Alex- seriously, how out of touch are you to think that "normal people" make enough money to live on working a 40 hr a week job? There are waaaaaaaay more people who have to work two or three jobs, or whose supposed regular job requires a lot more than 40 hours a week. Huge percentages of people are not only working more than one job, but then also paying close to half (or more) of their income for basic rent or house payment. I wish that were not the case, but it is. This is reality in this day and age.

@@alexanderpbyron I absolutely agree with that point. I just had a visceral reaction because I know soooo many people who wish they could work 40 hours and live. It has been deeply disgusting to me how many people have to work longer and longer hours and still are treading water because the price of the basic living expenses have risen so exponentially (housing, education, and health insurance/care). It seems to be far from normal these days. It has been moving in that direction for decades. And there are still plenty of people who are completely unaware. I have a similar reaction when people say stuff like they think people going bankrupt because of medical expenses is a rare thing. Glad to know I misread you. It was the normal person part of the statement that I reacted to. People having one 40 hour job that sustains them seems more abnormal than normal. And it pisses me off.
I ran into a friend whose daughter recently started working as a researcher on the Warren campaign. She was getting a fair salary and health insurance. Way to practice what you preach and be the change we want to see, progressive democrats!

The "normality" of one job, with a decent standard of living barely exists anymore, be it in the US or here in the UK. I think both Brexit and Trump reflect this anger from many of the working class who feel globalisation has left them behind as we decend into a race to the bottom in wages, provision of work-place benefits or a social safety net. There needs to be a fundamental shift in the way the economy functions for the vast majority of us, as opposed to this archaic trickle-down notion that we unfortunately still live by today.

Realistically speaking, there should be a hard-set requirement for those wishing to be in Congress; you should be legally required to have like 5 years of real-world job experience. If you have no idea how the average person gets by or what they need to deal with in life, how in the hell could you possibly be qualified to speak on their behalf.

The only way your analogy could work is if somehow the owner were someone who knew absolutely nothing about running a hotel but were making the decisions and giving the orders all the same. That would obviously be a disaster waiting to happen.

A hotel owner needs to be able to fully understand and handle most aspects of the hotel system to assign tasks to the staff properly. Sure a owner does not need to handle low priority task like gardening flowers but rather keeping the customers company and making sure that the customers are satisfied with the quality of the service and accommodations they are providing. The better analogy in this, in my opinion, should be none other than what kind of wrongful intentions that the government should have prevented and enforced against, which it didn't, take Betsy DeVos for example, she didn't have the answers to questions regarding the basis of a teacher's foundation and perspective, with regards to erm, completely overestimated numbers compared to the actual one. I hope this is appropriate for what you are trying to explain.

That may be because everytime there is an increase in minimum wage, there are huge layoffs, forcing people to compete, or because the employer demands that, since they're getting paid more, they are more productive.

Your skillset determines your pay, and how mucb that skillset is needed. Plumbing, welding, soldering are all skills that you can acquire without formal education and get a very good paying job with them.

After watching AOC get interviewed by Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers, it's interesting how both men seem to have a difficult time finding their words when speaking to her. She sure doesn't have a hard time communicating though, even on the congress floor speaking in front of everyone and the media. That's a strong woman indeed. Prayers that the leaders of our nation in coming years may be of the same spirit that this powerful woman expresses.

Well, it made sense to be a republican, or a democrat, before both parties became facades for corporate interests, void of any ideological meaning. The only difference nowadays is which kind of corporations each party represents. Neither represents the people anymore, IMO. Given that lack of a meaningful alternative, and the global context, I'd still vote tehnology or media companies into power, rather than big oil or coal or gun makers. Both pose a threat, but the threat from coal and oil and weapons is more urgent to be dealt with, IMO.
