as a born and raised japanese, we had cleaning time in our schedule after lunch (in my elementary and middle school). Everyone was assigned to go clean everything in school like teacher's staffroom, principal's office, bathrooms, gym, classrooms etc. I didn't know schools in North America had janitors until I moved when I was 18. Well, I feel like Iwaizumi would've been a better captain since he's way more mature, but I think he's fit to be captain. He isn't captain because he's the best player, he's the captain for a reason.
@@claracatlady9844 I don't think Oikawa has any character development at all. His personality and character doesn't change at all. He's just who he is throughout
Me, every single time Coach Danny 's commenting on stuff, both good & bad: "Damn, guy might know his stuff but that's exactly why he's actually not ready for Haikyuu bc he's gonna love this journey way more than what he expected when he first start the series lol"
They all have episodes that bring up things from their experience and every time it happens they seem to get sucked further and further in. It's one of the amazing things about this show that I love. No other anime has been able to grab the sport it's based around to the point of getting players and couches that don't even watch anime to watch it and enjoy doing so.
Coach! One good thing to understand is that this tournament is the last for most 3rd Years. There are more tournaments later in the year, but typically most 3rd Years will 'retire' from club activities halfway through the year to fully commit to studying for college entrance exams or prepping for their career. Some of the really good school will have 3rd Years stick around longer, but in general it's highly discouraged
"play like the score doesn't matter" *This is literally what I need for every sport I play..* I wonder how many tines I've learned from coach Donny.. countless of times already..
@@locomojoboy2 That interpretation doesn't make sense, if you looked at it that way, then just don't bother playing (why bother even putting in the meager effort to try?) It means play for something intrinsic in nature. Score a point because you're doing everything you can to get by the opponents defenses. Defend/block a shot because there's no way you're letting someone get one by you. Make plays because you're 100% going to outwit your opponent. None of the things you do should be *just* based on what you see on the scoreboard (but consequently if you do play like that you'll see your score go up anyways.)
I would really look into maybe getting some mods for the comment section, a lot of people seem to be really excited and don't realize they're dropping character development spoilers. They're still spoilers! Especially when they determine whether or not Coach likes a character, let his opinion change throughout the show and not because someone commented a bunch of future reasons why he will like a character.
There's a reason Oikawa is the captain. He's a bit of a sleazeball off the court, but in-game he's a fantastic leader and a setter who understands his team more than almost anyone else.
@Withro Anime Edits .....Lea B said that. "oikawa's whole concept is the guy who is *not* a naturally born genius but the one who puts in the most effort"
Oikawa us actually a very good captain. As all of his team mates believe in him and he believes in their abilities and is a setter that brings out the best in his players
yeah but coach donny doesn't know that yet. He hasn't reached the Aoba josai arc yet. He will realise why the nickname great king actually suits Oikawa
spoiler of first 2 seasons. I disagree, i dont see how Oikawa would have less heart than iwaizumi. He never thought his teammates were weak even if they actually are. When Iwaizumi did not make the point at the end of season 2 he slapped his back removing all his regrets, he even waited for Iwaizumi before thanking the supporters. He believes in all his teammates and all his teammates believe in him. He has that facade that makes him childish, that makes him less charismatic than Iwaizumi, that's probably why you think Iwaizumi would be a better one. But I don't see how could he be. probably Daichi and Kita, even if are not that alike, are the representation of the best captain, Oikawa still is a solid one. Iwaizumi is just cool and a hard worker but he lacks communication skills, has not the same analyzing skill and sense of the game as oikawa. Anyways i think that Seijou strenght is in all his third years students, they complete each other, making a really solid base for the newer players.
One of the best thing in coach Donny reactions is that hes not worried about looking at the camera all the time when he speaks so he dont lose nothing of the show like people normally do
YES omg this is something that kinda annoys me about some reaction channels that they tend to look up when commenting while the episode's still playing so they lose important pieces of dialogue
I think this might be consider spoiler: "Best person to be a captain but not even a starter" oh i see, coach will have something to say about one particular captain in the future
Spoilers for manga.... . . . . . . But lets be honest, the time skip was rushed, unexpected, and the story kinda ends there.(character development (major/minor alike) after timeskip was good tho) The whole bj vs ald was a match to show hinata's win against kageyama(as called out by hinata at the start of series) and the last chapter (401/402) were just a "happily ever after" to the story
@@lalchan spoiler~~ I mean, I agree it was unexpected, and I understand why you say it's rushed, BUT I much prefer how it went. If you think how it would've been to see it go through all highschool it would've neeever been the same, we'd all miss the main Karasuno cast, and in general there'd have probably been lots of complaints on repetition. I'm just saying, so I'm sorry if I misunderstood the tone of your comment... I just wished there could've been a bit more in the aftermath of that MSBY and SA match XD I loved Brazil and the timeskip, although I did get in late to week to week, like in the last 15 chapter I think, so I know binge reading feels different. I believe Furudate made the right call to end it on a high note that would've been impossible to get any higher, since that's where a lot of shows get flame because of dragging on. (I still want more Haikyuu tho... damn...)
@@lalchan spoilers nope. i'm glad they did the time skip. there was no reason to continue the story with their second and third years, introducing more unnecessary characters. it would have prolonged the anime too much. yeah it wouldve been nice to see captain yamaguchi or kinoshita perfecting his jump floater, or tanaka being the new ace, but it wasnt needed. i loved the skip. it was just what haikyuu needed. the story isnt about karasuno, it's about volleyball (and hinata, of course!).
Yo Coach. The Manga actually ended this Summer. The Anime only adapted round about half of the Manga's story up until now, so don't worry. There is much more to come ;D
That episode is always one of my favourite, specifically the first half. I never played volleyball, but i was always a very competitive kid who played other sports and such. Unfortunately despite wanting work hard, ive never been the most talented player so i was often a part of programs that just didnt have the same drive to win as i did, and this episode is so good at capturing that really crushing feeling you get when you lose against a team who you know worked harder and deserved to move on. I also really appreciate the way this episode puts in perspective these tournaments. Everyone here is fighting to keep playing because the moment you stop fighting, you are kicked out. Because Karasuno are the protagonists its easy to see the teams the defeat as just hurdles on the way to victory, but this episode reminds the audience that everyone is the protagonist of their own story. Also dont worry about trying to remember the chant lol, they definitely play it enough that its honestly harder to forget. (same goes with a lot of the future teams)
One thing I've always loved about haikyuu is how they love the "side characters." I say that in quotes because they treat all players like a main character. They have depth, motivation and reason for wanting to win.
I like that Haikyuu treats the less hardworking teams with empathy. The show adresses their shortcomings, but it shows that they are also just people with emotions. I love that about Haikyuu, that every character gets treated with respect and empathy by the narrative, no matter if they are a good player or not.
"you cannot pick and choose when you're gonna work your hardest" so true, coach. and this works not only just for volleyball or sports but also life in general. give it 100% always and make it your habit and your work ethic
cant wait to hear your perspective on oikawa’s backstory🙃✌🏻 he may be a dork sometimes but he’s reallly hardworking and is very influential for the team^^
27:15 Haikyuu has a ton of eyecatchers. They only need so many to reference what core elements are currently being played on in the show but Haikyuu delivers such depth and personality they just made a butt-ton!
Coach! This episode has an after credits scene showing Asahi's point of view during the rolling thunder moment It's not really important but i thought I should say incase you were super curious.
it's a cultural thing that we do. i used to play tennis in middle school and we cleaned the court after every practice and said "thank you" to the court as we walked out to stretch and wrap up off the court. when i went to a karate dojo, we were told to bow and "greet" the dojo when entering, to thank when leaving. greetings and cleaning amplify appreciation for the space and environment (including the coach and parents who support students).
"having practices/getting to play another game is a privilege" "it's a privilege to be tired" "complaining is also a privilege you have to earn" i love how this theme appeared over the course of the episode. some good philosophy here! humility is important to keep close to you and remind you to keep working hard.
I really liked how in middle school, Ikejiri (Daichi’s middle school friend) lost his last set 13-25. But in his last high school set, he loses 14-25. Just goes to show how important one point can be.
Ya'll more than anything, coach's analytical review on the player's play/positions/habits makes me feel giddy. I love how someone looks at the anime in a practical manner. Most of us just sees the episode and the characters, but having someone explain the anime in a deeper detail makes me excited and that's why I really love coach's reviews
Haikyuu is a really amazing slow burn story. There are lots and lots of foreshadowing you might complain & probably won't realize now, that would make suuuper great pay off in the future, which make your 1454775th rewatch/reread of this series worth it. One of the reason why watching thousands of reactions vids like this enjoyable really. Like season 1 is so so SO good already but it's regarded by many as Haikyuu's weakest season if ones were to rank the seasons, bc this is just the beginning & a setup for everyone journeys so I'm really excited going into this journey again with you especially bc of your amazing insights that I might miss on my rewatch/reread before, so thank you :))
I appreciate your words about how having a season/tournament/coach is a privilege. A bunch of us, who got into volleyball after highschool don’t have any of that until we work hard enough to get there. I desperately wish I had a coach and a team all year long. Don’t take that stuff for granted
In Japan, cleaning one's own classroom and school is a part of their school education. The "chores" they have responsability over vary from grade to grade, for example first graders normally clean and maintain their classrooms, serve lunch to their classmates and might even clean the toiletes, last one depending on the school, while high schoolers will do all of the above and some more like cleaning up the gym and club rooms after each practice. Though is not mandatory by the government, it's considered a standard practice that allows the students to grow up as more responsible citizens. It's one of the reasons why there's rarely any littering in Japan and why "cleaning scenes" are common in high school life related anime.
From season 1, this is one of my all time favorite episodes. I’m always moved by the author’s conscious choice to highlight that for every win, someone else will lose. It hurts, it’s frustrating. I’ve experienced this in every sport I’ve played. But when it doesn’t drive you to try harder, it becomes a bitter experience. I also like the way it portrays how healthy teams actually become closer after losing together, rather than focusing on blame or regret. A very underrated episode imo.
I LOVE that "If all this were a work of fiction the guys who go to nationals would be the protagonists, and the rest of us would just be extras. But, regardless, we got to play volleyball." because there are no secondary characters in Haiykuu. They're all important, and they all have their own story to tell, with their strenghts and their weaknesses. I love this anime so much :)))
Oikawa on and off the court is different tho. There are people who looks like they only goof off but is actually a pretty serious person hahah. He's a completely different person when it comes to volleyball.
This episode is amazing. Every sports story needs that first “easy” game to show us how well the boys have grown but by having the story focus on the losers and their perspective, the show gets to give us a little something extra...
I thought I would like him after watching his background story, but I hate him even more... He's a child thinking he's super awesome.. He seems like a great captain but you can see how superior to everyone he think he is... And his motivations are super-selfish... I'm hoping for more development after S01 because with all information I have about him right now, I don't have any respect for him
@@brunokingz lmao😂 I don't even know if you're joking or not... If you aren't then you must be privileged enough to not know what hard work and effort means

This has got to be one of the best episodes in the entire series! The way that the Furudate sensei makes use of what would usually be called a "side character" and yet make them be the star and feel like they were the protagonist isn't easy to achieve and many of us remember all of the opponents that Karasuno and even other "main" teams have because of the way sensei has highlighted them well enough, not too much but not too little. It always astounds me that he makes us care about the loss to people we meet even in an episode or two. I get why Oikawa might not be considered a good captain but I hope coach will see how good he is in the upcoming episodes! But, even if he doesn't I like that coach still acknowledges that Oikawa is a good player!
Did you guys notice how some of the scenes shows the point of view of the team that is losing? It's a great storytelling of how losing feels. Not that it's bad to lose but it shows that losing is just a part of the game.
When you said, "Being the best player has nothing to do with being a good leader", it hit me in the feels a bit. My table tennis coach in high school picked me to be captain, even though I was nowhere near a good player. I used to be confused as to why I was leading a team of people so much better than I was, and it only took after she passed away for me to realise what she saw in me. Thank you for highlighting this in the video.
No joke, I tried watching other reactors but I always come back to watching yours. Your sincerity and dedication to watching the anime as well as educating us speak volumes. Arigatou, sensei!
The pain of defeat is a huge theme is sport anime. As most modern tropes it was defined by Hajime no Ippo, a boxing anime. Ippo keeps winning because he's the protagonist, and we see defeat from the side of the opponents. Some are risking their career, some left their families to be there, whenever Ippo wins you are made aware of what it meant for the one who looses. Until Ippo challenges someone that's actually a world ahead of him, not only his superior in training and knowledge, but someone who just can't let himself be defeated. And its a multiple episode arc of Ippo realizing he lost, getting to know this new feeling, accepting it and breaking down. Super emotional stuff.
honestly, oikawa is a great captain. he leads more through words and his playing than actions, but he’s incredible. his actual setting doesn’t stand out, but he brings out the best in his team and motivates everyone without putting them down. that’s why he’s the captain!

I've watched volleyball players reacting haikyu having flashbacks and triggered in the middle of reaction so yeah true hahaha
They all have episodes that bring up things from their experience and every time it happens they seem to get sucked further and further in. It's one of the amazing things about this show that I love. No other anime has been able to grab the sport it's based around to the point of getting players and couches that don't even watch anime to watch it and enjoy doing so.
I love how him realise he going say something and just rewind because him cant find that one word
That "Go go, lets go , lets go, dateko " will get stuck in your head.

And to make a small clip of Tanaka celebration too :)

Honestly, as a manga reader, when he said "Make it a habit" I nearly started to cry ...

"play like the score doesn't matter"
*This is literally what I need for every sport I play..*
I wonder how many tines I've learned from coach Donny.. countless of times already..
Then that means players shouldn’t worry about trying hard... since scores don’t matter and all....
@@locomojoboy2 That interpretation doesn't make sense, if you looked at it that way, then just don't bother playing (why bother even putting in the meager effort to try?)
It means play for something intrinsic in nature.

One school year in Japan starts in April and ends mid-March the next year. That's why it wasn't even a year after Date Kogyo defeated Karasuno.
The Beef between coach and oikawa is so funny xD
True I cant stop laughing
There's a reason Oikawa is the captain. He's a bit of a sleazeball off the court, but in-game he's a fantastic leader and a setter who understands his team more than almost anyone else.
yes and oikawa's whole concept is the guy who is not a naturally born genius but the one who puts in the most effort so great example for his team.
I still think Iwazumi is the better leader. He has the right attitude both on and off the court.
@Withro Anime Edits I think you may have misread the comment you're replying to.
@Withro Anime Edits .....Lea B said that.
"oikawa's whole concept is the guy who is *not* a naturally born genius but the one who puts in the most effort"
Can you guys stop spoiling for like 5 seconds and let this man meet the characters properly instead of trying to tell him how to feel
Oikawa us actually a very good captain. As all of his team mates believe in him and he believes in their abilities and is a setter that brings out the best in his players
I still think that Iwaizumi would be a better one. Oikawa may be the brain, Iwaizumi still is the heart
You described all the attributes that make him a good player but not a good captain
He will understand it in the future. This is basically a slight spoiler about his character
yeah but coach donny doesn't know that yet.
Spoiler:
Coach donny actually completely nailing the prediction this time.

But lets be honest, the time skip was rushed, unexpected, and the story kinda ends there.(character development (major/minor alike) after timeskip was good tho)
The whole bj vs ald was a match to show hinata's win against kageyama(as called out by hinata at the start of series) and the last chapter (401/402) were just a "happily ever after" to the story
@@lalchan spoiler~~
I mean, I agree it was unexpected, and I understand why you say it's rushed, BUT I much prefer how it went.
(I still want more Haikyuu tho... damn...)
@@lalchan spoilers
nope. i'm glad they did the time skip. there was no reason to continue the story with their second and third years, introducing more unnecessary characters. it would have prolonged the anime too much. yeah it wouldve been nice to see captain yamaguchi or kinoshita perfecting his jump floater, or tanaka being the new ace, but it wasnt needed. i loved the skip. it was just what haikyuu needed. the story isnt about karasuno, it's about volleyball (and hinata, of course!).
I think you'll find Oikawa being an excellent example of a good mentality.
oikawa is a good captain and a good setter and he really love and respect volleyball qwq his character is one of my fav along with tsukki.

"Go! Go! Let's go! Let's go!" chant is very common in Japanese school sports.
Dateko just fits there really nicely
I like that Haikyuu treats the less hardworking teams with empathy. The show adresses their shortcomings, but it shows that they are also just people with emotions. I love that about Haikyuu, that every character gets treated with respect and empathy by the narrative, no matter if they are a good player or not.
Finally!!! *Coach Donny's amazing work is here!*
A couple of days feels like a really long time when you wait for something you *really* like.
"you cannot pick and choose when you're gonna work your hardest"
so true, coach. and this works not only just for volleyball or sports but also life in general. give it 100% always and make it your habit and your work ethic
cant wait to hear your perspective on oikawa’s backstory🙃✌🏻 he may be a dork sometimes but he’s reallly hardworking and is very influential for the team^^
27:15 Haikyuu has a ton of eyecatchers. They only need so many to reference what core elements are currently being played on in the show but Haikyuu delivers such depth and personality they just made a butt-ton!

it's a cultural thing that we do. i used to play tennis in middle school and we cleaned the court after every practice and said "thank you" to the court as we walked out to stretch and wrap up off the court. when i went to a karate dojo, we were told to bow and "greet" the dojo when entering, to thank when leaving. greetings and cleaning amplify appreciation for the space and environment (including the coach and parents who support students).

Everyone when they heard about Tom Hoff:
“Oh, we know that type of captain”
The way coach donny sees oikawa ("k-pop setter") is gonna change soon
And might have respect for him
I thought I would like him after watching his background story, but I hate him even more... He's a child thinking he's super awesome..

"Complaining is a right you have to earn." - uff. That hurts because its so...damn true.
I'm not play volleyball or athlete, but I'm crying over this episode. I love how they show other teams viewpoint.
You will understand how great a captain Oikawa is
honestly, oikawa is a great captain. he leads more through words and his playing than actions, but he’s incredible. his actual setting doesn’t stand out, but he brings out the best in his team and motivates everyone without putting them down. that’s why he’s the captain!
basically there are 2 big high school tournaments, and one after, however most third years retire after the inter high (current arc)
