    We have been boycotting Amazon for some time now for ethical reasons. It is becoming more difficult to find anything on line that isn't sold through Amazon so recently my husband ordered something there. When he finished the transaction a message appeared that said we were being "given" (quotation marks arae mine) a free month trial of Prime. We did not request it and never gave a preference of a monthly or yearly membership but now it is showing Prime membership under our account information with the same message of a free month of Prime. Are we to assume that we have inadvertently signed up for the free month membership?

    We share subscriptions across the family. Whenever I want something from Amazon I ask my sister who has prime and just transfer her the money.

    • @BeCleverWithYourCash

      That's a good way to cut the cost!

    • @kramnull8962
      @kramnull8962 Год назад

      Be very careful with this. Say your sister has a sub for PRIME. And she cancels the membership, but keeps her account. Amazon can always charge your card for her membership. This happens if she still has Autopay checked in her preferences. A little hidden scheme/scam Amazon uses to draft money from any card they want...

    Really thought provoking video here Andy as Amazon has become a service we all have for FOMO reasons. If you stop and look at it objectively then your words make sense. It’s convenient and a lazy way to shop. I’m going to switch to monthly sub only when I need it moving forwards. Cheers again

      Amazon only really allows one type of membership with two ways to pay it. The monthly membership is still an annual membership. You will find that you will still be charged the monthly membership fee (here in the UK it's £7.99) I know because I've done it! If you're a student and you meet certain criteria, you can get a 6 month sub.

    Thanks for the video Andy, in my situation I have found Amazon to be excellent. Shielding for what seems like forever, I’m in the at risk category and having not been in a shop since July last year it is totally essential along with home food deliveries from Tesco etc. Maybe it’s something to consider in the future though.

      For me it’s an ethical rather than money saving decision, but I do think it’s worth thinking about - you can still get almost all those life’s pleasures elsewhere for a similar amount of cash and minor if any inconvenience.

    I've thought about this, but won't this actually be bad for smaller companies? A smaller company can sell on amazon without much investment, but creating and running an ecommerce store and then doing all the advertising would be quite expensive for many. And going to local stores, they'll stock items from bigger distribution brands, not smaller companies. Even if it's the corner shop, they'll still sell items from better known brands.
    Amazon isn't perfect, but I'm not sure that cutting amazon would be that helpful for many independent brands.

    • @BeCleverWithYourCash
      @BeCleverWithYourCash  3 года назад +1

      It’s worth looking to see if the third party traders on Amazon have other online outlets. Often they do, from their own website to eBay. Going direct can actually be cheaper (Prime often isn’t available) and they get to keep more of their profits.
      It won’t work every time, but it’s worth trying

    • @deim
      @deim 3 года назад

      @kaleido scope many smaller companies don’t have a website of their own. I think many users don’t really understand how Amazon works. For many, Amazon storefront is the only place where they sell. Just like many creators only sell on Etsy or eBay.

    So oops they applied it to other accounts,...that I can't access,... cause I don't have a cell phone?
    I talked to 4 people in 4 days about an order they could care less,.....I'd recommend shopping else where.
    They added a delivery charge and tax and my debit was $3.00 short and they didn't care,....they can stick prime.

    Around half of all products on Amazon are sold by small businesses. They’re relying on Amazon as a platform for their business.
    I get the opposition to Amazon working conditions etc. but a lot of the time you are supporting small business when shopping on Amazon. Especially if you’re choosing them over larger, high street retailers.

    • @BeCleverWithYourCash

      Though I’m doing a year without Amazon in 2021, I would often check if I could go direct with the third party sellers listen on Amazon. Often I could, and often it was cheaper or the same amount - but crucially they’ll have kept more of the profit

    • @MRAROCKERDUDE
      @MRAROCKERDUDE 3 года назад +1

      @@BeCleverWithYourCash A lot of the time I've found that third party sellers have no website or untrustworthy-looking sites.
      If there's ever a problem with an Amazon order, you can go direct and Amazon will side with the customer the vast majority of the time (instant refund from them etc.).
      So there's that added layer of protection with Amazon, making me more confident shopping with smaller online sellers.

    • @MRAROCKERDUDE
      @MRAROCKERDUDE 3 года назад

      Plus the fact that small businesses tend to stock their products in Amazon warehouses so they can ship free, next day etc. You can't usually get the same level of shipping service with third party sellers since they just don't have Amazon's logistical expertise.

    • @BeCleverWithYourCash
      @BeCleverWithYourCash  3 года назад

      Yes, the returns process can be pretty decent with Amazon so it's one thing you might sacrifice shopping elsewhere.
      But it's worth remembering you don't need Prime for returns - so you can still cut Prime, which might make you buy less things, but shop occasionally at Amazon.

      YEP, supporting truck drivers, packers, SO many ppl. And for rural ppl, reducing traffic- there are many good things that online places CAN DO but only Amazon is doing them and taking over givng no real choice in the matter of how those services are exectuted; the dependence means the quality of them goes down along with consumer expectations- they are TOO big for their britches.

    Clearly the point of this video was to try and persuade people to use Amazon less; I think most people can manage cancelling a subscription on their own. So in that sense for me it felt a bit preachy, am I supposed to feel guilty for using an 'evil' company like Amazon? Personally I don't think you can blame Amazon for being a successful company, which inevitably leads to them taking away market share from other retailers. Rather than being propped up, I think struggling retailers need to either improve or fail so that the capital be put to better use. Enjoy your vids, but will have to disagree on this one

    • @BeCleverWithYourCash

      Thanks for this Josh.
      I think it clearly is a video showing people how to cancel, but there’s also some context around it.
      There are lots of reasons to use Amazon less. For me it’s some ethical considerations- but as I say at the start this video isn’t about that.
      The focus instead is on solid money saving reasons to ditch Prime that people often don’t consider - so I wanted share those before showing how to cancel.

      When one company dominates the market so much there is no way for smaller retailers to compete. If you destroy all competition (like they are doing) then that will lead to total control over the market and rising prices. Amazon cuts corners (tax evasion, workers rights, health and safety, "self employed" delivery drivers, exploitation of independent sellers), so we all pay for it in some way or another at the end of the day. That's not healthy competition.

    • @Josh95x
      @Josh95x 3 года назад +1

      @@StarRestless Monopolies can be a problem, but I would suggest that is for governments to solve I.e. close tax loopholes. Blame the game not the player. It's more a case of Amazon being able to undercut smaller companies. If they began rising prices then customers would start looking elsewhere and new companies would be created to fill that need
