Pixar's Elemental is out! And the marketing tells us that it was absolutely TERRIBLE. And even worse, I can't even watch it even if I wanted to! What's going on to make Elemental so awkward, and what are our thoughts having actually seen it? Well in an odd twist of fate, this movie turns out to be far better than expected. And yet here I am, pirating it. Cause yes, I Pirated Elemental And This Is Why...

I honestly pity the director behind this movie because he seem like a nice guy and his parents passed away during development of Elemental so this film really means a lot to him. Too bad everything went wrong from the marketing to the reviews and now he has both “the good dinosaur” flop and “elemental” flop on his belt making me feel like he will be fire soon.
Edit: Looking back after Elemental's newly found success it's honestly bizarre what the first impressions were back then, (myself included). This is one of the reasons why I try to actively avoid first impressions like this. That being said I'm glad Elemental is doing well and while we don't know if it broke even or not, thanks to other sources of revenue it will still be a profitable film and I do hope this can be a step forward in Pixar's recovery.

The director based this movie off his own parents being Korean immigrants and dealing with xenophobia and building a life for themselves. Personally this film was kind of a Bad Guys scenario for me, where although the general story is a bit generic, sure, the visuals, characters and way the story is told is what made it fun and surprisingly entertaining. Plus, you pointed out some other really nice aspects of the film which while they don’t quite make it a Pixar classic do bring it pretty close to the feeling of some of Pixar’s best. I’m so mad the marketing team did it dirty because we know Disney will use an original idea flopping as their excuse to pull out a TON of sequels on us. I really hope either the fans of the film can help spread the word that this film isn’t actually too bad, or the marketing team manages to pull together something more interesting for this film before it leaves theaters because this personally was a pretty enjoyable watch.

My two biggest issues with the movie are 1. They never show how they fixed the water issue, Firetown could still have another flash flood after the first one subsided bc we weren't shown it being fixed. and 2. When she told her dad that the store wasn't her dream I think he came around too quickly, the whole movie we were shown how she was afraid of not being good enough or not wanting to run the shop and her dad just came around so quickly, like that wasn't an issue for him, when the entire movie that's all he talked about. I feel like he would've had a bigger reaction and then come around, they just wanted to wrap that storyline up too quickly

I think the father thing is realistic, she was worried about what he thought but she didn't know what he thought cause people ain't mind readers, the father was probably just talking about it and not really considering anything else, not intentionally.

I think it's only unrealistic for bad parents or ones who struggle with understanding and change, and that's not how the parents here are. He might have his flaws, but being an immigrant (that faced major change and uncertainty) was integral to the character and story. The shop was important to him because of the life it gave them, and Ember had up until that point wanted to take over, so he shared her enthusiasm about it. She assumed she was indebted to him and that it would break his heart, but the reality was that he just was glad that she is able and wanting to pursue a good life as a 2nd gen, even if it's different. It's a privilege that that not all have been afforded. It also broke the cycle, in that he was supportive of her decision versus his dad that disapproved and had never heard from since.
So it's a little bit of her assuming things and having that weigh on her, as well as a mini character arc for the dad who had seemingly been judgmental and kind of 'stuck in a bubble' from our pov. Definitely not realistic for all children of immigrants, but this story doesn't only exist in fiction either.

The attention to detail really reflects the world through the eyes of a minority. Ember's parents, by every possible indication, weren't just "some" of the first... they WERE the first... and I find that implication even more impactful. It's not that the city ignored Fire-people, it's that they simply weren't there. Ember's family founded Firetown... which makes the city living conditions that much more real. Here we have a city with a shortcoming, they could easily resolve, but they are simply to busy, lazy, or otherwise involved with their individual lives to fix so much as a canal, a lock-door, or even start initiatives to incorporate fire-people. It's crazy how real that societal hurdle is for literally everyone trying to do anything. It's an incredibly good writing, and expertly presented.

Two, the plot felt rushed and it was probably because of the focus on effects of the characters, which don't get me wrong, it's really good. There was also no tension on the more emotional scenes or it was too predictable as to what was going to happen next. Third, the earth and air elements literally play no role in this story, the only interaction played was Clod wanting to take ember out to that prom thing and the cloud lady at the air ball game. Lastly, the characters needed more explanation, like how there's water people and just water, what's up with that? What about the very few scenes where ember touches something very reactive to fire yet it just doesn't react (the very beginning of the movie).
It's very sad how this guy wanted to tell his story through this movie only to be hit with a very negative community. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the movie as a non-harcore disney/pixar fan and I personally gave it a 8.5/10.

Yes, the love story Is still important to the plot and is paced pretty well, but the heart and focus of this movie is seeing Ember realize what she thought she wanted in life was less something she actually wanted, and more something she felt she HAD to do. Seeing her arc and the parallels between her life and her father's was something I was NOT expecting from this movie, yet it was actually executed very well.

I actually really enjoyed this film a lot! When it was announced only with a rough drawing I still was so hype for this to develop and release. Then we got the first teaser and it looked really promising, if not at least for its visually pleasing style and characterizations of each element type (even if we never get to see a 1:1 recreation of the teaser in the film). Then we got the awful trailers (which to be honest I think my hype for the movie cancelled out any negativity surrounding the film) which were definitely cringey, badly edited, to coincide with the fact that no one really has been to a Pixar film in theatres in a while, and the last one they may have seen was just so mediocre that maybe they just want to completely revert to Disney+ drops to save some money, or because that’s just what they’ve become accustomed to.
Regardless, I really hope this film can make back its budget within the release date windows worldwide so the movie at least won’t completely flop. Please go support this film as much as you can, and if you can’t do so at the moment, spread the word and when it does inevitably comes to Disney+, stream the heck out of it so Disney can see that Pixar and it’s original films are still worth investing in!

I wasn't very interested in this movie but seeing this it looks fun, weirdly it has hardly any screenings at all (the premiere is 1.7. Here and I found only 7 days where it's shown) near where I live especially undubbed... But it's kind of funny how "Disney did that" isn't only ruining things for foreign movies/shows but also their own/subsidiaries..!

Honestly, a lot of the dislike for the movie is simply due to the horrendously unfitting advertising. You can't really blame people for disliking a movie for not being to their expectations if those are caused by the advertising

It’s also why I almost pirated the “Strange World” cause in summary, one of the main characters wants to be in a gay relationship with some other main character but I didn’t even want to do that, look be gay all you want but this is a kids movie, teach your kids about relationships as a whole when they turn 12 not 4

I think another issue with this movies sales in the US (I haven’t finished you video yet) is that there are WAY to many big box office movies in theaters right now or coming. People are getting burnt out for theater movies. We got, little mermaid, the flash, Spider-Man across the spider verse, gaurdians of the galaxy 3, fast X, elementals, Barbie, Indiana Jones 5, Mission impossible, that movie about the atomic bomb, ect. I don’t know why Hollywood overbooked theaters like this cause they’re overlapping each other and hitting their profit (especially since majority of those movies aren’t going to get IMAX screens)

Its so odd its happening this way when for the longest time it was mainly horror movies in theaters too. Do they not realize not everyone is into horror and having their's in the running would be a great investment longterm?

It's a flop not because it's bad but because the tropes have been done to death and in much better format (Zootopia with the racism, various other films with forbidden love) and the fact that the "they're not dangerous" thing doesn't work here when the elements can all kill each other with a single touch.

My great grandparents had that situation of getting their and their children's names changed when coming to my country!
Edit: and my mom couldn't name my brother any of the names she wanted to, but she wanted to name him NATIVE names so it's a different kind of discrimination, literally names native to my country and they considered them too "exotic"

I just finished watching this movie and it was beautiful. It made me hope to see more, because the world and story pulled me in from the beginning and didn't let go. It felt so personal and lovely. My heart was breaking and rejoicing for the characters in a way that hasn't happened for a long time. I admit I hadn't really looked into it besides a little snippet during the previews from the last movie I went to see. I personally don't like watching the previews more than I need to so I can enjoy the movie more or less as is, without being spoiled.
I related to both the main characters. I was surprised to see that many people were calling it a 'flop' the likes of which would only be close to 'the good dinosaur'. I've often found that the movies which I favor the most are usually the 'flops'. It's sad, because out of all the movies to be made into a live action there are three that I really enjoyed animated, but I think would be great as live action. Those three might have also been 'flops' Atlantis, Treasure Planet, and Road to El Dorado. All three of them were great movies and still remain some of my favorites. There's SO much potential for them. We have underwater, space, and an adventure journey bro friendship.
In the end, I don't care what anyone says, I loved this movie. If they made a second one tomorrow, I'd be out to see it so fast, I'd be first in line.

I think the advertising was good because it didn't give the plot away before I saw the movie. It gave the premise of the world and left the story telling to the movie. To me, that's refreshing given most movies are either remakes or the trailers expose any plot twists or even the endings.

Yeah I got to see an advanced screening (it doesn’t come out for 2 weeks where I’m from) and I just left early outta being underwhelmed.
To be clear everyone in the theatre was there through a membership so not paying but probably still profiting Pixar. The screen was sold out on paper but I arrived near the end of the UP short and it was 3/4 empty.
Edit: to be double clear this was a blind screening where they didn’t say the film and it’s the same way I got to see incredibles II 3 months early. I’m not opposed to finishing this film but I wasn’t paying and had better things I could have been doing. Because no one pays for these thing they often have high bookings, low turn out and at least a few walk outs

One small issue though. Racism irl is bad because... humans are all LITERALLY the same, thus discriminating based on skin color is illogical and pointless. But in this movie, fire people are discriminated against because they are LITERALLY MADE OF FIRE, the fundamental flaw in this movie is that is makes more logical sense to have them be separated because one, water people could accidentally kill fire people, and two, fire people accidentally burning shit. This is not a good "why racism is bad" movie because it misses the entire point of why racism is bad in the first place!

I think the whole: "It's not my dream dad, it's yours." is actually a nod to the fact that the reason why you see so many Asian kids from Immigrant families ( and in many cases, not even immigrant families.) becoming doctors / lawyers / surgeons is because it is something that is expected of them more or they risk disappointing their family which can sometimes go as far as being disowned. My partner is Japanese and the parents happiness and approval is put above that of your own 9 / 10
