- What it's really like as a software engineer working from home? Maybe you'll find out in this video, and I was actually oncall that week lol.

As a software dev, this was really accurate to my day-to-day experience! Except for the gym. And the dog. And the friends...
You are missing a lot here Have you thought of adding them :)?
@@drtransport23 Have put it into the backlog, current sprints are full.
Me: And definately the work culture and salary
Woow. You said the exact thing I wanna say. Lol
and the compiling
That zoom call was one of the most accurate skits I have ever witnessed.
Clearly you haven't watch Joma tech's day in the life video, that's pretty hilarious too
@@purplesongs I enjoyed that one a lot too! I go back to it occasionally. I just found this one to be so relatable with the zoom call. Everything was on queue really reminding me that we definitely live in a sim 😂 This man's acting was so on point with no one trying to be neccessarily trying to call attention to themselves in the morning standup.
@@purplesongs jomas wasn’t realistic ….
@@kanpekiken2481 I take it you’re a software engineer?
literally every tech company I have ever worked at organizes it in the exact same way lol
Dude, as a SW Engineer myself, this is my everyday work hahaha, cheers mate!
Edit: Thank's everyone for the appreciation on my comment! :)
lesgooooo! cheers mate!
Same bro
Where do you work?
your laptop stand link plz
Same here! Tech company in Barcelona.
My father, a construction worker, always laughs at how we developers have a destress time in the morning. Or rather, he laughs at how our days seem to start around 9:30 while most blue-collar jobs start at sunrise. That destress period is SO damn important. We needs our minds to be clear to get anything done.
Zoom call was dead on. A lot of youtubers exaggerate or get this wrong. You absolutely nailed it.
Good stuff man! As a senior high school student who will be attending college this fall on a baseball scholarship. Aside from baseball tech is my favorite hobby I will be getting my degree in CIS and becoming a software dev this gives me a great insight on what it’s like!
wich UNI are you going to?
@@reen6904 I have committed to Morton College in Cicero, Illinois near chicago. I got signed up for classes I’ll be getting my gen Ed’s out of the way also taking a computer business class. Then I’ll be transferring to a 4 year!!
@@huntermccaw5901 i did community college then transferred to a 4 year and it was a fantastic decision. Saved me a lot of money compared to all my friends who started out at a 4 year
You got this. It's a hard major, but DEFINITELY worth it. Sending good vibes your way.
@@Hectectica I appreciate that!
The on-call thing made me giggle. I would've never thought that you guys get out on call. I work in healthcare so being on-call is normal. lol Makes sense though.
Yeah, the random three in the morning calls in the morning really gets to you. Sometimes, they don't even tell you that you're going to be on-call, you're just expected to wake up at 3:30 in the morning.
@@airflow0 you guys better get paid well for that. A lot of companies don’t expect that from their software engineer. Or they only put the new hires on those overnight on-call rotations as a way for them to “pay dues”.
@@ThomasFoolery8 I wouldn't put new hires on call. That's like having a brand new mechanic trying to fix a Maserati. We give a minimum of 8 months before you're able to serve for on-call. It all depends on what the problem is. If it's a level 1, then all managers and dev leads are called. If it's a level 4, only the person that's on duty will be called. Only really big tech giants have on-call duties, especially Microsoft. Our On-Call duties last one month per year and I absolutely hate it.
@@airflow0 right I’m guessing you use PagerDuty? I work at a hedge fund. Trading systems being down is very costly. Yet, for most issues we’ll train up some junior dev to go through the motions to fix the problem. They’d only escalate to me if it’s way outside of their scope. For overnight issues, our London office takes care of it. This is the least an international company should do for their devs.
@@ThomasFoolery8 That would probably make more sense to do, but the program we manage is only worked on by our team, so there isn't an option to keep an oversea team. No, we use our own inhouse built system to manage all our in-calls. You know, build it once and not pay licensing fees forever.
Dude I used to live in Seattle for 6 months in 2019 (moved from Europe), your videos from DT Seattle really brought some memories. Keep going :)
Gosh this is golden comedy
It’s interesting I would NEVER be able to do that kind of work.
It’s so interesting to see other peoples jobs. I work in emergency services and I could never be inside working on screens all day.
Thank you for doing what you do, you’re valuable!
I really appreciate folks who take their time to do videos like this. You guys are awesome
dIDNt realize u were all of the character, 10/10 deserves an oscar
As a product manager I did discover that the "three-dot" menu is called Kebab. I felt like that was the most technical thing I learned that day.
“If you’re talking you’re on mute” “hey sorry I was on mute” I use this excuse atleast twice a day
Me too 😂😂
I'm addicted to these types of videos
Hey man, I have a video suggestion, how about talking about what you do, and how you got started in this career
I have just began my career in development, and I watch your videos as inspiration to get further and further with my skills, life and value to the world! Keep it coming
That honest "Sorry I was on mute" is so real-life xD

LOL the pile of cash on the desk was a nice touch!
Realistic day in the life of a software engineer: stopping in the middle of work to watch this nice video (my situation right now).
I’m an emt that works full time in a 911 position and watching you wake up to the alarm is exactly how I feel everytime we get a late call man. Sleeping nice and good and being awoken to sirens and a dispatcher telling you the address as you wake up is hilarious
you’re on fire bro this channel gonna be huge
i dont know why but your videos are so inspiring for me. Thanks for them
I really appreciate that!! :)
omg this is amazing
OMG the empty fridge thing is so true. We order takeout way too often. And in my case, it's not bluebs, but pineapple
Your videos are getting better and better! Acting very on point 😄 Let me know if you ever need a designer feat your video.
probably the most accurate cut of any developer expect office guys, don't forget they do exist
I definitely LOVED the catch up meeting! hahahahhahahahaha
it is EXACTLY like this!! wtffff
i love this guy with my whole heart
Thank you for show me this kind of life, because now I know what I want to do with programming, this is not the life I want.
I feel the pain in the morning just by listening to that alarm in the beginning of the vid
Hahaha I think I drove by your building before! We visit sometimes from Portland :) Love your video, subscribed!
the long haired senior dev is on point.
That debugging session was painfully accurate lmao.
This video was the best in the history of day in life. About I was on mute was so accurate!
just remembered my on-call times after watching this.
cout
i need your alarm mate😂. great video btw👌
Omg, this is exactly how it is lol! Just graduated and this helps me calm down a bit that I'm doing the same haha
just found your channel loved your vid , love the quality man ! sick stuff
If you're getting this much time for your own in Amazon, That's great work life balance man, Hope some day I will achieve this
he was reading AWS documentation, doesn't mean he works for Amazon, but rather probably only uses their cloud service for providing and clustering their server
@@YuriG03042 pretty sure he works for amazon but either way he has a lot of time outside of work which is enjoyable but hard to manage for some
Most of the complaints I see surrounding Amazon are from the warehouse workers. They’re the lowest tier jobs you can hold in Amazon.
I don’t think there are going to be too many complaints from the educated employees, frankly.
tbh sometimes i just play video games for a day or two when i know i know i have a light sprint lol. "what did you do today (its tuesday)", "ummm this and that, should be done by friday". Does it on thursday lol.
😂😂😂 true that
What cracks me up is being a System admin, this is similar to my everyday life now adays lol. Great content.
The "WTF why is this not working" is 1000% accurate 😂😂
This is so accurate with the “turn on your camera” “you’re on mute” 😅
That's awesome, totally accurate ✌🏽
bro.. I thought I got paged when I started the video. My hands are shaking now, thanks.
Oooppps😅🙈
Dude! That's exactly how my days go by
I´ve never been in the US (I´m from Bavaria, Germany) but it seems that Seattle is a pretty lovely place to be. Awesome video, awesome work and that zoom call was very accurate. I guess the whole working stuff was clearly based on real situations every person working in software business experienced every day. 😂
The product manager asking about the hamburger menu killed me.
LOL he has nothing in his fridge. so relatable
LMAOO
that kind of alarm gives you PTSD when you''ve had a stressful week
I like ironic music you've chosen for this video!
Relatable! Loved watching your videos bro 😄
love your content dude !! keep on :)
Man, I live in Brazil and so, things here are very complicated to get, but watching your videos gives me an absurd desire to study and learn about this area, I've always had a lot of affinity with the computer I've always liked to use, but I've never been able to program anything like that, and I want to know from you what are the steps to be where you are now
You can do it !!! Let’s too!!
estou na mesma situação bro
na mesma também: brasileiro sofre
Amazon (the company where Albert works) has an office in São Paulo with 200+ developers. You could apply to work there and try a transfer to Seattle later on. It's possible, keep studying and you will get there.
@@gabrielgiordanob Thank you very much my man, I was in need of this kind of advice, I feel much more motivated to study and follow this path
This is the story of my life... Subscribed for the accuracy xD
Nice video mate. Probably the only wfh video...which didn't bore me.
Ayyyy glad you liked it 😎
FINALLY a legitim day in the life video, congrats!
thank you so much brutha!!
"Why is it called a burger menu?" you did the PM dirty lol
The accuracy on that zoom call 😂😂
holy i left amazon a while ago but that page sound INSTANTLY raises my cortisol levels.....
"if you are talking you are on mute"
-----5 days later-----
"Yes I was on mute"
This is absolutely correct
very cool video man!! really enjoyed it!
the burger library, that was funny. :D
getting paged was really hard especially when it is only happen on your day. Once I took like 2 day shift so I can swap it with someone else during actual holiday. The amount of issue happened during those 2 days happened outside working hours and actually in sleeping time. I recommend to not stay til midnight when it's your to take on duty call next day because next morning it's already yours and no one knows when shits hit the fan
Dude I get PTSD from hearing that oncall paging sound🤣🤣
Haha the Product manager depiction is spot on 😂
😂😂😂
great job, Albert.
Loved watching this video bro. I can totally relate as an Software Developer :D Keep sharing :)
Hahaha didn't know you're a software engineer as well cheers man
This is much more real than it should be :)
Can’t say the shower happens every time but definitely the dog love.
Hahaha definitely for the doggos😍
production issues are the worst. I hated being at a bar and bam getting alerted for production issues lol
Love the video, meetings are exactly like that haha
Definitely see the inspiration from Joma Tech lol. Good stuff man
This is so on point. Im dyingggg lol
Ah, nothing like the PTSD caused by pong waking you up :D As an aside, I guess you had to get AWS security to approve/review the vid? They should do a whole series on this for different job families for recruiting and other awareness stuff (although they'll never be able to do day in life for security or DCO haha)
I heard the pong alarm and my heart rate doubled.
Lol I hate morning stand ups when I know the previous day I didn't do much 😭
Hello. I'm a young programmer from Russia, I hope I didn't scare you with this). Cool content and a beautiful picture.
Nailed it. Groundhog Day for me.
The fact you pointed out reading some stuff to improve your code 👌👌👌
I so love your videos the coffee cup had me and I rolling with laughter with the different personalities lit 🔥
thank you so much!!
As a wfh swe in Seattle, this is 100% accurate down to the contents of my fridge (only difference is I never have to be on call thank God lol)
what so bad about the call are other competitive or toxic ?
Damn the alarm at the beginning, I thought my alarm went off. Scare the shit out of me lol
Accurate stuff! Especially the standup😂
It is really interesting!
Might be in Seattle lol one of my destinations I wanna work after I finish my classes lol
ARRRRR This will be me in September when I come to Seattle lol... looking forward to it... life as SDE looks chill
Hi, I'm Moein, a Web developer. I was rolling when I watched the second your alarm goes off and it reminds me my routine. I hope the best for you Albert.
thank you so much!
Watching this during on-call 🚨
Another great video. Looking forward to more!
really appreciate that dude!
It's the alarm sound for me 😭😂. Lovely video. Thanks
hahahaha thank you'!
So relatable, and I'm in Seattle too!
It amazes me how smart se are, I wish I understood a fraction of what you guys do.
Had to subscribe and get you one follower closer to 10k! This is the second video of yours that’s popped up on my feed and both are great quality! You’ll be counting down to 50k in no time man, keep up the grind. Loving the content
Thank you so much man!! Really appreciate the support 🙏🏻😌
This was very interesting. Please do another lol.
Man i feel that alarm! My rotation starts next monday for our oncall, lol…
Oh good luck hahaha
loved every video 🔥
Raising PRs seconds before standup calls was just our things 😉
