Damn what a movie production. Created by the animation studio that prints money, focused on the video game equivalent of Mickey Mouse from the company that also prints money. This movie was of course going to be a super success. It has already trounched every other animated movie in EXISTENCE over profits. And while families and fans have been ecstatic over all the soundtrack easter eggs, and the Nintendo IP references. Critics, or at least cynical ones, disagree. Some people call it mid. Basic. Simple. Predictable. Leading us all to question what even is the point of movies, and movie reviewers if no one can agree. Well, since I am clearly in the middle of this debate, here's my two cents on the whole matter. This is Why The Super Mario Bros Movie Conflicts Me...

Princess Peach just felt too perfect....that's my biggest complaint with this movie. She doesn't have to be a total damsel in distress but at the same time make her vulnerable! Let her make a mistake that leads to some character growth!
A great opportunity for this was that obstacle course! Apparently in the story she got it on the first try originally. Would it had truly been a crime against feminism to show a flash back of younger Peach struggling with the same obstacles that Mario did?

    • @railroader2431
      @railroader2431 Год назад +9

That’s the one thing for me. Peach was a good character, but she really toes the line at times.
Maybe in the sequel they could make her a bit more flawed, perhaps a bit more akin to her game self.

The only injury Peach got in the entire movie was from Kamek tasering Toad. That was like the most 'intense' struggle she ever faced during the movie, and then she's back to kicking ass a couple minutes later with the ice flower. She's much like Diane Foxington from Bad Guys tbh, both are superwomen who are better at everything than everyone else in the movie and have little to no growth or struggle while everybody else is clawing their way up to glory and getting their asses kicked.

I really liked the movie. All the references and little details they added felt like they came from a place of love and celebration of the Mario franchise rather then a place of cynicism. It was simple love letter to the fans while also appealing to a wide demographic audience without sacrificing it’s identity and staying true to the games.

  • @EPPicstuff
    @EPPicstuff Год назад +14

It felt like a direct adaptation of the feel of games for better or worse. They didn't try to make the plot any deeper than the games' story already is.
Shigeru Miyamoto's approach when he makes games is to focus strictly on the gameplay itself, to make it as fun as possible. It's been clear from interviews that story tends to be the least emphasized aspect of his games, to the point that fellow directors have to sneak in the more complex deeper stories (like Rosalina's backstory in galaxy).
Paper Mario Fans have been struggling with this fact for years.
So the Mario Bros movie doesn't focus on trying to send a thematic message.
What it is though, is a really fun movie the whole way through.

I saw this in IMAX, and I loved it. the overly fast pacing is my biggest, but also, really only problem with the movie. I would have loved a deeper story and greater character arcs, but I don't think that's what Nintendo was going for or that it was really needed. They wanted this movie to be pure, unadulterated fun, just like the games, and in that respect, they succeeded beautifully. It's got amazing animation, a beautiful, nostalgic soundtrack, awesome references, colorful action and great, actually funny humor. In addition to Jack Black's incredible performance as Bowser and his banger song, "Peaches". It's definitely the best movie Illumination has put out yet, apart from _Despicable Me._

I think there's a difference between silly and dumb that some people can't see. Mario is an inherently silly franchise, but it's not (generally) dumb. It seems like this movie leans into the silly in a very deliberate and thought out manner. But because it's definitely very silly, a lot of critics just saw dumb.

Between Nintendo putting a tight rein on Illumination and the current state of cinema in general, I think we came out ahead with this one. Plus they had to make it appeal to everyone from age 5 to 55, you have to expect it to be on the lighter side, but they also left room for more complex sequels. It's just nice to have a movie that is exactly what it says it is, did anyone really want Peach to be the main lead?

They wanted to make something super complicated, but they didn’t have enough time to do so,

Before the younger bunch say Bowser apologizing is growth, he would have burned the whole lot there alive when let out. At the end of the movie, every character is better off, not a better person. Peach also did WAY too much in the breakup scene. I get making her good at fighting, but not making her a goddess. The last thing I want to bring up is the Kart scene. It’s not bad at all, but feels like it’s only there for toys. Peach could have been captured by Bowser, like in the video game originally. Bowser’s song could have been after that as well, so it would not feel shoehorned in.

1.) Everything happens so fast--I think the movie needed to be 10-20 minute longer with added scenes. I would've loved more time with Mario, Peach, and Toad before they got to the Kongs. Have them get chased by a Koopa Patrol through the Tosterena or something.
2.) The finale is a bit lackluster. The lack of memorable Bowser theme and with how short the fight lasts makes the final battle less epic than Mario's usual final boss fights

I think the critics are so caught up with what makes a "good" and innovative movie with things like a complex character and story, that sometimes they forget that a formulaic and predictable movie can still have a lot of charm and still be overall fun, which at the end of the day is exactly what mario fans were probably looking for in the first place.
I think in this case the critics shouldnt be listened to, because the movie isnt made for them and many of them are too busy being film critics to be mario critics.

This movie was pure unbridled FUN, the very definition of fun in fact. However, I do agree with some criticisms you have about the movie, but honestly? I feel like it outweighs nearly everything you mentioned that was negative about it, it was simple, sweet, action packed and very entertaining. Cheers!

One of my favorite stupid jokes in the entire movie HAS to be Donkey Kong’s introduction.
You get this epic arena set piece, with barrels and girders reminiscent of the original Donkey Kong game. Combat-craving Apes are chanting in the stands as the enemy is revealed. And all of a sudden… A giant shadow jumps into the arena, and the DK Rap from DK64 starts blasting. The tone shift is so immediate that it got a chuckle out of me, and the DK Rap did the rest, giving me the “It’s so STUPID!! WHY IS THIS FUNNY?” While also dying of laughter internally.
Overall the movie isn’t something grandiose or life-changing, rather it’s what a person expects from Nintendo: an almost guaranteed fun time.

This movie is for Mario fans
And there are TONS of Mario fans
The visuals are great, the story is passable, the soundtrack is wonderful
But like... there's kinda little substance outside of that, plus it has some odd pacing issues, a lack of transitionary scenes that just leaves no breathing room
So it's a fun watch, but it isn't what I would consider a good movie cause I value storytelling. And again, it only really works for people that know about Mario as, like, a whole thing, all the references for it to really make sense and enjoyable

The biggest problem critics seem to have with this, is the lack of plot. It’s a Super Mario Bros movie. Ultimately it will boil down to Mario beating Bowser to save Peach. That’s literally the plot of the games with some Luigi and Peach as heroes as well in some of them. It’s like everyone who complained about the end of War of the Worlds. Yes. They were killed by germs. That’s the story, bro.

I thought the movie was kinda cute ... but over-rated. I think we've just had a lot of bad movies in the last decade and so a decent one seems great in comparison ;) It got about three laughs from me, all were lines by Jack Black's Bowser. The easter-eggs and nostalgia were a big part of the charm and I don't think that's enough to build a great film on. I thought the lack of any character arcs and the mid plot was a weakness. It felt like a long stream of memes to me more than a journey.
I don't think it's a very good movie, but at least it was fun.

It's a fun movie but after it's done I felt like it was missing a lot. I wanted more character moments and to see at least a bit of a plot. I'm hopeful for the future but I definitely think was fun but I think the references being a lot of the fun is a problem because if you rewatch it the references are gonna get old fast.
I do wanna see what they do next. If they make another movie like this but with a better narrative I would flip cause that would be the perfect mario movie.

personally i love this film. its so much fun to watch, the mario world looks so much more epic, the music is really damn good, and it has a story that fits. i really don't get why critics are hating it. most of them dont even say spasific reasonings too. they ithor complain how bad it is or how others were enjoying it. and there biggest complaint is the story and passing. the passing i can agree it's bad, but story. have they ever played a mario game? mario doesnt really have a story besides plumers getting sucked down a pipe to the mushroom kingdom wile trying to stop bowser. that's litterly it. i'm fine with a film eather way IF ITS ENTERTAINING. sure you can have a good story to make it more complex, but you gots to make it atleast enjoyable to watch. they thought that this was going to be the next puss in boots 2. sometimes things dont need to be the next big thing. sometimes films can just bring good vibs and relaxation, and that is what nentendo was trying to do. they new how populer mario is. so they didn't need to make a perfect story. they just needed it to be entertaining and opealing to your imagination. like i have never seen a film make a world seem so life like sense avatar. i'm fin with the film. it doesnt deserve the hate that it got from people who takes everything so seriously. it just needed to be chill. thats why i like it so much

It was the Princess Peach movie. Mario and Luigi were made into bumbling idiots that did nothing. They almost weren't needed in order to tell pretty much the same story.
