The song that dragged me under the grasp of Sleep Token. This is the first song of theirs that I fully memorized, and the one that made me go "if he doesn't talk about me like this, then I don't want him". To be someone's muse the way Sleep is Vessel's is on my bucket list of things to do before I die, along with seeing them play live.
Sussan, I loved the way you described Vessel falling back into the hole as "beautiful"... The way he chronicles his descent into madness time and time again is truly nothing short of tasteful, and I'm so glad you expressed it the way you did! And I loved the little Animal Crossing edit, that caught me off guard 😆 Also, question: what was that word you used: "chinny?" I'm not familiar with it... is it Australian slang?🤔And YES SUSSI, THE GIVE CROWD DOES LOVE ALKALINE 😠😂 Calling this song "cool" is probably the best way to describe it.
Dave, I'm so glad somebody else mentioned the "crumbling mansion" being a metaphor for his debilitating relationship with Sleep! Couldn't have said it better myself about the hazmats being a representation of people trying to help him. Also, spot on with the mask analysis! The first mask (One, Two, and Sundowning) is the Rod of Asclepius: the symbol of medicine and healing (and possibly alchemy). The bottom if the staff on the mask had an opening for his mouth, which shows that he still had a little bit of himself beneath Sleep. The second mask, Tomb, is him being completely "buried" beneath Sleep; no mouth piece, the Sleep Token sigil, and 6 eyes (my theory for that is that it represents her as a spider and he's the "winged insect" tangled in her web 👀👀👀). Third and current mask, Eden, is him regaining his voice back by literally consuming Sleep. The addition to the pauldron could be a sign of him "upgrading" his character like in a video game (every song in Eden has a character he has to face, so that's what makes the mot sense to me). I could talk about their symbols and lore for ages, so I'll just move on to this song and lyrics!
First off, let's look at the track number: 7. She's not Acid nor Alkaline: she's Neutral.... 7 on the pH scale. You wanna know what other song was on track 7 in Sundowning? "Give"! Considering this is his reminiscence album to Sundowning, I think it's safe to assume that the two songs coincide with one another (either that or this is all just one big happy coincidence). Also, remember that one line in "Give" where he goes, "I will be watching for your enemies, to let them know that they contend with me"...? Yeah, that's another reason why I believe this track is Tomb's Give; everything blends too perfectly. The mv itself is my favorite because, as Sussi said, it's so cool! Feels so dark and eldritch-y~
Lyric Dissection Time!:

There is something beneath - (Yeahhh... every once in a while, Vessel is back on his bullshit. He's letting Sleep mess with the very fabric of his being, altering even the telomeres of his DNA.)

I'm caught up in her design
And how it connects to mine
I see in a different light
The objects of my desire - (The most poetic way I've ever seen someone confess their obsession about another. Not left or right, not black or white, not day or night... and he's caught tangled in her divine web that isn't of this plane of existence. He yearns for things beyond our comprehension, and Sleep is the only one able to give it to him.)
Ooh, let's talk about chemistry

'Til the particles part like holy water
If anything, she's an undiscovered element
Either born in hell or heaven-sent
But either way I'm into it - (Vessel the alchemist, as if his symbols in Sundowning weren't enough proof of his attempts to summon Sleep into his life again. He wants to talk our ears off about how badly he needs to fuse himself into her own divine structure, the way sugar dissolves in water. She's beyond what's known on the periodic table of elements, something much more celestial and empyrean.)

Very straightforward song when it comes down to it... so simple yet so weighty. His devotion to Sleep is absolute, no matter what anyone on the outside has to input about their very complicated relationship.
Ranking: this is definitely top 5 for me, gonna have to say 3 for now 😄
lol "Chinny" is just a pet name with a long history. We get quite comfortable that we forget we are recording sometimes lol

I am typing this first paragraph 2 seconds into starting this video as I'd like to get rating out the way..... 1 NUMBER 1. Been waiting for this track for so long! I'm such an idiot, as I grabbed my rating list, I realised I wrote "The love that you want" on 1.... moving it down to 2 and Alkaline to 1. I've listened to this song so much, it was my number 1 song on spotify last year. I also looked into the lyrics so much that I could put you to... sleep (aye, see what I did there) purly from writing a whole book about my analysis on this.
Ok, now that I've watched the whole video lol, here's what I have to say. I haven't taken the time to analyse the music video but the lyrics... I have. I absolutley love the metaphors used espesally using the ph scale to describe Eden/Jessie. Saying that Eden/Jessie isn't this or that, for me it's Vessle telling us that whoever he's singing about isn't like anyone he's met before, they're not acidic (toxic) nor are they alkaline (aka basic) It's just a beautiful summary of how he feels about this person blindly.
Both of you are smarter than me. Not ranking anything at number 1 until it's time... unlike me i'm driving straight in. Unless there's a song on this album I have yet to listen to that'll top alkaline... I'm certin it's staying in place.... Everything else needs to be shifted down at this point... I'm running out of space for Eden album.

One thing I don't quite get on the use of the not acid nor alkaline part, is it coz Vess means she's in between, as in neutral, grey, boring, but he loves her regardless? Or does he mean that she's too special to be measured by human terms, that's why he loves her? Or is it coz she doesn't give a sht about him, she's like meh whatever all the time? So i'm torn between seeing her as either boring or special, or a coldhearted heartbreaker. LOL. But somehow, my romantic heart feels like the boring interpretation is even more romantic. Like how in romance books, the girl is always this dorky nerdy introvert who somehow attracts the hottest richkid buff boy on earth?
So yea this is basically Vess being obsessed with her again. Like in Mine.
"Sleep is protecting him and he's using Sleep to protect him" -- disregarding the fact that Sleep is a god, i could actually relate to this in the sense that i often use sleep (the act of), to protect me: when i'm lonely, or when I don't feel like facing anything in general.
What I don't like about this song is the vocals, it sounds too forced-low if u know what i mean? It doesn't sound like natural Vess vocals. It doesn't have the Vess growls either..And because of that, i rank this #32, pushing up drag me under, like that, and sugar to #29-31. Songs under this are the love you want, dark signs and give 😂
Oh and it's the last song before the best parts of Tomb, imo. Sooo yeah, it's one of the songs i "have to go through" 😂
P.S. i just got to the end of the vid where dave thinks we're going into the not better half? Scuze meee? Lol jk. 😂
So I always saw the "Not Acid nor Alkaline" as a way to describe something that's indescribable. Something that is out of the norm and something so interesting and intriguing because of it?
Its an unclassifiable thing. An undefinable!

I always took it as her being so special she can't be measured in terms that we do a mere humans.
This is Vessel definitely in his obsession era. You're right, it's on Mine level of obsession. It's all consuming to him and I think he justifies this obsession by saying she's so perfect and special and that makes it okay.
