      Absolutely and his will to fight for his place in the team! He were frightened of his strong will to stand on that court and maybe he saw himself in Suga and knows how much it took Suga to admit that and still have the will to fight. He saw the fire in Sugas eyes still burning imo.

      Yeah I love how Suga framed it. He was basically saying "I want more chances to be on the court, and the more we win the more chances I'll have even if I'm not the starter. So pick the best team to win and I'll keep working hard for the chances I get."

    Btw about the location, they're at a cabin nearby school. I think it's because they have teammates like Hinata who lives far away. So that they can focus and immediately go to practice instead of worrying how to get to the school gym everyday, even on weekends.
    Maybe to build up that chemistry too, like a team building but with practice, by sleeping, eating and bathing together

    • @to.ri.3
      @to.ri.3 3 года назад +30

      It happens often in sports manga (probably in real life school clubs too ^^). They make use of holidays (like the golden week) to practice from morning until evening. That is why they have a sleep over, not because some of them live far, or because they have to build camaraderie and such (although of course eating and sleeping in the same place make them personally closer to each other).

    • @michellepehrsondupont3756
      @michellepehrsondupont3756 3 года назад +2

      @@to.ri.3 It definitely depends on the club. I was part of a 'circle' at the Japanese University I was in exchange at (a bit more lenient than proper bukatsu in Japan). It was a circle that organized social events for the international and japanese students to mingle,and we went on two camps. The first one was in April (the start of the school year) and was definitely a kind of mixer camp, where the senpai in the circle got to know us new people. The one in the summer was more serious, and while there was still playing and having fun (like a kimodameshi (test of courage)), that camp was also where we planned activities for the rest of the year.
      I think, for sports clubs, the focus is probably very much on training and practice matches, but I do think that building relationships and teamwork is an important factor for why they do training camps.

    When Ukai talks about "the team that connects wins", he means "the team that keeps the ball in play wins". "Connect" is used to mean "keep the string of passes and hits connected/unbroken." Ultimately the thing that matters at the end of the day is keeping the ball in play. It's interesting that Ukai says this here, because Nekoma showcases this same philosophy towards volleyball when taken to the extreme.

    • @iNovak-HSR
      @iNovak-HSR 3 года назад +39

      I think that "connect" is used in two ways. First, to connect with yout teammates. Second, to connect the ball with the floor, to score points.

    • @liandryss905
      @liandryss905 3 года назад +9

      Yeps, Nekoma's whole philosophy as a team is to always ALWAYS connect the ball. They're a very grindy type of team; willing to lose a set (on bo3's) just to see how their opponent plays or just to add stress and fatigue.

    • @to.ri.3
      @to.ri.3 3 года назад +1

      Is it the usage of the word "connect" in the translation that is a little off the point? Because as far as I understand it, the word "connect" in the whole manga (and anime) always means "keep the ball in play" and never "be a cohesive team", or any other connotation. It's always about solid receive/passing, and not about teamwork. Although, of course teamwork is also a major theme in the series ^^/

    • @cfardale5253
      @cfardale5253 3 года назад +4

      @@to.ri.3 The literal translation is the word "connect", but in JP Volleyball it seems like it literally means physically connect with the ball with your hand/arm/body. Just get a hand on it to keep it in play. From what I read on a JP volleyball site, I can't see any nuance behind it. just: defense defense defense. receive is ichi ban! but yeah, that word is directly translatable yet still feels off.

    • @t3cchan
      @t3cchan 3 года назад +2

      @@to.ri.3 Yeah, I would say that directly replacing "tsunagu" with "connect" isn't the best possible translation. It is very easy for the full meaning of a sentence to get lost when you directly replace words like they did in this instance.

    It's maybe cool to notice that when Hinata met Kenma the first time, Hinata behaved like a typical "village" kid and Kenma like a "city" kid. Kenma grew up in big city Tokyo, so you don't try to engage with strangers so much, especially those introverted in nature - which he is. That's why he was looking at his phone so much, making minimal eye contact when he talks.
    Hinata, growing up in small remote places where everyone knew each other, feels comfortable enough to talk to anyone. You see that especially when Kenma doesn't give too much response about why he's there (usually an incentive for people to get bored and see themselves out), Hinata jumps down next to him and asks if what he's playing is fun, engaging more. In the end I think Kenma likes this special openness that Hinata has.
    Of course, definitely not saying that all kids growing up in such and such places are always like that. Just noticing the trend in these two. I feel it's much harder to bump into a Hinata-type in a metropolis than a Kenma-type.

    The line "don’t believe in yourself, believe in the me that believes in you" is a reference to the anime that defines "over the top" Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann but is still undisputed for motivational use
    Side note; you mentioned how you write better than you speak but once you’re in your element talking about volleyball or fitness as opposed to directly talking to us the audience, you flow naturally. You‘ll become much smoother in your presentation by the time you get to this point in season 2 at this rate.

    7:26 Kiyoko's(the manager's) full name is *Kiyoko Shimizu* (Kiyoko as first name and Shimizu being her maiden surname)
    Since Tanaka and Noya are...um...very dedicated to Kiyoko they call her by her first name, she never tried to correct them so I think she doesn't mind.
    All the other guys I think are not as comfortable as Noya and Tanaka to call a girl by their first name so they call her by her last name Shimizu
    Same with Asahi and Daichi, Asahi's full name is Asahi Azumane, Kageyama and Tsukki (maybe Yamaguchi too) calls him Azumane out of respect. Hinata, I think he's just going with how Asahi is normally called by the other members.
    Daichi's full name is Daichi Sawamura, you might hear his last name often by strangers or side characters. For the team he's usually called Captain(by the first years) and simply Daichi(by second and third years, except for Kiyoko, I think she calls everyone by their last name, as a girl, she keeps her distance with the guys)

    One of my favorite parts of this episode and entire first season is Ukai to Suga moment.
    Ukai few scenes before that told Takeda how when he was in his 3rd year he was benched for a younger more talented player, and only thing he mentions about it that "he was angry and frustrated" that he was not playing
    Now contrast that with Suga
    Sugawara is in his 3rd year and was just benched for a younger more talented player, instead sulking about it he goes to the Coach and says "put the one of us that will get the team the win" and puts his frustration into getting better himself and helping the team in any way he can. On and off the court.
    Ukai wanted to play no matter what, Suga wants the team to win even if it means he wont be playing. And I think the "I underestimated him" is the moment when Ukai realized all of this and he was not talking about Suga's abilities, but his mentality.

    I think Tanaka and Nishinoya were so excited that they have a training camp with Kyoko, who is their manager, and they thought that she is also staying in the inn. Sugawara then informed them, that she isn't staying there. (Shimizu is Kyoko's last name) and yeah that's why they were lying on the floor because they were so disappointed. But the sight of the beautiful Kyoko gave them the strenght to stand up again. 😂😂

    26:01 and now you understood why Haikyuu is an amazing anime! If people watching this show and thinks that is a Vollyball show first that has great character etc etc... then youa re missing the all point! Haikyuu isnt a Vollybell anime it is a chaaractor study anime! it is about how different people behave as part of a team and how people learn how to grow and to improve themselves! Remember what it was said a few episodes ago Volleyball is a sport that you can only touch the ball ONCE, an this is why teamwork is the most important thing!'.
    If this show was only about bollyball and doing cool moves and stuff it would have been focusing only on Hinata! which the show pretending to do in the first few episode, however, as you will see Hinata isnt even the main episode in most of the episodes and in some he isnt even shown once!

    Since all their names are pretty complicated, I see that you have a difficult time to remember who is who. They also call each other sometimes by their name, sometimes by their last name. Usually Japanese people would call each other by last name out of respect and when they are not all that close. When they are close enough, they would call each other by first name. Here is a review of all the characters. (Last name, first name):
    (Last name First name)
    1st years:
    Kageyama Tobio: number 9 --> setter
    Hinata Shoyo: number 10 --> middle blocker
    Tsukishima Kei (or Tsukki): number 11 --> middle blocker
    Yamaguchi Tadashi: number 12 --> pinch server
    2nd years:
    Nishinoya Yuu (or Noya): number 4 --> Libero
    Tanaka Ryuunosuke (or Ryuu): number 5 --> Wing Spiker
    Ennoshita Chikara: number 6 --> not much scene for him right now as he is not a regular
    Kinoshita Hisashi: number 7 --> not much scene for him right now as he is not a regular
    Narita Kazuhito: number 8 --> not much scene for him right now as he is not a regular
    3rd years:
    Sawamura Daichi: number 1 --> captain
    Sugawara Kooshi (or Suga): number 2 --> setter
    Azumane Asahi: number 3 --> Ace, Wing spiker
    Coach:
    Takeda Ittetsu (or Take-chan) --> the teacher/faculty advisor
    Ukai Keishin --> The actual coach. I remember you asking yourself why he has the same name as his granpa. That's because Ukai is their last name.
    Manager:
    Shimizu Kiyoko (the hot girl whom Tanaka and Nishinoya are fanboys of)
    As you probably already know, usually in East Asia, we order our names as in Last name First name, right? So we call ourselves Son Goku and not Goku Son. Or Uzumaki Naruto, not Naruto Uzumaki.
    I know it's already confusing; it's gonna be even more confusing in the future as more characters will be introduced, and they all call each other by last name or first name.
    Also, to specify, almost every school's name has meaning in it. Like you already know, "Karasu" from "Karasuno" means Crow. "Neko" from "Nekoma" means cat. "Shiratori" from "Shiratorizawa" means White bird, symbolized by the white eagle, and so on.

    8:30 fun fact: Before drawing Haikyuu, Furudate (author's manga) had a high-school horror manga which was a suggestion from his editor in order to improve his drawing skills. I believe this scene is a little nod to his previous work (:
    Also, you'll see that the author uses some techniques from horror in order to illustrate better the expression or thoughts of the characters (such as some takes where you only see the face of the person). Of course that on the anime that's the director and animators work, but since the original manga serves as a "storyboard" for the anime is really cool to see how they adapted this aspect of the original work.

    Hey coach, 2 things:
    1. When coach Ukai said "I underestimated you" to sugawara I think he was refering to underestimating him in the sense that he he didn't think Sugawar would be able to handle being benched and pitied him but Sugawara ended up being able to take it and even advised the couch to bench him if he needed to.
    2. In the last episode, I personally think coach Ukai said "how cruel" because he thought it was cruel to others players that hinata and kageyama synergized and worked together so easily without much prior background compared to players like Sugawara who synergizes well with players because of experience.
    Ps. Ur videos are awesome 😀

    Coach Ukai was amazed at Sugawara's mental strength. Suga's point of view is that he doesn't mind losing out the position of official setter to Kageyama if it means that Karasuno can keep on winning. Once Karasuno loses in a tournament, it's game over for them. Hence Suga wants Coach Ukai to make the choice that would keep Karasuno on the winning path and let them keep playing more official matches against other teams. He's content to be a substitute setter if it means keeping alive the team's dream of making it to nationals once again. It's such a beautiful yet heartbreaking moment that made Suga one of my all time favorite characters. There's no other character in the series like him.

    I absolutely agree. One of the reasons that I love this series so much is because the author focuses on different types of characters. You have those who play with the idea of pursuing the sport in the future, those who play for fun, and those who got dragged along by friends. I feel like it's easy to fall into having a mass amount of overly passionate characters and a sport-centred story, but Haikyuu really brings in everyone.

    One of my favorite details in this series is how Nekoma and Karasuno have such different playing styles, but they also seem to mirror each other's personalities. You'll see more of this in the next episode but I wanted to put it on your radar.
    Another thing I wanted to mention is that with third years, they feel the most pressure for the upcoming tournament because since Japanese schools are year-round, they usually only play the summer interhigh since the spring tournament falls so close to when they'd be studying for college entrance exams. I think the nationals are set during the final few weeks of the school year.
    Also, your reactions are super fun and educational. I've never felt like they were stiff at all so just keep up the good work. We appreciate you!

    1.furudate, the author of haikyuu was a horror manga writer
    2. Tanaka and Nishinoya adore Shimizu a lot by the way she is the karasuno's manager
    3. hinata is very used to running since his house is far from their school and his athletic ability also comes from playing with his friends from the soccer and basketball club
    4. kenma is a very shy type of person and he rarely looks at the people in their eyes

    I personally like how you speak in these videos. Haikyuu!! is an adrenaline filled show for me, but your voice(in my opinion) is super calm, smooth, and constant sounding that it adds a new level of relaxation to the shows.

    The team that connects the ball to the opponent's court wins

    Well, Suga is dependable and unwavered. Kageyama is skillful and gutsy. You will really like how Coach Ukai switches the two of them in the tournament to change the game pace & flow. I hope next year I'll get a calm & dependable setter next year for the high school team I am coaching today. 😊

    24:26 Actually, Nishinoya's dialogue will always sound arrogant but he's constantly noted by many characters to be very humble. It will feel like arrogance, but he's just very straightforward and his statements are, more often than not, very accurate because he never minces his words.

      yes, completely. most likely, trainer ukai thought that suga would perceive the kageyama as the main setter negatively (having such experience personally and with the fact, that it's the last year for suga, one last year to play), but suga personally stated that if he is not good enough, then ukai does not need to worry about what his reaction will be, he understands and will continue training to take a place in the first team, deserving it

    I love how you have been following sugawara's passion for the team despite being moved to the bench due to kageyama. He gets some mind blowing moments later on, I hope to see more commentary about him later from you.
    edit: the three guys who left and then came back (ennoshita, kinoshita, narita) are second years, who left in the first year. They said in the episode that they are the "pathetic second years" so I guess you interpreted that as they were "pathetic" in their second year, when they quit during their first year and have returned now that they are in the second year.

    At 28:02 Coach Ukai explained that they lived up to their "Neko" name. That's because it is the Japanese word for "cat", hence the following sentence mentioning their flexibility. I think he's also implying that the same way cats are said to always land on their feet, when this team plays, the ball always lands on someone's arm and just doesn't seem to ever end up on the floor.

    Thanks for the inspiration coach you always remind me to improve my habits every week. I think you're such a great speaker tbh. Your points are always clear and easy to understand, I'm sure the rest will come later ^^. It's so hard to react and watch an anime and read subtitles at the same time. If you miss anything it's no big deal at all. Thank you for your honest reaction and advice.
    Some names, we meet our second years! They call themselves the "disgraced" group because they "ran away" from old coach Ukai. So in addition to Suga who is a 3rd year the 1st years also replaced a bunch of second year seniors. They don't hold any grudge at all which is just very cool.
    Chikara Ennoshita (Ennoshita-sempai): Black hair wing spiker. Looks like gentle Daichi.
    Kazuhito Narita (Narita-sempai): Baldy middle blocker. Looks like gentle Tanaka.
    Hisashi Kinoshita (Kinoshita-sempai)): Spikey light brown hair wing spiker.

    I'm used to manga and anime (that being said, the only reference I have on Japanese culture are manga and anime LOL), so I don't know...
    to me the way Japanese call each other is pretty easy to track and remember. They use family names by default (such as between Shoyo and Tobio), and switch to first names if they are close (Suga to Asahi and Daichi), some even use nicknames (Yamaguchi to Tsukishima (Tsukki), Daichi to Sugawara (Suga), Tanaka to Takeda-sensei (Take-chan)). Exception: very cool (or childish?) people like Noya who calls everyone by their first names XD.
    So if strangers have only met, I'd quickly relate the names they call each other with as family names. If these strangers' friends call them by a different name, then that'd be the first name. For example, Hinata calls Ennoshita by his family name, and Noya calls him Chikara, so his full name must be Ennoshita Chikara (and it's always family name first, unless if the subtitle uses western style). Asahi's classmates call him Azumane, and Suga who is good friends with him calls him Asahi. So he must be Azumane Asahi.
    By working things out like this, I get to know the characters' full names, and because they are mentioned at separate instances, they're easier to remember. I hope I make some sense ^^'a

    Sorry for commenting so much, let me just say this in advance to save you the trouble, this anime is very "good" there is no evil or mean character, sure some are a bit arrogant or say things to rile the other teaam up on purpose, but unlike other sport animes, where there are really just axxholes, every team in this anime is good and they always have respectful matches, great rivarly and friendships.
    Okay now that is finally all from me :D
