I am always learning something, more or less, from Gavin. But I always turn out to be in a happier mode when ending, than when starting. Such a positive attitude. Thanks, Gavin!
I liked this video. Good results. Being picky, light travels in a straight line, if a mirror, lens, water is not in the way. It can’t wrap. I’ve tried very hard to desensitize myself, but continue to fail. But I’m sure not going to stop watching your videos.
i love my strip boxes with grids with my dancers,,,but now I get to play more with your ideas...where do I place my lights??Everywhere...great to watch your videos...and then practice with the models!!! Thanks again Gavin! Your fan in NYC!
It's got me buggered why people click thumbs down on this sort of content. What did you expect? That he'd tell you your portraits would suddenly look professional if you placed your softbox 3.7 feet from the subject and 27.93 inches forward of center? He have you the correct answer; experiment.
Another great video. One side not is that the further to the side the light is the more pronounced skin imperfections will usually be. That means more retouching work but it is a great effect.
I’ve left all my soft box set up ready for when I get home tonight so this video came at good time and given me some good poses for my self portrait project I’m doing. Thanks Gav! I’ll tag you in the final results on my Instagram!
I have two square soft boxes, if I place them side by side to form a rectangle, will I get a similar effect? No need to answer, I will try it myself. Also thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and positive attitude.
Really a very informative video offered a lot of help Gavin! My other question is I noticed you had some room light going on when you took the photographs did you have any type of ceiling light or any other type of light going on?ambient light, thank you
Hi Gavin, your tutorials are great! I would have mentioned that side walls with black curtains are needed to achieve the results you presented. I hope my comment complements your excellent video
Thank you for the tuts. You have helped a lot in my photography journey And much appreciation to people who have made it possible for you to do your work 🙏
.. brother Gavin your intros always give me life hehehe 😀😄😀😄😀😄😂 and your reviews are simple and effective! Your work is appreciated all the way from the Kingdom of eSwatini
"I got the amazing Bryan!" Bryan wave unamusely. I chuckled. You are so funny, with your pretty accent and your pretty spirit, makes me want to conquer the world. Thanks so much i love you Gavin!
Well if you put the light higher you have less light on his neck, if you use a round source like an octagon, you have more natural shadows and of course a more attractive round catchlight in the eyes.
Absolutely right Neil. If, if , if... and that's the beauty of photography. There's no absolute rights, no absolute wrongs just endless ways to take photos and have fun :)
since a few months I have been infected with the photography virus :-) After browsing the internet for tips and ideas, I came across your RUclips channel last week Your explanation is great and above all easy to understand The only problem I have now is that I have little time to go to work ,, I just keep watching your videos :-) geezz am i addicted now ? haha but have a question, Gavin,, and saw it a few times in your studio ,, you just see the recording of the video clearly with good light, and when you show your test photo's are wonderfull dark in the background ,, so the question is ,, do you tunr the light off in the studio ? when you take the photo or how should I see it? it seems to me the light in the studio must have some impact on the photo ?

Great examples and work as always. Can you please tell me where you got that backdrop at the end from.??
Hi James. My studio background came from the local hardware store. Details of the build are here www.gavtrain.com/?p=3824
Love it... ❤
Well if you put the light higher you have less light on his neck, if you use a round source like an octagon, you have more natural shadows and of course a more attractive round catchlight in the eyes.

thanks for this ~
since a few months I have been infected with the photography virus :-)
After browsing the internet for tips and ideas, I came across your RUclips channel last week
Your explanation is great and above all easy to understand
The only problem I have now is that I have little time to go to work ,, I just keep watching your videos :-)
geezz am i addicted now ? haha
but have a question, Gavin,,
and saw it a few times in your studio ,,
you just see the recording of the video clearly with good light,
and when you show your test photo's are wonderfull dark in the background ,,
so the question is ,,
do you tunr the light off in the studio ? when you take the photo or how should I see it?
it seems to me the light in the studio must have some impact on the photo ?
