For me personally, folders and other small blades are for offense and surprise when you see bad things coming. But you need a big fixed blade for defense. Trained with some Kali and Silat folks and they masters of concealment . A blade is meant to be felt not seen in their approach. Nasty stuff. This is a great series, I really like it and am learning alot

I was taught that you always work your way to the most effective weapon you have. If you have both knife and gun and have to fight to get to pistol then that is what you can do. I was also taught some ways to give some wounds with a knife that will at least bring the bad guy to a halt but the whole point is to get the pistol. If there is a rifle there then work your way to the rifle. Always go for the most effective tool you can get your hands on. Oh, a fair fight is the one that I walk away from.

One thing that you overlooked on folding knives, they now make assisted open. This type can be opened fully by pressing a nub on the back side of the knife. Makes for faster, one handed opening. Great feature when your other hand is occupied.

Just want to add something at the 4:45 mark.
You're absolutely right about folding knives being difficult to draw in a close quarters strike fist/grappling fest.
However there are two really easy answers for this that i employ and do actually work.
1.) Old school brass butted pocket knives like the Buck Ranger and classic 110 hunter. While you may not be able to open them one handed in fast to expose the blade you can still bash the solid brass into the guys fast and use that to create distance to free a second hand to open it or draw your firearm.
2.) Spring assisted knives AKA 90% of todays folders. THE FUTURE IS NOW OLDMAN.
P.S Great vid tho man. Glad i can see a guy have a no bullshit approach to knives in self defense

I was ill prepared. The struggle was brutal and very exhausting. Had i not been involved in a variety of martial arts primarily bjj that allowed me to SURVIVE (not win) the situation. I would probably be dead. The circumstance has made me aware of the importance of concealed carry and self defense but everywhere i looked its a expensive gun toting badass home commando that have no idea what its like having someone else sink thier teeth into your arms while simultaneously trying to get back up. A thing to remember is that there is no rules in a life or death struggle. That's what I tell all of my female friends - if you are ever are caught in hand-to-hand combat, go for the cheap shots. Pull hair or go below the belt. It doesn't matter. Who cares even if you are a big tough dude. If your life is on the line, go for it if it will give you the advantage. You could be a judo master, but a newb that gets hold of your balls will end you real quick.

Lol.. I've studied martial arts for over 35 years so I'm just saying do a little more research before making assumptions and for the record you vs Doug M. @@theclan4adventures Unless Doug is having a bad day, or is momentarily distracted. There is no such thing as a fight that follows rules OR techniques. Once the battle begins, it becomes a battle of opportunity. Great fighters throughout history have gone down to no-name, less than proficient fighters who saw a flash of opportunity and took it. And if a gun is involved in a knife fight, it's all over. You can take numerous stabs or cuts by a knife. Try shaking off a bullet wound from a .357 magnum. Either way, don't be such a snob. Tell me, when was the last knife fight you saw Doug Marcaida participate in (a real fight, not a choreographed demonstration?) Right. Also, take your own advice, and do a little research. In my 56 years on this planet, I have seen more than a few martial arts "experts" get knocked the fuck out by bigger, faster opponents able to take a few shots before hitting their opponents ONCE, and knocking them out. You can catch that on video these days.

      Irony.
*and the internet is full of them*
      So is the real world.
*but given the 2nd grade "my daddy can beat up your daddy" school stuff you just said towards me*
      Such as?
*I feel i should explain a few things to you*
      This should be good.
      * ..one at 56 you should know a few things..*
      I do, indeed.
*didnt your mom ever teach you that if you dont have something nice to say say nothing at all..*
Apparently, your mother did not, as evidenced by your first post, to which I responded to in the same manner.
You are not very good at this, are you?
*and at the very least I'm pretty sure your dad should have taught you that if you go looking for a fight you'll find one*
Indeed. Is that what this is? Appears more to me like whining.
*and it wont go the way you think it should.*
Which was my point in my rebuttal, which appears to have completely gone over your head.
*What i said was very specific in relation to the fact the the guy in the video contradicts hims self multiple times.*
      And?
      *that's it pal.*
      Not your pal.
*Now if you want to debate professional sports fighting and martial arts or weapons such as knifes and guns I'll be more than happy to give you or anyone else my opinion on such things.*
Not interested in your opinion. You know the old saying about opinions.
*Taking for instance the gun vs knife situation well it comes down to two major factors..the two combatants and then all of the parameters involved.*
      It comes down to opportunity.
*I know of a few personal incidents where an armed man with a knife (not a trained fighter) was fired upon taking multiple hits from a 9mm and still closed the gap stabbing the officer in the face and neck almost killing him so I think you sir would be the one surprised given you seem to have the assumption the the bigger badder guy wins..*
The bigger badder guy generally always wins, and I never used a 9mm as an example.
However, on the flip side of that example, there are VASTLY more incidences in which the guy with the knife dies from a gunshot wound. You see this every day on the street as a patrol officer.
Oh...did I forget to mention something?
*or in this case who has what seems to be the superior weapon should win.*
The incidences in which the person with the superior weapon winning is prolific. As are the incidences in which the perp with the sub-par weapon (knife vs, gun) quickly comes to his senses and drops the weapon.
*In any give scenario there are way to many variables for anyone to assume they would know the out come every time.*
      "Outcome." One word.
And, again, the number of idiots who take a knife to a gunfight is incredibly low, as are the number of people who win such a showdown.
      Are you seriously claiming otherwise?
      Really?
*As far as "martial artists " the internet is filled with so called masters of this or that..*
Or those claiming to have studied for 35 years as if such a claim, true or not, suddenly makes them an expert in knife fighting.
*here my friend is the part about this subject everyone misses and no one ever talks about.. ever.*
Hit me with your martial arts wisdom, Bruce.
*A real martial artist doesnt go looking for fights..*
      Irrelevant.
Whether you are a martial artist or a plumber, guns and knives in the hands of criminal elements, the mentally ill or those whacked out on drugs can, and often do, find you.
Especially here in the US, and even more so should you live in the larger cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, etc.
*and is not easily convinced to get into one either.*
When someone threatens your life, you become easily convinced.
On the other hand, if you do not use what you know, then martial artists have no business offering their opinion on fighting having never used their skills in a fight.
And, as I stated previously, I have see far too many people attempt to use this style of fighting in a street fight or bar fight, only to scissor kick Bubba, who then laughs at him before knocking him out with a simple straight right to the jaw.
I have seen few (very few) martial artists successfully transfer what they learned in the dojo to the extreme messiness that is a street fight.
      It's as simple as that.
*People confuse professionals who studied a style or some form of martial art to better their fighting career..as a real martial artist and I'm sorry to say but they are not.*
You do not consider "professionals" as "real martial artists?"
      Interesting.
This sort of reminds me of Christians claiming other Christians are not "real Christians" because they do not believe the same thing.
      Too funny.
*Does that mean any of these people should be taken lightly ...absolutely not.*
Oh look, we agree on one thing.
Actually, NO ONE should be "taken lightly" in a fight, whether that be with hands and feet, a knife or a gun.
I have bet on the wrong fighter in a bar fight one too many times, myself.
Again, opportunity is king in a fight, whether that be between individuals, a group, or an army.
*You would either have to be a real bad ass or a complete moron to challenge any of them regardless of what type of fighting your talking about*
      I just said that.
*I dont care who you are a trained fighter in anything will easily defeat someone who has trained in nothing..*
      Again, just said that.
*my girlfriend in high school weighed 110 lbs but trained beat the crap out of a guy who was 225 all muscle after he smacked her ass in the hallway thinking he was cool.*
You keep making my points for me.
      You are a superb debater.
*So understand that the old saying "it's not the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog" has truth to it in some cases.*
In the vast majority of cases, actually.
*anyway it's late and I've waisted*
      "Wasted."
*enough time trying to teach old dogs new tricks*
Good luck with that in the future.

I like fixed blades with a retention band. It’s lethal the second you take it out and you can grapple and control limbs without dropping your weapon. And if you make it out of elastic you can still reverse grip it. You can even twist it so the grip reverses in a split second when you open your hand.

You said it before I got a chance to.
Knives are meant for CUTTING. Spikes are meant for STABBING.
Only need a 1.5" blade for rather consistent lethality. Not 9". And, nearly everyone with medical response experience will agree that a blade wound is WAY worse than a bullet wound!
If you go for my gun, I'll LET YOU. Because while my one hand is barely putting in any effort at all to stop you from drawing it from my holster, my other hand is using nearly the same lack of effort to easily fillet the rest of your body.
For that matter, grabbing the arm reaching for your gun helps make sure that the adversary stays within blade reach.
You can miss with a bullet while hugging. I'm not missing with the edge of my blade.
I've been using a statement for years, when asked about carrying a gun and a blade: "My gun is to defend you. My blade is to defend ME."

A very smart man told me that if you choose to engage someone with a knife, even if you also have a knife, you have to acknowledge the fact that you’re going to get cut. It’s your job to make sure you get cut in the right places so that you can walk away and your opponent can’t. For reference, I’m a martial artist of ten years who has studied knife fighting for several months. The man who told me this is a martial artist of probably thirty or forty years and has been working with knives and bladed weapons for most of that time. He’s worked private security for the United Nations and taught fighting courses for security guards at universities.

Living in rural North Idaho, I honestly did not know that some areas do not allow fixed blade knives. It's just so normal for me to have a 4" blade hunting knife on me for everyday utility that I don't even think about it.

Could you comment on underhand vs overhand knife grip? What would be the response to the idea that the underhand grip delivered to the abdomen is easier to conceal before the strike and more difficult to defend against?

  • @bigd7861
    @bigd7861 5 лет назад +2

Knives are meant for CUTTING. Spikes are meant for STABBING.
You only need a 1.5" blade for rather consistent lethality. Not 9". And, nearly everyone with medical response experience, rather it's an EMT or a full on surgeon, agrees that a blade wound is WAY worse than a bullet wound! Stab wounds, not so bad.
If you go for my gun, I'll LET YOU. Because while my one hand is barely putting in any effort, at all, to stop you from drawing it from my holster, my other hand is using a small blade with nearly the same lack of effort to easily fillet the rest of your body.
For that matter, grabbing the arm reaching for your gun helps make sure that the adversary stays within blade reach.
The one agreed upon point, is having the blade easily accessible to your off hand.
You can miss with a bullet while hugging. I'm not missing with the edge of my blade.
I've been using a statement for years, when asked about carrying a gun and a blade: "My gun is to defend you. My blade is to defend ME."

Escrima. Old school. Before belts, forms, set qualifications.
You hold the knife the worst way, have the blade out thumb/forefinger. You can stab with point and slice left AND right. Stab toward the body and when they react slice their wrist. Before the knife you had several faster options. Left elbow to the throat or head. Take left hand to also hold gun via his hand and rotate your body by starting to step behind you with your left foot, but then set and rotate your torso and arm tight to your body quickly.
Their elbow will break. The strongest guy still takes about 15# of pressure to destroy.
Conversely if their leg is in close, step your instep behind his heel and lean against his shin/squat into it if you can. Shattered knee at about 26# pressure.

You made some great points and I really appreciated how you explained your thought process and lessons from training that informed your opinions. It would be really interesting to get to see some video of those training scenarios.
The only thing that didn't make total sense to me was the timing on dropping / throwing your knife.
What happens if you after you drop the knife / draw the gun, the gun goes click-click-click instead of bang-bang-bang? Now you're still potentially just inches from contact range with someone that you've just thrown a knife to and a gun that needs some extra attention before it's more than a blunt object. Is a 2-handed grip on the gun (especially so close in) really worth dropping the knife for?

Best concealed carry weapon for close quarters is a bass because if you're going to attack someone or are currently attacking someone the second they pull a fish out of their pants and start hitting you with it you're reaction isn't going to be "I'm going to keep attacking this person" it's going to be "where the fuck did that fish come from?!" And then they have just enough time to run away

There are literally edged weapon specialists in special force teams. So I’d say there are professionals. And a good way to win is to go for the arteries. You can stab and cut someone hundreds of times without them dying. You need to remove their life blood. So there is a technique too.

I get the offhand carry idea, but why not carry hilt forward? That would remove a step in weapon manipulation under duress, and let you move into the defensive/stabby/GTFO motion that much quicker...

You can conceal a glock field knife the same way you can conceal a IWB gun holster. I like to use velcro to hold the sheaths on clothing though. Legalities are the main problem so legal tools might be the way to go.

Pretty good video however you can kill someone with less than a 9 inch blade. A 4 inch blade is plenty, target the carotid arteries , subclavian artery , Brachial artery all are susceptible to smaller blade attacks. (Femoral artery can be attacked too.) A historic note, swords were used in The Moro Rebellion in (1899 to 1913) also the second Sino Japanese war (1937 to 1945) saw swords used on a larger scale.
