Didn't someone say the best interpretation of the song saga was: 1. Growing up finding how everyone around you did you wrong, blaming then and dubbing them unforgiven. 2. Finding someone who genuinely was helpful and trustworthy (laying beside them) but you get delusional and decide that that one person is also untrustworthy, metaphorically killing them and leaving. No, if they make another one they should either name it The Unforgiven IV or Forgiven or something. Image how bad it would've been if they named The Unforgiven III "The Unforgiv3n" lol. How they named ManUNkind has me worried though lol
The unforgiven is a jewel and was also my introduction for Metallica, and for many years my favorite song. Today is probably still in my top 10. Of course, this is after listening to all Metallica´s songs 10.000 times over 25 years. Great video!!!
I like the unforgiven iii. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't do a full band performance of it with the orchestra in S&M 2. It also has a great guitar solo. It's my favourite of the 3.
Omg Adrian, you are my brother. Unforgiven was what got me into Metallica too!!!! 10seconds on the music news and next day I bought all Metallica albums and never looked back :-)\
Definitely agree with you on the live version , I feel the same about Roam, I’ve watched the premier of those songs live and they were much closer to the album versions, but he never sang them the same way after that.
The unforgiven 1 speak my whole life the one metallica song that brings to real tears everytime I listen to it People always suprised when I tell that's my top #1 favorite metallica song and why I like them. I'm sure they expect me to say their more popular songs but it's actually songs like until it sleep and bleeding that speak to me the most
I'd definately love to see a breakdown of the stuff Jason erote while in Metallica (i.e. Blackened, My Friend of Misery, and Where the Wild Things Are; also his live bass jams for Misery and Wild Things are great, definately check them out, there are the full versions of what he wrote for those lines).
I already mentioned in another one of your videos, but goddamn the vocal bridge and the solo of Unforgiven III hit me really, really hard. The build-up of "Forgive me / Forgive me not", with James seemingly pleading to someone, just for the last one revealing the "Why can't I", the extended "me" with his voice at the limit, and then Kirk comes in and punches your soul in the face with his solo. And does that solo sound to me like a person having a breakdown, just lashing out their anger, frustration and sadness at themselves, at what they have become. With that said, I have to agree that The Unforgiven (I) is probably the best of the bunch, or at least the more "Metallica-y". But the lyrics of Unforgiven III, its theme, is the one that has sits closest to my heart; the representation of the maturation of the protagonist (be it James or not), now realising how blind had they been to the origin of their grievances, laying the blame on others when it was always within oneself, and how they struggle to make peace with themselves.
i think the piano on the unforgiven iii makes it for me... especially the way we see it performed at s&m². the fact that james chose to play without a guitar almost mimics the idea of that part (the interpretation that he's trying to forgive himself). the way he stands, completely open to the audience, is like this is his redemption.
Unforgiven 3 is actually my favorite Metallica song. It’s the first Metallica song I remember listening too, so it’s always going to have a special place in my heart.
each song tells its own story, but also seamlessly stitches itself together with the other two to tell a beautiful and complex novel, i may not like the second or third as much as the first, but they all hold important places in the band’s growth
I know people have already said this but Black: The Unforgiven Load: Reload: The Unforgiven II St. Anger: DM: The Unforgiven III Hardwired: New Album: The Unforgiven IV?
I would love to hear. 4Given. The end of the saga where the story crescendos at a place of peace. I would also love for it to be a 14 epic with solos of every instrument, possibly even ending with just vocals...
No, no and no... I live, I die, and I lived again fornthe unforgiven II.... and its because of the strong but depressing/sad melody and ofc, the lyrics. Its actually one of my all time favotire songs of metallica 🙌🏻 great video, as always... A Lurker! lol
I related very much to The Unforgiven when I was younger, but it's almost like I've followed the same frame of mind of James Hetfield over the years. When Unforgiven III was first released, I still related more to the original Unforgiven, maybe because James is over 20 years older than I am, so I hadn't matured enough to find the kind of self-awareness that he showed in the third one. But now I have, and I relate MUCH more to the Unforgiven III. I actually have nothing in common at all with the original anymore on a personal level. Unforgiven II was always an ok song to me, and it has grown on me over the years, but I and III are still my favourites.
Something I've been thinking about recently was that the unforgiven III has elements of rhyme of the anchient Mariner, not only does it have a sailing theme but it's telling a story, there are probably more than just that
Unforgiven 3 is my favorite. And I was lucky enough to see it played live in 2018 Lincoln Nebraska. I hope we get a final Unforgiven 4 whenever Metallica does there last album.
If you're interested in playing Unforgiven 2's riff in the original method, check out videos for "B-Bender Country Guitar". The guitar was engineered to make the sound that's on the album.
Your best video so far, i can say that it's the most waited video from me since the Unforgiven got me into Metallica as you.. Couldnt agree more with you about how bad they play The Unforgiven in their recent shows that it lost all of its beauty, i wish James still at least plays that small guitar riff before he start the song, Also u may want to check how James Played Unforgiven's 2 Riff in one of their Metallica's Mondays ( in Germany 2015, exactly before the part "lay beside me tell what i've done" ) i find much interesting, beautiful and touching? , keep up the good work Andriy!
Great breakdown. I like them all to varying degrees, but III is my favorite and II is my least favorite. The original has the best solo, and it’s one of Kirk’s highlights.
My personal order from the best to the worst is: 1, 3 and 2. The Unforgiven 1 was one of the first things I heard from Metallica (Nothing Else Matters was the first) and it´s very special for me. The Unforgiven 3 is completely different and unique. Great song and very underrated. And finally The Unforgiven 2. I used to like it, but now...
2>1>3 For me The Unforgiven 2 is the best song Metallica have ever recorded. Fantastic lyrics, great music and the last chorus with "Cause you're unforgiven to!". It's just perfect.
The part at 13:00 you mentioned, that might be a b bender guitar he was using from how he pulled it at the "bend". It'd be an odd choice for james to use but I think it sounds pretty good on that version
In spite of how people feel about Bob Rock, he sure did help pull a powerhouse of a guitar solo out of Kirk for the original Unforgiven. One of my top favorite guitar solos by him :)
Interesting as always, frriend. Even though I think the original Unforgiven is like better, my favorite would be part III. Every riff is so special, as you talked about the verse riff. Same feeling for the solo, I think the 1 is better but there is just something about the 3rd one. I love Unf 2 as well, but is a little below for me. Also, never noticed the hammer ons on U III verse riff, now I got to play it that way ALWAYS!
1 reflects on a growing child failing to live up to potential that outlookers had set out for him, so he blames them 2 reflects on a relationship (not necessarily husband/wife, but some form of emotional/loving relationship) that seems to be crumbling, so he blames her* (or the other him) 3 is an inner reflection on his own actions resulting in him living his life alone, left with only thoughts of blaming himself
The weird 'bend'that you replaced with a slide is probably performed on a 'B-Bender' telecaster. You pull the guitar down to activate a bend! Fascinating device! You can get G Benders too. 🤘🏼 love the channel. 🤘🏼

No, if they make another one they should either name it The Unforgiven IV or Forgiven or something. Image how bad it would've been if they named The Unforgiven III "The Unforgiv3n" lol. How they named ManUNkind has me worried though lol
Awesome videos, Andriy! I love watching everything you make, and especially for 18 great minutes
The Unforgiven 1 has one of my favorite solos. I love the scene showing it in the documentary
It's my favourite of the 3.
thanks for the in-depth vids
The best promo code I've ever seen
Omg Adrian, you are my brother. Unforgiven was what got me into Metallica too!!!! 10seconds on the music news and next day I bought all Metallica albums and never looked back :-)\
Definitely agree with you on the live version , I feel the same about Roam, I’ve watched the premier of those songs live and they were much closer to the album versions, but he never sang them the same way after that.
The unforgiven 1 speak my whole life the one metallica song that brings to real tears everytime I listen to it
People always suprised when I tell that's my top #1 favorite metallica song and why I like them. I'm sure they expect me to say their more popular songs but it's actually songs like until it sleep and bleeding that speak to me the most
The clean riff Kirk plays on U3 is absolutely beautiful, one of my favourite clean riffs of all time.
Anyone else get really excited when they see andriy upload
I'd definately love to see a breakdown of the stuff Jason erote while in Metallica (i.e. Blackened, My Friend of Misery, and Where the Wild Things Are; also his live bass jams for Misery and Wild Things are great, definately check them out, there are the full versions of what he wrote for those lines).
9:13 Andriy is actually sad about the missing notes. you are not alone my friend
This video is a masterpiece!! After classes I´m gonna finish watching it ;) Thanks for the good content, frrriend!
Ahh yes! The Unforgiven 3 verse riff, one of my favorites off of Death Magnetic
Great analysis andriy! Enjoyed the whole discussion and learned some new stuff i didn't know!
i think the piano on the unforgiven iii makes it for me... especially the way we see it performed at s&m². the fact that james chose to play without a guitar almost mimics the idea of that part (the interpretation that he's trying to forgive himself). the way he stands, completely open to the audience, is like this is his redemption.
Unforgiven 3 is actually my favorite Metallica song. It’s the first Metallica song I remember listening too, so it’s always going to have a special place in my heart.
Great video, as always!
each song tells its own story, but also seamlessly stitches itself together with the other two to tell a beautiful and complex novel, i may not like the second or third as much as the first, but they all hold important places in the band’s growth
Great video man!
I know people have already said this but
Black: The Unforgiven
Load:
Reload: The Unforgiven II
St. Anger:
DM: The Unforgiven III
Hardwired:
New Album: The Unforgiven IV?
“These... won’t give you an extra inch ” lol
Something I've been thinking about recently was that the unforgiven III has elements of rhyme of the anchient Mariner, not only does it have a sailing theme but it's telling a story, there are probably more than just that
Thank you, I hope I'd get more into that song with this video.
The guitar was engineered to make the sound that's on the album.
not only is unforgiven iii my favorite unforgiven, its also my favorite song ever
Yeayyy.new video.Hi frrriiiendds from Malaysia.
10:48 I know that gonna in this video but why i still laughing so hard?
*sorry for my bad english
The main riff of Unforgiven 3 is most likely inspired by Him's song Bleed Well. Metallica toured with Him in 2007.
14:29 Andriy dancing to Hard Bass
I love the Unforgiven III 😭
2>1>3
For me The Unforgiven 2 is the best song Metallica have ever recorded.
10:48 I almost choked on my coffee
1 and 2 have a cowboy/ wild west vibe to the instrumentals, 3 has a more pirate/maritime feel.
In spite of how people feel about Bob Rock, he sure did help pull a powerhouse of a guitar solo out of Kirk for the original Unforgiven.
One of my top favorite guitar solos by him :)
I would put more emphasys on the solo of UN3, is the most underated Kirk's solo
Unforgiven iii is my favorite
Interesting as always, frriend. Even though I think the original Unforgiven is like better, my favorite would be part III. Every riff is so special, as you talked about the verse riff. Same feeling for the solo, I think the 1 is better but there is just something about the 3rd one. I love Unf 2 as well, but is a little below for me. Also, never noticed the hammer ons on U III verse riff, now I got to play it that way ALWAYS!
1 reflects on a growing child failing to live up to potential that outlookers had set out for him, so he blames them
2 reflects on a relationship (not necessarily husband/wife, but some form of emotional/loving relationship) that seems to be crumbling, so he blames her* (or the other him)
3 is an inner reflection on his own actions resulting in him living his life alone, left with only thoughts of blaming himself
The weird 'bend'that you replaced with a slide is probably performed on a 'B-Bender' telecaster. You pull the guitar down to activate a bend! Fascinating device! You can get G Benders too. 🤘🏼 love the channel. 🤘🏼
Unforgiven 3 is my favorite.
