"a genius but someone who has put a lot of work into his skill" THIS. THIS IS IT.
For some reason, because all the characters constantly call Kageyama a 'genius', a lot of people think that his character is 'unrealistic' because of his talent, or that he has it easy compared to other characters that have to work hard. They seem to have conveniently forgotten that Kageyama's life literally revolves around volleyball,. He's never one to say no to extra practice AND he's not too prideful to pick up skills from other people even if he was, arguably, more technically skilled than them. He never asked to be called a genius, he just wants to play volleyball for as much and as long as he can.

    • @Revoltine
      @Revoltine 3 года назад +118

This is literally how most people who are ignorant of how life skills work view "talent". Talent doesn't shine on its own. Talent blooms when it's cultivated. You don't get to cultivate talent without exerting an inordinate amount of effort into it.

I personally think that the coach said “how cruel” because he is imagining how good they could have been after seeing how good they are now after only just meeting. He is Imagining how good Kageyama and Hinata could be if they had years to practice and play together instead of just a couple of weeks. And the fact that they never met until now is “cruel.”

even though the translation writes that Asahi said "I'll do my best too"
The literal translation of what he actually said to hinata is: "I will not lose to you." in a form of friendly competition of who's gonna be the best.

Japanese names work like this: Last names come first, followed by the first name. Hinata Shoyo: Hinata is his family name. Shoyo his given name.
Also, one thing I'm afraid you misunderstood is the response Hinata gave after Kageyama's speech. He no longer thinks that the position of "the strongest decoy" is uncool. Kageyama got through to him. That position is cool as fuck because he's the one that the opposition will be consistently worrying about. Azumane Asahi might be the Ace because of his brute hitting strength and reliability but Hinata is Kageyama's greatest weapon in a sense. It's the club he brings out to beat down the opponents in his way indiscriminately time and time again. Hinata is to be feared. He's to be marked. That's the point and ultimately what Karasuno as a team want you to do.
Love these video, keep them coming. You could improve your attention span during the episodes a bit... but really don't overthink it. If it's too much hassle then just keep doing what you're doing and you're bound to get better at this with time :=)

Man, absolutely everyone gets thrown off by that "How cruel" line. I think it might be the worst translated line in the entire show.
It actually means something closer to, "What a shame," or, "That's unexpected." Coach hit it right on the head though: they have such good teamwork and chemistry that you wonder where they would be if they had known each other earlier.
Btw: because the ages for Jr. High and high school are different in Japan, one might consider Jr. High sports the equivalent of high school Jr. Varsity: think high school freshmen, not 6th through 8th graders. Which is why they make a bigger deal about it.

"How cruel" is actually wrong translated. Ukai said "Hijou da na" Hijou's kanji literally means not (非) and everyday (常), so it could translate it as “unusually” or “abnormally.” The correct translation of "Hijou da na" would be "That's abnormal".

“-chan” is used for girls/ close friends of equal or lower standing than you
“-kun” is for boys of equal or lower standing than you
“-san” is for someone above you and is similar to Ms/ Mr
“Sensei” is for professional person mostly heard for teachers (like Tekada sensei)

the reason Ukai said "how cruel" is because he can see hinatas inexperience in this match and he knows that if they did grow up knowing eachother then they'd both be a lot better, hinata through being on an actual team and kagyama having hinata to mellow him out so he didnt end up becoming the "dictator king"

Yeah, I think so too. If they had met before in middle school, Hinata would have someone to practice with, have support, guidance and more experience. They could have depended on one another. They both could have experienced much more growth in volleyball and in themselves.

Just want to point out that in Japan, there are three main tournaments for the high school volleyball team to be played, Inter High in the summer, the national athletic meet in the autumn and the Haruko in the spring. In both Inter High and Haruko, there’s only one spot for each metropolitan area to qualify for the national championship, and only areas like Tokyo, Osaka and Hokkaido will have an extra spot. So in Haikyuu and of course in reality, all high school students dream of qualifying for the national championship and try to do their best to win it.

Just wanted to say I really appreciate all the extra information, videos, pictures and references you put up on screen for us to understand what you're talking about better! Especially when you use real games to illustrate -- it must take ages to find relevant parts with good camera angles as an example and then have to edit them in. But all of it really makes your videos so fun to watch.
++ I'm also really amazed at how you pick out and explain things which the series eventually gets to as well!! (not gonna name any parts bc I don't want to spoil them) but it just makes me appreciate the anime/manga so much more bc I realise how much research the author/animators also did before making the series.

You’ll see the reason why Ukai said, “how cruel” means in later episodes. The reason deeply involved in how Kageyama is talented and how Suga is ordinariness. Haikyuu is never talking about how good talented player, but there are some player can be called “genius”. This is the reality. Then, is there any meanings that ordinary people’s struggling in front of such overwhelming talent? I think Haikyuu is talking about how each people face this question in their own way especially Suga and Oikawa who made aware of their own ordinariness by genius Kageyama.
Of course, talent is not everything. I believe many factors needs to be a “good player”. But the more competitive the more you compare your skills to better player’s skills. I think anybody who trying hard on things will go through it.
Sorry for my awkward English and it’s just my thoughts.

I read somewhere that in Haikyuu the popularity pools for characters are really difficult because almost every character in there, no matter how minor role he has, gets at least some points and the distribution is more equal then everywhere else. Because... all the characters are lovable in their own way and almost everyone has it's own fandom.
Say any name from Haikyuu in the fandom and you will get at least 10 people telling you how awesome that character is :D
    And I think that's beautiful.

The "How cruel" coach Ukai said is actually related to him later saying "wait to get picked vs being a picker".
More specifically he is talking about the two setters, Kageyama and Suga. Suga is more experienced and has better communication with his teammates, yet Kageyama has superior skills and talents, and the "How cruel" he sighed is referring to how cruel it is that with his talents, Kageyama can build this amazing duo (both about skill and mentally understanding) with Hinata in such a short time, while this kind of connection with teammates normally takes way longer and should only be more accessible for more experienced players like Suga.
In short the "cruel" sigh is referring to how talents can brutally surpass experience and connection accumulated via time, and how cruel it is to see this happens.

Kageyama says to Hinata what he can do NOW. Having no other skills than his physical ability he cannot go against blockers like Asahi does. In other terms: do what you can do the best now, but practice to get better. Kageyama is actually helping Hinata understand that what he has now - a jumping ability and speed are his greatest assets and the fact that he always goes in full throttle into a game, which makes him a perfect decoy. Kageyama knows Hinata cannot change his physique but in this scene he admits that Hinata has what other players don't - his ability to jump, his speed and yearning to win and unbreakable will.
In other words: no matter the position - everyone is crucial to winning in VB.
Asahi is a first name and Asahi is the second player, after Daichi to be called by his first name. Azumane is his family name, so in Japanese he is called: Azumane Asahi. (family name usually comes first).

Japanese teacher here: names can be a bit tricky, because how Japanese people refer to others depends on their relative age/rank, but if you figure out a few things, it can really deepen appreciation for this and other series. For Asahi Azumane, The 1st- and 2nd-years refer to him as Azumane-san or sometimes Asahi-san, but Suga and Daichi just call him 'Asahi' (no '-san', which we call "tame-go" or "same-age speech"). It's common on sports teams (in Japan and in many cultures) to call everyone by their last names or a nickname, so 'Hinata' is basically just 'Hinata.' Only really Noya calls him by his first name, Shoyo.
This will become explicit later on in the series, but many of the names in this series have deeper meanings, mostly playing on either "light / dark", "sun / moon/shade," or "crows / flying":
    ・Hi-nata Sho-yo (日向 翔陽) Sun-facing Soar-sunlight
    ・Kage-yama Tobi-o (影山 飛雄) Shade-mountain Fly-heroic
    ・Tsuki-shima Kei (月島 蛍) Moon-island Firefly
・Azuma-ne Asahi (東峰 旭) East-peak Dawn (from "sun rises in the east")
    ・U-kai Kei-shin (烏養 繋心) Crow-nurture Connect-mind/heart

its so fun how asahi is depecited as a gentle giant, it so much more nuanced, like, if the character mechanic is to be strong, the cliche angle would be make him angry and agressive, but the author took another route

i think that the reason coach ukai says "how cruel" when he learns that hinata and kageyama have just become friends is because of how strong their trust is. despite only playing together for a few weeks, hinata has his full trust in kageyama, and kageyama knows exactly how hinata works. when you consider how much they will grow and evolve throughout the next few years, their potential is a duo is so overwhelmingly powerful that it's cruel to the other teams they will play against.

    • @celinesiebert4858
      @celinesiebert4858 3 года назад +3

They are not friends, they can just rely really good on each other. Same as Kuroko no Basuke with Kuroko and Kagami:
Kuroko: I'll help you to become the best player in Japan.
Kageyama: As long you have me you'll be inivincible.

    • @mantaren

"How cruel" was about the fact that Kageyama was clearly going to straight up replace the starting setter who had been training with this team for years, just by practicing with a hitter for a couple of weeks. It's cruel how the person who harnessed experience, reliability and trust gets immediately benched by someone who only now showed up with their natural talents and inclinations. Expected and makes total sense, but still cruel.

This actually reminds me of Naruto and Sasuke's first combined attack against the 10-tails. 2nd Hokage said that it was a combination that was difficult to pull off even for seasoned veterans. That's how I see the "freak quick attack". It's cruel to seasoned veterans who will never be able to pull it off, because Hinata and Kageyama make it look so easy.

Im actually super happy bc Coach Donny sees how much Takeda has sacrificed just for the club, he was the one who didnt mind getting embarrassed, he was the one who would beg just for a coach or a practice match, he loved those boys so much he would do sacrifice his whole life for them

Azumane is Asahi's last name. It's custom in Japan to call one another by their last name + honorifics (-san, -kun etc). First names are used between friends, family members etc.

I LOVE playing against stronger teams! It makes me feel like I up my own game. Especially true when I'm playing co-ed. It's so satisfying to be able to put up a block against 6'6 guys when I'm a 5'10 girl XD
Also, Kageyama and communication. 😏 for those who have watched the earlier episodes for the newest season.

The connection between Kageyama and Hinata can seem magical and close to impossible, but it should be noted that Kageyama has the talent of a legitimate world-class setter. He is probably the single most talented player in the series.
