    Cathedral. To me just as groundbreaking as Eruption. Who ever thought to play a guitar like that to get such a beautiful sound before Edward?? Nobody. Incredible.

    • @gib59er56
      @gib59er56 Год назад +29

      WTF thinks to set an echo and delay pedal to a speed then matches that speed exactly with their fretting hand , doing hammer-ons and pull-offs in a major scale while using his picking hand to open and close the volume knob in perfect synch as well??!?! The sound that comes from the speakers is like a pipe organ playing a classical piece that sounds like J.S. Bach. One crazy, geeky, half mad guy named Edward Van Halen, is who. WHO DOES THAT!!!!!?????? THAT IS INSANE!!!!! And it is heavenly.

    • @gib59er56
      @gib59er56 Год назад

      @@LuneyTune72 No. Howe did nothing anywhere or anyway near what Ed did in Cathedral. Who the hell told you that? That is about as far from Howe as can be. He used zero effects and played hollow body guitars. He might add some effects thru the board, or rather the guys mixing would MAYBE add an effect. Ed is set on a chorus speed, an echo setting and rotating his volume knob at perfect time with his hammer ons and pull offs. Nobody ever did that before and never will again. Jesus Christ, do me a favor and punch whoever told you this crap in the teeth for dumbo of the century

    We knew how great they were THEN. It was a special moment in history. Eddie was an alien magician. Not since have new albums been so eagerly anticipated. Every Van Halen record was like a Christmas present you couldn't wait to open. You couldn't wait to hear what Eddie had done NOW. Every album was a revelation of entirely new possibilities with the guitar. And, the sound. God Almighty, their sound. Eddie and Al. The bell-like harmonies. And, the sense of humour and fun about them. They were perfect. We were so damn blessed.

      I love the whole album, covers and all. My 2nd favorite behind VH ll. My favorite song on Diver (if I had to choose) would be "Full Bug", it's VH hitting on all cylinders.

    • @DaveRucci
      @DaveRucci 6 лет назад +3

      bwdrums1 hey man. Yeah I love this LP too. Was the 2nd VH album I ever bought after first getting 1984 when it came out. I kinda got their LPs backwards. Lol. Full Bug is a great tune, I love its energy. Part of the driving force of that song is that Alex is doing double kick? Secrets is still my favorite. I think challenge wise from a guitarists standpoint (most guitarists would argue this w me) the most difficult Ed Piece to play on the LP is the intro to Hang Em High. Sounds easy enough but it’s all alternative picking and unless you’re really good at that’s its gonna sound like shit.
      And I know what you mean about the covers. They’ve all been Halenized and are great in their own right, altho my least fav cover is Dancin in the Street. When I was much younger and I wanted to get charged I used to stand in front of my speakers and just about max out my volume, then I’d play the intro buildup into Where Have All the Good Times Gone. I never knew exactly how loud it would be at times with the cymbal sizzle and guitar volume swell but it was always so awesome to just hear my ears crack at the drums and guitar opening, and then when the bass and full drums hit it was like an awesome explosion of Van Halen-y crunchy goodness!

      @donsmith5385 6 лет назад

      Robert Whyst I like how you put words in my mouth, is that why when you called me a moron it does not appear here? Travis Bean did not make the necks for Kramer. Kaiser Aluminium made them for Kramer. I doubt that Travis Bean had a foundry either. Check your sources, if you can’t see the aluminum neck on this guitar is set ups as a 12 string, get your eyes checked, you are missing out on lots of shit.

    • @AtienzaLouie
      @AtienzaLouie 6 лет назад +1

      Just disputing you claim that Kramer did not use real wood on aluminum necks, which is untrue. I've seen them with walnut and maple inserts, as well as other woods. It wasn't done for tone; it was done to a) make the neck lighter than the solid aluminum on a Travis Bean, and b) give the neck a more "natural" not cold feel.

    Thank you Van Halen Archive for this and many other videos you put out there! I don't care if it was Dave singing, Except for the last round of Van Halen. Sammy Hagar. Which is my favorite along with Gary Cherone! Time passes! Things change!! Hell, Ed wanted Chrissy from the pretenders to sing for Van Halen! I'd loved to have seen that!!! Change is inevitable over time! Stay closed minded? Or enjoy changes in bands, Life, Whatever!! People now!! As with myself, Wouldn't care who was singing now! As long as we could see Ed play again!!!

    Saw Van Halen in 82 on the Diver Down tour and the thing that really screwed it up for me was that Roth had so much echo in his mic it was ridiculous... The band was tight and amazing as usual ...

    That double neck Eddie is playing is a fascinating guitar. I mean, in most respects, it looks like the type of Superstrat he helped popularize, but the upper neck appears to be an aluminum one with a forked headstock, like you'd see on '70's Kramers.
    Also, I never really noticed this before, but that solo on "Secrets" reminds me of Jeff Beck.

    Damn. Never saw the double axe. Dave's voice is amazingly good. Hitting the high notes.

    Van Halen with DLR,is the soundtrack of most rockers in the late 70s and most of the 80s! In movies,radio, or TV!

    Don't know why this didn't remain a setlist staple. Secrets is one of their best songs. Great to see that doubleneck - so ugly it's beautiful.
