  • A defense of Limited Atonement. The Five Points of Calvinism are often misunderstood and maligned. In this presentation on his radio show (carm.org/radio), Matt Slick defends Limited Atonement using God's word, so that the listener might better understand it and accurately represent it, even if he or she does not agree with it. Matt uses plenty of scripture to defend the doctrine. And, if the viewer wants to follow along with notes, they are available at carm.org/tulip-week-notes.

This is a pretty good study, but there is a lack of right division in a good portion in certain areas, and the reason that there is a lack of understand is because of the lack of dispensational truths.

Jesus says: “My sheep listen to me voice, I know them and they follow me.” John 10:27
Are you one of Jesus’ sheep?
Let’s find out and ask Jesus (excuse the caps for emphasis).
Whom did you die for, Jesus?
    Jesus says:
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me- just as the Father knows me and I know the Father-and I lay down my life for THE SHEEP....I call my own sheep by name and lead them out.”
    John 10:14-15, 3
    To the goats Jesus says:
“You do not believe because you are NOT my sheep....My Father HAS GIVEN THE SHEEP to me.”
    John 10:27, 29
    Jesus says:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends IF you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I CHOSE YOU.”
    John 15:13-16
Jesus did not choose the goats as his friends.
    Jesus says:
“The Son of Man came....to give his life as a RANSOM for MANY (not all).”
    Matthew 20:28
If Jesus ransomed the goats, they would all be saved.
“ I pray for them. I am NOT praying for the world (goats), but for those you have GIVEN ME, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.” John 17:9-10
Jesus says he died for the sheep and at the same time told the unbelieving goats they were not his sheep so he did not die for them and Jesus specifically said he is not praying for the goats.
Jesus chose his friends and died for them, not people who were not his friends and who hated him.
If Jesus died for the unbelieving goats, then their sin of unbelief would be paid for and they would be saved.
    Jesus says:
“I came down from heaven to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me: That I shall lose none of all he HAS GIVEN ME (the sheep) but raise them up at the last day.”
    John 6:38-39
In John 10:28-30 Jesus said the sheep were all the Father had given him and he and the Father are one (in essence and purpose and will).
To have Jesus die for all the sins of people who the Father did not choose is to split the Trinity and make Jesus working against the Father’s will.
Jesus did not die for Pharaoh and other people already in hell nor the goats whom he knew were freely choosing to go to hell and not the elect of the Father.
Why would Jesus die for the goats already in hell?
We all freely choose to go to hell but God chooses to regenerate and save some and die for them. That is pure mercy and grace. When God makes some people spiritually alive, who are dead in sin and resisting God, Jesus becomes irresistible to them.
If Jesus is irresistible to you, then you are one of the Sheep Jesus died for. Jesus did not die for the goats who hate Jesus by their own free will.
    Jesus says:
“My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me.”
    John 10:27
“I lay down my life for the sheep!”
    John 10:15
Do you know why you do not believe Jesus laid down his life for the sheep?
“You do not believe because you are not my sheep.”
    John 10:26
Instead of worrying if Jesus died for the goats going to hell, people better receive this teaching by Jesus himself because Jesus says:
“There is a judge for the one who rejects me and DOES NOT RECEIVE MY WORDS; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day!”
    John 12:48

Actually the word "Goat" doesn't show up at all in the entire book of John. But you know what DOES show up?? Jesus tells those people who are "not his sheep" that they can BECOME his sheep!!
"If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, BELIEVE THE WORKS: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him."
      John 10:37‭-‬38
And the ones Jesus chose. "You didn't choose me. I chose you". Those were the 12 disciples. Not every believer everywhere.
"And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;"
      Luke 6:13
Clearly Jesus had MORE than 12 real disciples, but he only picked 12, because they WEREN'T "chosen to be saved." They were chosen for ministry. To "go and bring forth fruit."
"Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you."
      John 15:16
There is ZERO evidence for calvinism in the bible. It's all in the mouths of deveivers who pervert the Word of God.

Many use Matthew 1:21 to prove their case on limited atonement, however this verse demolishes "Limited Atonement" rather than support it! Matthew 1:21, can easily be used to refute "Limited Atonement" simply because "his people" here refers to Israel and not the elect! And many are making the unforgivable mistake by interpreting "his people" to be the elect, because it was still in the Old Testament period when the angel proclaimed the gospel! And if "his people" refers to Israel then Jesus died for the elect and non-elect (Romans 9:6-11)! Any young Christian (young as in the faith) who know the simple truth that Israel is God's people in the Old Testament and when the Old Testament ended and when the New Testament begin then the doctrine of atonement will be very clear to him or her. Read also the parallel account in Luke 1:68-80, no one will have doubt that 'his people' is referring to Israel, God's people in the Old Testament. Therefore the atonement is not limited to the elect only

Thank you Mr. Slick for this informative video. In the first letter of John it says that Jesus is a propitiation for the sins of the whole world. In general, there are passages in Scripture that can be read to indicate limited and unlimited atonement. Some people go into universalism because of that but that is not where I would think to go. I do have a question though. How do I respond to a sceptic that would say that this issue proves that the Bible contradicts itself? I hope you can help me with this. Thank you!

How do we access this grace that’s freely available to us all?
    What’s the access point?
    Faith is the access point.
We need faith to access the grace that saves us.
Therefore it is if faith that it might be by grace.
    ROMANS 4:16
16 THEREFORE IT IS OF FAITH, THAT IT MIGHT BE BY GRACE; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
You have to believe that through the grace provided you will be saved:
    ACTS 15:11
11 But WE BELIEVE THAT THROUGH THE GRACE of the Lord Jesus Christ WE SHALL BE SAVED, EVEN AS THEY.
We have to RECEIVE God’s grace that’s available to all.
    We receive it BY FAITH:
    ROMANS 5:17
17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; MUCH MORE THEY WHICH RECEIVE ABUNDANCE OF GRACE and of the gift of righteousness SHALL REIGN IN LIFE by one, Jesus Christ.)
We still have to RECEIVE forgiveness.
Christ’s death didn’t forgive our sins.
Only faith in Him forgives our sins:
    ACTS 10:43
43 To him give all the prophets witness, that THROUGH HIS NAME WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHALL RECEIVE REMISSION OF SINS.
We have to RECEIVE the atonement:
    ROMANS 5:11
11 And not only so, but we also joy in God THROUGH our Lord Jesus Christ, BY WHOM we have now RECEIVED THE ATONEMENT.
**How do we receive the atonement?
    It’s THROUGH Faith in Christ.
    HEBREWS 9:15
15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, FOR THE REDEMPTION OF THE TRANSGRESSIONS THAT WERE UNDER THE FIRST TESTAMENT, THEY WHICH ARE CALLED MIGHT RECEIVE THE PROMISE OF ETERNAL INHERITANCE.
**Abraham and every OT saint who died in faith now had there transgressions redeemed.
We have to RECEIVE the adoption:
    GALATIANS 4:5,6
5 TO REDEEM THEM THAT WERE UNDER THE LAW, THAT WE MIGHT RECEIVE THE ADOPTION OF SONS.
6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the SPIRIT OF HIS SON INTO YOUR HEARTS, CRYING, ABBA, FATHER.
    We have to RECEIVE Christ:
    COLOSSIANS 2:6
6 AS YE HAVE THEREFORE RECEIVED CHRIST Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
We must APPLY the blood to the doorposts of our life:
    EXODUS 12:7
7 AND THEY SHALL TAKE OF THE BLOOD, AND STRIKE IT ON THE TWO SIDE POSTS AND ON THE UPPER DOOR POST OF THE HOUSES, wherein they shall eat it.
    EXODUS 12:13
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and WHEN I SEE THE BLOOD, I WILL PASS OVER YOU, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
** Even though Christ shed his blood for you if you don’t believe and receive what He did for you, you will perish.
God needs to see His sins blood on the doorposts of your heart when He passes over you.
If He just sees it shed on the ground you will surely be destroyed.
    EXODUS 12:22,23
22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and STRIKE THE LINTEL AND THE TWO SIDE POSTS WITH THE BLOOD that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.
23 For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; AND WHEN HE SEETH THE BLOOD UPON THE LINTEL, AND ON THE TWO SIDE POSTS, THE LORD WILL PASS OVER THE DOOR, AND WILL NOT SUFFER THE DESTROYER TO COME IN UNTO YOUR HOUSES TO SMITE YOU.
We must LOOK to the One lifted up for us:
    NUMBERS 21:8,9
8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS, THAT EVERY ONE THAT IS BITTEN, WHEN HE LOOKETH UPON IT, SHALL LIVE.
9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, WHEN HE BEHELD THE SERPENT OF BRASS, HE LIVED.
    JOHN 3:14,15
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, EVEN SO MUST THE SON OF MAN BE LIFTED UP:
15 THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH, BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.
God commanded us what to do all 3 times:
    1. Strike (apply)
    2. Look
    3. Believe
Moses understood and obeyed both times to the T.
    He did not question.
So why is it that when Jesus Christ Himself tells us how to have eternal life now all of a sudden we question?
    1. The blood of the lamb was available to ALL to apply to their doorposts.
    2. The serpent on the pole was available to ALL to look upon.
    3. Jesus is available to ALL who believe.
    Nothing has changed.
Just because it’s available to all doesn’t mean all will believe and be saved.
    He made a PROVISION.
    1. The lambs blood on the doorpost was a PROVISION.
    2. The serpent on the pole was a PROVISION.
    3. Jesus Christ was a PROVISION
    The atonement doesn’t save us.
    It makes a PROVISION.
It makes salvation possible which is the greatest accomplishment.
It provides a WAY that was otherwise unavailable.
Jesus is the WAY the truth and the life.
Providing a way for mankind who otherwise would perish is an accomplishment beyond comprehension.
To say that Christ’s death didn’t accomplish anything tramples underfoot the very blood that He shed.
    HEBREWS 10:29
29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, WHO HATH TRODDEN UNDER FOOT THE SON OF GOD, AND HATH COUNTED THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT, WHEREWITH HE WAS SANCTIFIED, AN UNHOLY THING, AND HATH DONE DESPITE UNTO THE SPIRIT OF GRACE?
    **Grace is available to all.
If you freely choose to reject the provision of Christ’s blood DESPITE this grace then you are counting it unworthy to save you.
You DENY the blood that bought you.
    You reject it.
You don’t RECEIVE it, you DENY it.
    2 PETER 2:1
1 But there were FALSE PROPHETS also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, EVEN DENYING THE LORD THAT BOUGHT THEM, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
**Do you preach that the Lord didn’t die for some people?
If you do you’re a false prophet.
You DENY the Lord that bought them.
    2 THESSALONIANS 2:10
10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; BECAUSE THEY RECEIVED NOT the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
    JOHN 12:48
48 HE THAT REJECTETH ME, AND RECEIVETH NOT MY WORDS, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Yes, Christ's blood may be available to ALL --- HOWEVER, ONLY those who God draws (the elect) will receive it (put their faith in it). Our belief (faith) is all by the power of God & zero by our own power.

We are not saved by the death of Jesus ( of course we cannot be saved without it ) we are saved by his life .
9Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
10For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
11And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
    Romans 5,10
Every one has a falling short of the Glory problem. When you.believe then you are saved and sealed until the day of redemption. Predestination is simply the security for the believer that from the moment of believing they are predestined to glorification( eph 1 ) . No one is predestined before they are in christ .
Everyone s sins are paid for but unless they sealed by the Holy spirit then they will not be saved . We died with Christ when we are in christ. We only become a ' new creation ' when we are born again . We only become new when we believe . When Jesus said ' it is finish ' you were not born again.
The problem with Augustine s philosophy ( calvernism/ Arminism) you are' irresistibly drawn' by the system which is the ' glasses ' you view the scriptures.

    #1. (Col 2:14) Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
    >> Agreed Christ paid for the sin debt on the cross. Also agreed here the "US" are believers but does it meant "only" believers and non-applicable to non-believers which you clearly erred. Further you stressed "Christ bore the sin only of the elect", please indicate to me the word "only of the elect" if found in this text? Is it not there but you utilized the preconceived Calvinist's notion that only the elect could be saved but this text dosen't say so.
#2. (Rom 6:6) Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
    >> This text is merely referring to believer's old being is crucified with Christ and thus we should not serve sin and it has nothing to do with limited atonement which is the subject of discussion.
    >>You are preaching Calvinism, the other gospel.

    This guy misquoted Colossians 2:14.
Not sure what Bible he’s using but that’s his problem it’s probably the Passion version or perhaps he just re-wrote it in his own words himself.
Jesus didn’t nail our sins to the cross He nailed the LAW to the cross that pointed out our sins!
It says He nailed the ORDINANCES (law) to the cross.
He didn't blot out our sins He blotted out the LAW so now there is no law that condemns us when we sin.
He doesn’t “blot out” sins, He FORGIVES sins.
    COLOSSIANS 2:14
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ORDINANCES that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to
    his cross;
    ROMANS 8:2
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the LAW OF SIN and death.
Didn’t make me free from sin it made me free from the LAW of sin that told me I was sinning and condemned me.
    ROMANS 4:15
15 Because the law worketh wrath: FOR WHERE NO LAW IS, THERE IS NO TRANSGRESSION.
**You can’t transgress something that doesn’t exist.
    ROMANS 5:13
13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but SIN IS NOT IMPUTED WHEN THERE IS NO LAW.
    ROMANS 8:3
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, CONDEMNED SIN in the flesh:
The LAW was nailed to the cross and taken out of the way so we are no longer under the law.
Sin was not taken out of the way.
Sin is still there but it doesn’t have dominion over us because there’s no law to point it out and condemn us.
    ROMANS 6:14
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: FOR YE ARE NOT UNDER THE LAW, but under grace.
We’re not free from sinning because anyone who says they are without sin is a liar and the truth is not in him.
We’re free from sin in that we’re free from any CONDEMNATION IT BRINGS:
    ROMANS 6:18
18 Being then made FREE FROM SIN, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Unbelief is not a sin. It leads to lack of faith that is required for salvation. People perish, for lack of knowledge when they willingly refuse to listen. (Hosea 4:6, Job 36:12).
The bible says that Jesus died ONCE for ALL sins and he conquered (past tense) sin and death -
1 Pt 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit
Rom 6:10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.
Rom 10:10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
2 Tm 1:10 - but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
1 Cor 15:54-56 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Sin is not the problem any longer. God dealt with it on the cross. Sin is not the reason people do not have eternal Life. Lack of faith is. Faith is not a work but Calvinism maintains that it is a work which is a huge reason they miss the truth on the matter. We are saved by grace THRU faith. Not works. If faith is a work as they say that means they believe we are saved by a work. Nope. Not scriptural. We are saved only by the grace of God. God requires only one thing and that is having faith in His Son's finished work on the cross. Unbelief, lack of faith, faith, those are all a state of mind not works. As a man thinks so is he (Prov 23:7). What we think is what drives our actions which result in either obedience or sin. If a person has the ability to think and reason they have the ability to believe something as well as the ability to change their mind. We are not so dead spiritually that we can't think. God requires that every person believe and in order to believe something we must be capable of understanding it. The bible says that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation for everyone that believes (Rom 1:16) and faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Rom 10:17). Either the bible is wrong or Calvinism is wrong.

L Morter Jesus said "believe in me" that is a command from God; not believing is sin obviously

L Morter further grace has no requirement or condition, faith is a result of salvation not the cause of salvation. You can't exchange anything for a gift otherwise it's not a gift.

Joe Indie Faith comes before salvation because it it through faith that we are saved by grace. Paul makes it clear that faith is not a work. We are not saved before we are saved. We must believe first and then we are saved. Faith is required and it is each individual's responsibility to believe or they can't justly be held accountable if they do not believe. Jesus took care of the sin problem. We are responsible to trust in Him. He is the only way to Life.

Reading too much into men's writing will result in such unbiblical doctrine of limited atonement. Try twisting the following verse:
Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
If the first "all" is all men for all have sinned, then the second "all" must also applied to all men!
The reprobate are not saved because their sin were not remitted:
Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

He didn’t pay our debt He paid an equivalent CONSEQUENCE of our debt which was DEATH in a cross.
God laid on Christ our INIQUITY (sins).
He took the just PUNISHMENT for our sins.
He didn’t pay for our sins He paid for the CONSEQUENCES of our sins.
    ISAIAH 53:5,6
5 But he was WOUNDED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS, HE WAS BRUISED FOR OUR INIQUITIES: THE CHASTISEMENT OF OUR PEACE WAS UPON HIM; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 ALL we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the INIQUITY OF US ALL.
    ROMANS 4:25
25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was RAISED AGAIN FOR OUR JUSTIFICATION.
    ************************************
He took care of the CONSEQUENTIAL EQUIVALENT
    of our sin.
    He took the chastisement.
    He took the wounding.
    He took the bruising.
    He took the death penalty.
    ROMANS 6:23
23 FOR THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
JESUS DIDN’T PAY FOR WHAT WE TRULY DESERVED, for what we truly deserved is ETERNAL DAMNATION.
Jesus isn’t suffering for an eternity in hell for our sins.
So we see that Jesus only paid for an equivalent of our consequences.
    ************************************
He paid our RANSOM not our debt.
When you pay someone’s debt that person does not now become your purchased possession.
**If I pay off your mortgage I don’t now all of a sudden own you.**
But when you pay a RANSOM they become your purchased possession bought back from what had separated you or held you captive:
    EPHESIANS 1:14
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the PURCHASED POSSESSION, unto the praise of his glory.
    PSALM 49:7
7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
Just as a ransom frees a captive from the power of the captors, so to Christ ransomed and redeemed us from the power of sin, death and the grave:
    PSALM 49:15
15 But GOD WILL REDEEM MY SOUL from the POWER of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
    ************************************
This ransom was not paid to Satan.
Christ made an open display of him by REMOVING THE LAW SO HE COULD NO LONGER CONDEMN US BECAUSE OF OUR SIN.
JESUS RANSOMED US AND SET US FREE FROM SIN WHICH HAD ITS GRIP ON US.
There was no negotiating with Satan:
    COLOSSIANS 2:15
15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
    ************************************
    1 CORINTHIANS 15:55-57
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the LAW.
57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory THROUGH our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus paid our ransom to free us from the LAW of sin and death by CONDEMNING SIN so that sin could no longer condemn us:
    ROMANS 8:1-4
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ JESUS HATH MADE ME FREE FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, CONDEMNED SIN in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
    ROMANS 3:24
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the REDEMPTION that is in Christ Jesus:
    25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation THROUGH FAITH in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the FORBEARANCE of God;
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: THAT HE MIGHT BE JUST, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

If he only paid the consequence, death, then why does any die if Jesus took care of death as the consequence?

CARM Videos YOU SAID:, “If he only paid the consequence, death...”
REPLY: Re-read my post that’s NOT what I said.
I clearly said He paid an “EQUIVALENT consequence” of our debt.
Take note of the word “equivalent.”
