would have been saving people before he became Supernan.
They were trying to Capture some of the Magic of the earlier films. Unfortunately they failed.
even as a kid I never understood or accepted the "kiss" away memories. But it didn't work the first time really, but he does it again so does it work the 2nd time?
Being a little young and naive when I saw Superman II, I remember being confused by that kiss. I just thought if you were a really good kisser, women temporarily forget what they were doing for the last few minutes. And naturally Superman would be the best kisser on the planet.
As a kid, I thought the worst scene was at the opening credits to the end of the end credits but I can't bring myself to watch this super turd again. I and II are the only Superman films that exist in my world, preserved in a tightly wrapped cellophane S.
1978
The whole movie was bad.
I'm British,so I say Krypton with what one might describe as a sharp O.
The speed to navigate the world would have burst Lois into flames.
I know it's just hilarious... either he traveled at sublight speeds or they spent several months circumnavigating the globe
You really shouldn't smoke, you know, Miss Lane.
@ The other most ridiculous idea was that dropping a nuclear man into a smokestack would suddenly increase the energy production for the entire country. If anything, it would have nuked the factory.
Have to agree with all of this fellas.
Alexander Courage's arrangement of the love theme for this sequence justifies the film's existence.
In the same scene they literally have Lois flying by herself. Sadly you could tell Reeve was so far removed by this point, he probably just wanted ot over. It goes against everything Donner set up. I agree it makes Supes look like a jerk. And completely destroys any credibility. He could of just went to Lois as Superman. They didn't even need to do a half- assed redux of their first flight. Just have them talking together. Jesus they almost had a decent scene later when Lois goes to visit a sick Clark. Even somthing like that could work. And yes still loads and heaps better than any Snyder crap.
I was under the impression that Lois realizing Clark was Superman (again), is what released the memories that were repressed by the S2 kiss.
Yeah I'm pretty sure that's what they were getting at. Which is apparently why he has to kiss her memories away again, even though she doesn't appear to be heartbroken anymore.
Oh god, make it stop. SO BAD! If the first two films weren't so amazing we could just brush this aside. Instead we have to accept that this incredible franchise had a huge dump taken all over it. Oh, and as a child, I found the scene with the man trapped in his car to be genuinely horrific. It's like this film managed to casually combine offbeat slapstick 'humor' with dark horror. (Two genres everyone associates with Superman!!) I mean, just OUT OF RESPECT TO DONNER could they not have retained the tone he set in the first two movies? Would that have been SO hard? The Vera cyborg still haunts me to this day. I still think I have a latent phobia of computers and technology thanks to Richard Lester, whom I'd REALLY like to refer to as 'D', but RUclips would remove my comment. I would genuinely love to see you two reacting to the entire movie like this. Even if all you do is groan, it's therapeutic to hear other men venting their disappointment with this horrible mess of a movie. Edit: I've just discovered that you HAVE done full breakdowns of these movies! I am SO excited about this and cannot WAIT to watch these! THANK YOU! 🙂
Ha, cool! Guess we need to do a better job at advertising the full episodes in these clips. Yeah just completed IV last week, and Supergirl is up next (yeeesh). Cheers! 👊 and thanks
The worst scene is the whole film
LOL oh god. I had forgotten about this sequence (I try not to watch this movie). This is SO BAD. I saw this film at the cinema when I was 10 years old. I was a HUGE Superman fan but I absolutely hated this film. If 10 year olds hate the film, you're in trouble. I came out of the cinema so down and disappointed. The best way to describe the feeling was it was like waking up on Christmas morning only to learn that Christmas has been cancelled this year. That's how Superman 4 felt to me as a child.
There were scenes in every Christopher Reeve Superman Movie that sucked, it just wasn't Superman 3.
Superman 3 was my favorite of the reeve series. Richard Pryor scream never gets old lol. Riot.
You're fully entitled to your opinion, but please know that your opinion is completely wrong 😀
I think the woman floating in space breathing and not immediately dying a horrible death is the worst scene, someone must have said nah we can't get away with that but there it is, followed closely by magically building a wall with his eyes...terrible but Christopher Reeve still great in it.
Yes, he is great. I just feel bad for him watching it, though.
I am *not* having this idea that IV is better than III. Superman III is fun and looks good. Superman IV is pretty terrible all round.
