There actually is lost footage of the first "Nuclear Man" fighting Superman who was very Bizzaro-like. But he ended up being so goofy that they cut out all his scenes. When the new body builder Nuclear Man appeared, he was the second version.

About the highly scientific creation of Nuclear Man: They didn't just put the box in the rocket: they BOLTED it onto the outside. Big 'ol box just sticking out of the body of the rocket and nobody said nuthin'. Wow. What I remember is the day this movie premiered, my sister brought my future brother-in-law into this country and I thought it would be cool to take them to the Big American Movie that was sure to be a hit. He was polite about it when it was over, but I slinked out of there incredibly embarrassed. Thanks a lot, Warners.

I adored Supes as a kid, and I was 13 or 14 when this came out. I didn't see it at the cinema, so I had to wait until it was on TV. Even back then as a kid, I thought this was a terrible film, full of so many holes!! I get there is some suspension of disbelief in any superhero film, but you really do believe a man can fly in the first two films as it's done so well.
The worst part for me is when nuclear man kidnaps "the woman" and takes her into space, and she looks down at the earth, in the middle of space, but she's absolutely fine!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Honestly 2 things. 1) they already used an “evil” Superman in number 3. He already fought himself before so they didn’t want to repeat that. 2) in deleted scenes the first version of Nuclear man looked like Bizzaro and even spoke in a strange backwards manner. 3) the best thing this movie actually introduced was a genius Lex, no longer a real estate obsessed man (that always seemed silly) and secondly it gave us another super powered rival which wasn’t a Kryptonian so he has a different power set.
Cheesy movie absolutely but the pseudoscience was the least problematic part for me 🤷🏾‍♂️

    • @axebomber2108
      @axebomber2108 21 час назад

I've never understood why people thought real estate was silly. Lex's application of his genius to commit crime was always so basic and childish in the comics. He'd build an invincibility suit to steal jewels or rob a bank. At least the crime is a little more complicated and based in realism in the movie. He's still a genius as his plan to cause an earthquake in California still involved knowledge of physics and plate tectonics. It's just instead of "give me a million dollars or I'll cause an earthquake in California" it's a scam that involves increasing land value, which still ends up with the same result of monetary gain.

This movie is the only time I really. .....question Reeve's integrity. He was very open with how he felt about Brando. Now Chris never mailed it in forcant Superman movie. But it was clear he didn't want to do this. What made him so great in the first two is sorely missing here ( Superman 3 was always a Richard Pryor vehicle, and Reeve got lost in the shuffle). Just the way Superman would stand in this movie was so off from the first two films. And let's not even talk about the whole " Don't do it, the people" line in downtown ( lol) Metropolis. Chris was very focused on how he portrayed Superman. And how Superman would act, or do. Something so small as how Superman would just stand or pose, his facial expressions. And Chris was also meticulous in his Clark Kent. Where in this movie Clark is just comic relief and fodder for the b story with Lacy, which thank God got cut. Even Superman 3, for all ira faults, you can see Reeve having fun. And there are great moments in there amidst the Gus Gorman garbage. This movie came out only 9 yrs after Superman 1. Reeve was only 36 at this point. Superman in this movie looked old. They stopped dyeing his hair jet black. Margo looks horrible. Why is Marc McClure even in this movie? Jimmy looks in his mid 30s. There was little of the great chemistry between Kidder and Reeve, even Reeve and Hackman looked forced. I think Reeve was probably done with Lester's vision, and at one point maybe Donner was rumored to return. But even Donner couldn't fix this. Although it would of been 100 times better. 3 really slowed the momentum and Reeve at this point wanted to do other things. He mainly did this to get Street Smart put out. And Reeve for a great actor he was, he didn't have the best way to tell a story. Mankiewicz told Reeve not to do the nuclear story line. In the end I think Chris had good intentions. I think at first he felt with so many pieces returning and the goofyness of Lester gone this could be something. But as soon as filming started he knew it was a dud. So bad that he actually considered doing a part 5. So it didn't end this way.

The sad fact is that by this point, the Superman movie rights were adrift in a sea of incompetence... certainly Reeve was swayed by the money and promises made, but I don't fault him for it. I think he really tried, but looking back this movie was doomed to fail no matter what happened.
I mean, even after WB got rights back a few years later they STILL couldn't get it together.

Speaking of the "don't do it" line, it seemed like Superman IV was rehashing too much from the previous movies. So much of the movie felt like callbacks. They could have just used A Bizzaro Superman. Lois and Clark did a great episode. Even the animated series did several good episodes. Bizzaro looks like Superman. He's Lex Luthor's 'son' - a geneticist was given a Lock of Superman's hair that Superman had given to charity. They didn't do the white makeup thing. I don't remember if they used the Bizzaro name but the clone doesn't act properly. The ending was rather sad.
I take it for granted that Superman would use his heat vision to cut his hair. Maybe Martha helped him? (don't try this at home?) . Oh, and instead of throwing in a nuclear reactor (and who left the door open on the reactor, this time?) fight him all the way to the outer solar system.
I'd pay a lot to have a kryptonite Scissors for my sewing room, unless we were under the rules of the 'Smallville' universe, then, I don't want that rock any where near me.

If I may play devil’s advocate for a moment because it’s been brought up in some of the more recent superhero movies. Is it possible the reason this WASN’T Bizzarro(and I have no idea) is that they didn’t have the rights to that character? It seems odd to not get full rights to all DC characters, but I know that’s been an issue with some Marvel stuff.

Here's a history lesson. In the Silver Age, his hair stopped growing under a yellow sun. He couldn't grow a beard. In 1986, this was changed. He can grow a beard, but has to use bent scrap metal and burn it off with a weak beam of heat vision. Later, he used the metal from his ship as the scrap metal would melt quickly. The hair on his head could burn off under intense heat. When he died, he had almost no solar energy in his body. While dead, his hair grew and he had a mullet. When his powers came back, he had long hair until he lost his powers following "The Final Night" and they didn't return right away. On the day of his wedding, he got a haircut in the morning.

There are scenes from an earlier version of the film. They exist right here on this site. Lex creates Bizarro with ordinary radiation before realizing he needs an alternate power source. The scenes are pure slapstick, more so than anything in even the previous films. Believe it or not. Bizarro is short, overweight, and has what looks like a bad wig. I don't know if the hair was intentional or just a result of the situation. He arrives practically naked and must flap his arms like a human chicken to fly. For his confrontation with Superman Bizarro wears a flashy 80's suit jacket. There's no doubt why they were forced to cut this material in whole.
There is one redeeming scene that I wish could have been reworked. Bizarro met a "shocking" demise and Lex thinks out loud while receiving a manicure. The Manicurist does not speak, but Lex seems to bounce ideas off of her until he successfully formulates the next phase of his plan, specifically the creation of Nuclear Man.
The scene of Bizarro arriving, "au natural", explains the later emphasis on providing Nuclear Man with a properly fitting suit. Lessons learned, I guess. Sadly, the absence of the Bizarro birth removes the setup for the Nuclear Man costume gag which was inexplicably left intact. This is basic comedy 101.
Also, what is the story behind the very specific vendetta against Venice Beach bodybuilders? Just kidding, stay super, my friends.

At first I was like this is lame, they did a number of vids on what's wrong with Superman 4. But after checking out the rest of your vids I see you guys crack on every Superman film and then some. 👍👍 Superman 4 had its issues cuz Cannon Group cut the budget, FX, script, and reused old footage from the earlier films. Whish is a shame cuz this was Reeve's passion project, and story, and Cannon ruin it to the point Reeve came to hate it. Also they couldn't get the rights to use Bizarro, which is a good thing cuz they already kinda did a evil Superman in 3 (which was the only thing good about that one). But thankfully that didn't happened, cuz we got the beast that is Nuclear Man. Mark Pillow was perfect for the role, and say for the bad weakness, Nuclear Man is my all time favorite DC villain. His theme music, the birth scene, his look, powers, claws and that metallic roar is freakin awesome.

As for Reeve playing Bizarro, I thought Reeve was down for it? I do think they could have made it work, with Bizarro being different enough from Evil Superman.
