"Why is he leaving?" Cause he's a rock star and has to come sing for all of us 😊. He wrote this for his wife cause they missed each other when he was on tour.
This. I've seen him in concert a couple times and his marriage is a true romance. He wrote it for her. And he brought her out on stage. She was on tour with him.
When my wife and I got married, I had their song "Lady" played at the reception as our first dance as husband and wife. Years later, this song was playing as she drove me to the airport to leave for Air Force Basic Training. I lost her last month after 50 years together. Cant hear either song now without breaking down. Thanks for playing and reviewing "our" song.
All I can say is Styx's put out a lot of great jams this is one of my favorite songs from this group the other song is too much time on my hands or Come Sail Away❤
This song was their biggest hit back in 1979! It went triple platinum! This song was played so much! It was all over the radio stations! They’re originally from Chicago.
Styx had always been on the concept performance side in their shows. One of their biggest hits is Come Sail Away, with a video that is concert footage they might be in costume so to speak with their other songs on the set list
Written and arranged by Styx pianist Dennis DeYoung, he wrote this for his wife, whom he's been married to for fifty years. From their 1979 album Cornerstone. Great tracks on it, and Babe was their biggest hit in the late seventies.
That man you called beautiful is Tommy Shaw, his voice is phenomenal too! He was also in the super group "Damn Yankees" who do a great PDC song/video called "Come Again".
Styx is one of those groups with a lot of lore, a lot of it being Dennis vs. the rest of the group. Dennis wanted a theatrical approach to the songs and band performance, but the rest of the group felt that they were a rock band and the performance should reflect that. Everything came to a head during the 1983 "Kilroy Was Here" tour. For the first ten dates, Dennis had the group perform a play of sorts, which delayed the songs for an hour. This went over poorly with the audience. Finally, the record company stepped in and said "Just play the damn songs and cut out this acting stuff!!" At some point, the play was done on video (and it's out there). The band took six years off after the tour (there was some solo projects going on) before resuming recording and touring without Dennis. The band reunited in 1996 for a performance to honor drummer John Pannozo, who died of liver disease. Styx continued to perform without Dennis and tried to avoid playing his songs (he wrote at least 50% of their hits). About five or six years ago, the band bowed to public pressure and inserted Dennis' songs into their performances. I have always loved the music of Styx and coincidentally I sing on the same key as Dennis (I sang lead in a RUSH tribute band in college and later spent 20 years in a large church choir). I've seen videos of the band performing with Dennis and it always looked unbalanced to me (but that's just me).
When this song was playing on the radio back in the day, I was heading to basic training, and leaving my girlfriend behind, as I headed into the big scary world, I can remember standing at the phone booth, listening to this song over the phone, talking about getting married when I got back, etc...well, I got back, we never married, I'm now 65, I've seen Styx live, twice, I've been a Styx fan since the 70's...thanks for reacting to them.
Took my wife to a Styx, REO Speedwagon and Def Leppard concert way a while back. That's a serious lineup, great time. Styx absolutely killed it, such a great time.
Styx had 2 different lead singers. Dennis DeYoung is the lead singer for most of their songs, including this one. Tommy Shaw, the guitarist in the red shirt was the other one.
When my sister was a senior in high school she started dating a guy that was in the Navy and ever time this so came on the radio she cried that guy and my sister got happily married 38 years ago and they are still going strong P S he retired from the navy after 20 years.
The way they are dressed is how a lot of rock musicians dressed at concerts. Just wore what they wanted to wear, not necessarily with a matching style. The lead singer on this song, Dennis DeYoung, is not front and center because he is not the only lead singer in the band. The two guitarists, James Young and Tony Shaw also wrote songs and sang lead. As is fairly common for bands with multiple writers and singers, the one who wrote the song usually sings lead. The two guitarists were also both lead guitarists so they would usually alternate playing lead on the songs.
Styx is a great band that i never got to see in concert. You would greatly enjoy Come Sail Away. I'm glad that somebody mentioned the Grand Illusion here because I had forgotten about that song and that album I'm going to give it another listen later today
I saw Styx perform live at the Budokan in Tokyo in 1982. My dear mother, God rest her soul, came to Japan to visit me (and meet her new granddaughter) a year earlier. While she was there she bought the album, Cornerstone, for me, which contained this song, Babe.
I saw styx in their "Grand Illusion Tour" in 1977, also "Grand Illusion" awesome song. I am not sure, but the sailor is looking outfitb may be with reapect to their 'Come Sail Away' song (hey I'm 61 and it lwas 1977 concert.) 6:30 . Babe was a mega hit too.. it is his song to his girl before goong on tour, i believe.
Britt - When I was in college in the early 90s, I arranged this song for my 6-part mens a capella group. A recording of it is somewhere in the dusty cassette stockpile, and it was pretty awesome if I do say so myself :)
70s vibe! lotsa keyboards back then. Saw you watching that guitar player a bit after he went back to his place on stage. Lots of people rocked these quasi-monk outfits back then. The story of this song - "Babe, I'm doing a 20 city tour, and I'll miss you - really! wink wink"
Legend is, this was the demo take with the bass player and drummer. They could not replicate it in studio with Shaw and Young in the studio, so this was the take that's on the album.
Dennis DeYoung is the singer, keyboardist of this song. Tommy Shaw is the blonde guitarist that you said was beautiful. He does his own songs that he sings. Renegade is one of them. They are so diverse
I saw Styx in 1983 in Jacksonville Florida. You won't regret doing more reaction to their catalog of music. Dennis had a solo career, and Desert Moon was a good one.
First song I ever waited to come on the radio. I loved it. I was about 9-10 and a rambunctious crazy kid ready to become a stuntman and this one made me say "hmmm, what's this love stuff all about?"
I was 15, it was Christmas vacation and my family moved to a new state. I was leaving everything including my 1st love, this song just came out and I cried, and cried. I still can get a bit emotional.
I was in Junior high when this song came out. When you went to the school dance THIS was the song you wanted to dance to with that special girl. But is was high stakes. You had to have the courage to ask and then pray she said yes. LOL.. Good times.
I went to the Styx concert with the lead singers (Dennis DeYoung) wife's sister when this song first came out. I was sitting with his her and Dennis DeYoung's Wife and he came into the audience and sang part of this song to her in the audience. It was surreal. This was in San Diego. I was about 18 years old. What a night. Went backstage and Tommy was with Linda Blair from the movie the Exorcist. What a memory.
As someone pointed out the lyrics are about missing his beloved when he's on tour. I believe i shared this with you already, but singer Dennis De Young and his wife Suzanne are one of the moat enduring love stories in show business. They married around 1970 as high school sweethearts and are still together. Atyx had two hits that were love songs DeYoung wrote for b hia wife. Thw song Lady, which was one of Styx' earliest hits feom circa 1973 and this song from 1979. Initially DeYoung wrote it as a birthday preaent for Suzanne, but the record.execs rightfully saw it as a hit and urged its inclusion on the album they were recording at the time. They were right. The song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
4:01 i’m sorry for all the comments but styx has touched my heart since i was 8 or 9. i’m 52 now). and “sailor man” is one of THEE hottest and sweetest people i’ve ever met. i wish i could show you my pic with him and my son. now that you’ve opened the styx vault you can’t stop.
I don't know if you've heard any other Styx songs, but you really should hear the other side of Styx that isn't ballads. I recommend Renegade and Mr. Roboto. They were a great band.
Jeff Lynne and ELO are retiring from touring, can you please do a song for that. Maybe Turn to stone or Rockaria, live from Wembly stadium, you won’t be disappointed. Love your channel, enjoy your commentary. 😀
the man you are describing as beautiful is Tommy Shaw, a short king btw. He also is a lead singer with a 4 octave range. Check out the song Crystal Ball by Styx
You want some fun - watch their live performance with the Cleveland youth orchestra at blossom music center. A rock and roll goddess added the kids music in with styx and then the guys snuck into town for almost 2 weeks and then they went and performed. BTW don't know if any video exists, but the singer-songwriter-pianist Dennis DeYoung went on to play Pontius Pilot in the 80s Broadway revival of Jesus Christ Superstar.
"Why is he leaving?" Cause he's a rock star and has to come sing for all of us 😊. He wrote this for his wife cause they missed each other when he was on tour.

There's a lot of really good songs about life on the road
@@dvsreedYea another one that comes to mind is “Faithfully” by Journey

The man singing lead playing the piano, Dennis DeYoung wrote “Babe” as well as a LOT of other most popular Styx songs.
“Lady” is a beautiful song by styx
Love Styx they are so diverse ,and this song is beautiful. ❤
All I can say is Styx's put out a lot of great jams this is one of my favorite songs from this group the other song is too much time on my hands or Come Sail Away❤
Dennis D’young lead singer
Tommy Shaw on lead guitar
Tommy Shaw on guitar ladies & gentlemen, plus a fantastic voice!
This song was their biggest hit back in 1979! It went triple platinum! This song was played so much! It was all over the radio stations! They’re originally from Chicago.
I was 13 years old when this song came out, whenever I hear it, I go straight back to those days.
Lol. No shit.. Exact same for me. Same age as well.
I was 15, and my parents moved to another state, and I had to say goodbye to my 1st love

Absolute must to check out!!! " LADY" Live with the long piano intro.

Tommy Shaw is aging well

This song is real. Dennis is still married to Susanne, the woman he wrote this for. Some 53 years later.
Wow...💖💖
This song was a staple for roller rinks and middle school dances in the 80s. Brings back memories!
Thissongs from the 70s

26 years in the U.S. Navy and my wife and I used to play this song on a set time and day of the week while I was on deployment!
Styx had 2 different lead singers. Dennis DeYoung is the lead singer for most of their songs, including this one. Tommy Shaw, the guitarist in the red shirt was the other one.
One of Styx's BEST pieces of art.

One of my favorites when i was a teen
When I was in high school we'd play this on the jukebox. We'd listen to it over and over when we had broken hearts.
THIS WAZ THE 1970s 4 sure i waz there
Styx is such a great band. Enjoy 😅their music!
RIP john panozzo. chuckie is still carrying on your legacy 🥰
Couple of songs the "beautiful guy," Tommy Shaw wrote and sang for Styx are Crystal Ball and Renegade.
Renegade was my favorite song of that era, of course I was a bit of a screw-up and it definitely hit home with me!
Don’t forget Tommy Shaw/ Damn Yankees
My older sister had all of their music on vinyl ❤. They played this song at every dance and the roller rink. Beautiful music and memories.
Dennis De Young, what a voice ❤👍
Omgosh.... STYX was so big. This song is killer sentimental. ❤
Lorelei by Styx is my recommendation. It is much advanced for a 1975 recording.
couples song at the skating rink
Oh definitely a couple skate...

Come Sail Away another Styx classic
the song was couple skate at the roller skating ring
This is the song I had my first slow dance to, way back when I was a youngin'
Late 70's homecoming dances and proms, in high schools across America, were not complete until this song was played. The glory days of slow dancing.
Styx was huge in most of the 70s
@theodoreritola7641 True. But this song was released in '79... so my comment remains true. I should have also included "early '80s"
Suite madam blue is my fav Styx
Great concerts back in the day!!! Great slow dance on a Friday night at the dance club. Good memories!
Tommy the one you called beautiful also sings lead on some of the songs
Still cannot believe these are the same people who sang Mr. Roboto. Like, the total differences between the two.
One of my favorite somgs from that time. Alwyas love your reactions!

EVERY SINGLE couple skate at my local skating rink from 79 through the 80s.
The 70s had so many huge bands formed more than any decade EVER, Styx is one of them
Who remembers the song coming on and automatically knowing it was a couples skate at the local Roll Arena ?
Oh, I so hope you dive more into styx
They have so many good ballads!
I think you might like Supertramp. The Long Way Home is one of their best IMO.
Dennis Deyoung solo album was called Desert Moon,, check out the title song
Tommy Shaw is Very Beautiful!! He is super Hot, super Talented and I Love his Voice!! He's my favorite! 🥰
I say it often, if I had 1 wish, it would be to go back to the 80's. Just miss it too much.

"Is he a sailor?". Well this song is very Yacht Rockesque, so yes, yes he is.
He has the Freddie Mercury vibe
