    This week Greg takes a deep look at the brand new Deco M4 mesh wifi system - a system that is budget by price but premium by features. Previously Greg recommended Google Wifi as the best budget mesh system but it looks like TP-Link is coming after Google's crown!

    i got the deco m4 3pk but did not set it up yet. I have a gateway from internet provider here in Canada it has 4 ports in the back do I disable the wifi on the modem/gateway and bridge the deco . Secondly the main pc is wired to the modem via one of the ports will bridging disable it . the pc is not wireless. One deco will be wired to modem the other two in various place in the home . I do not want to by another router , hoping I can find something that will work.

    Hello,
    Does this mean that one can plug in an ethernet cable sometimes in unit nr. 2, and then it runs on the cabled connection - whereas it runs on the mesh-connection to nr. 1 the rest of the time (ethernet unplugged in 2) without changes of settings?

    if yo have existing devices ring products, smart plugs etc....when integrating this would you simply name the network the same as existing etc to avoid any down time etc....i think you know where im going ...really considering going with a mesh network...

    If price wasn't an option would you recommend the M4 or the M5?

    • @aaronwalker1974
      @aaronwalker1974 5 лет назад +1

      And does the M4 have a dedicated backbone channel?

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  5 лет назад +1

      They're both incredibly similar products. The M5 has slightly more total bandwidth capacity but that doesn't mean you'll get faster internet. Given how similar they are I'd save money and get the cheaper one. If you want a system with more features check out the M9+; it's a 2 piece, tri-band, AC2200 system with an amazing Trend Micro network security suite

    Still wondering
    with the ports on the back of the AP’s can I plug in and get a hardline connection through them? Say PC in other room, not talking about the main one plugged into the modem.
    Still haven’t really got a true answer about that.

  • @unrealfeedzz

    on this mesh systems, to be able to use the ethernet at it's best, you need to plug in ethernet from the modem or from the main router?

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  5 лет назад +1

      Not sure I completely understand your question but mesh systems are really wireless router replacements so it's always a good idea to plug then directly into the modem. Thanks for watching!

    • @unrealfeedzz
      @unrealfeedzz 5 лет назад

      @@TechnicallySpeaking eh, the ethernet ports on each of the routers, if I'm correct one is in and one is out, right? I know they are routers and that the main router is the one with the modem, but if you were to use ethernet, you have to plug in a cable coming from the modem? or they simply have lesser speeds? Right now i have a modem router combo, but I use ethernet, so if I were to hook up this on my home, will I able able to use the ethernet with the same speed on each router?
      Sorry if it's confusing but I really don't know how to word this out

    can i use this as the router itself?,connection it to a fibre modem directly and as a mesh wifi?

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  4 года назад

      No

    • @KingFozzie1
      @KingFozzie1 3 года назад

      Only if you put your isp router in bridge mode. Basically you turn it into a switch and let your deco handle the routing. Two routers is one network is a disaster. In my opinion configuring the decos as access points is the best option for must users.

  • @mchief190
    @mchief190 4 года назад

    Plan on getting this, I do need to ask though, will the overall internet speeds go down if I have like 3 Decos connected to it? I like my fast internet and really do not want it to be compromised. Thanks in advance.

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  4 года назад

      No. These aren’t repeaters so it doesn’t split the signal.

    Hello Greg, If I buy 6 of these will I be able to have my speed 180mbits on almost all places in my house if I place them in the right spots ? I have a maximum of 200mbits BTW.

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  5 лет назад

      Hey Yentl, unfortunately Greg passed away 6 weeks ago (this is Scott) but I'll take a shot at answering this.
      I wouldn't say you'd have that speed everywhere if you bought too many, actually, you could make it worse due to interference between having too many

    • @yentl8638
      @yentl8638 5 лет назад +1

      Technically Speaking seriously, wow?
      Well I have to cover only 2 floors BUT I have a long range because my house is kinda long and wide with two floors en then I have a big garden with in the garden a garage where I want to have wifi aswell so I would actually need atleast 4 devices to cover all the distance. Maybe I will buy netgears Orbi

    Hey man I just came across your video looking for some input on the tplink Deco P9 system. I was curious if you had any experience with that type of mesh wifi. I'm in a basement mostly and the wifi signal from the main router on the first floor is weak. Extenders suck and I need something inexpensive but fast. Amazon has the 3 pc kit for $200 right now and I'm tempted to buy it. Thank you in advance. -Aaron from NY-

    Is it ac1200 each or total 1200mbps?

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  5 лет назад

      The entire system is AC1200 which roughly translates to 1200Mbps. This includes the bandwidth from both 2.4Ghz (300ish Mbps) and 5Ghz (900ish Mbps). Keep in mind that is the total bandwidth available to serve all wireless clients and individual devices will see something like 70-200mbps depending on a bunch of factors

    So I have a question concerning google WiFi installation: I have a modem and a router from century link, do I have to ditch the quest router to be able to use the google WiFi router? Or can I connect the mesh to the quest router and use both?

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  5 лет назад

      With Greg being gone, I'm going to attempt to answer this. you need the modem for sure, but you don't the router from century Link. You can connect the modem to the new M4 system and boom, there you go.

      @@TechnicallySpeaking I'm thinking of home entertainment specifically a Yamaha receiver that has an Ethernet port but missing a remote control, I can install the Yamaha remote app and run the receiver through that. I am only able to afford phone with data plan at this time.
      Also mesh network would be a good way for small rural areas that have no internet available to them kind of like intranet, just a thought.
