Hey, would you ever do a video called something like... What if Dave Mustane was never kicked out of Metallica? And What would the band Megadeth be without Dave Mustane helping start Megadeth?
Also I have some Metallica and other Thrash, and Heavy Metal videos on my channel as well, you can feel free to check out. I'd like to know what you think. I did a ranking on the Metallica Albums recently this year, as well as I have an older one where I had a different ranking about 2 1/2 years ago in 2018.
Even more than that: James's guitar was in drop G#, while Kirk's was some really mental tuning (if anything, we're talking about Invisible Kid from St Anger)
Metallica's proof you don't need to tune low to be heavy, just creative. Sure low tuning sounds amazing but so does standard tuning stuff and it's about what you do with the tuning that counts
I recorded an EP recently in standard tuning for college and my fellow students were surprised and impressed how heavy it was. I'm a believer in you can make any tuning work if you know what you're doing, there is no limit only your own self doubt or lack of skill creatively.
Never even seen a need to detune when you can just get a 7-string. There may be one or two cases where a lower riff would be easier to play on an open string than on the low B string but I rarely seem to encounter this issue.
Can you talk about Tapes Recording tricks they use's ...sort of pitch and speeds influences....they use to record slower versions (tighter tempo) and speed it up till it reach the pitch of Eb or D# even Standard Em tunning with the low E drop to D#..... You know that kind of stuff...thanx
Sad But True in D was actually Bob Rock’s idea. The band was playing a ton of E, and Bob suggested that they tune down to D standard to get heavier sounds. Sad But True just happened to be the next song they were recording. They liked it in D standard, and it stuck.

It’s always baffling to me how that shy, skinny, ugly kid (with all due respect, love and admiration) 1:56 became the ultimate metal frontman... I mean, just listen to him in Seattle ‘89... 2 different human beings.👏🏽💪🏽🤘🏽
Keep those sponsor ads sincere and not distracting like these, and I'll watch them over and over again. You always have great content, and I love your respect to your audience
An other reason I thought of is that E standard tuning is by essence tighter than the other tunings. And so, it fits the speed and precision of thrash metal so well. When you tune down your guitar, the strings are more loose and thus the picking is more "wavy" but less precise, perfect for a groovy heavy sound. That's why it's great for albums with mid tempo songs like Load and Reload, even the Black album and Youthanasia to some extend. And so when Metallica returns to their thrash roots with death magnetic and hardwired they maybe tried to recapture this tightness by tuning to E standard again
Dude did you upgrade your camera? The video of you is looking smooth and luscious! BTW, would love to see a video from you about "What if Metallica had gotten John Bush to sing for them". If nothing else we could hear you talk about the time John Bush got onstage with Metallica and absolutely CRUSHED "The Four Horsemen".
James voice was still pretty high pitched in the kill em all days. He was only 19 when they recorded the album. Then he got older, his voice got deeper (not very noticeable compared to rtl but very noticeable compared to mop ajfa and the black album) and then his voice gave out. He likely tuned it to D cuz of how high pitched it was and how fragile his voice was at the time.
I've found out that lately your videos, mostly thanks to your good energy and humor, help me feel better when I need to relax a bit. Thanks, Andriy, very cool ))) Btw, smooth sponsoring, and of an actually interesting product, for a change.
I've always said by 92, his voice got weaker and softer for the long run. U can tell he didn't have that same power during 92. 93 his voice was gone. Also great u pointed out that he performed vocally demanding songs from the 80s, which is crazy. Didn't think he'd do that. And as of 2020, he covered Would? again..... That was a surprise
James now is in his second prime vocals. His range now is the biggest, because the lows are the strongest, the highs are still pretty much there, and the timbre in general is badass
Great video, I didnt know my favorite band ever even played below Eb, I thought Sad but true was their hardest hitting song (to me) and didnt expect it in drop D.
Actually most Metallica records (at least on the first four albums) are tuned up a little bit higher than E which gives it more tighter sound. On some AJFA rough mixes some like Eye of the beholder are even tuned up half way.
I’m hoping that they go down to Drop C or D for the next album at least for two to four songs. I think that variety would have helped Hardwired feel a little more diverse.
I disagree that the arrangements are less advanced than the early stuff. The early albums are basically just two guitars playing the same riffs. The Load era stuff has four or more guitar tracks on it. As a kid it was confusing trying to learn all the load stuff from books because of all the different parts. The riffs are definitely easier on load but the arrangements are crazy.
I’ve been creating a compilation of Metallica songs played in C#. See, in music theory when talking about E tuning it’s usually referring to the key of e minor. So by switching to C# you get E major in the shape of C# minor. It’s obviously really muddy by Metallica standards but it creates a sort of magic with their music where you downtune enough to be relevant in modern metal but not down tuned enough to not have any kind of coherency in the instrument sound. It’s a brutal tuning that lends well to older songs but not too muddy. It’s kind of a balance.
Bruh every single time I play half step down I just get a random urge to play a standard tuning song. Then 5 mins later I see a song I want to learn I go to some tabs then I see it’s a different tuning so I have to spend another 5 minutes putting my high E in hell
Andriy, you have become a true metallica historian. You being a fan AND a skilled musician makes you perfect for the job. Have the actual metallica contacted you yet?
Its odd that often those who are perfect as a fit are often the last to see it. Its also hilarious that Lars has the sense of self worth that far exceeds his abilty. James CAN br8ng the leads/ solos also and even put Hammett to shame, but has the clear understanding that the cornerstones of a great metal band are its riffs & percussions as a bedrock foundation. Not the leads. All this said, I would give my left nut to see either one of James teaming up with the smashing pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlain who in heavier pumpkins albums just fkn GOES OFF on the skins that is great at fusing jazz style percussions into heavy music. Chamberlain can easily produce a neil pert performance, only with no need for the drum set that was excess that resembled a fun park ride. I have seen Jimmy in concert take a basic trap set, add a couple of heavy kettles for extra mass and prove he IS a freak of nature drummer. I would have to imagine that if you took the heavy catchy riffs with solid groove and backed them up with similar talent on the percussions, I would easily bet the farm theyd produce a kick ass heavy album for the ages. Would love to see it happen.
