- Ford has opened pre orders for the free NACS/J3400 to CCS charging adapter! That means soon Ford Mach Es and Lightnings will be Supercharging at V3 stations. Rivian broke news that they are able to NACS supercharge starting in March
The real game changer are places like Harris Ranch, Kettleman City in California as well as Quartzsite Arizona. Those mega sites just became far more useful. I would expect Supercharger mega sites to open up along Interstates throughout the country. That would help get rid of charging anxiety.
It’s a good start. People nowadays want everything to happen very quickly but the reality is that it just doesn’t happen like that. This opens the possibility and makes DC fast charging competitive.

When will MB EQ-series be able to charge at Tesla V3 Superchargers?
2:55 that's because while v3 use a slighly modified CCS protocol, v2 Superchargers use Tesla's own propriatary one. v2 SC will never be CCS/NACS compatible (until their hardware gets renovated into v3/4).
While the older V1/V2 stations used a modified CHAdeMO CAN bus for communication, it would be simple to upgrade the hardware to also support PLC communication. It's worth noting that apparently not all V3 stations support PLC yet as some changes need to be made to early V3 stations.
I'm wondering if the rental car companies (Hertz, Avis, etc.) are going to be reaching out to Ford so that these can be used on their Ford EV rentals too.
Fleet customers supposedly will get adapters too.

Alex - if I’m about to install a level two charger in my garage do you recommend waiting until they are all native NACS chargers? I really would like to use the Enphase charger to go with my solar on my roof. Thanks!
Honestly I wouldn't worry. Adapters are easy and will be around for a really really long time. Use whichever charger works best with your setup. I like the Tesla NACS/J1772 wall charger, but if you want to integrate with your solar setup just go with the Enphase one now.

Unless this is a deliberate limitation planned by Tesla, I don't see why a "smart" adapter can't be made that has simple electronics in it so that it can talk to the earlier V2 and V1 Tesla Superchargers, and translate that protocol to CCS. That doesn't seem like a very complicated engineering feat in my mind
Great that other manufactures can charge there EV's at Tesla chargers, my question is how quickly will they adapt and put future vehicle charge ports in the correct locations?

Long cables are a maintenance and charger reliability night mare. From the many none Tesla charges I have looked at, long cables are a major problem as people don't replace them correctly and they get damaged. Better Tesla keep the cables the ideal length as they are now and none Tesla manufactures put their charge ports in the correct location.
@@universeisundernoobligatio3283 The problem with that is: customers prefer the connector in the front of the vehicle. Survey after survey (including here on ABG) most EV owners and intenders prefer the plug up front. That's exactly why Tesla is adding longer cables. If you really wanted a short cable experience, then in the immediate center of the front would allow for the shortest cable.
Hopefully Ford is providing a can opener to more their charge port to the ideal location.

So it is far far away the situation when a Ford EV will have the same number of choices to DC fast charge as a modern Tesla has: old Superchargers, V2, V3, V4 Superchargers, any public CCS1 station via adapter and applet, even Chademo with an older adapter. Besides lots and lots of destination AC chargers based on NACS plus J1772 with adapters are also usable by Teslas.

This is a cheap imitation from Alibaba LOL, but the Tesla one is the same inside.
Product cost only sets a floor for retail pricing to consumers. Bear in mind, tooling for production molding is very expensive so when low volume, it may add $50 or more cost per unit. They charge $250 because that’s what people are willing to spend.
Have you seen the ridiculous price for the breakaway emergency adapter offered for NACS? Pepper spray costs much less.
Those $250 include the replacement of the car's charge port controller if necessary.

Dumb question: if these are dumb adapters, could you not have a dumb CCS extension cable that was male on one end and female on the other that you could keep in your lightning to allow you to not take up an extra space at the supercharger?
In theory yes, but it would not be supported. The main reason is that the cables need to be liquid cooled for safety. You could use thicker conductors instead of liquid cooling but we'd be talking about a big heavy cable for 500A charging.

The Ford adapters are basically the same as one from the Tesla Magic Docks. And that's because Tesla if providing the adapter to Ford. On the Out Of Spec Podcast, the Ford representative stated that the adapters will start shipping by the end of March 2024.
And that adapters looks overly cheap, with the cables much too thin for a constant 500 amps. Must be some cheap Chinese made adapter that won't last too long.
I'm not sure what you mean when it comes to the current capacity. Internally the adapters just use a metal bar that's more than capable of handling 500A.
@@EVBuyersGuide I see. So it uses the two metal pins you took out? Why so many of those thin cables then? I know you mentioned one was for temperature sensing, so what are the others for?
