I have 217000 miles and have not experienced any of those issues. However 3 years into ownership I had to replace the radiator fan as one stopped working and the other ran constantly to over compensate. Sagging headliner - I removed center console and front seats and had the headliner replaced for $100. Leaking moonroof - cleaned out the drain lines as they were filled with dirt. It’s a solid car and I’ll drive the wheels off mine.

I have an 08 Jetta with the 2.5 5-speed in it currently at 348k miles, haven't run into any of those issues with it. I did have to replace the gasket on the vacuum pump because it was leaking oil, apparently a common issue.

My friend has a 2006 Jetta, apparently it is one of the most complained years of the Jetta. Sometimes the engine refuses to start that you have to jump start it. It’s to where he has a jump starter in his car.

Number 6- the steering wheel lock breaking leaving your car stuck on or unable to start. Fortunately it’s an easy swap with the replacement and no rekeying needed. Only trouble is getting the security bolts out. Otherwise super easy! I watched RUclips vids on replacing it and I was able to do it! I learned that it’s a common issue in VW and even Audi.

Bought a 2006 TDI from a guy who rebuilds these cars for a living (any TDI basically he rebuilds) with only 40k on the engine and 357k on the body with clutch, suspension parts etc replaced minus the alternator that I had to replace which was pre cheap. Best VW and car I've ever owned in general as they tend to last a very long time. Only issue I've come across is rusting due to age and ive heard the factory stock camshaft bearings tend to fail so its better to upgrade them with aftermarket ones.

We own 3 Mk5 Jetta's (all 2.5's with 5-speed manual) and have had them for over 8 years with mileage ranging from 140K to 314K. I find your "5 Problems" to be quite off. The most common issue (#1) is the Vacuum Brake Pump leaking oil all over the Starter and ruining the latter; the repair is to purchase the Brake Pump Delete Kit which ends the issue without any reduction in stopping power (easier on a manual than automatic but worth it).. Next (#2) is the Water Leaking Into the Front Floorboards issue: this is caused by the drainlines running down from the moonroof getting clogged and some fool engineer decided the overflow should dump into the car! Fix is to use an air-compressor to blow the lines free from the top. (#3) issue is the headliner and door panel glue failing. (#4) Drivers door wiring harness often fails from the wiring being pinched from the opening-and-closing of the door: the fix is a newly designed wiring harness (I've had to do all three of mine!) that has a swoop design to keep the wires in the harness from crimping. #5 are the door lock actuators: they just randomly fail making the doors unable to lock electronically. Basically, if you can get good at taking off door panels and skins, you'll be albe to make the last 2 repairs in about an hour on your own. Lastly, (#6) from talking with owners of automatic transmissions and seeing the number of them for sale with made transmissions, it seems the Automatic transmissions are prone to fail so your advice on fluid flushing is valuable advice.
Otherwise, these cars engines are pretty bullet-proof and reliable. Take care!

Water pump and ignition coil are the main problems for Audi and Volkswagen. My wife’s 2018 VW Tiguan got these two replaced under warranty only 40,000 miles on it. Best SUV to drive though.

I have a an 06 Volkswagen Jetta with the 2.5 litre inline 5 cylinder with the 5 speed manual. At 103k miles no mechanical faults to report. German cars are not for people who are lazy and change fluids and make repairs when they want. If you don't repair a German car when it's time to do something it will turn into a nightmare. If you are prepared to actually take care of it then you'll drive a German car with few issues. I certainly enjoy mine

i've just had to effectively scrap scrap my 57 plate jetta with just over 97k miles on the clock (part exchanged it for another car and got £295 for it) - as the gearbox was on it's way out...i had no idea of knowing how long it would have lasted for either...and there was only 2 gearboxes online, they were £500, the other side of the country and collection only, and they could have been broken too...
great shame as it was a fairly decent car, but I'd never buy another VW again...

i just bought a 2008 a few weeks ago. It just failed inspection for the headlights not being bright enough, and for the emergency break not working which I did not realize. The headlights wont be a huge issue but does anyone have any information to help me fix the emergency break? I am not sure what the issue it with it if its the cable is loose or the cable is gone, or what I will have to do or have to replace. other then that this car has 230,000 miles and runs absolutely beautifully and nothing else is wrong with it, no service lights or check engine lights on, nothing wrong with anything else, I'm so bummed that it didn't pass inspection.

What engine is this? It doesn't look like my 2.0T FSI model. Most of the issues I've had with my 2006 Jetta 2.0T have been electrical. The wiring harness in the drivers side door is notorious for having issues due to the pinch point when the door is closed. If you're have issues door locks and window controls on that side, this might be the problem. Also, headliners tend to have adhesive failure, make sure to ask if it's been replaced already if you're looking at purchasing a used one. It's an expensive fix or a huge pain in the ass to do yourself. Mechanically speaking though, I haven't had any major issues with my Jetta as a second owner for the past 7 years. It doesn't like extremely hot or cold temperatures, but it'll still start anyway. It'll just be angry and yell at you for it. No joke, the factory battery in mine lasted 11 years. My dad and I were stunned when we pulled it out after it finally died. Oh! And the engine air filter is in the dumbest possible place you could imagine, the engine cover, behind like 12 torx screws. Things like that make working on it kind of annoying.

The 2009 VW Jetta is one of the worst cars ever made, it has endless issues, it started with the body rusting like crazy at 45,000 miles, then the radiator failed and started leaking followed by the driver door lock, the headlights fuse, then the AC went bad, then the passenger side shock spring broke, then the transmission started acting up and miss-shifting and finally the driver side mirror fell off. all of that before it was even driven 75,000 miles. After all that we just traded it for a Corolla.

Seems like when VW’s run, they run very good. When they break, God help you.

I have not had the same success with my 2.0 turbo CC. I view the VW's as junk.
